RESUMEN

Authors are discussing dilemma about necessary diagnostic procedure in making decision for surgical treatment of the carotid disease. Attitudes are changing and the old opinion of the necessity for angiogram of extra cranial blood vessels is substituted by the opinion that CDS (Color Duplex Scan) is satisfactory in the majority of cases to indicate of the surgical treatment. Comparing the invasive and noninvasive diagnostic's with operative findings, authors empirically confirm the given hypotheses, looking back to the cases where angiogram is necessary. The following issues were discussed: Estimate of the locaton of maximal shrinking, degree of shrinking, length of shrinking and characteristics of plaque as the most important parameters for indication and operative tactics. Diagnostics with CDS is shown as reliable with high degree of matching with operative findings.

RESUMEN

Deep vein thrombosis is important social and health care problem for its high incidence, pulmonary embolism-related mortality, and long-term sequelae which may be disabling (post-thrombotic syndrome and ulceration). The aim of our work was to determine the diagnostic potential and importance of D dimer in the early detection of deep vein thrombosis of lower extremities. Prospectively we have analyzed a group of 47 patients who were admitted to vascular department of Surgical Clinic in Nis during the period from 1.8.2001. to 31.3.2003. with echosonographically verified deep vein thrombosis of no more than 48 hours of duration. D dimer was measured before anticoagulant treatment started using commercial Nycomed test. The activation of coagulation process was detected with increase in D dimer values in 44 out of 47 examined patients (93.61%). D dimer is highly sensitive diagnostic tool that should be routinely used in the patients with suspected deep vein thrombosis of leg.

RESUMEN

The paper deals with structure, importance and advantage as well as the path of development of the Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals (Vancouver style) from 1978, when they were established and firstly published, through changes and amendments up to their last--fourth edition. Authorship, abstract, key words and literature citation are fields dealt with in detail with appropriate discussions. The 16 year long existence of the Vancouver style, a great number of journals with high impact factor which conform to its requirements, as well as its advantages presented in the paper, should be a sufficient reason for scientists, explorers and editors of biomedical journals to conform to the requirements if they have not conformed to them yet.

RESUMEN

The transformation of the Library at the Medical Faculty of Novi Sad into a modern information center necessitated the introduction of an up-to-date technology and enforced the use of the latest information sources among which MEDLINE medical database is the most famous one. In the studied period, January 1993-current, 200 searches have been performed on the basis of which the following parameters were analyzed: institution, occupation, and degree of the user, purpose and accuracy of the order, relevant period, number and format of the references, assessment of the search quality and the quality of the library staff services. The analysis proved the initial belief that MEDLINE is a remarkably valuable data base necessary for medical libraries.

RESUMEN

The paper reviews results of a research on literature cited in papers published in two most remarkable Yugoslav biomedical journals, Medicinski Pregled and Srpski arhiv za celokupno lekarstvo, in 1985 and 1992. The analysis included the following parameters: the amount of published papers, the quantity of cites out of the literature that has been used, frequency of citation of foreign and domestic literature as well as the quantity of self citations. According to the gathered results, foreign literature is remarkably more often cited than the domestic references, mostly in English, but the percentage of citing one's own papers is also high.

RESUMEN

In regard to more frequent incidence of tuberculosis in our population, when difficulties in pharyngeal area exist, it is necessary to think about eventual tuberculosis etiology in the differentiative diagnosis of retropharyngeal abscess.
