INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Tolloid like protein 1 (TLL1) rs17047200 has been reported to be associated with HCC development and liver fibrosis. However, to our knowledge, no studies have been performed on Latin Americans and comparative differences between TLL1 rs17047200 in HCC patients from Latin America and Europe are undefined. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cross-sectional analysis was performed on Latin American and European individuals. We analyzed TLL1 rs17047200 on DNA from 1194 individuals, including 420 patients with HCC (86.0 % cirrhotics) and 774 without HCC (65.9 % cirrhotics). RESULTS: TLL1 rs17047200 genotype AT/TT was not associated with HCC development in Latin Americans (OR: 0.699, 95 %CI 0.456-1.072, p = 0.101) or Europeans (OR: 0.736, 95 %CI 0.447-1.211, p = 0.228). TLL1 AT/TT was not correlated with fibrosis stages among metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) patients from Latin America (OR: 0.975, 95 %CI 0.496-1.918, p = 0.941). Among Europeans, alcohol-related HCC had lower TLL1 AT/TT frequencies than cirrhosis (18.3 % versus 42.3 %, OR: 0.273, 95 %CI 0.096-0.773, p = 0.015). CONCLUSIONS: We found no evidence that the TLL1 rs17047200 AT/TT genotype is a risk factor for HCC development in Latin Americans or Europeans. A larger study integrating ethnic and etiology backgrounds is needed to determine the importance of the TLL1 SNP in HCC development.

BACKGROUND: HCC is a major cause of cancer death worldwide. Serum biomarkers such as alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), protein induced by vitamin K absence-II, and the Gender, Age, AFP-L3, AFP, Des-gamma-carboxy prothrombin (GALAD) score have been recommended for HCC surveillance. However, inconsistent recommendations in international guidelines limit their clinical utility. METHODS: In this multicenter study, over 2000 patient samples were collected in 6 Latin American and 2 European countries. The performance of the GALAD score was validated in cirrhotic cases, and optimized versions were tested for early-stage HCC and prediagnostic HCC detection. RESULTS: The GALAD score could distinguish between HCC and cirrhosis in Latin American patients with an AUC of 0.76, sensitivity of 70%, and specificity of 83% at the conventional cutoff value of -0.63. In a European cohort, GALAD had an AUC of 0.69, sensitivity of 66%, and specificity of 72%. Optimizing the score in the 2 large multicenter cohorts revealed that AFP-L3 contributed minimally to early-stage HCC detection. Thus, we developed a modified GALAD score without AFP-L3, the ASAP (age, sex, AFP, and protein induced by vitamin K absence-II), which showed promise for early-stage HCC detection upon validation. The ASAP score also identified patients with cirrhosis at high risk for advanced-stage HCC up to 15 months before diagnosis (p < 0.0001) and differentiated HCC from hemangiomas, with a specificity of 100% at 71% sensitivity. CONCLUSION: Our comprehensive analysis of large sample cohorts validates the GALAD score's utility in Latin American, Spanish, and Dutch patients for early-stage HCC detection. The optimized GALAD without AFP-L3, the ASAP score, is a good alternative and shows greater promise for HCC prediction.

