RESUMEN

Myopia is regarded as a worldwide epidemic ocular disease, has been proved related to inflammation. CD55, also known as decay-accelerating factor (DAF) can modulate the activation of complement through inhibiting the formation of complement 3 convertase and its dysregulation is involved in various inflammatory diseases. To investigate the association between CD55 and myopia, and to test whether CD55 can inhibit myopia development by suppressing inflammation in the eye, we use three different animal models including monocular form-deprivation myopia, myopia induced by TNF-α administration and allergic conjunctivitis animal model to reveal the CD55 in myopia development. The tears of thirty-eight participants with different spherical equivalents were collected and CD55 in the tears were also analyzed. Complement 3 and complement 5 levels increased while CD55 levels decreased in allergic conjunctivitis and myopic eyes. After anti-inflammatory drugs administration, CD55 expression was increased in monocular form-deprivation myopia model. We also found inflammatory cytokines TGF-ß, IL-6, TNF-α, and IL-1ß may enhance complement 3 and complement 5 activation while CD55 level was suppressed contrary. Moreover, lower CD55 levels were found in the tears of patients with myopia with decreased diopter values. Finally, CD55-Fc administration on the eyelids can inhibit the elongation of axial length and change of refractive error. CD55-Fc application also suppress myopia development subsequent to complement 3 and complement 5 reduction and can lower myopia-specific (MMP-2 and TGF-ß) cytokine expression in TNF-α induced myopia animal model. This suggests that CD55 can inhibit myopia development by suppression of complement activation and eventual down-regulation of inflammation.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the relationship between pretreatment inflammatory and nutritional biomarkers in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) undergoing neoadjuvant chemotherapy and radiation therapy (nCRT). SAMPLE & SETTING: 213 patients with newly diagnosed stage II-III ESCC who received nCRT at an academic hospital in Taiwan. METHODS & VARIABLES: Electronic health record data were used. Records on inflammatory and nutritional biomarkers and clinical outcomes were extracted. Logistic regression analysis was used to predict treatment-related adverse events, Cox regression was used for survival outcomes, and receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was used to determine optimal cutoff values. RESULTS: There was a significant association between low prognostic nutritional index (PNI) and nCRT toxicities and survival. Advanced cancer stage, high platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio, and occurrence of pneumonia/infection were linked to survival outcomes. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING: PNI shows promise in predicting prognosis, helps identify high-risk patients, and enables nurses to apply tailored interventions.

Myopia is widely recognized as an epidemic. Studies have found a link between Transforming Growth Factor-beta (TGF-ß) and myopia, but the specific molecular mechanisms are not fully understood. In this study, a monocular model in tree shrews (Tupaia belangeri) was established to verify the molecular mechanism of TGF-ß in myopia. The results indicated that there were significant changes in TGF-ßs during the treatment of myopia, which could enhance the refractive ability and axial length of the eye. Immunohistochemical staining, real-time fluorescent quantitative PCR, and immunoblotting results showed a significant upregulation of MMP2 and NF-κB levels, and a significant downregulation of COL-I expression in the TGF-ß treated eyes, suggesting that NF-κB and MMP2 are involved in the signaling pathways of TGF-ßs induced myopia and axial elongation. Moreover, the expression levels of IL-6, IL-8, MCP-1, IL-1ß, TNF-α, TAK1, and NF-κB in the retina were all significantly elevated. This indicates that TGF-ß stimulates the inflammatory response of retinal pigment epithelial cells through the TAK1-NF-κB signaling pathway. In conclusion, this study suggests that TGF-ß promotes the progression of myopia by enhancing intraocular inflammation.

