Introduction: Medication errors can lead to significant adverse events. Nearly 50% of medication errors occur during the prescription-writing stage of the medication use process, and effective interprofessional collaboration and communication are key to reducing error in this process. Methods: We developed a three-part, 60-minute, interprofessional education activity providing medical, physician assistant, and pharmacy students the opportunity to practice collegial interprofessional communication surrounding prescribing practices. Learners met virtually initially as a large group and divided into small groups facilitated by a health professional. Part 1 involved reviewing two prescriptions prepared by learners; part 2 was a discussion about the education, roles, and responsibilities of each profession; and part 3 focused on identifying prescription errors in examples provided by faculty. Students completed a post-pre survey measuring their perception of learning the Interprofessional Collaborative Competency Attainment Survey (ICCAS) areas. Results: Of 317 participants (151 doctor of osteopathy, 68 master of physician assistant studies, and 98 doctor of pharmacy students), 286 completed the post-pre survey, for a 90% response rate. Students reported statistically significant (p < .001) increases in all 20 questions spanning the six ICCAS areas. Discussion: The virtual format allowed multiple institutions to participate from various locations. It broadened the learners' experience by fostering interaction among those with varied perspectives and allowed collaboration between locations and programs that otherwise could not have participated. The activity introduced students to virtual collaboration and key telehealth skills, enhancing their confidence and familiarity with virtual interactions in a professional setting.

Importance: The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in multiple socially restrictive public health measures and reported negative mental health impacts in youths. Few studies have evaluated incidence rates by sex, region, and social determinants across an entire population. Objective: To estimate the incidence of hospitalizations for mental health conditions, stratified by sex, region, and social determinants, in children and adolescents (hereinafter referred to as youths) and young adults comparing the prepandemic and pandemic-prevalent periods. Design, Setting, and Participants: This Canadian population-based repeated ecological cross-sectional study used health administrative data, extending from April 1, 2016, to March 31, 2023. All youths and young adults from 6 to 20 years of age in each of the Canadian provinces and territories were included. Data were provided by the Canadian Institute for Health Information for all provinces except Quebec; the Institut National d'Excellence en Santé et en Services Sociaux provided aggregate data for Quebec. Exposures: The COVID-19-prevalent period, defined as April 1, 2020, to March 31, 2023. Main Outcomes and Measures: The main outcome measures were the prepandemic and COVID-19-prevalent incidence rates of hospitalizations for anxiety, mood disorders, eating disorders, schizophrenia or psychosis, personality disorders, substance-related disorders, and self-harm. Secondary measures included hospitalization differences by sex, age group, and deprivation as well as emergency department visits for the same mental health conditions. Results: Among Canadian youths and young adults during the study period, there were 218 101 hospitalizations for mental health conditions (ages 6 to 11 years: 5.8%, 12 to 17 years: 66.9%, and 18 to 20 years: 27.3%; 66.0% female). The rate of mental health hospitalizations decreased from 51.6 to 47.9 per 10 000 person-years between the prepandemic and COVID-19-prevalent years. However, the pandemic was associated with a rise in hospitalizations for anxiety (incidence rate ratio [IRR], 1.11; 95% CI, 1.08-1.14), personality disorders (IRR, 1.21; 95% CI, 1.16-1.25), suicide and self-harm (IRR, 1.10; 95% CI, 1.07-1.13), and eating disorders (IRR, 1.66; 95% CI, 1.60-1.73) in females and for eating disorders (IRR, 1.47; 95% CI, 1.31-1.67) in males. In both sexes, there was a decrease in hospitalizations for mood disorders (IRR, 0.84; 95% CI, 0.83-0.86), substance-related disorders (IRR, 0.83; 95% CI, 0.81-0.86), and other mental health disorders (IRR, 0.78; 95% CI, 0.76-0.79). Conclusions and Relevance: This cross-sectional study of Canadian youths and young adults found a rise in anxiety, personality disorders, and suicidality in females and a rise in eating disorders in both sexes in the COVID-19-prevalent period. These results suggest that in future pandemics, policymakers should support youths and young adults who are particularly vulnerable to deterioration in mental health conditions during public health restrictions, including eating disorders, anxiety, and suicidality.