BACKGROUND: The rs641738 C > T single-nucleotide polymorphism of MBOAT7 has been associated with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Latin Americans have high rates of HCC and NAFLD, but no assessment between MBOAT7 and HCC has been performed in this population. AIMS: We provide the first assessment of the impact of MBOAT7 on HCC risk in Latin Americans. METHODS: Patients were prospectively recruited into the ESCALON network, designed to collect samples from Latin American patients with HCC in 6 South American countries (Argentina, Ecuador, Brazil, Chile, Peru, and Colombia). A European cohort and the general Hispanic population of gnomAD database were included for comparison. Associations between HCC and MBOAT7 were evaluated using logistic regression. RESULTS: In total, 310 cases of HCC and 493 cases of cirrhosis without HCC were assessed. The MBOAT7 TT genotype was not predictive of HCC in Latin Americans (TT vs CC OR adjusted = 1.15, 95% CI 0.66-2.01, p = 0.610) or Europeans (TT vs CC OR adjusted = 1.20, 95% CI 0.59-2.43, p = 0.621). No significant association was noted on subgroup analysis for NAFLD, viral hepatitis, or alcohol-related liver disease. The TT genotype was increased in the NAFLD-cirrhosis cohort of Latin Americans compared to a non-cirrhotic NAFLD cohort (TT vs CC + CT OR = 2.75, 95% CI 1.10-6.87, p = 0.031). CONCLUSION: The rs631738 C > T allele of MBOAT7 was not associated with increased risk of HCC in Latin Americans or Europeans. An increase in the risk of cirrhosis was noted with the TT genotype in Latin Americans with NAFLD.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the third leading cause of cancer death worldwide. The STAT4 rs7574865 genetic variant has been associated with an increased risk of developing HCC in Asian populations. However, this association has not been studied in Latin America and is poorly assessed in European populations. This case-control study investigated the association between STAT4 rs7574865 and HCC risk in these populations. We evaluated DNA samples from seven medical institutions across six Latin American countries and one Dutch institution in 1060 individuals (344 HCC and 716 controls). STAT4 rs7574865 SNP was genotyped using TaqMan-genotyping assay and analyzed using logistic regression. We found no significant association between the homozygous risk allele (G) of STAT4 and HCC development in either population, with odds ratios (OR) for GG versus TT of 0.85 (CI: 0.48-1.52, p = 0.58) and 0.81 (CI: 0.34-1.93, p = 0.67) for Latin Americans and Europeans respectively. No correlation was found between the risk allele and HCC based on underlying liver disease. However, we found that Latin Americans of European ancestry were more likely to carry the risk allele. Our results suggest that the STAT4 SNP rs7574865 does not influence the risk of developing HCC in Latin American or European populations, highlighting the importance of evaluating genetic risk factors in various ethnic groups and understanding the possible influence of ancestry on the genetic basis of disease.

BACKGROUND: The burden of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in South America is among the highest in the world. However, the epidemiology and risk factors for NAFLD are insufficiently described in the region. AIM: To explore the associations between clinical characteristics and histopathological features of NAFLD METHODS: This was a descriptive study of 2722 patients with NAFLD from 8 medical centres across 5 South American countries. We collected clinical, biochemical and histopathological data using a templated chart. Fibrosis was assessed by elastography or fibrosis scores and confirmed with biopsy when available. We examined associations between histopathological features and clinical characteristics with logistic regression models. Models were adjusted for country, age and sex. RESULTS: The median age was 53 years (IQR: 41-62), and 63% were women. Subjects from Brazil had the highest body mass index at 42 kg/m2 . Sixty-seven percent had dyslipidemia, 46% had obesity, 30% had hypertension, 17% had type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and 34% had metabolic syndrome. Biopsy reports were available for 948 (35%), of which 58% showed fibrosis, 91% steatosis and 65% inflammation; 25% showed significant fibrosis and 27% severe steatosis. Metabolic syndrome, T2DM and hypertension were significantly associated with significant fibrosis (OR = 1.94, p < 0.001; OR = 2.93, p < 0.001 and OR = 1.60, p = 0.003, respectively), severe steatosis (OR = 2.05, p < 0.001; OR = 1.91, p = 0.001 and OR = 2.17, p < 0.001, respectively) and liver inflammation (OR = 1.66, p = 0.007; OR = 2.00, p = 0.002; OR = 1.62, p = 0.001, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: In the largest NAFLD cohort study to date from South America, metabolic syndrome, hypertension and T2DM were independently associated with significant fibrosis, severe steatosis, and inflammation. The prevalence of T2DM was lower than the reported global prevalence.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Most epidemiological data on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) originate from resource-rich countries. We have previously described the epidemiology of HCC in South America through the South American Liver Research Network. Here, we provide an update on the changing epidemiology of HCC in the continent seven years since that report. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated all cases of HCC diagnosed between 2019 to 2021 in centers from six countries in South America. A templated, retrospective chart review of patient characteristics at the time of HCC diagnosis, including basic demographic, clinical and laboratory data, was completed. Diagnosis of HCC was made radiologically or histologically for all cases via institutional standards. RESULTS: Centers contributed to a total of 339 HCC cases. Peru accounted for 37% (n=125) of patients; Brazil 16% (n=57); Chile 15% (n=51); Colombia 14% (n=48); Argentina 9% (n=29); and Ecuador 9% (n=29). The median age at HCC diagnosis was 67 years (IQR 59-73) and 61% were male. The most common risk factor was nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD, 37%), followed by hepatitis C (17%), alcohol use disorder (11%) and hepatitis B (12%). The majority of HCCs occurred in the setting of cirrhosis (80%). HBV-related HCC occurred at a younger age compared to other causes, with a median age of 46 years (IQR 36-64). CONCLUSIONS: We report dramatic changes in the epidemiology of HCC in South America over the last decade, with a substantial increase in NAFLD-related HCC. HBV-related HCC still occurs at a much younger age when compared to other causes.

