BACKGROUND: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) is persistent endocrine disrupting chemicals. Previous evidence suggests that exposure to PFAS is associated with reproductive hormone levels, but the results of relevant studies are inconsistent. The objective of our study is to determine the association between exposure to PFAS and reproductive hormone levels in gender-specific general population. METHOD: Based on scientific search strategies, we systematically searched PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Medline, and Scopus to obtain the eligible studies published before January 21, 2023. The quality of the included articles was assessed using the Office of Health Assessment and Translation (OHAT) Risk of Bias tool. We combined the ß coefficient and 95% confidence intervals (CI) using Stata.17 with random-effect model or fixed-effect model. We also performed subgroup analysis, sensitivity analysis, and Begger's and Egger's tests. RESULTS: Eleven studies involving 7714 participants were included. Meta-analysis showed that PFHxS exposure was positively associated with estradiol (E2) levels in female [ß = 0.030, 95% CI: (0.013, 0.046), P = 0.000]. A negative association was found between PFOA [ß = -0.012, 95% CI: (-0.023, -0.002), P = 0.017] and PFOS [ß = -0.011; 95% CI: (-0.021, -0.000), P = 0.042] exposure with male testosterone (TT) levels. In the subgroup analysis, there were stronger associations in children than in adults. And the high heterogeneity was mainly due to the cross-sectional studies. Publication bias was not found in most of the analyses. CONCLUSION: Our study showed that PFAS exposure was significantly associated with reproductive hormone levels. Further related studies are needed to identify the association and potential mechanism in the future.

AIM: To evaluate the relationship between healthy work environment and work engagement considering the effect of psychological capital among ICU nurses. DESIGN: The study was cross-sectional design. METHODS: The subjects were 671 registered nurses from 20 ICUs in 18 general hospitals in Shandong province between October 2021 and December 2021. The questionnaires testing nurses' perception of healthy work environment, their work engagement, and psychological capital were used. Structural equation modeling was used to explore their relationship. RESULTS: Work engagement was positively affected by a healthy work environment and psychological capital. The structural equation modeling showed psychological capital mediated the relationship between healthy work environment and their work engagement. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: There were 681 clinical nurses reported at public contribution for responding to the questionnaires and providing valuable data for the study and there was no patient contribution in this study.

BACKGROUND: Study showed that systemic holistic care not only aids in disease treatment and physical recovery to a certain extent but also effectively enhances patient psychological well-being, social support, and overall quality of life (QoL). AIM: To assess systematic holistic care impact on the recovery and well-being of postoperative patients with colon cancer. METHODS: Our randomized controlled trial included 98 postoperative patients with colon cancer admitted to our hospital from June 2021 to June 2022. Patients were divided into control and study groups. The control group received conventional postoperative nursing care, whereas the study group received systematic holistic nursing care. We monitored gastrointestinal function recovery, and recorded changes in serum albumin (ALB), prealbumin (PA), psychological state, self-management, self-efficacy, QoL, and the occurrence of complications in patients before, at discharge, and 2 wk post-discharge. Spearman analysis assessed correlations between psychological state, self-management, self-efficacy, and QoL of patients in the study group 2 wk post-discharge. RESULTS: Following the nursing intervention, we observed significantly shorter postoperative bowel sound recovery time, anal exhaust time, and defecation time in the study group than in the control group (P < 0.05). Patient ALB and PA levels, psychological status, self-management ability, self-efficacy and QoL at discharge and 2 wk post-discharge significantly improved, with greater improvements observed in the study group (P < 0.05). Both groups experienced complications post-interventions, but the intervention group had significantly lower complication rate (3/49, 6.12%) (P < 0.05). In the study group, patient anxiety, depression, self-management and QoL scores at 2 wk post-discharge exhibited a significant negative correlation (3/49, 6.12%) with QoL scores, with correlation coefficients of r = -0.273, -0.522, -0.344, and P < 0.01, respectively. Conversely, patient self-efficacy scores 2 wk post-discharge showed a positive correlation with QoL scores (r = 0.410, P = 0.000). CONCLUSION: Systemic holistic nursing significantly benefits postoperative patients with colon cancer by promoting gastrointestinal recovery, improving post-operation well-being, reducing complications, and enhancing QoL.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) rates have dramatically increased. Breastfeeding is a nonpharmacological intervention that may be beneficial, reducing NAS symptom severity and thus the need for and duration of pharmacological treatment and length of hospital stay. OBJECTIVES: Conduct meta-analysis to determine whether breastfeeding results in better outcomes for NAS infants. Variables included symptom severity, need for and duration of pharmacological treatment, and length of hospital stay. METHODS: PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Cochrane Library were searched from 2000 to 2020, and comparative studies examining breastfeeding for NAS infants were extracted. Randomized trials and cohort studies were included. Data were extracted and evaluated with Review Manager Version 5.3. A random-effects model was used to pool discontinuous outcomes using risk ratio and 95% confidence intervals. Continuous outcomes were evaluated by mean differences and 95% confidence intervals. RESULTS: Across 11 studies, 6,375 neonates were included in the meta-analysis. Using a random-effects analysis, breastfeeding reduced initiation of pharmacological treatment, reduced duration of pharmacological treatment, and reduced length of stay. No differences were detected for severity of NAS symptoms. Most studies only reported one to two variables of interest. For most studies, these variables were not the primary study outcomes. All studies were found to be of low risk and good quality based on the Cochrane Risk Assessment Tools. Varying breastfeeding definitions limit generalizability. DISCUSSION: Breastfeeding is associated with decreased initiation and duration of pharmacological treatment and length of stay.