AIM: To compare the effects of Cervical Access Cavity (CervAC) and Traditional Access Cavity (TradAC) on root canal preparation, root canal filling, and fracture resistance in mandibular incisors. METHODOLOGY: Twenty recently extracted and intact mandibular incisors were initially scanned using a micro-CT device. The specimens were anatomically matched to create two groups (n = 10). A wedge-shaped non-carious cervical lesion (NCCL) was created on the buccal aspect of all teeth using a double-faced segmented diamond disc. In group 1, a TradAC was prepared, whilst in group 2, access was created through the simulated NCCL using a round diamond bur 1012. After root canal preparation with Rotate instruments sizes 15/0.04, 20/0.04, and 25/0.04, the teeth were scanned again and evaluated for root canal volume and surface area, static voxels, volume of removed dental tissue, and dentine thickness. After that, the root canals were filled using the single-cone technique, teeth were restored with composite resin, and subsequently rescanned to calculate the volume of filling materials and voids. Then, the restored teeth were subjected to fracture resistance tests using a universal testing machine. Statistical comparisons between groups were performed with the Mann-Whitney test or the Student's t-test, with a statistical significance level of 5%. RESULTS: Statistical comparisons indicated no significant differences between groups in terms of root canal volume, surface area, static voxels, removed root dentine, root canal filling volume, percentage of voids, or fracture resistance load (p > .05). Conversely, teeth prepared with TradAC showed a significantly higher percentage of dental tissue removed from the crown (p = .001) and a greater volume of filling material remnants in the pulp chamber (p < .001) compared to the CervAC group. A significantly lower percentage reduction in dentine thickness was observed only on the mesial aspect of root at Level 1 in TradAC group (p = .008). CONCLUSIONS: CervAC can be considered a viable alternative approach in the presence of NCCL in mandibular incisors.

AIM: To test the influences of patient, safety event and nurse characteristics on nurse judgements of credibility, importance and intent to report patients' safety concerns. DESIGN: Factorial survey experiment. METHODS: A total of 240 nurses were recruited and completed an online survey including demographic information and responses to eight factorial vignettes consisting of unique combinations of eight patient and event factors. Hierarchical multivariate analysis was used to test influences of vignette factors and nurse characteristics on nurse judgements. RESULTS: The intraclass coefficients for nurse judgements suggest that the variation among nurses exceeded the influence of contextual vignette factors. Several significant sources of nurse variation were identified, including race/ethnicity, suggesting a complex relationship between nurses' characteristics and their potential biases, and the influence of personal and patient factors on nurses' judgements, including the decision to report safety concerns. CONCLUSION: Nurses are key players in the system to manage patient safety concerns. Variation among nurses and how they respond to scenarios of patient safety concerns highlight the need for nurse-level intervention. IMPLICATIONS FOR THE PROFESSION AND PATIENT CARE: Complex factors influence nurses' judgement, interpretation and reporting of patients' safety concerns. IMPACT: Understanding nurse judgement regarding patient-expressed safety concerns is critical for designing processes and systems that promote reporting. Multiple event and patient characteristics (type of event and apparent harm, and patient gender, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and communication approach) as well as participant characteristics (race/ethnicity, gender, years of experience and primary hospital area) impacted participants' judgements of credibility, degree of concern and intent to report. These findings will help guide patient safety nurse education and training. REPORTING METHOD: STROBE guidelines. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: Members of the public, including patient advocates, were involved in content validation of the vignette scenarios, norming photographs used in the factorial survey and testing the survey functionality.