Background: The role of liver function tests (LFT) as prognostic factors in patients admitted with COVID-19 has not been fully investigated, particularly outside resource-rich countries. We aimed at evaluating the prognostic value of abnormal LFT on admission and during hospitalization of patients with COVID-19. Methods: We performed a retrospective study that included 298 adult patients hospitalized for COVID-19, between 05/2020 and 02/2021, in 6 hospitals from 5 countries in South America. We analyzed demographic and comorbid variables and laboratory tests on admission and during hospitalization. LFT over twice the upper limit of normal (ALEx2) were also evaluated in relation to a variety of factors on admission and during hospitalization. De novo-ALEx2 was defined as the presence of ALEx2 at one week of hospitalization in patients without ALEx2 on admission. Patients were followed until hospital discharge or death. Multivariable analysis was used to evaluate the association between ALEx2 on admission and during hospitalization and mortality. Results: Of the total of 298 patients, 60% were male, with a mean age of 60 years, and 74% of patients had at least one comorbidity. Of those, 137 (46%) patients were transferred to the intensive care unit and 66 (22.1%) patients died during hospitalization. ALEx2 on admission was present in 87 (29.2%) patients and was found to be independently associated with 1-week mortality (odds ratio (OR) = 3.55; 95% confidence interval (95%CI) 1.05-12.05). Moreover, 84 (39.8%) out of 211 patients without ALEx2 at admission developed de novo-ALEx2, which was independently associated with mortality during second week of hospitalization (OR = 6.09; 95%CI 1.28-29) and overall mortality (OR = 2.93, 95%CI 1.05-8.19). Conclusions: A moderate elevation of LFT during admission was associated with a poor short-term prognosis in patients hospitalized with COVID-19. In addition, moderate elevation of LFT at one week of hospitalization was an independent risk factor for overall mortality in these patients.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a leading cause of global cancer death. Major etiologies of HCC relate to chronic viral infections as well as metabolic conditions. The survival rate of people with HCC is very low and has been attributed to late diagnosis with limited treatment options. Combining ultrasound and the biomarker alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is currently one of the most widely used screening combinations for HCC. However, the clinical utility of AFP is controversial, and the frequency and operator-dependence of ultrasound lead to a variable degree of sensitivity and specificity across the globe. In this review, we summarize recent developments in the search for non-invasive serum biomarkers for early detection of HCC to improve prognosis and outcome for patients. We focus on tumor-associated protein markers, immune mediators (cytokines and chemokines), and micro-RNAs in serum or circulating extracellular vesicles and examine their potential for clinical application.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the leading causes of cancer-related death worldwide. Interestingly, the great majority of individuals affected by the tumor have underlying liver disease, therefore narrowing the population to be screened. Still, however, there is a clear lack of blood biomarkers, and surveillance in those at risk is performed by frequent imaging of the liver. A variety of multinational collaborations are currently invested in finding biomarkers for HCC based on liver-produced proteins. A new approach with assessment of peripheral proteins might be necessary for the successful early detection of this malignancy.

