RESUMEN

This paper describes in detail the implementation of Geant4 Livermore electromagnetic physics models based on the EPICS2017 database for the low energy transport of photons. These models describe four photon processes: gamma conversion, Compton scattering, photoelectric effect and Rayleigh scattering. New parameterizations based on EPICS2017 were performed for scattering functions of Compton effect, subshell cross-sections of the photoelectric effect and form factors of Rayleigh scattering, in order to improve the precision of fitted values compared to tabulated values. Comparisons between new and old parameterizations were also carried out to evaluate the precision of the new parameterizations. The models were tested through a comparative study, in which the mass attenuation coefficient was calculated for both total photon interaction and each process using Geant4 simulations based on EPICS2017 and EPDL97 respectively. The results obtained from the simulations were found in good agreement with the XCOM reference data.

RESUMEN

Supersurface electron scattering, i.e., electron energy losses and associated deflections in vacuum above the surface of a medium, is shown to contribute significantly to electron spectra. We have obtained experimental verification (in absolute units) of theoretical predictions that the angular distribution of the supersurface backscattering probability exhibits strong oscillations which are anticorrelated with the generalized Ramsauer-Townsend minima in the backscattering probability. We have investigated 500-eV electron backscattering from an Au surface for an incidence angle of 70° and scattering angles between 37° and 165°. After removing the contribution of supersurface scattering from the experimental data, the resulting angular and energy distribution agrees with the Landau-Goudsmit-Saunderson (LGS) theory, which was proposed about 60 years ago, while the raw data are anticorrelated with LGS theory. This result implies that supersurface scattering is an essential phenomenon for quantitative understanding of electron spectra.

BACKGROUND: The overwhelming majority of animal species exhibit bilateral symmetry. However, the precise evolutionary importance of bilateral symmetry is unknown, although elements of the understanding of the phenomenon have been present within the scientific community for decades. PRESENTATION OF THE HYPOTHESIS: Here we show, with very simple physical laws, that locomotion in three-dimensional macro-world space is itself sufficient to explain the maintenance of bilateral symmetry in animal evolution. The ability to change direction, a key element of locomotion, requires the generation of instantaneous "pushing" surfaces, from which the animal can obtain the necessary force to depart in the new direction. We show that bilateral is the only type of symmetry that can maximize this force; thus, an actively locomoting bilateral body can have the maximal manoeuvrability as compared to other symmetry types. This confers an obvious selective advantage on the bilateral animal. IMPLICATIONS OF THE HYPOTHESIS: These considerations imply the view that animal evolution is a highly channelled process, in which bilateral and radial body symmetries seem to be inevitable.
