The patient, a 66-year-old male, suffered from redness, blurred vision, photophobia, and tearing in the right eye after being injured by a wooden board. Anti-inflammatory treatment showed poor effectiveness. A 4 mm × 4 mm infiltrate with white deposits on the surface was observed in the central cornea of the right eye. Microscopic examination of corneal scrapings, fungal culture, and in vivo confocal microscopy all indicated fungal infection. The isolated strain was identified as Scedosporium apiospermum through microscopic morphology and confirmed as Petriella setifera by gene sequencing. The patient received corneal debridement combined with routine anti-inflammatory and antifungal treatment in the outpatient clinic. During the follow-up period, the condition continued to improve. Slit lamp examination at the revisit 40 days after the initial diagnosis revealed thinning of the corneal stroma, basic healing of the epithelium, and an increase in uncorrected visual acuity from 0.3 to 0.6.

A case of keratitis caused by microsporidia infection was reported. A 57-year-old female patient, without any obvious predisposing cause, presented with eye redness, eye abrasion and vision loss for one year in the left eye. The patient was diagnosed with viral keratitis based on laboratory examinations and clinical symptoms two months ago in our hospital. He was given outpatient treatment for antivirus. Two months later, he was admitted to our hospital with worsened condition that presented with corneal ulcer. After admission, corneal scraping examination was performed for the detection of microsporidia with calcofluor white (CFW) and Ziehl-Neelsen staining, the smear revealed multiple oval spore-like structures, with acid-fast positive and showed blue fluorescence on potassium hydroxide with CFW stain, confirming a diagnosis of microsporidial keratitis in the left eye. Treatment: topical use of ofloxacin eye ointment and voriconazole eye drops was not effective, and then penetrating keratoplasty was performed, and the patient's condition was stable after surgery. At present, they are still in treatment and follow-up.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore the correlation between muscle RAS oncogene homolog (MRAS) gene polymorphism and the onset risk of atherosclerosis (AS). PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 135 AS patients diagnosed and treated in our hospital from November 2017 to October 2018 were randomly enrolled in the observation group. Meanwhile, 150 healthy adults were selected as control group. Venous blood was withdrawn from all the subjects, and DNAs were extracted. MRAS gene loci rs9818870 and rs3755751 were analyzed by the multiplex SNaPshot method, and their correlations with the onset risk of AS were explored. RESULTS: No statistically significant differences in the frequencies at gene loci were observed between the two groups (p>0.05). Subjects with genotype TT at rs9818870 exhibited significantly higher risk of AS (p=0.041<0.05). The recessive model of rs9818870 (GG + AG/AA) in AS patients with coronary heart disease was correlated with AS (p=0.048<0.05). Similarly, the dominant model of rs3755751 (TT/TC+CC) in those with hypertension was associated with AS (p=0.027<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: MRAS gene is correlated with the onset of AS to a certain degree.

UNLABELLED: The trabecular bone score (TBS) was obtained from the gray levels of a dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) image to evaluate bone microarchitecture. Here, we established the reference plots of TBS in healthy Chinese women of Nanjing area. The TBS references are similar with French and US Caucasian women but higher than Japanese women. PURPOSE: The aim of the study was to establish the reference plots of the TBS in healthy Chinese women of the Nanjing area. METHODS: A total of 537 healthy Chinese women of the Nanjing area were recruited, and the study was approved by the Ethics Committee of the First Affiliated Hospital with Nanjing Medical University. The TBS of the lumbar spine and the bone mineral density (BMD) of the lumbar spine and femur were measured using dual X-ray absorptiometry. The mean ± standard deviation (SD) of the TBS in women with different age groups was calculated. The correlation of TBS and age and BMD was calculated using regression analysis. RESULTS: The reference plots of the TBS were established in healthy Chinese women of the Nanjing area between the ages of 20 and 89 years. The average TBS for total subjects was 1.32 ± 0.11 and reached the peak at the age of 20-29 years and then decreased with age thereafter. The determinant coefficient between TBS and age was 0.5065 while between TBS and BMD was 0.5191. After adjusting for lumbar total BMD, the TBS significantly correlated with age in whole subjects and only in the subgroup of ages 50-59 years. CONCLUSIONS: This study suggested that TBS decreased with age and correlated positively with BMD. The TBS reference of Chinese women is similar with those of French and US Caucasian women but higher than that of Japanese women. Furthermore, the TBS may be more significantly applied in women in menopause for less than 10 years.