La palabra 'acalasia' es un neologismo de origen griego, acuñado por el médico inglés Sir Edwin Cooper en 1913, y significa: sin calidad de relajación. La acalasia es una enfermedad que se manifiesta clínicamente por disfagia para sólidos y para líquidos, regurgitación esofágica, dolor retroesternal, tos, broncoaspiración, neumonía, acidez estomacal y pérdida de peso. Su fisiopatología corresponde a la ausencia de peristalsis esofágica e insuficiente relajación del esfínter esofágico inferior. Estas anormalidades motoras se deben a la pérdida de las neuronas mientéricas que coordinan la peristalsis esofágica y la relajación del esfínter esofágico inferior. Fue descrita por primera vez por Sir Thomas Willis en 1674. Aunque actualmente se considera idiopática, se han comenzado a considerar como posibles causas las alteraciones autoinmunitarias y la predisposición genética; además, las infecciones por virus herpes y por virus herpes zóster se han implicado como causas probables. Su incidencia anual oscila entre 0,3 y 1,63 por 100.000 personas en adultos, con una prevalencia anual de 10 en 100.000 habitantes. Afecta por igual a los dos sexos, y el grupo etario más afectado es el de 30 a 60 años. El diagnóstico se sospecha por los síntomas que presenta el paciente, de los cuales la disfagia es el más importante. Se confirma por medio de la endoscopia de las vías digestivas altas, el esofagograma y la manometría de alta resolución. El tratamiento sigue siendo paliativo y se puede orientar por el subtipo de acalasia, según la clasificación de Chicago. Los mejores resultados se obtienen mediante las técnicas de dilatación neumática, miotomía laparoscópica de Heller y, más recientemente, mediante la miotomía endoscópica peroral (Per-Oral Endoscopic Myotomy, POEM), descrita por Haruhiro Inoue en Japón en el año 2008. The word achalasia is a neologism of Greek origin, coined by the English physician Sir Edwin Cooper in 1913, and means no quality of relaxation. Achalasia is a disease clinically manifested by dysphagia with both solids and liquids, esophageal regurgitation, retrosternal pain, cough, bronchial aspiration, pneumonia, heartburn and weight loss. Physiopathologically it corresponds to the loss of esophageal peristalsis and to an insufficient relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). These motor abnormalities are due to the loss of myenteric neurons that coordinate esophageal peristalsis and relaxation of the LES. First described by Sir Thomas Willis in 1674, and although it is currently considered idiopathic, it has begun to be considered as possible causes autoimmune components and genetic predisposition; viral infections by herpes and chickenpox zoster have also been implicated as probable causes. Its incidence ranges from 0.3 to 1.63 per 100,000 adults, with a prevalence of 10 in 100,000 inhabitants per year. It affects equally any gender, and the age group between 30 and 60 years is the most affected. The diagnosis is suspected based on the symptomatology, with dysphagia being the most important symptom. It is confirmed with the performance of endoscopy of the upper digestive tract, esophagogram and high resolution manometry. The treatment remains palliative, and may be guided by the subtype of achalasia, according to the Chicago classification. The best results are obtained by the techniques of pneumatic dilation, Heller's laparoscopic myotomy, and more recently by the POEM technique (per oral endoscopic myotomy), described in 2008 in Japan by Haruhiro Inoue. There is still a lack of prospective randomized studies with long-term follow-up that determine which is the best technique. An updated review of the subject is presented

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the second leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. Most studies addressing the epidemiology of HCC originate from developed countries. This study reports the preliminary findings of a multinational approach to characterize HCC in South America. METHODS: We evaluated 1336 HCC patients seen at 14 centres in six South American countries using a retrospective study design with participating centres completing a template chart of patient characteristics. The diagnosis of HCC was made radiographically or histologically for all cases according to institutional standards. Methodology of surveillance for each centre was following AASLD or EASL recommendations. RESULTS: Sixty-eight percent of individuals were male with a median age of 64 years at time of diagnosis. The most common risk factor for HCC was hepatitis C infection (HCV, 48%), followed by alcoholic cirrhosis (22%), Hepatitis B infection (HBV, 14%) and NAFLD (9%). We found that among individuals with HBV-related HCC, 38% were diagnosed before age 50. The most commonly provided therapy was transarterial chemoembolization (35% of HCCs) with few individuals being considered for liver transplant (<20%). Only 47% of HCCs were diagnosed during surveillance, and there was no difference in age of diagnosis between those diagnosed incidentally vs by surveillance. Nonetheless, being diagnosed during surveillance was associated with improved overall survival (P = .01). CONCLUSIONS: Our study represents the largest cohort to date reporting characteristics and outcomes of HCC across South America. We found an important number of HCCs diagnosed outside of surveillance programmes, with associated increased mortality in those patients.

