RESUMEN

Meningiomas infrequently develop in children, and their clinical picture is somewhat different than in adults. We describe here a case of a meningioma in a 9-year-old girl unusual in two aspects. Firstly, it arose from the cavernous sinus what is exceptional in children. Secondly, despite the big tumor mass the child was almost asymptomatic. The only symptoms at presentation were a slight facial asymmetry and minimal laterodeviation of her mandible. Those symptoms had not been noticed by her parents and were detected during careful routine dental examination. The clinical course was quite aggressive and several neurosurgical interventions were necessary. This case underlines the importance of careful medical and dental examination during routine checkup consultations and undertaking necessary diagnostic procedures aimed at elucidating of all detected, even minimal abnormalities.

RESUMEN

Chemotherapy administered during childhood may induce dental abnormalities, such as acquired amelogenesis imperfecta, microdontia, hypodontia and altered root morphology. The magnitude of the defect varies according to the cytotoxic agents, the duration of their use and the stage of tooth development at the time of chemotherapy. Patients who received high-dose chemotherapy before the age of 5 are particularly concerned. The dental supervision of these children is based upon three orthopantomograms: the first one has to be performed before starting chemotherapy and will be used as a reference; the second is done soon after the drug therapy in order to evaluate the first consequences; the third is performed after the eruption of all permanent teeth (age 12-13 in average) in order to determine the dental abnormalities. In case of hypodontia, orthodontic treatment must be considered, but it is necessary to take into account the fact that it may increase the risk of root resorption. Preventive dental care is important for these children. It involves meticulous oral hygiene and frequent dental visits to assess and maintain dental health.

RESUMEN

A prospective study about the development of the mandibular second right molar, has been performed with 17 chemotherapy treated children in the Paediatric Oncology department of the Centre Oscar-Lambret (Lille). Our method is based upon the measure of the crown or root length for different periods: periods with or without chemotherapy. These measurements have been performed every 6 months for 18 months with orthopantomograms. We notice for both the crown and the root: a significant difference in growing speed between periods with an without chemotherapy; a speeding up of the mineralization at the end of the treatment rejoining the average figures of a healthy test population.

RESUMEN

Photoreceptors of adult and larval zebrafish were assayed by microspectrophotometry to characterize their visual pigments, and to determine when the visual pigments first appear during development. Short single cone outer segments contained a pigment with a lambdamax near 417 nm. Long single cones and long members of double cone outer segments contained a pigment with a lambdamax near 480 nm. Short members of double cone outer segments contained a pigment with a lambdamax near 556 nm. Rod outer segments contained a rhodopsin with a lambdamax near 501 nm. All four visual pigment types found in adult photoreceptors were present in the earliest measurable larval photoreceptors.

RESUMEN

A significant positive association between antigens HLA Aw19 and/or HLA B5 and a disease-free survival time of one year for patients with lung cancer has been reported but not confirmed. We have HLA-typed 20 white patients with non-oat-cell bronchogenic carcinoma who have survived at least a year from the time of diagnosis. Half these patients possessed these antigens (P less than 0.08). This highly suggests that the presence of these antigens is associated with prolonged survival time. Now may be the time for performing large scale clinical trails using these antigens as stratification factors.
