RESUMEN

The aetiology of breast cancer remains elusive, but over recent years cytogeneticists have made several important discoveries. Most notable among these has been the identification of specific genes involved in the carcinogenic process. Clinicians who deal with breast cancer often feel intimidated by this explosion of genetic information. This article introduces the relevant ideas of molecular biology as they apply to the present state of understanding of breast cancer and its possible aetiology.

RESUMEN

This article elucidates the clinical and pathological features of both ductal and lobular in-situ breast carcinoma. It quantifies the risk of invasive disease developing and outlines different treatment options with results as presently known.

RESUMEN

Breast cancer has been reported to be associated with the Ss blood group system and specifically the ss blood genotype. This report was not substantiated by further work which concluded that the difference between the two studies may have been due to different aetiological factors in the two groups of patients studied. Breast cancer has a familial element so we decided to study the Ss and MN blood groups in familial and sporadic breast cancer patients and normal women with a positive family history along with a control group. We observed an increased incidence of the SS blood genotype in familial, sporadic breast cancer patients and women at an increased risk of developing breast cancer compared with a control group.

RESUMEN

A relationship between breast and colonic cancer has been suggested so we looked at the incidence of colonic carcinoma in the relatives of familial and sporadic breast cancer patients. We found that there is an increased incidence of colonic cancer in the relatives of familial breast cancer patients as compared with the relatives of sporadic breast cancer patients. This risk was higher in men than women (P less than or equal to 0.05). The relatives of familial breast cancer patients are a high risk group for developing colonic carcinoma, and would benefit from colonic screening.

RESUMEN

Familial breast cancer is important because of all the known risk factors associated with developing the disease. The one with the most predictability is a positive family history. It is also important because a family history causes anxiety in the families concerned, and young women will often ask their chance of developing the disease. This form of breast cancer accounts for 10% of causes and has factors that distinguish it from the sporadic variety. Relatives of familial breast cancer patients are not only at an increased risk of developing the disease (if female) but also of developing other tumours especially colonic.

RESUMEN

An aortocaval fistula is an uncommon complication of an abdominal aortic aneurysm and occurs in approximately 1-3% of cases. Successful surgical intervention is dependent upon a preoperative diagnosis and subsequent modification of surgical technique. As abdominal aortic aneurysms increase in frequency so will the need to recognize this complication and treat it successfully.