This study aims to identify the risk factors of suicidal ideation (SI) in a large sample of Chinese adults in the labour force. A total of 4136 eligible participants in the labour force were recruited from the routine health check-up cohort. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression were used to identify the factors associated with 12-month and lifetime SI. 175 (4.2%) subjects reported SI in the past twelve months, and 223 (5.4%) reported SI during their lifetime. The results showed that being divorced or widowed, religious belief, personal history of chronic disease and mental illness, family history of mental illness and suicide, and self-assessed childhood happiness were associated with both 12-month and lifetime SI. Additional associations were found between 12-month SI and the following factors: working overtime frequently, low monthly income, and having bachelor's degree. Moreover, being single is a risk factor of lifetime SI while not significant for 12-month SI. The present study identified several risk factors of 12-month and lifetime SI, which could potentially help develop targeted interventions for high-risk suicidal Chinese adults in the labour force.

BACKGROUND: Transplantation of peripheral blood stem cells (PBSCs) mobilized by cytokines is increasingly applied to treat patients with hematologic diseases, such as lymphoma, multiple myeloma, leukemia, etc. Successful hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) increasingly depends on the collection of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) from peripheral blood. Peripheral vein (PV) is the most common type of blood access. When the blood vessels are not well filled and the blood flow is insufficient, the machine will appear repeated low pressure alarm or pipeline coagulation, which seriously affects the collection efficiency. A peripheral artery (PA) is utilized for drawing blood, while a peripheral vein is used for blood return, that is a way to perform apheresis. The advantages of PA are that it ensures adequate extracorporeal circulation blood flow, stable blood flow rate, simple operation, and relatively low price. However, there are very few studies on the efficacy of peripheral arterial access for HSCs collection. Therefore, this retrospective study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of PA and PV access for PBSCs collection. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of 150 apheresis procedures on 26 patients and 95 healthy donors collected by PV or PA access from March 1, 2020 to March 1, 2021. We compared the CD34+ cell count, collection efficiency (CE), duration of processing a single blood volume, number of low-pressure alarms, average blood flow rate and number of punctures between the two groups. Also, we analyzed adverse events. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in the quality of apheresis blood components between the PA group and the PV group. The CD34+ cells collected was 274.16 ± 216.31 × 106 in the PV group and 246.63 ± 127.94 × 106 in the PA group. The CE in the PA group was 49.50 ± 9.88%, higher than 42.39 ± 14.62% in the PV group. The duration of processing a single blood volume was 90.67 ± 15.35 min in the PV group and 79.68 ± 10.28 min in the PA group. The number of low-pressure alarms in the PA group was 0.38 ± 0.98, <2.42 ± 1.76 in the PV group, and the average blood flow rate in the PA group was 59.27 ± 2.18, higher than 54.21 ± 3.41 in the PV group. The difference was statistically significant (P < .05). The Number of punctures was 1.35 ± 0.75 in the PA group and 1.41 ± 1.01 in the PV group. There was no statistically significant difference. CONCLUSION: Peripheral artery is a safe, reliable, economical, convenient, and fast vascular access, which opens a new way to the establishment of vascular access for PBSCs collection.

PURPOSE: Nurses' musculoskeletal diseases (MSDs) are worldwide prevalent and are considered to be a costly occupational injury. This study aims to investigate the relationship between exposure to occupation-related psychosocial factors, physical workload, and upper body musculoskeletal diseases among hospital nurses. METHODS: An electronic search was implemented using nine databases with June 2019 as the latest search date. English and Chinese studies were chosen, and data were independently and separately extracted by two investigators. Pooled odds ratio (OR) and its 95% confidence interval (CI) were estimated for each subset, using the fixed or random-effects model, following heterogeneity between studies for research synthesis. The source of heterogeneity was explored through subgroup, sensitivity, and meta-analyses. RESULTS: Eighteen studies were included in the meta-analysis. Most participants were women (51.4%-100.0%), aged between 20 and 60. A correlation was found between high job demand and the prevalence of low back pain (OR = 1.41; 95% CI = 1.23-1.62). Total job strain was related to the risk of low back pain (OR = 1.71; 95% CI = 1.15-2.55), neck pain (OR = 1.67; 95% CI = 1.26-2.20), shoulder pain (OR = 1.62; 95% CI = 1.06-2.48) and back pain (OR = 1.45; 95% CI = 1.10-1.91). Furthermore, the physical workload was significantly associated with the prevalence of low back pain (OR = 1.76; 95% CI = 1.32-2.35), neck pain (OR = 1.17; 95% CI = 1.08-1.27), shoulder pain (OR = 1.59; 95% CI = 1.37-1.85) and back pain (OR = 1.66; 95% CI = 1.45-1.90). CONCLUSION: There were significant associations between occupational strain, more physical workload and upper body MSDs, but the evidence advocating a growth risk in MSDs due to low levels of social support is quite weak.