Information about the use of ombitasvir/paritaprevir/ritonavir/dasabuvir ± ribavirin (OBV/PTV/r/DSV ± RBV) in real-clinical practice in Latin America is scarce. We aimed to confirm safety and effectiveness of OBV/PTV/r/DSV ± RBV therapy in real-world setting. We analyzed a cohort of patients with genotype 1 infection treated with OBV/PTV/r/DSV ± RBV. Data on demographics, clinical features, safety, and virological response were retrospectively collected from 21 centers in Latin America. A total of 96 patients received OBV/PTV/r/DSV, associated with RBV in 68% of the cases. Most were genotype 1b (80%), 56 (58%) had cirrhosis, and 45 (47%) failed prior HCV treatment. Adverse events occurred in 62% of patients. The most common adverse events were pruritus (21%), hyperbilirubinemia (17%), and asthenia (17%). Five patients discontinued therapy prematurely due to hepatic decompensation, three of them were Child-Pugh B at baseline and one patient died due to multi-organ failure. Follow up HCV-RNA 12 weeks after completion of therapy was evaluated in all the patients and sustained virologic response rate was 97%. No virologic breakthrough was detected. Our study confirms that OBV/PTV/r/DSV treatment is highly effective in patients with chronic HCV without cirrhosis or with Child-Pugh A cirrhosis in non-European populations. Adverse events were often mild and rarely led to treatment discontinuation except for patients with Child-Pugh B cirrhosis or with previous history of hepatic decompensation. These results can support the development of public strategies to expand the access of OBV/PTV/r + DSV and other DAAs combinations in order to reduce the burden of HCV infection in our region.

Objetivo: brindar una guía de práctica clínica basada en la evidencia más reciente para el diagnóstico y tratamiento de la enfermedad hepática grasa no alcohólica teniendo en cuenta la efectividad y seguridad de las intervenciones dirigidas a pacientes, personal asistencial, administrativo y entes gubernamentales de cualquier servicio de atención en Colombia. Materiales y métodos: esta guía fue desarrollada por un equipo multidisciplinario con apoyo de la Asociación Colombiana de Gastroenterología, el Grupo Cochrane ITS y el Instituto de Investigaciones Clínicas de la Universidad Nacional de Colombia. Se desarrollaron preguntas clínicas relevantes y se realizó la búsqueda de guías nacionales e internacionales en bases de datos especializadas. Las guías existentes fueron evaluadas en términos de calidad y aplicabilidad; una guía cumplió los criterios de adaptación, por lo que se decidió adaptar 3 preguntas clínicas. El Grupo Cochrane realizó la búsqueda sistemática de la literatura. Las tablas de evidencia y recomendaciones fueron realizadas con base en la metodología GRADE. Las recomendaciones de la guía fueron socializadas en una reunión de expertos con entes gubernamentales y pacientes. Resultados: se desarrolló una guía de práctica clínica basada en la evidencia para el diagnóstico y tratamiento de la enfermedad hepática grasa no alcohólica en Colombia. Conclusiones: el diagnóstico y manejo oportuno de la enfermedad hepática grasa no alcohólica contribuirá a disminuir la carga de la enfermedad en Colombia, así como de las enfermedades asociadas.


Objective: To provide a clinical practice guideline with the latest evidence for diagnosis and treatment of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease for patients, caregivers, administrative and government bodies at all levels of care in Colombia. Materials and Methods: This guide was developed by a multidisciplinary team with the support of the Colombian Association of Gastroenterology, Cochrane STI Group and Clinical Research Institute of the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. Relevant clinical questions were developed and the search for national and international guidelines in databases was performed. Existing guidelines were evaluated about quality and applicability. One guideline met the criteria for adaptation, so the group decided to adapt 3 clinical questions. Systematic literature searches were conducted by the Cochrane Group. The tables of evidence and recommendations were made based on the GRADE methodology. The recommendations of the guide were socialized in a meeting of experts with government agencies and patients. Results: An evidence-based Clinical Practice Guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease was developed for the Colombian context. Conclusions: The opportune detection and appropriate management of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease would contribute to the burden of the disease in Colombia.

