RESUMEN

The integrated biochemical condition (IBC) of gonads is closely related to the reproductive success of highly migratory marine species. The IBC of gonads can be influenced not only by size and/or age, but also by environmental conditions. Here, female swordfish, Xiphias gladius, that migrate to temperate regions with a marked seasonality (e.g., the Southeastern Pacific Ocean, SEPO) were compared in relation to the IBCs (lipids, proteins, glucose and, fatty acid profiles) of their gonads; individuals with two body size ranges and distinct degrees of sexual maturity were evaluated, and considered as: small and/or virginal (SV: <170 cm lower jaw fork-length (LJFL), oocyte size (OS) <0.08 mm) vs large and/or maturing females (LM: >190 cm LJFL, OS >0.133 mm). This comparison was conducted in two environmentally contrasting seasons (winter vs spring). Our results showed that the gonadosomatic index (GSI) was significantly higher in LM than SV. Lipid contents varied significantly between seasons and body sizes. The highest lipid concentrations were recorded in the spring in large females. No significant differences were found when comparing the protein and glucose contents of the two evaluated seasons or body size ranges of the studied females. In turn, the fatty acid (FA) profiles of female gonads significantly varied for both seasons and body size ranges. A high content of saturated fatty acids (SFAs), monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) and poly-unsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) were recorded in female gonads in the spring. The SFAs C16:0 and C18:0, the MUFA C18:1n9, and the essential PUFA C22:6n3 were the main contributors to the observed differences between spring and winter. These results could be used as indicators of the nutritional condition and health status of swordfish individuals. Hence, the IBC of female swordfish gonads have great potential to aid in estimating survival rates and stock abundances of this species. The integration of this information constitutes an asset in fishery management models with an ecosystem approach.

RESUMEN

RESUMEN: Introducción: El Stent-Save a Life!

ABSTRACT: Background: The Stent-Save a Life! (SSL) LATAM working group designed a survey to demonstrate the reduction in the activity of cardiac catheterization laboratories in Latin America during the COVID-19 pandemic. Considering the risk of a new confinement in Chile, we decided to assess the impact of the first wave of contagions on our activity. Aims: To discuss the repercussion of the COVID-19 pandemic on the activity of interventional cardiology in Chile. Methods: The SSL group conducted a telematic survey in all Latin American countries. Coronary angiography, coronary interventions (PCI) and structural interventions were registered, comparing two periods of two weeks duration each: before and during COVID-19 confinement. Results obtained in Chile are analyzed. Results: Thirteen centers in Chile answered the survey. There was an overall decrease of 65.1% in the number of procedures between the pre and the post COVID-19 periods. Coronary angiographies decreased 67%, PCI 59.4% and therapeutical structural procedures 92%. The reduction in acute coronary syndrome with ST segment elevation (STEMI) was 40,8% between periods. Conclusions: In Chile, a significant reduction in healthcare activity related to interventional cardiology and a significant decrease in the number of patients treated with STEMI was observed during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results are similar to those reported by Latin American, European and North American countries.

RESUMEN

In the Southeast Pacific Ocean, Xiphias gladius migrates through the Chilean coastal zone for feeding. Here, it forages for different prey items from autumn to spring, acquiring a great variety of energy and nutritional reserves. We evaluated seasonal variations in the biochemical reserves (i.e., contents of lipids, proteins, and glucose), total energy content and fatty acid profile of specimens captured during the austral autumn, winter, and spring. Our results show that higher amounts of lipids were found in the winter and spring, while protein and glucose were higher in the autumn. Thus, the energy content showed significant differences, with higher levels in winter and spring. Furthermore, the fatty acid profile was more diverse in the spring than the autumn and winter and was characterized by higher amounts of polyunsaturated fatty acids. These findings suggest that temporal changes in the biochemical reserves, total energy content and fatty acid profile support the idea of a "trophic migration" (i.e., the feeding period) established by the dynamics of fishery fleets. The high amounts of lipids and diverse fatty acid profile found in the spring could indicate the end of the trophic migration during this season. Thus, X. gladius may reach an optimum nutritional condition in the spring and make energetic adjustments to carry out its reproductive migration during the austral summer. Therefore, this species seems to meet the high energy demands of the reproductive season by foraging for a wide range of prey items from autumn to spring and storing an increased amount of lipids at the end of the feeding period. Overall, our data provides crucial baseline knowledge for future research on the ecophysiology of X. gladius, as well as for the management and conservation of this fishery resource under an ecosystem approach.