BACKGROUND: Effective infection prevention and control programs can positively influence quality of care, increase patient safety, and protect health care providers. Chlorine, a widely used and effective chemical disinfectant, is recommended for infection prevention and control in health care settings. However, lack of consistent chlorine availability limits its use. Electrolytic chlorine generators can address limited chlorine supply and stockouts by enabling onsite production of readily usable, high-quality chlorine cost-effectively. We report the feasibility (i.e., performance, acceptability, chlorine availability, and cost) of the electrolytic STREAM Disinfectant Generator (Aqua Research, New Mexico, USA) device for infection prevention and control in primary health care facilities in Uganda. METHODS: We installed STREAM devices in 10 primary health care facilities in central and western Uganda. Commercial chlorine inventory records (stock cards) were reviewed in each facility to calculate average liters of chlorine received and used per month. These values were compared with actual STREAM chlorine production volumes over the study period to determine its impact on chlorine availability. We collected acceptability data from a purposive sample of device users (n = 16), hospital administrators (n = 10), and district health officers (n = 6) who had been directly involved in the operation or supervision of the STREAM device. We descriptively analyzed the acceptability data by user group and evaluated qualitative responses manually using a thematic approach. Cost data were normalized and modeled to determine a break-even and cost-savings analysis across a five-year period (the minimum expected lifespan of the STREAM device). RESULTS: Chlorine was consistently available without any reported stockouts during the evaluation period. STREAM chlorine production resulted in a 36.9 percent cost-savings over a five-year period compared to commercial chlorine. User acceptability of the STREAM device was high among STREAM operators, hospital administrators, and district health officers, with all respondents reporting that STREAM moderately or significantly improved infection prevention and control practices in the health facility. Overall, 88 percent of device users and 100 percent of hospital administrators wished to continue using the STREAM device instead of commercial chlorine products. CONCLUSION: The STREAM device has demonstrated significant potential to strengthen infection prevention and control practices in health care facilities in Uganda. Based on the preliminary results, the STREAM device should be considered a promising tool for district hospitals and large health centers facing infection prevention and control challenges in Uganda and elsewhere, provided water and electricity are available. Going forward, implementation of the STREAM device could also be considered in smaller health care facilities in Uganda and elsewhere.

OBJECTIVE: Traditionally, expert surgeons have provided surgical trainees with feedback about their simulation performance, including for asynchronous practice. Unfortunately, innumerable time demands may limit experts' ability to provide feedback. It is unknown whether and how peer feedback is an effective mechanism to help residents acquire laparoscopic skill in an asynchronous setting. As such, we aimed to assess the effect of peer feedback on laparoscopic performance and determine how residents perceive giving and receiving peer feedback. DESIGN: We conducted a convergent mixed methods study. In the quantitative component, we randomized residents to receive feedback on home laparoscopic tasks from peers or faculty. We then held an end-of-curriculum, in-person laparoscopic assessment with members from both groups and compared performance on the in-person assessment between the groups. In the qualitative component, we conducted interviews with resident participants to explore experiences with feedback and performance. Three authors coded and rigorously reviewed interview data using a directed content analysis. SETTING: We performed this study at a single tertiary academic institution: the University of California, San Francisco. PARTICIPANTS: We invited 47 junior residents in general surgery, obstetrics-gynecology, and urology to participate, of whom 37 (79%) participated in the home curriculum and 25 (53%) participated in the end-of-curriculum assessment. RESULTS: Residents in the peer feedback group scored similarly on the final assessment (mean 70.7%; SD 16.1%) as residents in the faculty feedback group (mean 71.8%; SD 11.9%) (p = 0.86). Through qualitative analysis of interviews with 13 residents, we identified key reasons for peer feedback's efficacy: shared mental models, the ability to brainstorm and appreciate new approaches, and a low-stakes learning environment. CONCLUSIONS: We found that peer and faculty feedback led to similar performance in basic laparoscopy and that residents engaged positively with peer feedback, suggesting that peer feedback can be used when residents learn basic laparoscopy.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Pharmacy robberies are a common occurrence. From 2010 to 2019, there were over 7500 prescription drug-related armed robbery incidents in the United States. A lecture on pharmacy robbery was added to the pharmacy curriculum in 2017 at Butler University. The primary objective of this study was to assess whether the pharmacy robbery lecture given during the first year of the pharmacy program is adequate, with a secondary objective comparing the results of this survey to one conducted prior to the curricular addition. This information provides an opportunity for schools of pharmacy to consider adding or enhancing drug diversion content into their curriculum. EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITY AND SETTING: A cross-sectional survey of all students enrolled in each professional year of the Doctor of Pharmacy program was conducted spring 2022 to collect information on pharmacy students' knowledge and experience regarding community pharmacy robberies and their perceptions of the pharmacy robbery education in the curriculum. FINDINGS: A total of 285 of 407 students responded for a 70% response rate. More than half (53.5%) feel the pharmacy robbery education received is adequate and 63.9% feel prepared to properly manage a pharmacy robbery situation. The survey asked two pharmacy robbery knowledge-based questions and most students selected the correct response to both (89.9% and 97.8%). More than one-fourth (27.1%) of the respondents reported that the pharmacy they work/worked at had been robbed. When asked if students considered changing their career path because of pharmacy robberies, 9% responded yes. SUMMARY: Pharmacy robbery still exists, and having proper education helps students prepare for and handle community pharmacy robbery situations.

