PURPOSE: The exact molecular and cellular processes that cause benign urological diseases in the stromal and epithelial components of the urinary tract are yet unknown. Reviewing and analyzing the data linking microRNAs (miRNAs) expression in the pathophysiology of benign urological conditions, including overactive bladder (OAB), bladder outlet obstruction (BOO), bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis (BPS/IC), and Lower urinary tract dysfunction (LUTD) is the objective of the current systematic review. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Evidence including all case-control, cohort, and cross-sectional studies that measure participants' MicroRNA as a biomarker for benign urological diseases has been gathered On January 2024, through searching MEDLINE via PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, and ProQuest databases. Studies considered eligible that present information on the reference Gene, profile type, and serum levels of microRNA from patients diagnosed with benign urological disease including benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) or benign prostate enlargement (BPE), overactive bladder (OAB), and bladder outlet obstruction (BOO). These studies appraised by the quality assessment checklist of Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI). RESULTS: A total of 4,587 records related to miRNAs in urological diseases were retrieved. Of these, we identified 28 records for our systematic study. The most frequently associated miRNA was 92a-3p identified which was found upregulated in OAB diagnosis. In BOO, miR-146a-5p was identified to be upregulated. miR-146a-5p was upregulated in BO, and for other benign conditions, different miRNAs were reported. 491-5p miRNAs were found deregulated in OAB-related studies. We expected other miRNAs to have the same trend in the OAB studies. InSUI miR-93 was the most frequent downregulated miRNA. The other reported miRNAs had similar frequencies. CONCLUSION: When it comes to the early detection and treatment of benign urological conditions, 92a-3p, miR-21, miR-199a-5p, and miR-146a-5p, and 491-5p have the potential to be employed as both a biomarker and a therapeutic target. The creation of pre-RNA or anti-RNA molecules within carrier vehicles that may be safely administered to patients should be made possible by technological advancements.

