PURPOSE: We aimed to investigate early effects of exogenously administered adropin (AD) on neurological function, endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) expression, nitrite/nitrate levels, oxidative stress, and apoptosis in subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). METHODS: Following intracerebroventricular AD administration (10 µg/5 µl at a rate of 1 µl/min) SAH model was carried out in Sprague-Dawley rats by injection of autologous blood into the prechiasmatic cistern. The effects of AD were assessed 24 h following SAH. The modified Garcia score was employed to evaluate functional insufficiencies. Adropin and caspase-3 proteins were measured by ELISA, while nitrite/nitrate levels, total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and reactive oxygen/nitrogen species (ROS/RNS) were assayed by standard kits. eNOS expression and apoptotic neurons were detected by immunohistochemical analysis. RESULTS: The SAH group performed notably lower on the modified Garcia score compared to sham and SAH + AD groups. Adropin administration increased brain eNOS expression, nitrite/nitrate and AD levels compared to SHAM and SAH groups. SAH produced enhanced ROS/RNS generation and reduced antioxidant capacity in the brain. Adropin boosted brain TAC and diminished ROS/RNS production in SAH rats and no considerable change amongst SHAM and SAH + AD groups were detected. Apoptotic cells were notably increased in intensity and number after SAH and were reduced by AD administration. CONCLUSIONS: Adropin increases eNOS expression and reduces neurobehavioral deficits, oxidative stress, and apoptotic cell death in SAH model. Presented results indicate that AD provides protection in early brain injury associated with SAH.

AIM: To demonstrate the changes in Grade II and III glial tumors after WHO 2016 Brain Tumors Classification. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The previous diagnoses and postoperative treatment of the 83 patients were recorded. We used real-time PCR (mutation assay) for the analysis of IDH1 and IDH2, while we used FISH test to determine 1p/19q codeletion. The integrated diagnosis was compared with classical histopathological diagnoses. RESULTS: We studied 13 oligodendendrogliomas, 41 astrocytomas and 29 oligoastrocytomas patients with classical histopathological diagnosis group. IDH mutation was detected in 51 of the patients after genetic analysis, whereas 1p/19q codeletion was detected in 20 patients. We found that grade II IDH-mut astrocytoma patients had significantly better survival outcomes compared to grade III IDH-mut astrocytoma patients. CONCLUSION: Grade II and III gliomas are separated into more homogeneous diagnostic groups for survival after molecular marker analyses. Compared to histopathological diagnosis, the WHO 2016 glioma classification with molecular markers provides new perspectives in patient prognosis and treatment. However, due to the costs of using molecular markers, the extent to which it can be used remains questionable.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the results of bilateral endoscopic optic nerve decompression (EOND) with the opening nerve sheath (ONS) technique in patients with idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH). METHODS: Between the years of 2017 and 2019, we retrospectively evaluated nine IIH patients with progressive visual impairment despite medical treatment and who were treated with the EOND and ONS techniques. We also demonstrated our surgical technique recipe on postmortem human heads in a stepwise manner. RESULTS: There were 9 patients (7 females and 2 males) between the ages of 21 and 72 included in this study, and the mean age was 40.8. All patients had an impairment in visual acuity and/or their visual field, with signs of papilledema and/or optic atrophy. The patients were followed up with for 9-48 months. Improvements in visual acuity were observed in 7 out of 9 patients (78%). Visual field defects improved in 5 out of 8 patients (62.5%). Papilledema was resolved in all patients (100%). Headaches improved in all symptomatic patients (100%). No intraoperative or postoperative complications were observed. CONCLUSIONS: EOND is a safe and effective surgical procedure in selected patients with IIH. Bilateral wide bony decompression and nerve fenestration can also be an additional benefit for headache relief. Further clinical series and long-term follow-up are needed for more precise results.

In the present case study, we present a female adolescent patient harboring a rare clinical presentation of spinal intradural extramedullary epidermoid cyst concomitant with congenital scoliosis. A 17-year-old female patient was admitted to the clinic with long-lasting neck pain. She was neurologically intact yet had cervicothoracic scoliosis. Cervical MRI and CT depicted a right C6 hemivertebra, fused to the lower endplate of the C5 vertebra. At the same vertebra level, she had an intradural extramedullary mass lesion anterior to the spinal cord. We planned to excise the mass lesion first. We used neuromonitoring during the surgery and made the surgery via posterior approach. We observed a pearl-like mass lesion anterolateral to the spinal cord. We excised the mass lesion with its capsule microsurgically via peace-meal route. She was neurologically stable following the surgery. Histopathological diagnosis was epidermoid cyst. Most of spinal inclusion cysts occur secondary to spinal dysraphism or iatrogenic inoculation. Isolated spinal inclusion cyst located anterior to the spinal cord concomitant with vertebral anomalies should be kept in mind before making proper surgical planning. Surgery is the modality of choice for spinal inclusion cyst and should be performed under the guidance of neuromonitoring, especially in cases with lesions located at higher spinal levels.

