RESUMEN

A 65-year-old male with a history of smoking since 30 years presented with breathlessness, hemoptysis, multiple swellings all over the body, and weakness in September 2010 at our hospital. Clinically, a diagnosis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) with cutaneous lymphoma or soft tissue tumor was made. Chest X-ray (CXR) and computed tomography (CT) scan revealed a neoplastic lesion in the right lung with secondary cavitation. Biopsy of the cutaneous nodules showed metastatic deposits from squamous cell carcinoma. Metastatic skin cancer is a relatively rare complication of internal malignancy. The clinical features of metastatic skin disease vary enormously. They may present as erysipeloid, sclerodermoid, alopecia neoplastica or in an inflammatory or bullous form or as multiple nodules as in our case. A high index of suspicion for metastatic deposits is required in an elderly male patient who is a known case of lung cancer or even one who is a chronic smoker and presents with such cutaneous lesions.

RESUMEN

Mimusops elengi is Indian native plant and is used for a long time in the history of the medicine. Plant was well studied in majority of the world because of its high potential medicinal value. Traditionally all different part of this plant, namely leaf, root, fruit, seed, bark and flower are used to cure various kinds of disorders. Information compiled here will be useful to improve the present investigation of several health care research regarding the Mimusops elengi.

RESUMEN

The use of antibody and peptide functionalized semiconductor quantum dots holds considerable potential for specific labeling of target antigens and high resolution optical imaging of biological preparations. Despite this potential, their use in neuroscience is not yet widespread; a number of technical and methodological challenges must still be overcome in order to produce reliable and reproducible labeling protocols. We have optimized and used anti-GFAP functionalized quantum dots for specific labeling of intermediate filaments in astrocyte and Müller glial cells in sections of intact rat neural sensory retina and dissociated primary spinal cord astrocytes. These techniques produced stable and robust imaging of retinal astrocytes and Müller cells with minimal non-specific background labeling and intense fluorescence resulting in a high signal to noise ratio. This resulted in clear and efficient labeling of normal levels of GFAP in the retina and the ability to differentiate it from pathologically high levels of GFAP associated with reactive gliosis in a laser induced injury model. Labeling and imaging of dissociated astrocytes demonstrated the presence of what appeared to be highly complex organizations of fine intermediate filaments that spanned between cells to form intricate networks of filamentous intercellular bridges. The presence of these structures in situ and in vivo as well as any potential functions remain to be determined, but their identification should be greatly facilitated by quantum dot labeling protocols.

RESUMEN

Merkel cell carcinoma is an uncommon, highly malignant, primary cutaneous neuroendocrine tumour mostly occurring as a solitary nodule on the head or on the extremities. It has high recurrence rate. We hereby report a case of Merkel cell carcinoma in a young woman.

RESUMEN

Antibody conjugated quantum dots are an emerging technology for high-resolution labeling of biological systems. In this work we determined the number of functional antibodies (i.e., antibodies that are sterically available for functional binding to target proteins) conjugated to semiconductor quantum dots. This is critical for the interpretation of biological data labeled with these methods. We found that the number of available functional antibodies varied significantly for different conjugation methods and are lower than previously estimated. These results may suggest potential strategies for improving quantum dot labeling of biological preparations.