The Earth functions as an integrated system-its current habitability to complex life is an emergent property dependent on interactions among biological, chemical, and physical components. As global warming affects ecosystem structure and function, so too will the biosphere affect climate by altering atmospheric gas composition and planetary albedo. Constraining these ecosystem-climate feedbacks is essential to accurately predict future change and develop mitigation strategies; however, the interplay among ecosystem processes complicates the assessment of their impact. Here, we explore the state-of-knowledge on how ecological and biological processes (e.g., competition, trophic interactions, metabolism, and adaptation) affect the directionality and magnitude of feedbacks between ecosystems and climate, using illustrative examples from the aquatic sphere. We argue that, despite ample evidence for the likely significance of many, our present understanding of the combinatorial effects of ecosystem dynamics precludes the robust quantification of most ecologically driven climate feedbacks. Constraining these effects must be prioritized within the ecological sciences for only by studying the biosphere as both subject and arbiter of global climate can we develop a sufficiently holistic view of the Earth system to accurately predict Earth's future and unravel its past.


La Terre fonctionne comme un système intégré­son habitabilité pour une vie complexe est une propriété émergente qui dépend des interactions entre les composantes biologiques, chimiques et physiques. Le réchauffement climatique affecte la structure et la fonction des écosystèmes, et en retour, la biosphère affecte également le climat en modifiant la composition des gaz atmosphériques et l'albédo planétaire. Il est essentiel de quantifier ces rétroactions entre les écosystèmes et le climat afin de prédire avec précision les changements futurs et élaborer des stratégies d'atténuation; cependant, l'interaction entre les processus écologiques complique l'évaluation de leurs impacts. Dans cet article, nous examinons l'état des connaissances sur la façon dont les processus écologiques et biologiques (par exemple, la concurrence, les interactions trophiques, le métabolisme, l'adaptation) affectent la directionnalité et l'ampleur des rétroactions entre les écosystèmes et le climat à l'aide d'exemples issus du monde aquatique. Nous soutenons que, malgré les nombreuses preuves de l'importance de plusieurs de ces rétroactions, notre compréhension limitée des effets additifs des processus écosystémiques empêche de faire une quantification robuste de la plupart des rétroactions climatiques d'origine écologique. Circonscrire ces effets doit être une priorité pour les sciences aquatiques, car ce n'est qu'en étudiant la biosphère en tant que sujet et arbitre du climat planétaire que nous pourrons développer une vision suffisamment holistique du système terrestre pour prédire avec précision l'avenir de la Terre et élucider son passé.

Protein aggregation is a common age-associated process and can be a pathological hallmark of various neurodegenerative conditions, possibly because of an age-associated decline in the activity of components of the proteostasis network. The specific molecular drivers of protein aggregation in certain cell types are not well understood, posing tremendous challenges to current research aimed at devising strategies to treat neurodegenerative diseases. This preface introduces the special issue "Aging and Neurodegeneration: from molecular mechanisms to therapeutic interventions," featuring articles that assess the drivers of pathology in the aging cell, including oxidative stress, protein glycation/aggregation, and mitochondrial impairment.