OBJECTIVE: This article presents a novel surgical technique in the management of open complete talocrural luxations and evaluates the results, and clinical benefits with its routine clinical utilization. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. ANIMALS: Seventeen medium- or large-breed client-owned dogs of different breed, age and sex with complete talocrural luxations and radiographic follow-up of at least 24 weeks duration. METHOD: Selective talocrural arthrodesis was performed by using a hybrid transarticular external skeletal fixator frame. Clinical and radiographical evaluation was performed regarding the lesion, concomitant injury, duration of the surgery, time to first use of the limb, fixator removal time, complications and clinical outcomes. RESULTS: Dogs started to use the injured limb between postoperative days 1 to 11. Pin or wire tract related complications were observed in all dogs. Time to fixator removal ranged from 57 to 90 days with a median of 73 days. All of the operated joints with an exception of one dog resulted in talocrural fusion. Mid-term clinical outcomes score was regarded as excellent in 13/17 dogs, good in 3/17 dogs and poor in 1/17 dogs subject to authors' evaluation. CONCLUSION: A transarticular hybrid external fixator may allow early use of postoperative limb with an excellent patient compliance and is well tolerated as well. The technique showed a promising opportunity of providing favourable limb use.

OBJECTIVE: To report our experience with the use of contoured mini circular transarticular external skeletal fixators for the management of traumatic tarsal luxations in 15 cats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifteen cats with traumatic tarsal joint luxation treated by using mini circular transarticular external fixators with available clinical records and complete clinical and radiographic follow-up of at least 30 weeks duration were included in the study. Data collected were the signalment, history, type of injury, concomitant injury, frame configuration, stabilization technique, duration of the surgery, time to first use of the operated limb, fixator removal time, complications, final outcome and follow-up. RESULTS: The surgical procedure chosen was based on the type of luxation; partial tarsal arthrodesis was performed in 10 cases, tarso-crural stabilization in four cases, and pantarsal arthrodesis in three cases. Five cats started to use the operated limb immediately after recovering from anaesthesia. In the other 10 cats, time to first use ranged from one to four days (mean 2 days). In one case, early pin loosening due to half pin fixation bolt failure was observed as a postoperative complication. Fixator removal time ranged from 24 to 60 days (mean 45 days). Functional outcome was excellent in 15 cats and good in two. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This is a preliminary report about the treatment of tarsal luxations with a mini circular transarticular external fixation system in which early postoperative and long-term results seem to be favourable.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of whole-body electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure on growth plates in growing male rats. Two groups of rats were exposed to either 900 MHz EMF or 1800 MHz EMF 2 h/day for 90 days. Sham control rats were kept under similar conditions without exposure to the EMF. The rats in the EMF group experienced a more rapid weight gain and increase in length (p < 0.05). Calcium, growth hormone, estradiol and testosterone levels in the EMF groups were higher (p < 0.05). The Safranin O staining density of femoral growth plate was lowest in the reserve zone of rats exposed to 1800 MHz and was increased in the proliferative zone of the control group (p < 0.05). The trabecular zone was thinnest among all zones and the reserve and proliferative zones were thicker (p < 0.05) than other zones in 1800 MHz group.In conclusion, 1800 MHz and 900 MHz EMF may cause prolong the growth phase in growing rats.

The aim of this study was to investigate bee venom and hyaluronic acid in the intra-articular treatment of osteoarthritis in an experimental rabbit model. Forty-five rabbits were used and they were randomly divided into three groups (BVI, BVII, and HA) and each group was divided to two subgroups to evaluate the radiologic, magnetic resonance imaging, histopathologic, and biochemical evaluation in post treatment second week (a) and twelfth week (b). Radiologically, a significant difference was observed in the HA group (P<0.05). The MRI evaluation of at any time in group BVI(b) was found to be different. No significant differences were seen between the groups, biochemically. Histopathologically, cellularity, and orthochromasia was evident with Safranin-O in the BVI(b) and BVII(a); adhesions were seen in the BVII(a) group and clustering of chondrocyte in the HA(b) group were found to be different. Consequently, intra-articular application of HA and BV for experimental model of osteoarthritis has no significant influence upon recovery after therapy.