Introduction: During the unprecedented COVID-19 lockdowns, road traffic was limited, and a change in the traumatic emergency admission pattern was anticipated. We conducted the current systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on hospital admissions due to road traffic crashes. Methods: This systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted based on the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) instructions. The following databases were searched: PubMed, ISI Web of Knowledge, Scopus, ProQuest, and the Cochrane Library. Two independent reviewers screened articles based on the inclusion criteria for the review and assessed the methodological quality of the included studies using an appropriate appraisal checklist, introduced by the JBI, based on the study type. The meta-analysis was performed using Comprehensive meta-analysis (CMA) software. Considering the heterogeneity among studies, a random effect model was adopted to estimate the pooled effect with 95% confidence interval (CI) for binary outcomes. Results: A total of 13 studies were included in this systematic review, and all of them were considered for meta-analysis. According to the meta-analysis, differences in hospital admission rates during the COVID-19 pandemic and one year before this pandemic were statistically significant [RR: 0.685 CI 95% (0.578 -0.813) p<0.00001]. The heterogeneity assessment of the included studies in the meta-analysis showed high heterogeneity (I2=78%, p<0.00001). Conclusion: The results of this systematic review showed that the COVID-19 pandemic dramatically reduced the number of hospital admissions related to road traffic crashes because of both quarantines and lifestyle changes. Health policymakers and top health managers might use the results of this systematic review in similar contexts in the future.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to assess the quality and diagnostic accuracy of MRI-based radiomics for predicting Ki-67 expression in breast cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic literature search was performed to find relevant studies published in different databases, including PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase up until March 10, 2023. All papers were independently evaluated for eligibility by two reviewers. Studies that matched research questions and provided sufficient data for quantitative synthesis were included in the systematic review and meta-analysis, respectively. The quality of the articles was assessed using Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies 2 (QUADAS-2) and Radiomics Quality Score (RQS) tools. The predictive value of MRI-based radiomics for Ki-67 antigen in patients with breast cancer was assessed using pooled sensitivity (SEN), specificity, and area under the curve (AUC). Meta-regression was performed to explore the cause of heterogeneity. Different covariates were used for subgroup analysis. RESULTS: 31 studies were included in the systematic review; among them, 21 reported sufficient data for meta-analysis. 20 training cohorts and five validation cohorts were pooled separately. The pooled sensitivity, specificity, and AUC of MRI-based radiomics for predicting Ki-67 expression in training cohorts were 0.80 [95% CI, 0.73-0.86], 0.82 [95% CI, 0.78-0.86], and 0.88 [95%CI, 0.85-0.91], respectively. The corresponding values for validation cohorts were 0.81 [95% CI, 0.72-0.87], 0.73 [95% CI, 0.62-0.82], and 0.84 [95%CI, 0.80-0.87], respectively. Based on QUADAS-2, some risks of bias were detected for reference standard and flow and timing domains. However, the quality of the included article was acceptable. The mean RQS score of the included articles was close to 6, corresponding to 16.6% of the maximum possible score. Significant heterogeneity was observed in pooled sensitivity and specificity of training cohorts (I2 > 75%). We found that using deep learning radiomic methods, magnetic field strength (3 T vs. 1.5 T), scanner manufacturer, region of interest structure (2D vs. 3D), route of tissue sampling, Ki-67 cut-off, logistic regression for model construction, and LASSO for feature reduction as well as PyRadiomics software for feature extraction had a great impact on heterogeneity according to our joint model analysis. Diagnostic performance in studies that used deep learning-based radiomics and multiple MRI sequences (e.g., DWI+DCE) was slightly higher. In addition, radiomic features derived from DWI sequences performed better than contrast-enhanced sequences in terms of specificity and sensitivity. No publication bias was found based on Deeks' funnel plot. Sensitivity analysis showed that eliminating every study one by one does not impact overall results. CONCLUSION: This meta-analysis showed that MRI-based radiomics has a good diagnostic accuracy in differentiating breast cancer patients with high Ki-67 expression from low-expressing groups. However, the sensitivity and specificity of these methods still do not surpass 90%, restricting them from being used as a supplement to current pathological assessments (e.g., biopsy or surgery) to predict Ki-67 expression accurately.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic performance of computed tomography (CT) scan-based radiomics in prediction of lymph node metastasis (LNM) in gastric cancer (GC) patients. Methods: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases were searched for original studies published until 10 November 2022, and the studies satisfying the inclusion criteria were included. Characteristics of included studies and radiomics approach and data for constructing 2 × 2 tables were extracted. The radiomics quality score (RQS) and Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies (QUADAS-2) were utilized for the quality assessment of included studies. Overall sensitivity, specificity, diagnostic odds ratio (DOR), and area under the curve (AUC) were calculated to assess diagnostic accuracy. The subgroup analysis and Spearman's correlation coefficient was done for exploration of heterogeneity sources. Results: Fifteen studies with 7,010 GC patients were included. We conducted analyses on both radiomics signature and combined (based on signature and clinical features) models. The pooled sensitivity, specificity, DOR, and AUC of radiomics models compared to combined models were 0.75 (95% CI, 0.67-0.82) versus 0.81 (95% CI, 0.75-0.86), 0.80 (95% CI, 0.73-0.86) versus 0.85 (95% CI, 0.79-0.89), 13 (95% CI, 7-23) versus 23 (95% CI, 13-42), and 0.85 (95% CI, 0.81-0.86) versus 0.90 (95% CI, 0.87-0.92), respectively. The meta-analysis indicated a significant heterogeneity among studies. The subgroup analysis revealed that arterial phase CT scan, tumoral and nodal regions of interest (ROIs), automatic segmentation, and two-dimensional (2D) ROI could improve diagnostic accuracy compared to venous phase CT scan, tumoral-only ROI, manual segmentation, and 3D ROI, respectively. Overall, the quality of studies was quite acceptable based on both QUADAS-2 and RQS tools. Conclusion: CT scan-based radiomics approach has a promising potential for the prediction of LNM in GC patients preoperatively as a non-invasive diagnostic tool. Methodological heterogeneity is the main limitation of the included studies. BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about far more stressful conditions for people worldwide. As a vulnerable group, older adults have suffered various psychological problems, such as stress, because of this pandemic and have applied various strategies to cope with the dire consequences. This study aimed to synthesize qualitative evidence regarding coping strategies for stressful situations among older adults throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: We searched electronic databases, including Scopus, Embase, PubMed, ProQuest, and the Cochrane Library, based on PRISMA standards. The protocol of this systematic review was registered on the PROSPERO (registration code: CRD42022364831). All relevant English-language articles published between 2019 and November 10, 2022, were searched. We reviewed the reference lists for all the included studies and key references. Two reviewers conducted screening, data extraction, and quality appraisal independently, with disagreements resolved by consensus with all team members. The Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) checklist was used to assess the quality of studies. A thematic synthesis of the selected studies was conducted. RESULTS: We included 13 studies in our review. Most studies were conducted in the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic. The stress caused by the COVID-19 pandemic was classified into six categories: health management challenges, stress caused by quarantine, economic challenges, media and bad news stress, virus threats, and challenges related to the use of communication technologies. The strategies used by older adults to cope with these challenges were categorized into five categories: protective strategies, avoidance strategies, maintaining social connections, meaning-based strategies, and fun strategies. This research showed that depending on the situation and conditions, older adults use various strategies to cope with COVID-19. CONCLUSION: Older adults experience much stress during the COVID-19 pandemic. In most cases, older adults can cope with these challenges with simple strategies from previous experiences and learnings. Older people require educational interventions in some cases, such as those involving communication skills. A better understanding of older adults coping strategies may enable policymakers to develop more effective policies and manage the problems of older adults in post-COVID situations.