PURPOSE: To compare the efficacy of brolucizumab, half-dose PDT, and aflibercept in treating chronic central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC). METHODS: A retrospective cohort study with chronic CSC patients who underwent intravitreal injection of one shot of brolucizumab or aflibercept in the first 3 months, followed by pro re nata regimens or a single session of half-dose PDT, was retrospectively reviewed. The primary outcome measure was the proportion of eyes that achieved complete absorption of retinal fluid without requiring any rescue treatment. Secondary outcomes included changes in best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central retinal thickness (CRT), and central choroidal thickness (CCT). RESULTS: A total of 54 consecutive patients were included in this study with 18 patients in each group. At months 1 and 2, the brolucizumab group exhibited the highest rate of complete retinal fluid resolution (61% and 77%), followed by the half-dose PDT group (56% and 72%), and lowest in the aflibercept group (28% and 33%), with statistically significant differences noted at month 2 (P = 0.012). The brolucizumab group also demonstrated the most significant reduction in CCT at months 1 and 2 among the three groups (P = 0.007 and 0.001). Recurrence of retinal fluid in the brolucizumab groups was predominantly observed at month 3. Conversely, the half-dose PDT group exhibited the most favorable anatomical results starting from month 3. Notably, mild vitritis was observed in one case from the brolucizumab group. CONCLUSIONS: Single injection of brolucizumab demonstrates trends of faster regression of persistent residual retinal fluid, greater CCT and CRT decline, and matched BCVA compared to half-dose PDT in the short term.

To reduce the impact of communicable diseases like COVID-19, collective action is required and likely to be susceptible to normative influence as well as whether people are more or less collectively oriented. We extend the theory of normative social behavior (TNSB) to account for group orientation and predict the relationships between social norms and physical distancing behaviors. Using a rolling cross-sectional design during 17 weeks of the pandemic, a national sample of US residents from 20 states (N = 8,778) participated in the study. The findings show that perceived descriptive norms, injunctive norms, and group orientation are significantly associated with physical distancing. The descriptive norm-behavior relationship and injunctive norm-behavior relationship are moderated by group orientation and the other predicted moderators in the TNSB. The findings extend the TNSB and highlight the need to understand social norms and group orientation in formative research for health communication campaigns designed to promote prevention behaviors.

Few population-based studies have looked at the risk of uveitis among syphilis patients. Our study addresses the knowledge gap by reporting on uveitis risk in syphilis patients through a retrospective cohort study. The Taiwan National Health Insurance database was used for this study, covering the period from January 1st, 2009, to December 31st, 2020. We created a 1:4 propensity score matched cohort between the syphilis patients and controls, which accounted for gender, age, and comorbidities. The primary endpoint was the incidence of newly recorded uveitis. The assessment of uveitis risk in syphilis patients included the use of the Kaplan-Meier method and multivariate Cox proportional hazard model. A total of 31,597 syphilis patients and 126,379 matched comparisons were recruited. The uveitis incidence rate from our syphilis patients was 1.25 per 1000 person-years. The uveitis incidence rate from our non-syphilis group was 0.8 per 1000 person-years. After matching, the syphilis group was found to have a higher risk of developing uveitis (adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) [95% CI]: 1.57 [1.36-1.81], P < .001). Among males and individuals aged 20-34 years, subgroup analysis showed an increased risk of uveitis in the presence of syphilis infection. The Kaplan-Meier survival curve showed a significant difference in uveitis incidence between syphilis and non-syphilis groups (log-rank test P < .001). In summary, our study revealed that Taiwanese syphilis patients were at a higher risk of developing uveitis. These results highlight the need for regular ocular monitoring and screening in individuals with syphilis.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of nursing managers in implementing palliative care in long-term care facilities and to provide recommendations for managers who plan to introduce palliative care into their facilities. Methods: This study used semi-structured interviews and grounded theory methodology, with purposive sampling. A total of 11 long-term care facilities in eastern Taiwan that had implemented palliative care were selected, and 11 facility nursing managers participated in in-depth, face-to-face interviews. Results: The introduction of palliative care in long-term care facilities can be divided into four stages: (1) the opportunity for change, (2) playing a supportive role, (3) a new collaboration model, and (4) facility transformation. The core category shared by the participants may be summed up as "the palliative care captain in the facility". It reflects the spirit of the successful implementation of palliative care by managers in long-term care facilities. Conclusion: The study reveals that during the initial phases of implementing palliative care, the palliative care teams assume a crucial leadership role, while the facilities play a supportive role. At this stage, managers should focus on personnel training and addressing internal issues within the facilities to facilitate successful collaboration with the palliative care teams. In the later stages, the facilities transition from a supportive role to one of independence, marking a critical juncture for the facilities' potential stable development. During this period, managers are tasked not only with establishing the facilities' own palliative care team but also with facilitating the transformation of staff from learners to instructors. Finally, even after successful implementation, managers must contemplate how to innovate and set more ambitious goals.

