RESUMEN

The aim of the study was to determine the usefulness of educational video games as a variety applied to the traditional teaching of pharmacology in topics of antifungal and hypolipidemic drugs. Sixty-six volunteers were divided into control group (n = 33) and experimental group (n = 33). The first group received traditional seminar only, and the second played video game designed with the use of Kahoot! platform after the seminar. The assessment of knowledge was conducted with the use of three tests: pre-test was presented before seminar, post-test after seminar (for control group) or after playing the video game (for experimental group), and test no. 3 took place 4 weeks later. Analysis of tests' scores with respect to both topics resulted in the observation that the control and experimental groups show statistically significant improvement in knowledge, whether it was measured after the seminar or 4 weeks later. However, the results of experimental group were statistically better in comparison to the control group. It proves that electronic GBL (game-based learning) applied to standard educational processes increases short- and long-term knowledge retention compared to traditional seminars.

RESUMEN

Chronic wound infection is one of the factors that hinder or prevent its healing. The incidence of infection may vary depending on the type of wound. It is estimated that clinically significant infection in diabetic foot syndrome occurs in up to 30% of patients. Accurate diagnosis of infection features and proper microbiological tests are crucial for introducing of appropriate local and often systemic treatment. The aim of the study was a comparative analysis of the microbiota found in infected chronic wounds in patients from Poland, consulted on an outpatient basis at a wound care center in 2013-2021. The indication for microbiology culture tests was the detection of local signs of infection, and sampling was preceded by appropriate wound debridement. The standard culture technique was a deep-tissue biopsy. Material for the study was collected from 1,199 patients. Overall, 3,917 results of microbiological tests were subjected to retrospective analysis. The paper presents the results in the form of the number of cultured microorganisms and their relative incidence as percentages, considering the division into the types of wounds from which the material was obtained. The most frequently isolated microorganisms in the analyzed group were Staphylococcus aureus (14.3% of this group were MRSA - methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) and Enterococcus faecalis (2.4% of this group were VRE - vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus). Further analysis of such an extensive database, especially regarding drug susceptibility of isolated microorganisms, seems crucial to elaborate new recommendations for empirical antibacterial treatment of infected chronic wounds.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to find out whether INF-beta-1a influences the immune profile of peripheral blood (PB) leukocytes in MS patients. METHOD: We have studied 20 patients with relapsing-remitting form of MS treated with INF-beta-1a using twocolor cytometry. We determined immune cells phenotypes and production of some cytokines: IL-4, IL-10, IL-12, IFN-gamma, before drug administration and after starting the treatment. RESULTS: In MS patients an increased percentage of CD14(+)CD86(+) cells and CD3(+)CD25(+) cells was noticed after 6, 9 and 12 months of INF-beta-1a therapy. Among cytokine-producing cells we noted an increased fraction of CD3(+)IL-4, CD14(+)IL-10 and CD14(+)IL-12 cells after 12 months, which decreased to the level observed before treatment after 24-month therapy. CONCLUSIONS: IFN-beta-1a treatment was associated with significant changes in immune response. This effect was mostly evident within the first year of treatment.