BACKGROUND: Increased blood pressure (BP) is common after liver transplantation. However, there is scarce information on its control. METHODS: In this prospective, cross-sectional, multicenter study, we determined BP according to the recommended international standards in 921 liver transplant patients during one routine outpatient visit to assess their grade of control of BP. At the time of the study, 490 patients had been previously diagnosed with arterial hypertension and were receiving antihypertensive treatment, and 431 were not previously diagnosed as hypertensive. RESULTS: In the hypertensive group, arterial hypertension was uncontrolled (BP >140/90 mm Hg [>130/80 in diabetics]) in 158 (32%) patients and controlled in 332 (68%) patients. In a multivariate analysis, only diabetes was identified as a significant predictor of uncontrolled hypertension. Among patients not previously diagnosed as hypertensive, BP was increased in 106 (25%) and normal in 325 (75%). On multivariate analysis, the only variable independently associated with increased BP in this group was metabolic syndrome. CONCLUSION: BP is not adequately controlled in a noticeable percentage of liver transplant patients, especially in subjects with diabetes or metabolic syndrome.

Early calcineurin inhibitor-induced neurotoxicity (ECIIN) is considered when neurological symptoms occur within 4 weeks after liver transplantation (LT). Risk factors and clinical outcome of ECIIN remain largely unknown. We sought to estimate the incidence, risk factors, and outcome of ECIIN after LT. We retrospectively evaluated 158 patients that underwent LT in a 2-year period and received immunosuppression with calcineurin inhibitors (CNI) and prednisone. ECIIN was considered when moderate/severe neurological events (after excluding other etiologies) occurred within 4 weeks after LT and improved after modification of CNI. Demographic and clinical variables were analyzed as risk factors. Twenty-eight (18%) patients developed ECIIN and the remaining 130 patients were analyzed as controls. History of pre-LT hepatic encephalopathy (OR 3.16, 95% CI 1.29-7.75, P = 0.012), post-LT hyponatremia (OR 3.34, 95% CI 1.38-9.85, P = 0.028), and surgical time >7 h (OR 2.62, 95% CI 1.07-6.41, P = 0.035) were independent factors for ECIIN. Acute graft rejection and infections were more frequent in the ECIIN group. In addition, length of stay was longer in ECIIN patients. In conclusion, pre-LT hepatic encephalopathy, surgical time >7 h, and post-LT hyponatremia are risk factors for ECIIN. Clinical complications and a longer hospital stay are associated with ECIIN development.

Mannose-binding lectin (MBL) is a C-type lectin produced mainly by the liver that binds to a wide range of pathogens. Polymorphisms at the promoter and exon 1 of the MBL2 gene are responsible for low serum levels of MBL and have been associated with an increased risk of infections. We prospectively analyzed 95 liver transplant recipients. Well-known functionally relevant polymorphisms of the MBL2 gene of the liver donor were examined by gene sequencing. Infectious events were collected prospectively. No differences in the incidence of infections were found according to the donor MBL2 genotypes. Survival was lower in patients receiving a liver graft from a donor with an exon 1 MBL2 variant genotype, and they had higher infection-related mortality (50% versus 14%, P = 0.040). No differences were found according to other polymorphisms involving the promoter and 5'-untranslated region. When we analyzed bacterial infection episodes, we found that patients receiving a liver from a donor with an exon 1 variant genotype had a higher incidence of septic shock (46% versus 11%, P = 0.004). Independent variables associated with graft or patient survival were as follows: receiving a graft from a donor with an exon 1 MBL2 variant genotype [adjusted hazard ratio (aHR), 9.64; 95% confidence interval (CI), 2.59-36.0], the Model for End-Stage Liver Disease score (aHR, 1.14; 95% CI, 1.05-1.23), and bacterial infections (aHR, 11.1; 95% CI, 2.73-44.9). Liver transplantation from a donor with a variant MBL2 exon 1 genotype was associated with a worse prognosis, mainly because of infections of higher severity.