Physiotherapy is the most commonly used treatment for stress urinary incontinence including pelvic floor muscle training, biofeedback, and electrical stimulation. This systematic review evaluated the effects of physiotherapy in patients with stress urinary incontinence compared with no treatment, placebo, sham, surgery, or other inactive control treatments. MEDLINE (via PubMed), The Cochrane Library (CENTRAL), Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, PEDro, and Trip Database were explored using applicable vocabularies for all English and Persian language investigations released from inception to January 2021. On one side, trials including physiotherapy of pelvic floor muscle training, biofeedback, and electrical stimulation and on the other, either no treatment, placebo, sham, surgery, or other inactive control treatments were included. Studies were assessed for appropriateness and methodological excellence. Two authors extracted data. Disagreements were resolved by a third opinion. Data were processed as described in the Joanna Briggs Institute Handbook. Twenty-nine trials with 2601 participants were found, but only 16 were included because of data heterogeneity. The results showed that physiotherapy interventions are better than no treatment in terms of urine leakage, but no difference was found for urinary incontinence severity. Also, physiotherapy showed favorable results over comparison groups for International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire, pad test, pelvic floor muscle function, and improvement outcomes. This systematic review supports the widespread use of pelvic physiotherapy as the first-line treatment for adult patients with stress urinary incontinence.

This study aimed to identify the indices/indicators used for evaluating the "creating supportive environments" mechanism of the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion, with a focus on built environments, in different settings. A search for literature with no time limit constraint was performed across Medline (via PubMed), Scopus, and Embase databases. Search terms included "Ottawa Charter," "health promotion," "supportive environments," "built environments," "index," and "indicator." we included the studies conducted on developing, identifying, and/or measuring health promotion indices/indicators associated with "built environments" in different settings. The review articles were excluded. Extracted data included the type of instrument used for measuring the index/indicator, the number of items, participants, settings, the purpose of indices/indicators, and a minimum of two associated examples of the indices domains/indicators. The key definitions and summarized information from studies are presented in tables. In total, 281 studies were included in the review, within which 36 indices/indicators associated with "built environment" were identified. The majority of the studies (77%) were performed in developed countries. Based on their application in different settings, the indices/indicators were categorized into seven groups: (1) Healthy Cities (n=5), (2) Healthy Municipalities and Communities (n=18), (3) Healthy Markets (n=3), (4) Healthy Villages (n=1), (5) Healthy Workplaces (n=4), (6) Health-Promoting Schools (n=3), and (7) Healthy Hospitals (n=3). Health promotion specialists, health policymakers, and social health researchers can use this collection of indices/indicators while designing/evaluating interventions to create supportive environments for health in various settings.

BACKGROUND: Contralateral Testis Hypertrophy (CTH) is a clinical marker that could be used to guide the choice of the main surgical strategy. In patients with a Non-palpable Testis (NPT), the degree of CTH as measured by testicular length or volume has been shown to be able to predict whether the undescended testis will survive. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to establish the proper cut-off for identifying non-viable testes based on the current literature. DESIGN: We systematically searched several medical databases as well as Google Scholar search engines for references and citations. All the studies that reported CTH as a result of NPT in prepubertal boys were included. Data from the included articles was gathered by two independent reviewers. The checklist developed by the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) was used to evaluate the methodological quality of the studies that were included. Due to the incredibly high degree of heterogeneity among the studies, no meta-analysis was done. RESULTS: The current systematic review included 17 studies that assessed the cut-off point to detect non-viable testis. The size and length of the testes were taken into consideration based on our findings. We found that different studies reported various ideal cut-off values for predicting non-viable testes, which can be brought on by various measuring techniques, evaluation ages, and patient groupings. The difference in testis volume was greater than the difference in its length, which can be attributable to the fact that some studies used an orchidometer to measure the testis's length directly or indirectly. CONCLUSION: According to the results of our study, it seems that defining a cut point for diagnosis of CTH based on the size of the testis, cannot demonstrate the absence of a non-palpable testis.