PURPOSE: To investigate whether patients with central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) have increased risk of developing glaucoma. METHODS: Patients diagnosed with CSC between 1 January 2008 and 31 December 2018 were included in this study using data from the Taiwanese National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD). The CSC cohort was matched with a non-CSC cohort using the propensity score matching method, based on sex, age (in 10-year intervals), index date year, comorbidities, and steroid use, resulting in equal numbers of patients in both cohorts. Patients were followed up until 31 December 2019 or until they were withdrawn from the NHIRD. The incidence of glaucoma was compared between the two cohorts using the Cox regression model, and the risk of developing glaucoma was estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method. RESULTS: After adjusting for sex, age, comorbidities, and steroid use, the CSC cohort showed a significantly higher risk of developing glaucoma compared to those without CSC (adjusted HR = 3.99; 95% CI = 3.44-4.62). The cumulative incidence of glaucoma in the CSC cohort was also significantly higher than in the non-CSC cohort (log-rank test, p < 0.001). Among the glaucoma subtypes, normal tension glaucoma had the highest risk (adjusted HR = 5.79; 95% CI = 3.41-9.85), followed by primary open-angle glaucoma (adjusted HR = 2.77; 95% CI = 2.12-3.62). CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, our study shows that CSC patients are at a higher risk of developing glaucoma, especially NTG. Awareness and regular glaucoma screenings are essential for patients with CSC.

Choroidal ruptures occur in 5% to 10% closed-globe injuries with wide variation in visual prognosis, which depending on the visual acuity at presentation, the location of the rupture, and other associated ocular injuries. We reported a case of bilateral traumatic choroidal rupture with a large macular hole. We performed surgery in the right eye of microincisional vitrectomy, temporally inverted internal limiting membrane (ILM) flap, and C3F8 tamponade; then microincisional vitrectomy, fibrotic scar removal, double inverted ILM flap, and C3F8 tamponade in the left eye. After surgery, she achieved both good anatomical and visual acuity improvement in the right eye, but limited visual acuity improvement in the left eye due to subfoveal choroidal scar formation.

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus and uveitis have shared commonality in pathophysiology in terms of autoimmunity. However, no studies that have linked any association between the conditions of tinnitus and uveitis. METHODS: This is a retrospective study conducted from the Taiwan National Health Insurance database in order to investigate whether tinnitus patients are at increased risk of uveitis. Patients newly diagnosed with tinnitus between 2001 and 2014 were recruited and followed up until 2018. The endpoint of interest was a diagnosis of uveitis. RESULTS: A total of 31,034 tinnitus patients and 124,136 matched comparisons were analyzed. Tinnitus patients were found to have a significantly higher cumulative incidence for uveitis than those without the diagnosis of tinnitus with incidence rate of 1.68 (95% CI 1.55-1.82) per 10 000 person-months for tinnitus group and 1.48 (95% CI 1.42-1.54) per 10 000 person-months for non-tinnitus group. CONCLUSION: Tinnitus patients were found to have increased risk of developing uveitis.

Objective: This prospective longitudinal study aimed to investigate changes in sarcopenia, physical activity, and inflammation biomarkers in patients with oral cavity cancer during curative treatment and explore their association with treatment outcomes. Methods: Patients newly diagnosed with oral cavity cancer who underwent primary surgery with (chemo)radiation therapy were included. Along with physical activity and inflammatory markers, sarcopenia was assessed using a 5-time chair stand test, hand grip strength, and skeletal muscle index (SMI). Data were collected before operation and after 3 months (T2) and 6 months after operation. Logistic regression and Cox proportional hazards models were used to identify predictors of treatment outcomes. Results: Out of 56 patients, 21 (37.5%) had sarcopenia. SMI score, physical activity, and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) showed significant changes after surgery, with exacerbation at T2. Patients with sarcopenia exhibited a significant decrease in SMI scores at T2. Advanced cancer stage and sarcopenia were associated with treatment-related dysphagia (odds ratio [OR] â€‹= â€‹3.01, P â€‹= â€‹0.034; OR â€‹= â€‹7.62, P â€‹= â€‹0.018). Sarcopenia (OR â€‹= â€‹3.02, P â€‹= â€‹0.002) and NLR (OR â€‹= â€‹5.38, P â€‹< â€‹0.001) were significantly associated with infections. Pretreatment SMI independently predicted poor survival outcomes (hazard ratio â€‹= â€‹7.00, P â€‹= â€‹0.005). Conclusions: Identifying patients with oral cavity cancer, sarcopenia, and high NLR levels can ensure prompt education and vigilant monitoring, potentially improving treatment outcomes and patient well-being during curative treatment.

The Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has had an unprecedented impact on health-care education. However, the relationship between changes in nursing internships in Taiwan during the COVID-19 pandemic and outcome in the national registered nurse (RN) licensure exam for new nursing graduates is underexplored. The study was to explore the predictors of first-attempt success in the RN licensure exam in 2022. A retrospective review of secondary data was employed in this study. Adjusted binary logistic regression was used to analyze data. A convenience sample of 78 new graduates attempted the exam. Of these graduates, 87.2% passed the RN licensure exam. Age was the main predictor of exam success, followed by grand mean academic score and total alternative (nontraditional in-person) internship hours. Compared with those who failed the exam, the graduates who passed the exam were significantly more likely to be younger, have better academic performance, and have engaged in more alternative internship hours. Nursing faculties should consider implementing supportive strategies early for students who are underperforming or those who are older than their classmates on average to help them pass the RN exam on the first attempt. The optimal duration and long-term consequences of alternative nursing internships must be analyzed in further detail.

Hydrogels exhibit excellent moldability, biodegradability, biocompatibility, and extracellular matrix-like properties, which make them widely used in biomedical fields. Because of their unique three-dimensional crosslinked hydrophilic networks, hydrogels can encapsulate various materials, such as small molecules, polymers, and particles; this has become a hot research topic in the antibacterial field. The surface modification of biomaterials by using antibacterial hydrogels as coatings contributes to the biomaterial activity and offers wide prospects for development. A variety of surface chemical strategies have been developed to bind hydrogels to the substrate surface stably. We first introduce the preparation method for antibacterial coatings in this review, which includes surface-initiated graft crosslinking polymerization, anchoring the hydrogel coating to the substrate surface, and the LbL self-assembly technique to coat crosslinked hydrogels. Then, we summarize the applications of hydrogel coating in the biomedical antibacterial field. Hydrogel itself has certain antibacterial properties, but the antibacterial effect is not sufficient. In recent research, in order to optimize its antibacterial performance, the following three antibacterial strategies are mainly adopted: bacterial repellent and inhibition, contact surface killing of bacteria, and release of antibacterial agents. We systematically introduce the antibacterial mechanism of each strategy. The review aims to provide reference for the further development and application of hydrogel coatings.

BACKGROUND: Dopamine has been suggested to be a stop signal for eye growth and affects the development of myopia. Acupuncture is known to increase dopamine secretion and is widely used to treat myopia clinically. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine if acupuncture inhibits myopia progression in form deprived Syrian hamsters by inducing rises in dopamine content that in turn suppress inflammasome activation. METHODS: Acupuncture was applied at LI4 and Taiyang every other day for 21 days. The levels of molecules associated with the dopamine signaling pathway, inflammatory signaling pathway and inflammasome activation were determined. A dopamine agonist (apomorphine) was used to evaluate if activation of the dopaminergic signaling pathway suppresses myopia progression by inhibiting inflammasome activation in primary retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells. A dopamine receptor 1 (D1R) inhibitor (SCH39166) was also administered to the hamsters. RESULTS: Acupuncture inhibited myopia development by increasing dopamine levels and activating the D1R signaling pathway. Furthermore, we also demonstrated that nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain (NOD)-, leucine-rich repeat (LRR)- and pyrin domain-containing protein 3 (NLR) family pyrin domain-containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome activation was inhibited by activation of the D1R signaling pathway. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that acupuncture inhibits myopia development by suppressing inflammation, which is initiated by activation of the dopamine-D1R signaling pathway.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Postoperative adverse events are associated with poor clinical outcomes and survival in patients with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treated with curative operation. However, comprehensive evaluation of the clinical characteristics associated with postoperative adverse events and survival outcomes is lacking. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective study that evaluated patients with NSCLC who underwent curative surgery between 2008 and 2019 was conducted in a medical center. The baseline characteristics, five-item modified frailty index, sarcopenia, inflammatory biomarkers, surgical approach, postoperative adverse events, and survival were statistically analyzed. RESULTS: Patients with a history of smoking and preoperative sarcopenia were at a higher risk of developing postoperative pulmonary complications. Smoking, frailty, and traditional open thoracotomy (OT) were associated with infections, and sarcopenia was identified as a risk factor for major complications. Advanced tumor stage, high neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, OT, major complications, and infections were identified as risk factors for overall and disease-free survival. CONCLUSION: Pre-treatment sarcopenia was found to be a predictor of major complications. Infections and major complications were associated with survival outcomes in patients with NSCLC.