This research aimed to find out the frequency and ways of using medicinal plants by pregnant women treated at the Centro de Salud Viña Alta, located in La Molina district. Twenty-one (21) pregnant women voluntarily participated in the study, where they were administered an expert-validated survey regarding the use of medicinal plants. The results showed that 86 % of the pregnant women used medicinal plants and 67 % did not ask their doctor before using them. The most frequent way of using the medicinal plants was by oral intake as herbal teas. The most widely used medicinal plants were chamomile, parsley, eucalyptus, boldo, aloe, mint and rue, some of which produced a teratogenic effect, uterine stimulant action, abortifacient effect, among others. It is necessary to know the actual quantity and most frequent way of using medicinal plants by pregnant women to classify these products as for its safety level and promote the rational use of traditional medicine to contribute to public health.

RESUMEN

ABSTRACT: Intensification of drought in Mediterraneantype climates has limited seedling establishment. The knowledge of the ecology of selected species and its intraspecific variation to water stress at the seedling stage should be considered in order to overcome limitations. We investigated variations in growth, survival, and leaflevel physiology in four provenances of the endemic Cryptocarya alba (Mol.) during water stress and after rewatering. Seedlings were cultured in the nursery during 23 months and then subjected to two watering treatments based on soil water content (wellwatered and water restriction, 0.38 and 0.17 cm3 cm3, respectively) for 45 days. At the end of the watering treatments, seedling growth, above and belowground biomass, survival, and leaf gas exchange were measured. Right after the watering treatments, the surviving seedlings were submitted to a recovery period of 21 days, in which all seedlings were rewatered at 0.38 cm3 cm3 of soil water content and measured for leaf gas exchange. Provenances differed in growth and biomass allocation. Unlike growth and biomass, interaction between provenance and watering treatments was found for photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, transpiration, and water use efficiency of northern provenances, exhibiting the highest performance under water restriction. However, most variations observed occurred before the rewatering period and only a few occurred after this period. The four provenances under study exhibited similar photosynthesis and stomatal conductance after rewatering. Our study demonstrated phenotypic variation of C. alba and the capability of the species to withstand and recover from water stress.

Abstract Introduction: Atrial fibrillation is the most common arrhythmia in the world, and has significant clinical consequences. However, there are few data on the prevalence or incidence in Latin America, particularly in Colombia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed, in which a review was made of the computerised clinical records of patients admitted by Internal Medicine into three University Hospitals in Colombia. Patients admitted to Intensive Care or had vasoactive/ inotropic support were excluded. The overall prevalence was calculated, as well as by age group. The difference in prevalence between age groups was also calculated using the prevalence rates. Results: A total of 6,882 clinical records were reviewed, finding an overall prevalence of atrial fibrillation of 4.8% (331 patients), and was higher in women (2.64%). The overall median age was 65 years with an interquartile range (IQR) between 49 and 78 years. This increased to 79 years (IQR 71-86) for patients with atrial fibrillation. One or more associated comorbidities were found in 93.96% of cases, and of these the most common was chronic arterial hypertension in 74.32%. At greater than 70 years, atrial fibrillation increased 3.3 times more compared to those below this age range (prevalence ratio, 3.3). Conclusions: Atrial fibrillation in the three sites studied had an overall prevalence of 4.8%. This increased by 3.3 times in those patients over 70 years-old. This fact shows that the disease increases with increased age, making this useful data to maintain a screening policy that could improve health quality and coverage in Colombia.