OBJECTIVE: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to estimate the prevalence of voice disorders and related factors in university professors. METHODS: In this systematic review, Medline, Scopus, Embase, Cochrane Library, Eric, ProQuest, Magiran, Scientific Information Database and IranDoc databases were searched. The search was limited to January 1990 and May 2020. The inclusion criteria were reports of the prevalence of voice disorders in university professors and original studies in English and Persian languages. The exclusion criteria were studies assessing voice disorders in school or music teachers; the full-text not available; and case studies, conference papers, and review studies. All eligible studies were selected and critically appraised using the Joanna Briggs Institute checklist. Finally, a meta-analysis was performed using STATA 16.0 statistical software. RESULTS: The preliminary search yielded 1251 articles and 18 of which met the eligibility criteria. The overall prevalence of voice disorders in university professors was 41% (Pooled prevalence: 0.41, 95% CI: 0.34-0.49, P-value < 0.001). Country-based analysis showed that the highest prevalence of voice disorders among university professors was in Iran 69% (Pooled prevalence: 0.69, 95% CI: 0.62-0.76) and the lowest was in China 20% (Pooled prevalence: 0.20, CI: 0.14-0.27). Among 4037 university professors, caffeine consumption was the most frequent related factor (87%) and dry throat was the most frequent symptom (46%). CONCLUSIONS: The present study yielded about 41% of the professors had voice disorders. Among the influential habits, caffeine consumption and among the symptoms, dry throat were very common in university professors. Due to the cross-sectional nature of our studies, we were not able to perform further analyses on the risk factors for voice disorders. Therefore, more longitudinal surveys are needed for reaching a more reliable and deep view into the development of voice disorders.

BACKGROUND: Pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) is a conservative treatment program for the management of lower urinary tract dysfunction (LUTD). This systematic review aimed to investigate the overall effectiveness of PFMT on LUTD in people with multiple sclerosis (MS). METHODS: Seven databases (PubMed/Medline, Scopus, PEDro, WOS, CINAHL, Cochrane, and Embase) were searched between 1990 and July 2019. We investigated urine leakage as our primary outcome. The secondary outcomes were neurogenic bladder symptoms measured by the overactive bladder questionnaire (OAB-V8 questionnaire) and the power/endurance of pelvic floor muscles. RESULTS: Fifteen studies were identified as eligible. Both urine leakage (standardized mean difference (SMD) = 0.50, 95% CI [-0.78, -0.23], and neurogenic bladder symptoms, SMD = -2.24, 95% CI [-4.44, -0.03] significantly decreased by PFMT in people with MS. PFMT increased the overall endurance and power of pelvic floor muscles moderately and significantly, SMD = 1.25, 95% CI [0.69, 1.81], and SMD = 0.64, 95% CI [0.24, 1.05], respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Moderate to high-quality studies showed the overall efficacy of PFMT in decreasing urine leakage and neurogenic bladder symptoms and increasing endurance and power of pelvic floor muscles. MS patients with lower urinary tract symptoms could benefit from PFMT in the short term.