BACKGROUND: Poly-D, L-lactic acid is (PDLLA) a new cosmetic filler. We reported the first case of PDLLA-related devastating complication of multiple branch retinal artery occlusion (BRAO). CASE PRESENTATION: A 23-year-old female had sudden blindness after injection of PDLLA at the glabella. After emergency intraocular pressure-lowering medicine, ocular massage, steroid pulse therapy, heparin and alprostadil infusion, and subsequent treatments including acupuncture and 40 sessions of hyperbaric oxygen therapy, her best-corrected visual acuity improved from hand motion at 30 cm to 0.3 within 2 months. CONCLUSION: Although safety of PDLLA was evaluated in animal studies and in 16,000 human cases, it could still cause rare but devastating retinal artery occlusion as in the present case. Proper and immediate therapies could still improve patient's vision and scotoma. Surgeons should keep in mind the possibility of iatrogenic filler-related retinal artery occlusion.

Background and Objectives: The identification of possible biomarkers that can predict treatment response among DME eyes is important for the individualization of treatment plans. We investigated optical coherence tomography (OCT)-based biomarkers that may predict the one-year real-life outcomes among diabetic macular edema (DME) eyes following treatment by intravitreal ranibizumab (IVR) injections. Materials and Methods: A total of 65 eyes from 35 treatment-naïve patients with DME treated with ranibizumab injection were recruited. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central retinal thickness (CRT), intraocular pressure (IOP), and OCT scans were retrospectively recorded at baseline before treatment and at 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months after treatment. The OCT scans were evaluated for biomarkers of interest, which included central retinal thickness (CRT), amount and locations of hyperreflective foci (HRF), subretinal fluid (SRF), intraretinal cysts (IRC), large outer nuclear layer cyst (LONLC), ellipsoid zone disruption (EZD), disorganization of retinal inner layers (DRIL), hard exudates (HE), epiretinal membrane (ERM), and vitreomacular interface (VMI). Correlations between these OCT biomarkers and outcome measures (visual and structural) were statistically analyzed. Results: A total of 65 eyes from 35 patients with DME were enrolled. The mean age was 64.2 ± 10.9 years old. Significant improvement in terms of mean BCVA (p < 0.005) and mean CRT was seen at final follow-up compared to baseline. The biomarkers of DRIL, LONLC, and SRF were found to be predictive for at least 50 µm CRT reduction after treatment (with odds ratio of 8.69, 8.5, and 17.58, respectively). The biomarkers of IRC, LONLC, and SRF were predictive for significant improvement in terms of BCVA and CRT after treatment. Finally, the number of HRF was predictive for both BCVA improvement and a CRT reduction of less than 100 µm after treatment. No serious complications were reported during the study. Conclusion: Our study demonstrated the utility of OCT biomarkers as therapeutic predictors of ranibizumab treatment among DME eyes.