PURPOSE: In this study, the effects of Curacel TM oxidized regenerated cellulose and bone wax on the healing bone were compared to each other by means of CT based bone density measurement and histopathological evaluation. METHODS: The bone density measurements of the control group were significantly higher than those of both Curacel and bone wax groups. RESULTS: There was no significant difference between Curacel and bone wax. Histopathologically, the bone wax group showed more osteoblastic activation than Curacel group. For all measurement parameters (osteoblastic activation, osteoclastic activation, fibrous connective tissue, osseous trabeculae), Curacel and bone wax groups had worse results than control group. It is concluded that Curacel has no superiority over bone wax in terms of osseous healing in the oroantral region. There is no need to use oxidized regenerated cellulose or bone wax for small oroantral openings since the healing is better without any intervention. In addition, bone density measurement and histopathological evaluation were consistent in terms of osseous healing of the oroantral opening.

OBJECTIVE: To report use of semicircular external skeletal fixators (ESF) for management of femoral fractures in dogs. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective clinical study. ANIMALS: Dogs (n=16) with femoral fractures (n=18). METHODS: A semicircular ESF system composed of 6-hole 45° or 5-hole 40° carbon-fiber arches, 6 mm threaded rods, half pin fixation bolts, 6 mm nuts, and negative profile end-threaded half pins were used for open repair of femoral fractures. ESF configuration, complications, limb use, fixator removal time, and functional outcomes were evaluated. Outcome was graded as excellent, good, fair, or poor. RESULTS: Seventeen fractures with sufficient follow-up healed. Eight dogs started using the limb immediately after waking up from anesthesia whereas initial limb use was 1-4 days after repair in the other dogs. Time to fixator removal ranged from 28 to 63 days (mean, 38 days). Functional outcome was excellent in 13 cases, good in 4, and poor in 1 nonunion. CONCLUSION: Semicircular ESF combined with open surgical reduction can be used to successfully repair metaphyseal and diaphyseal femoral fractures in young growing dogs.

UNLABELLED:  Aim. To evaluate the effects of three types of honey (chestnut, blossom, and rhododendron) on the healing of full-thickness wounds. METHODS: Twenty-four (24) New Zealand White female rabbits were used. Four 1.5 cm x 1.5 cm full-thickness skin wounds were created on the back of each animal and treated with pure honey or sterile saline, respectively. Wounds were assessed by wound measurements and collection of samples at 7, 14, and 21 days post wounding to evaluate the healing process. Variables of interest were hydroxyproline concentration and gross and microscopic morphological characteristics reflective of wound healing. Wounds of the honey-treated groups healed much faster than the control group. RESULTS: On day 7, the formation of granulation tissue, epithelization, angiogenesis, and fibroplasia levels increased in the honey-treated groups (P <0.05). A statistical difference between the honeys was not detected. CONCLUSION: The present results suggest that honey accelerates the inflammatory reaction and initiates healing early on in the treatment process. .

The objective of the study was to determine the effect of the dispersed or nondispersed form of the extruded disk material (EDM) on the neurological status and surgical outcomes in Hansen thoracolumbar intervertebral disk disease Type I (IVDD-I). Medical records of 40 dogs with IVDD-I were reviewed, including neurologic status on admission, findings on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), intraoperative findings, and surgical outcomes. In MRI evaluations, EDM was on the right in 16, on the left in 18, and centrally in 6 cases; in all cases, findings were confirmed by surgery. Extruded disk material was localized and classified as dispersed disk (DD) or nondispersed disk (NDD) according to its dispersion in the epidural space on MRI. Twenty-five dogs had DD and 15 had NDD on both MRI and surgery. There was no significant difference between DD and NDD in preoperative neurological status and surgical outcomes (P > 0.05).

RESUMEN

: Five dogs, four small mixed breed and a Doberman Pinscher, presented in our clinic with hemivertebra. Complete physical, radiological and neurological examinations were done and the spinal deformities were characterized in accord with the Nasca classification used in human medicine. Two dogs had multiple hemivertebrae (round, oval or wedge-shaped: Type 3) in the thoracic region; one dog had an individual surplus half vertebral body (Type 1) plus a wedge-shaped hemivertebra (Type 2b) in the lumbar region; one dog had multiple hemivertebrae which were fused on one side (Type 4a) in the thoracic region; and one dog had a wedge-shaped hemivertebra (Type 2a) in the cervical region.