BACKGROUND: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are about 22-nucleotide, small, noncoding RNAs that control gene expression post-transcriptionally. Helminth parasites usually express a unique repertoire of genes, including miRNAs, across different developmental stages with subtle regulatory mechanisms. OBJECTIVE: There is a necessity to investigate the involvement of miRNAs in the development of parasites, host-parasite interaction, immune evasion and their abilities to govern infection in hosts. MiRNAs present in helminth parasites have been summarized in the current systematic review (SR). METHODS: Electronic databases, including PubMed, Scopus, ProQuest, Embase, and Google Scholar search engine, were searched to identify helminth miRNA studies published from February 1993 till December 2019. Only the published articles in English were included in the study. RESULTS: A total of 1769 articles were preliminarily recorded. Following the strict inclusion and exclusion criteria, 105 studies were included in this SR. Most of these studies focused on the identification of miRNAs in helminth parasites and/or probing of differentially expressed host miRNA profiles in specific relevant tissues, while 12 studies aimed to detect parasite-derived miRNAs in host circulating system and 15 studies characterized extracellular vesicles (EV)-derived miRNAs secreted by parasites. CONCLUSION: In the current SR, information regarding all miRNAs expressed in helminth parasites has been comprehensively provided and the utility of helminth parasitesderived miRNAs in diagnosis and control of parasitic infections has been discussed. Furthermore, functional studies on helminth-derived miRNAs have also been presented.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Pelvic floor dysfunctions are common complications during the childbirth process. Pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) has been used as a conservative treatment in both prenatal and postnatal women. The aim of this project was to assess the compliance with evidence-based criteria regarding PFMT among prenatal and postnatal women in mother fit healthcare centres. METHODS: The current study was performed in three phases. Phase 1: stakeholder engagement and team establishment and baseline audit. Phase 2: Design and implementation of strategies to improve PFMT among prenatal and postnatal women in mother fit healthcare centres. Phase 3: Follow-up audit. Baseline and follow-up audit with six yes/no audit questions was performed using the Joanna Briggs Institute Practical Application of Clinical Evidence System. Fifteen midwives involved in prenatal and postnatal healthcare centres and 60 pregnant women participated in this study. RESULTS: The compliance for each audit criterion found in the baseline audit was low (0-7%). However, after implementation of the project and training the trainers (midwives), the compliance increased significantly (77-100%). CONCLUSION: The current study demonstrated that we have some problems in the healthcare system to teach PFMT to pregnant women. We should also implement similar projects in all healthcare centres country wide. Healthcare system managers should be aware of the value of holding PFMT courses for pregnant women and it is recommended to use pelvic floor physiotherapists to train midwives.

It is a major concern to select a proper ceramic with acceptable strength and esthetic and minimum antagonist wear. Therefore, different ceramics were introduced to obtain these advantages with various surface treatments. The aim of this study is to evaluate and report the wear behavior of polished and glazed feldspathic and zirconia crowns in published articles up to 2020. Five electronic databases which were used in this research were MEDLINE (via PubMed), Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Embase, and Scopus from the starting date of databases to January 2020. The Keywords "zirconia," "feldspathic," "dental ceramic," "enamel," "Y-TZP," "wear," "glazed," and "polished" were used. English articles were selected in this paper. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses statement was used as a reporting template as much as possible. Among the initially 133 articles, 59 duplicated articles were removed, and finally, 52 articles were screened and among them, only 16 articles remained for full-text regaining. The results showed that zirconia had significantly less antagonist wear than feldspathic groups, and polishing had less enamel wear than other types of surface treatment like glazing. Only one study showed that glazed zirconia can have more antagonist wear than feldspathic porcelain. Monolithic zirconia had less enamel wear than conventional zirconia and low-fusing feldspathic porcelain showed lower antagonist wear in comparing with other types of feldspathic porcelains.

