BACKGROUND: Birt-Hogg-Dube syndrome (BHDS) is an autosomal dominant syndrome with different skin, lung, and renal manifestations. It is diagnosed commonly in the third decade of life, and patients have an increased risk for pneumothorax and renal carcinomas. METHODS: Articles published in PubMed, and Medline from 1977 to September 2023, were included in the systematic review. Inclusion criteria were applied to case reports, case series, and a retrospective cohort study, describing clinical, histopathological, and genetic findings in patients with BHDS with oral and/or parotid lesions. RESULTS: Sixteen families/individuals with BHDS were identified for analysis. Patients ranged in age from 20 to 74 years, with an average of 49.4 years. Males were affected 52.2% of the time and females, 39.1%. Skin fibrofolliculomas were reported in 87% of cases, and oral lesions were documented in 47.8%. Parotid tumors were documented in 43.5% of patients, 30.4% of which were oncocytomas, 4.3% bilateral oncocytomas, and 4.3% "oncocytic carcinoma". CONCLUSIONS: Because BHDS is uncommon, its spectrum of clinical manifestations may be underrecognized, especially as the disease is mostly reported at advanced stage. And some of the patients with BHDS may have oncocytic parotid tumors and oral lesions. In this regard, patients presenting these lesions and other indications of BHDS should be considered for renal screening.

BACKGROUND: The glandular odontogenic cyst (GOC) is a benign developmental cyst of the jaws that is characterized by a high recurrence rate. METHODS: A systematic review is presented of reported cases, case series, and retrospective studies of recurrent cases of glandular odontogenic cysts, to determine the overall and detailed demographic features with documentation of the specific histologic features of the initial presentation of each cyst. Searches of detailed databases were carried out to identify articles published in the English language from 1988 to 2023. The variables were demographics, patient symptoms, cyst location, radiographic features, histopathological findings, type of treatment, and minimum eight months of follow-up. RESULTS: Eighteen cases were identified: with an equal gender presentation of 50% females and 50% males. The average age was 44.7. The mean size was 3.5 cm. The most common location was in the anterior mandible in 50% (n = 9) of cases, followed by the posterior mandible 27.8% (n = 5). Most patients were asymptomatic 55.6% (n = 10). The most common histologic features at first diagnosis were mucous cells in 88.9% (n = 16), variable thickness with 83.3% (n = 15), eosinophilic cuboidal cells 88.9% (n = 16), microcysts 83.3% (n = 15), and clear cells 77.8% (n = 14) cases. CONCLUSION: GOC has an aggressive behavior. Evidence was not conclusive to link any single or combination of histologic features to recurrence, and the strongest correlation for recurrence was the type of treatment. Since this is an uncommon cyst, more cases are needed. Follow-up should continue for at least five years, because recurrences were higher between years 3 and 5.

Objective: This systematic review aims to describe the clinical outcomes after TMJ arthroscopy followed by intra articular infiltration with different substances. Materials and Methods: A literature search was carried out, the variables were Arthroscopy with different substances, pain and maximal mouth opening. The inclusion criteria were articles that reported infiltration of different substances after arthroscopy. Case series, observational studies, and randomized clinical trials were included. Exclusion criteria were studies that included arthrocentesis, animal studies, connective tissue disease, patients with previous surgeries. Results: Of the 5 studies finally included, the population studied were 346 subjects, of which 315 were female. The mean age was 34.7 (16-77). Regarding diagnoses, Wilkes III and Wilkes IV were taken into account. The most commonly used substance was sodium hyaluronate/hyaluronic acid in 4 of the 5 studies. Conclusion: Multiple substances have been infiltrated within the temporomandibular joint, with sodium hyaluronate/hyaluronic acid being the most studied. However, the benefit of substances like ATM artroscopia adyuvantes has not been clearly established. It is recommended in future studies that the substances and results be evaluated in the same way to obtain more homogeneous studies.