To acquire the ability to fertilize the egg, mammalian spermatozoa must undergo a series of changes occurring within the highly synchronized and specialized environment of the female reproductive tract, collectively known as capacitation. In an attempt to replicate this process in vitro, various culture media for mouse sperm were formulated over the past decades, sharing a similar overall composition but differing mainly in ion concentrations and metabolic substrates. The widespread use of the different media to study the mechanisms of capacitation might hinder a comprehensive understanding of this process, as the medium could become a confounding variable in the analysis. In this context, the present side-by-side study compares the influence of four commonly used culture media (FD, HTF and two TYH versions) on mouse sperm capacitation. We evaluated the induction of protein kinase A phosphorylation pathway, motility, hyperactivation and acrosome reaction. Additionally, in vitro fertilization and embryo development were also assessed. By analyzing these outcomes in two mouse colonies with different reproductive performance, our study provides critical insights to improve the global understanding of sperm function. The results obtained highlight the importance of considering variations in medium composition, and their potential implications for the future interpretation of results.

Delivering COVID-19 vaccines with 4-6 weeks shelf life remains one of Africa's most pressing challenges. The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) leadership recognised that COVID-19 vaccines donated to many African countries were at risk of expiry considering the short shelf life on delivery in the Member States and slow vaccine uptake rates. Thus, a streamlined rapid response system, the urgent support mechanism, was developed to assist countries accelerate COVID-19 vaccine uptake. We describe the achievements and lessons learnt during implementation of the urgent support mechanism in eight African countries. An Africa CDC team was rapidly deployed to meet with the Ministry of Health of each country alerted for COVID-19 vaccine expiry and identified national implementing partners to quickly develop operational work plans and strategies to scale up the urgent use of the vaccines. The time between the initiation of alerts to the start of the implementation was typically within 2 weeks. A total of approximately 2.5 million doses of vaccines, costing $900 000, were prevented from expiration. The urgent support has also contributed to the increased COVID-19 vaccination coverage in the Member States from 16.1% at the initiation to 25.3% at the end of the urgent support. Some of the effective strategies used by the urgent support mechanism included coordination between Africa CDC and country vaccine task forces, establishment of vaccination centres, building the capacity of routine and surge health workforce, procurement and distribution of vaccine ancillaries, staff training, advocacy and sensitisation events, and use of trusted religious scriptures and community influencers to support public health messages. The urgent support mechanism demonstrated a highly optimised process and serves as a successful example for acceleration and integration of vaccination into different healthcare delivery points.

Hyperpolarization of the membrane potential (Em), a phenomenon regulated by SLO3 channels, stands as a central feature in sperm capacitation-a crucial process conferring upon sperm the ability to fertilize the oocyte. In vitro studies demonstrated that Em hyperpolarization plays a pivotal role in facilitating the mechanisms necessary for the development of hyperactivated motility (HA) and acrosomal exocytosis (AE) occurrence. Nevertheless, the physiological significance of sperm Em within the female reproductive tract remains unexplored. As an approach to this question, we studied sperm migration and AE incidence within the oviduct in the absence of Em hyperpolarization using a novel mouse model established by crossbreeding of SLO3 knock-out (KO) mice with EGFP/DsRed2 mice. Sperm from this model displays impaired HA and AE in vitro. Interestingly, examination of the female reproductive tract shows that SLO3 KO sperm can reach the ampulla, mirroring the quantity of sperm observed in wild-type (WT) counterparts, supporting that the HA needed to reach the fertilization site is not affected. However, a noteworthy distinction emerges-unlike WT sperm, the majority of SLO3 KO sperm arrive at the ampulla with their acrosomes still intact. Of the few SLO3 KO sperm that do manage to reach the oocytes within this location, fertilization does not occur, as indicated by the absence of sperm pronuclei in the MII-oocytes recovered post-mating. In vitro, SLO3 KO sperm fail to penetrate the ZP and fuse with the oocytes. Collectively, these results underscore the vital role of Em hyperpolarization in AE and fertilization within their physiological context, while also revealing that Em is not a prerequisite for the development of the HA motility, essential for sperm migration through the female tract to the ampulla.