Non-Pharmaceutical Public Health Interventions (NPHIs) have been used by different countries to control the spread of the COVID-19. Despite available evidence regarding the effectiveness of NPHSs, there is still no consensus about how policymakers can trust these results. Studies on the effectiveness of NPHSs are single studies conducted in specific communities. Therefore, they cannot individually prove if these interventions have been effective in reducing the spread of the infection and its adverse health outcomes. In this systematic review, we aimed to examine the effects of NPHIs on the COVID-19 case growth rate, death growth rate, Intensive Care Unit (ICU) admission, and reproduction number in countries, where NPHIs have been implemented. We searched relevant electronic databases, including Medline (via PubMed), Scopus, CINAHL, Web of Science, etc. from late December 2019 to February 1, 2021. The key terms were primarily drawn from Medical Subject Heading (MeSh and Emtree), literature review, and opinions of experts. Peer-reviewed quasi-experimental studies were included in the review. The PROSPERO registration number is CRD42020186855. Interventions were NPHIs categorized as lockdown, stay-at-home orders, social distancing, and other interventions (mask-wearing, contact tracing, and school closure). We used PRISMA 2020 guidance for abstracting the data and used Cochrane Effective Practice and Organization of Practice (EPOC) Risk of Bias Tool for quality appraisal of the studies. Hartung-Knapp-Sidik-Jonkman random-effects model was performed. Main outcomes included COVID-19 case growth rate (percentage daily changes), COVID-19 mortality growth rate (percentage daily changes), COVID-19 ICU admission (percentage daily changes), and COVID-19 reproduction number changes. Our search strategies in major databases yielded 12,523 results, which decreased to 7,540 articles after eliminating duplicates. Finally, 35 articles qualified to be included in the systematic review among which 23 studies were included in the meta-analysis. Although studies were from both low-income and high-income countries, the majority of them were from the United States (13 studies) and China (five studies). Results of the meta-analysis showed that adoption of NPHIs has resulted in a 4.68% (95% CI, -6.94 to -2.78) decrease in daily case growth rates, 4.8% (95 CI, -8.34 to -1.40) decrease in daily death growth rates, 1.90 (95% CI, -2.23 to -1.58) decrease in the COVID-19 reproduction number, and 16.5% (95% CI, -19.68 to -13.32) decrease in COVID-19 daily ICU admission. A few studies showed that, early enforcement of lockdown, when the incidence rate is not high, contributed to a shorter duration of lockdown and a lower increase of the case growth rate in the post-lockdown era. The majority of NPHIs had positive effects on restraining the COVID-19 spread. With the problems that remain regarding universal access to vaccines and their effectiveness and considering the drastic impact of the nationwide lockdown and other harsh restrictions on the economy and people's life, such interventions should be mitigated by adopting other NPHIs such as mass mask-wearing, patient/suspected case isolation strategies, and contact tracing. Studies need to address the impact of NPHIs on the population's other health problems than COVID-19.

More powerful prognostic and diagnostic tools are urgently needed for identifying and treating ovarian cancer (OC), which is the most fatal malignancy in women in developed countries. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are conservative and stable looped molecules that can regulate gene expression by competing with other endogenous microRNA sponges. This discovery provided new insight into novel methods for regulating genes that are involved in many disorders and cancers. This review focuses on the dysregulated expression of circRNAs as well as their diagnostic and prognostic values in OC. We found that studies have identified twenty-one downregulated circRNAs and fifty-seven upregulated ones. The results of these studies confirm that circRNAs might be potent biomarkers with diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic target value for OC. We also consider the connection between circRNAs and OC cell proliferation, apoptosis, metastasis, and chemotherapy resistance and sensitivity.

Recent investigations are seeking a novel treatment to control the new pandemic of coronavirus 19 (COVID-19). The aim of this systematic review was to study the effect of ozone therapy on COVID-19 patients and the available supporting evidence. Electronic databases including MEDLINE (via PubMed), EMBASE, Cochrane Library (CENTRAL), and TRIP, clinical trial registries, and preprint sources were searched for published evidence-based articles. In addition, manual searching was conducted for articles published up to April 6, 2020, using MeSH and free text keywords with no language limitation. Articles were screened, categorized, and extracted for relative data. Data were reported in a descriptive manner. Among 234 articles, 9 were selected for review of the inclusion criteria. No published original articles were found regarding the efficacy of ozone therapy on COVID-19. Five review studies were found in which the potential role of systemic ozone therapy was concluded to be effective in controlling COVID-19 because of its antiviral, oxygenation, anti-inflammatory, oxidation balancing, and immunomodulation effects. Three ongoing clinical trials were registered in China. A preliminary report of an ongoing study in Italy on 46 patients (11 intubated and 35 non-intubated) showed that in 39 (84%) of the patients, an improvement was seen. In spite of the promising background data, as well as the expert opinions and a preliminary report indicating the effectiveness of ozone, there is still not enough evidence to confirm this as a viable treatment option for COVID-19.

Postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) is the most common arrhythmia seen in the first days following cardiac surgeries. Recently, there is a growing discussion regarding the link between vitamin D deficiency and POAF development. This systematic review and meta-analysis of the observational studies aimed at evaluating the association between preoperative vitamin D deficiency and Postoperative atrial fibrillation. In this study, using PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Cochrane Libraries, we searched for records published before July 2020. Two reviewers screened for studies that examined the relationship between preoperative vitamin D levels and the generation of POAF. Data regarding study design, patient characteristics, definition of atrial fibrillation (AF), type of surgery, vitamin D levels, and measurement methods were extracted. Five studies were included in the meta-analysis. Our primary analysis showed a significant relationship between preoperative levels of vitamin D and POAF development (mean differences (MD) = -2.851, 95% confidence interval (CI) =-5.506 to -0.195; P value 0.035). Our meta-analysis suggested serum vitamin D deficiency is associated with an increased risk of POAF development. Further large scale interventional studies are needed to explore whether vitamin D supplementation will prevent POAF.