BACKGROUND: The intraosseous schwannoma (IS) is a benign peripheral nerve sheath tumor postulated to arise de novo or from nerve fibers in preexisting nutrient canals. ISs are uncommon and comprise less than 1% of neoplasms originating in bone. We herein present two cases of mandibular schwannomas-the first case was a 66-year-old female with a four-month history of pain and pressure associated with an anterior mandibular radiolucency, and the second case was an asymptomatic 12-year-old female with separate radiolucencies of her mandibular symphysis and right posterior mandible. Incisional biopsies of all three lesions showed a benign spindle cell neoplasm with histologic features of a schwannoma; the tumor cells were strongly reactive for S-100. The patients underwent complete enucleation of their lesions and are without evidence of disease at ten months and five years, respectively. METHODS: A systematic review was undertaken to evaluate the diagnostic features, treatment, and patient outcomes of gnathic schwannomas. RESULTS: A total of 93 cases were identified with the following demographic findings: predominance in females (57%); average age of occurrence of 37.3 years (8 to 77 years); mean size of 3.6 cm; and involvement of the mandibular body (37.6%), mandibular body and ramus (18.3%), and anterior mandible (18.3%). The predominant clinical sign was swelling (69.9%), and the most common radiographic presentation was a radiolucency (94.6%) with well-defined borders (72%). CONCLUSION: All cases were treated surgically, with an average follow-up interval of 22.9 months and a recurrence rate of 5.4.

The in vitro antiproliferative activity of a phenolic-rich extract from Lycium barbarum fruits against head and neck HPV16 squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) has been demonstrated, indicating for the first time that L. barbarum extract inhibits human papillomavirus (HPV) type 16 cell lines. Ethanol extract of L. barbarum was used for cell viability evaluation on SCC090, CAL27, and HGnF cell lines. After 24 and 48 h, the cell cycle effect of L. barbarum extract (at 1.0, 10, and 100 µg/mL) was measured via flow cytometry. In addition, the mRNA expression on E6/E7 and p53 via RT-PCR and the expression of p16, p53, Ki-67, and Bcl-2 via immunohistochemistry were also determined. Untreated cells, 20 µM cisplatin, and a Camellia sinensis-derived extract were used as negative and positive controls, respectively. We demonstrated that the studied L. barbarum extract resulted in G0/G1 arrest and S phase accumulation in SCC090 at 1.0 and 10 µg/mL. A reduction in mRNA levels of E6/E7 oncogenes (p < 0.05) with p53 overexpression was also observed through PCR, while immunohistochemical analyses indicated p16 overexpression (p > 0.05) and a decrease in p53 overexpression. The observed effects were associated with anticancer and immunomodulatory phenolics, such as flavonols/flavan-3-ols and tyramine-conjugated hydroxycinnamic acid amides, identified in the studied extract. These findings revealed that the phenolic-rich extract of L. barbarum fruits has promising properties to be considered further for developing new therapies against oral and oropharyngeal HPV lesions.

BACKGROUND: Vesiculobullous and macular lesions in the oral mucosa have been reported in patients positive for SARS-CoV-2 infection. Nonetheless, the significance and physiopathology of oral manifestations have not been clearly established in the clinical progression or outcome of the infection. AIM: To describe the clinico-pathological oral mucosal lesions in four patients with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection. METHODS AND RESULTS: Four patients with COVID-19 disease and confirmed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) presented angina bullosa hemorragica-like lesion, vascular disorder, and nonspecific stomatitis, one patient with histological analysis demonstrated perivascular reactive lymphocitic infliltrate, focal capillary thrombosis, and hemorrhage. According to the discrimination of other local and systemic conditions and the synchronous onset of oral and systemic symptoms, the diagnosis of oral lesions probably associated with COVID-19 was established. CONCLUSION: Infection with SARS-CoV-2 may result in oral manifestations with various clinical presentations, which presumably support the hypothesis of thrombi formation and vasculitis; nevertheless, these findings need more evidence and a long-term follow up of patients to accurately establish the significance of the oral mucosa affection in the COVID-19 disease.