Microscopic Polyangiitis is defined as an autoimmune, multisystemic, low prevalence disease, associated to antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody. Characterized by necrotizing vasculitis of small vessels, with no granulomatous inflammation and absence of immune complex deposits, predominantly affecting renal, pulmonary and cutaneous tissue. 49-year old male patient with no past medical history. Refers symptomatology that started thirty days ago, characterized by dry cough, that evolves to productive cough, hemoptysis, exertional dyspnea, asthenia and pitting edema. Laboratory tests show severe anemia, glomerular filtration rate of 6.9 ml/min/1.73m2, hematuria, proteinuria, positive presence of antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies and anti-myeloperoxidase antibodies, additional thoracic imaging shows ground glass opacities consolidations. Immunosuppressive therapy is started with Methylprednisolone and Cyclophosphamide along with antibiotic prophylaxis, resulting in a decrease in the vasculitis activity score with subsequent remission; however due to renal tissue damage, there is no improvement in the glomerular filtration rate and the patient continues receiving renal replacement therapy. Due to its striking morbidity and mortality, we consider of great importance the knowledge of its clinical presentation, diagnostic procedures and treatment, in order to obtain a positive impact on the patient's quality of life and survival rate(AU)

RESUMEN

The purpose of this research was to investigate differences in diet composition between Achirus mazatlanus and Syacium ovale, two flatfishes inhabiting in a tropical coastal lagoon and to investigate the relationship of their feeding habits to size, body morphometry and mouths characteristics. Fish were collected during sampling trips conducted regularly from 2011 to 2016 using several types of fishing gear. Total number of analyzed stomachs with some food content was 328 for Achirus mazatlanus from 1.4 to 21.3 cm total length (TL) and 203 for Syacium ovale with 1.3 to 24.0 cm TL. Results indicate that both species share a general diet based on benthic invertebrates and fishes but S. ovale has a more piscivorous habit, which can be explained by a more slender body shape and larger teeth, characteristics which increase prey fish catching performance. Important changes in composition of food categories related to size were not found for any species, but larger fish of both species eat larger ranges of prey sizes, and this ontogenetic change is consistent with recent developments on optimal foraging theory.(AU)

BACKGROUND: Balloon pulmonary angioplasty (BPA) is a therapeutic alternative for patients with inoperable chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH). AIM: To report the initial experience with the "refined BPA technique" with the use of intravascular images. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between June 2015 and June 2016 we selected fourteen patients with CTEPH who were considered candidates for BPA. Lesions targeted for treatment were further analyzed using intravascular imaging with optical frequency domain imaging (OFDI). We report the immediate hemodynamic results and four weeks of follow-up of the first eight patients of this series. RESULTS: We performed 16 BPA in eight patients aged 61 ± 14 years (88% women). Mean pulmonary artery pressure (PAPm) was 48.6 ± 5.8 mmHg. Success was achieved in seven patients (88%). A mean of 2.3 segments per patient were intervened in 11 sessions (1.6 sessions/ patient). Only one patient developed lung reperfusion injury. No mortality was associated with the procedure. After the last BPA session, PAPm decreased to 37.4 ± 8.6 mmHg (p=0.02). Pulmonary vascular resistance (RVP) decreased from 858,6 ± 377,0 at baseline to 516,6 ± 323,3 Dynes/sec/cm-5 (p<0.01) and the cardiac index increased from 2.4±0.6 at baseline to 2.8±0.3 L/min/m2 (p=0.01). At 4 weeks after the last BPA, WHO functional class improved from 3.3±0.5 to 2.5±0.5 (p<0,01) and six minutes walking distance from 331±92 to 451±149 m (p=0.01). CONCLUSIONS: BPA guided by OFDI for the treatment of inoperable CTEPH patients is a safe alternative with excellent immediate hemodynamic and clinical results.