Background: Effective implementation of new curricula requires faculty to be knowledgeable about curriculum goals and have the appropriate pedagogical skills to implement the curriculum, even more so if the new curriculum is being deployed at multiple institutions. In this paper, we describe the process of creating a common faculty development program to train cross-institutional faculty developers to support the implementation of national harmonized medicine and nursing curricula. Methods: A five-step approach was used, including a cross-institutional needs assessment survey for faculty development needs, the development of a generic faculty development program, the identification and training of cross-institutional faculty educators, and the implementation of cross-institutional faculty capacity-building workshops. Results: A list of common cross-cutting faculty development needs for teaching and learning was identified from the needs assessment survey and used to develop an accredited, cross-institutional faculty development program for competency-based learning and assessment. A total of 24 cross-institutional faculty developers were identified and trained in 8 core learning and assessment workshops. A total of 18 cross-institutional and 71 institutional workshops were conducted, of which 1292 faculty members and 412 residents were trained, and three cross-institutional educational research projects were implemented. Conclusion: The success attained in this study shows that the use of cross-institutional faculty developers is a viable model and sustainable resource that can be used to support the implementation of harmonized national curricula.

Photoaging is the premature aging of the skin caused by prolonged exposure to solar radiation. The visual alterations manifest as wrinkles, reduced skin elasticity, uneven skin tone, as well as other signs that surpass the expected outcomes of natural aging. Beyond these surface changes, there is a complex interplay of molecular alterations, encompassing shifts in cellular function, DNA damage, and protein composition disruptions. This data descriptor introduces a unique dataset derived from ten individuals, each with a minimum of 18 years of professional experience as a driver, who are asymmetrically and chronically exposed to solar radiation due to their driving orientation. Skin samples were independently collected from each side of the face using a microdermabrasion-like procedure and analyzed on an Exploris 240 mass spectrometer. Our adapted proteomic statistical framework leverages the sample pairing to provide robust insights. This dataset delves into the molecular differences in exposed skin and serves as a foundational resource for interdisciplinary research in photodermatology, targeted skincare treatments, and computational modelling of skin health.

AIM: This longitudinal study aimed to evaluate the electromyographic activity of the masseter and temporal muscles in adult women who underwent buccal fat removal. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sample consisted of 20 healthy adult women with no temporomandibular dysfunction and normal occlusion, who were assessed before, 30, and 60 days after the surgery. The electromyographic signal of the masseter and temporal muscles was captured through mandibular tasks including rest, protrusion, right and left laterality, and maximum voluntary contraction with and without parafilm. The results obtained were tabulated and the Shapiro-Wilk normality test was performed, which indicated a normal distribution. Statistical analysis was performed using the repeated measures test (p < 0.05). RESULTS: Significant differences were observed between time periods in maximum voluntary contraction for the left masseter muscle (p = 0.006) and in maximum voluntary contraction with parafilm for the right temporal (p = 0.03) and left temporal (p = 0.03) muscles. CONCLUSION: Bichectomy surgery did not modify the electromyographic activity of the masseter and temporal muscles during the rest task but may have influenced variations in the electromyographic signal during different mandibular tasks after 60 days of surgery, suggesting compensatory adaptations and functional recovery. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Understanding the impact of buccal fat removal surgery on the stomatognathic system function provides insights into postoperative functional recovery and potential compensatory adaptations, guiding clinical management and rehabilitation strategies for patients undergoing such procedures. Long-term ecological time series provide a unique perspective on the emergent properties of ecosystems. In aquatic systems, phytoplankton form the base of the food web and their biomass, measured as the concentration of the photosynthetic pigment chlorophyll a (chl a), is an indicator of ecosystem quality. We analyzed temporal trends in chl a from the Long-Term Plankton Time Series in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, USA, a temperate estuary experiencing long-term warming and changing anthropogenic nutrient inputs. Dynamic linear models were used to impute and model environmental variables (1959 to 2019) and chl a concentrations (1968 to 2019). A long-term chl a decrease was observed with an average decline in the cumulative annual chl a concentration of 49% and a marked decline of 57% in winter-spring bloom magnitude. The long-term decline in chl a concentration was directly and indirectly associated with multiple environmental factors that are impacted by climate change (e.g., warming temperatures, water column stratification, reduced nutrient concentrations) indicating the importance of accounting for regional climate change effects in ecosystem-based management. Analysis of seasonal phenology revealed that the winter-spring bloom occurred earlier, at a rate of 4.9 ± 2.8 d decade-1. Finally, the high degree of temporal variation in phytoplankton biomass observed in Narragansett Bay appears common among estuaries, coasts, and open oceans. The commonality among these marine ecosystems highlights the need to maintain a robust set of phytoplankton time series in the coming decades to improve signal-to-noise ratios and identify trends in these highly variable environments.