Data from preclinical studies propose nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) as a neuroprotective and bioenergetics stimulant agent to treat Alzheimer's disease (AD); however, there seems to be inconsistency between behavioral and molecular outcomes. We performed this systematic review to provide a better understanding of the effects of NAD+ in rodent AD models and to summarize the literature.Studies were identified by searching PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, Google Scholar, and the reference lists of relevant review articles published through December 2020. The search strategy was restricted to articles about NAD+, its derivatives, and their association with cognitive function in AD rodent models. The initial search yielded 320 articles, of which 11 publications were included in our systematic review.Based on the primary outcomes, it was revealed that NAD+ improves learning and memory. The secondary endpoints also showed neuroprotective effects of NAD+ on different AD models. The proposed neuroprotective mechanisms included, but were not limited to, the attenuation of the oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis, while enhancing the mitochondrial function.The current systematic review summarizes the preclinical studies on NAD+ precursors and provides evidence favoring the pro-cognitive effects of such components in rodent models of AD.

OBJECTIVES: To identify differences in architectural parameters (size, fiber/pennation angle, fiber length, and echogenicity) of the quadriceps muscle, as a whole or any individual part of it, using imaging techniques in individuals with patellofemoral pain (PFP) compared to contralateral, asymptomatic limb or separate control group. BACKGROUND: Quadriceps muscles imbalance and weakness were proposed as risk factors for developing PFP. Although the muscle architecture (size, pennation/fiber angle and fiber length) is highly associated with skeletal muscle strength, it is not clear whether atrophy or any changes in architectural parameters of the quadriceps are presented in the PFP patients. METHODS: Observational studies in which the total size of the quadriceps or individual parts of it were measured using imaging techniques in the PFP patients were included in this review. Electronic databases (PubMed, SCOPUS, PEDro, CINAHL, WOS, and EMBASE) were searched between January 1990 and December 2019 with no restriction of language. Study selection and data extraction and quality assessment were conducted by two independent reviewers. RESULTS: Five cross-sectional studies were eligible to include in this review. Three out of five included studies that assessed the total size of the quadriceps and reported no significant differences between the PFP and healthy control group. Two out of five of the studies assessed the total size of the quadriceps between the symptomatic and asymptomatic limb of the PFP patients and reported the statistical difference between limbs. Only one study measured the fiber angle of the VMO muscle at the patella. Controversial results were found between studies that assessed the size of individual parts of the quadriceps. CONCLUSION: Due to the controversial results of the included studies, this systematic review failed to draw a conclusion on the role of quadriceps atrophy in PFP pathology. The limitation in PFP literature considering pennation/fiber angle, echogenicity and fiber length of individual parts of the quadriceps muscle, rises the need for research that focuses on the biomechanical properties of the quadriceps in PFP patients.

PURPOSE: Acephalic spermatozoa syndrome (ASS) is known as a severe type of teratozoospermia, defined as semen composed of mostly headless spermatozoa that affect male fertility. In this regard, this systematic review aimed to discuss gene variants associated with acephalic spermatozoa phenotype as well as the clinical outcomes of intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) treatment for the acephalic spermatozoa-associated male infertility. METHODS: A systematic search was performed on PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Ovid databases until May 17, 2020. This systematic scoping review was reported in terms of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) statement. RESULTS: Twenty articles were included in this systematic review. Whole-exome and Sanger sequencing have helped in the identification of variants in SUN5, PMFBP1, BRDT, TSGA10, DNAH6, HOOK1, and CEP112 genes as possible causes of this phenotype in humans. The results of the ICSI are conflicting due to both positive and negative reports of ICSI outcomes. CONCLUSION: ASS has a genetic origin, and several genetic alterations related to the pathogenesis of this anomaly have been recently identified. Notably, only SUN5 and PMFBP1 mutations are well-known to be implicated in ASS. Accordingly, more functional studies are needed to confirm the pathogenicity of other variants. ICSI could provide a promising treatment for acephalic spermatozoa-associated male infertility. Besides the importance of sperm head-tail junction integrity, some other factors, whether within the sperm cell or female factors, may be involved in the ICSI outcome.