RESUMEN

Knowledge of the genetic units of species is fundamental to the conservation of biodiversity. This is true for all regions, including the Neotropics where the Earth has its greatest diversity, including roughly 34% of primate species, a group that has almost 60% of its taxa threatened with extinction. The untufted (gracile) capuchins are medium-sized Neotropical primates, traditionally classified in four species: Cebus albifrons, C. capucinus, C. olivaceus, and C. kaapori. They have a very confusing intra-specific systematics with a large number of fragmented and isolated populations throughout their geographical distributions. We sequenced a large sample of gracile capuchins, including all of the recognized species, to offset the paucity of phylogenic and phylogeographic data regarding this group and to try to understand their phylogeny and evolution. A set of 189 gracile and robust capuchins were sequenced for their mitogenomes whereas another set of 394 gracile and robust capuchins were sequenced at two individual mitochondrial genes (mtCOI-COII). Additionally, 41 Colombian gracile capuchins were geno typified at eight nuclear DNA microsatellites. Our main findings are as follows: (1) Nineteen different groups of gracile capuchin were detected with the mitogenomics data set and more than twenty significant groups and sub-groups were identified with the mtCOI-COII genes; (2) The temporal splits of the older gracile capuchin haplogroups expanded between 2 and 4 million years ago (MYA), during the Pliocene; (3) The two most northern taxa of Colombian C. albifrons (malitiosus and hypoleucus) are the same taxon (C. a. hypoleucus) as was claimed by Cabrera. This taxon represents an old colonization event from the Amazon to current northern Colombia. It is intensely hybridized (evidence from both mitochondrial and nuclear genes) with a haplogroup of C. capucinus (H3) and also has an influx of robust capuchins; (4) Three different and independent migrations of C. albifrons from the Amazon arrived to northern Colombia giving rise to C. a. hypoleucus (including malitiosus), C. a versicolor (including leucocephalus, cesarae, and pleei), and C. a. adustus; (5) On the Caribbean island of Trinidad, two different gracile capuchin taxa exist, one autochthonous, which could correspond to a fourth migration into northwestern South America (C. a. trinitatis) and probably another one, introduced more recently (C. olivaceus brunneus); (6) The values of the genetic distance analyses, the inexistence of reciprocal mitochondrial monophylia for many clades of gracile capuchins and the strong hybridization detected with nuclear microsatellites, especially among hypoleucus (malitiosus), C. capucinus-H3, versicolor, and cesarae, support that all the gracile capuchins belong to one unique superspecies: C. capucinus (senior name for all the gracile capuchins).

ABSTRACT One of the major controversies within the comprehensive medical management of hepatocellular carcinoma is the accurate estimation of the effectiveness of transarterial chemoembolization therapy. Evidence shows that it is part of the treatment nucleus for patients with unresectable tumors and, compared to hepatic resection and radiofrequency ablation, offers long-term survival if the characteristics of nodules up to 3 cm or less without vascular invasion are met. We present a clinical case of atypical hepatocellular carcinoma with integral medical management, through transarterial chemoembolization, evidencing its effectiveness by images and macroscopically until the orthotopic liver transplantation.

Introduction: Chronic diaphragmatic hernias and eventrations are two conditions sometimes mistaken for each other. They have a relatively low frequency and their surgical strategy varies. Objective: To show the experience at Comandante Manuel Fajardo Clinical Surgical University Hospital in the caring for patients with diaphragmatic eventrations and hernias. Methods: 11 patients attended from 1998 to 2015 were presented for diaphragmatic conditions, such as hernias and chronic diaphragmatic eventrations. Of the total, 7 were operated with rings of up to 10 cm. Two were operated for rings of more than 10 cm. Results: 9 patients with diaphragmatic hernias and 2 with incisional hernias were operated. Eight hernias were on the left side. One hernia was on the right side. In 8 of the hernias, the content was multivisceral. The right hernia had a ring of more than 10 cm, and had the liver in its content. Five hernias were repaired by flaps. Four hernias required a prosthetic mesh. The eventrations were presented in two women, both partial: one was on the right and the other was on the left, and both were treated with plication of the hemidiaphragm in two planes. Conclusions: Diaphragmatic hernias and eventrations are similar entities with different characteristics and therapeutics. In eventrations, the plication of the diaphragm is the technique of choice, either openly or preferably by thoracoscopy. In diaphragmatic hernias, repair depends on the size of the ring, up to 10 cm, flap repair is preferred, and in larger defects, it is the use of prosthetic meshes, preferably by thoracotomy(AU)