Okadaic acid (OA) is one of the most potent marine biotoxins, causing diarrheal shellfish poisoning (DSP). The proliferation of microalgae that produce OA and its analogues is frequent, threatening human health and socioeconomic development. Several methods have been tested to remove this biotoxin from aquatic systems, yet none has proven enough efficacy to solve the problem. In this work, we synthesized and characterized low-cost composites and tested their efficacy for OA adsorption in saltwater. For the synthesis of the composites, the following starting materials were considered: chitosan of low and medium molecular weight (CH-LW and CH-MW, respectively), activated carbon (AC), and montmorillonite (MMT). Characterization by vibrational spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and microscopy revealed differences in the mode of interaction of CH-LW and CH-MW with AC and MMT, suggesting that the interaction of CH-MW with MMT has mainly occurred on the surface of the clay particles and no sufficient intercalation of CH-MW into the MMT interlayers took place. Among the composites tested (CH-LW/AC, CH-MW/AC, CH-MW/AC/MMT, and CH-MW/MMT), CH-MW/MMT was the one that revealed lower OA adsorption efficiency, given the findings evidenced by the structural characterization. On the contrary, the CH-MW/AC composite revealed the highest average percentage of OA adsorption (53 ± 11%). Although preliminary, the results obtained in this work open up good perspectives for the use of this type of composite material as an adsorbent in the removal of OA from marine environments.

The muscular dystrophy with myositis (mdm) mouse model results in a severe muscular dystrophy due to an 83-amino-acid deletion in the N2A region of titin, an expanded sarcomeric protein that functions as a molecular spring which senses and modulates the response to mechanical forces in cardiac and skeletal muscles. ANKRD1 is one of the muscle ankyrin repeat domain proteins (MARPs) a family of titin-associated, stress-response molecules and putative transducers of stretch-induced signaling in skeletal muscle. The aberrant over-activation of Nuclear factor Kappa B (NF-κB) and the Ankyrin-repeat domain containing protein 1 (ANKRD1) occurs in several models of progressive muscle disease including Duchenne muscular dystrophy. We hypothesized that mechanical regulation of ANKRD1 is mediated by NF-κB activation in skeletal muscles and that this mechanism is perturbed by small deletion of the stretch-sensing titin N2A region in the mdm mouse. We applied static mechanical stretch of the mdm mouse diaphragm and cyclic mechanical stretch of C2C12 myotubes to examine the interaction between NF-κΒ and ANKRD1 expression utilizing Western blot and qRTPCR. As seen in skeletal muscles of other severe muscular dystrophies, an aberrant increased basal expression of NF-κB and ANKRD1 were observed in the diaphragm muscles of the mdm mice. Our data show that in the mdm diaphragm, basal levels of NF-κB are increased, and pharmacological inhibition of NF-κB does not alter basal levels of ANKRD1. Alternatively, NF-κB inhibition did alter stretch-induced ANKRD1 upregulation. These data show that NF-κB activity is at least partially responsible for the stretch-induced expression of ANKRD1.