Purpose: To determine the risk of ptosis among diabetic retinopathy (DR) patients. Methods: This is a population-based, retrospective, matched-cohort study where DR patients were recruited from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) to investigate the risk of developing ptosis. Preexisting co-factors of interest included smoking status and medical comorbidities of hyperlipidemia and hypertension. Statistical analysis was performed using T-test, Cox-proportional hazard ratios adjusted for comorbidities (aHR), Wilcoxon rank sum test, Kaplan-Meier estimators, and log rank tests. Results: Follow-up data of 9,494 patients with DR and 37,976 matched control cohort (non-DR) from 2000 to 2012 were analyzed. DR patients were found to have significantly increased risk of developing ptosis (adjusted hazard ratio (HR) [95% CI]: 2.76 [1.74-4.38], p < 0.001) when compared to the control cohort. From analysis in different strata, adult age and non-smokers were shown to have higher risk for ptosis development among DR patients. Furthermore, DR patients was also found to have increased risk of developing ptosis when compared to matched controls, regardless of whether they had medical comorbidities of lipid metabolism disorders or hypertension. Conclusions: In this large-scale study using real-world data, our results showed that DR patients were found to have increased risk of developing ptosis. Female gender, adult age, and non-smokers were also shown to increase the risk of ptosis among DR patients. This has implications towards the care of diabetic patients, complications such as ptosis should be properly screened for when encountering such patients. Before ptosis surgery, the possibility of underlying diabetes or DR should be also scrutinized and treated properly to avoid undesirable postoperative dissension.

Background and objectives: To report the initial response to a single intravitreal brolucizumab (IVI-B) injection in wet age-related macular degeneration (wAMD) or polypoidal choroidopathy (PCV) complicated with either persistent subretinal fluid (SRF) or pigment epithelial detachment refractory to previous anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) therapy. Material and methods: In this retrospective study, all eyes received a single IVI-B (6 mg/0.05 mL) for wAMD or PCV with treatment-resistant SRF or PED. Outcome measures included assessment in central retinal thickness (CRT), visual acuity, and evaluation for changes in the SRF or PED on OCT. Follow-up was prior to the first brolucizumab injection, then at 1 week and 5 weeks afterwards. Results: In total, 10 eyes of 10 patients (6 women [60%]) were enrolled. Five patients had wAMD and five patients had PCV. Average age of participants was 67.6 years. All patients received one IVI-B. All patients were not treatment-naïve to anti-VEGF agents. At the first week and fifth week following the first IVI-B, seven out of seven patients (100%) had resolved SRF. However, seven out of nine patients (78%) had no improvement of their PED at 5 weeks follow-up. Mean PED height and width before the first IVI-B was 339.77 µm and 2233.44 µm, respectively. Mean PED height and width at the fifthweek following the first IVI-B was 328.125 µm and 2129.5 µm, respectively. Overall mean visual acuity before the first IVI-B was 0.224; and 5 weeks following the first IVI-B was 0.38. Conclusions: Treatment with brolucizumab resulted in anatomical improvement for all patients with persistent SRF. Limited efficacy was seen for persistent PED. Brolucizumab appears to be a safe and effective option for treatment-resistant SRF. Future multicenter collaborative studies are warranted.

In this study, we aimed to investigate whether chronic retinal inflammation is involved in the pathogenesis of form-deprivation myopia (FDM) using tree shrews as an animal model. Twenty-one tree shrews were randomly divided into 7-day/14-day FDM (FDM7/FDM14) groups and their corresponding 7-day/14-day control groups. Refraction and axial length were measured. To determine the effects of form deprivation on inflammation, we used real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and immunohistochemistry to assess the expression levels of several proinflammatory cytokines. At day 0, the eyes in the FDM and control groups were hyperopic. However, after 7 and 14 days of form deprivation, the refractive error of the eyes in the FDM7 and FDM14 groups shifted from +6.6 ± 0.3 diopters (D) to +4.0 ± 0.5 D and from +6.4 ± 0.3 D to +5.0 ± 0.3 D, respectively. The levels of tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1, and nuclear factor κB were increased in the FDM eyes, compared with those in the control eyes. The increase in matrix metalloproteinase-2 expression was greater in the FDM eyes than in the contralateral and control eyes, whereas collagen type I expression was downregulated. In conclusion, chronic inflammation may play a crucial pathogenic role in form-deprivation myopia in tree shrews.