AIMS: We review the current literatures to determine whether intermittent phototherapy is more effective than continuous phototherapy in treating neonatal hyperbilirubinaemia. DESIGN: The systematic review is a systematic review and meta-analysis. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were used for reporting methods and results of synthesis with meta-analysis. Synthesis Without Meta-analysis (SWIM) guidelines were used for reporting methods and results of synthesis without meta-analysis. DATA SOURCE: Pubmed, Embase, Cochrane library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, China Biology Medicine, VIP Database, and Wanfang Database. REVIEW METHODS: PICOS eligibility criteria were used to select original studies published from 1984 through 2019. Data were statistically extracted and evaluated using RevMan 5.3 software. RESULTS: A total of 416 records were identified through database searching. Four studies (three randomized studies and one retrospective study) meet the final inclusion criteria. Seven hundred and sixteen neonates were included in the meta-analysis. There was no difference in the treatment efficacy and total serum bilirubin (TSB), while there was a significant difference in phototherapy duration and side effects after treatment of intermittent phototherapy and continuous phototherapy for neonatal hyperbilirubinaemia. CONCLUSION: Intermittent phototherapy appeared to be as effective as continuous phototherapy for the treatment of neonatal hyperbilirubinaemia and is safer than continuous phototherapy. Healthcare organizations and health workers should choose intermittent phototherapy as the preferred therapy for neonatal hyperbilirubinaemia. IMPACT: Intermittent phototherapy is an effective, feasible, and safer treatment method for the infants with hyperbilirubinaemia in paediatric department. Healthcare organizations and health workers should choose intermittent phototherapy as the preferred therapy for neonatal hyperbilirubinaemia.

The novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) was first detected in patients with pneumonia of an unknown cause in Wuhan, China in December 2019. It has since been confirmed as the pathogen for the new coronavirus pneumonia, recently named "coronavirus disease 2019" (COVID-19) by the World Health Organization. Although the general population is commonly susceptible to the disease, infected elderly people show fast progression and severe manifestations with a high proportion in critical condition as a result of compromised immunity and underlying diseases. In order to improve the quality of nursing, reduce complications, and decrease mortality of critically ill elderly patients, we assembled a national expert group with expertise in critical nursing to write this consensus, based on a literature review and a subsequent panel discussion. The consensus covers the assessment, clinical nursing, discharge care, and other aspects of care for critically ill elderly patients with COVID-19, aiming to share insights and provide guidance for clinical practice.

Objective. Phototherapy devices have been found to be an effective method for treating neonatal hyperbilirubinemia. We reviewed the current literature to determine whether home-based phototherapy is more effective than hospital-based phototherapy for the treatment of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia. Method. PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Cochrane library, CBM, CNKI, and Wanfang Data were searched to collect the comparative study of home-based phototherapy versus hospital-based phototherapy for the treatment of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia. All studies were found to be of low risk based on Cochrane Collaborative Risk of Bias Tool. Data were statistically extracted and evaluated by RevMan 5.3 software. Result. A total of 259 neonates were included in the meta-analysis. Compared with hospital-based phototherapy, home-based phototherapy appeared more effective for the treatment of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia in reducing the rate of total serum bilirubin (standard mean difference = 0.32, 95% confidence interval = -0.22 to 0.86, P = .04); however, there was no significant difference in duration of phototherapy (standard mean difference = 0.59, 95% confidence interval = 0.28 to 0.90, P = .06) in the 2 groups. Conclusion. Home-based phototherapy was more effective than hospital-based phototherapy in treatment for neonatal hyperbilirubinemia; home-based phototherapy is an effective, feasible, safe, and alternative to hospital-based phototherapy for neonatal hyperbilirubinemia.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of transcutaneous neuromuscular electrical stimulation on swallowing disorders. DESIGN: MEDLINE/PubMed, Embase, CENTRAL, Web of science, and PEDro were searched from their earliest record to August 1, 2019. All randomized controlled trials and quasi-randomized controlled trial were identified, which compared the efficacy of neuromuscular electrical stimulation plus traditional therapy with traditional therapy in swallowing function. The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation approach was applied to evaluate the quality of evidence. RESULTS: Eight randomized controlled trials and three quasi-randomized controlled trials were included. These studies demonstrated a significant, moderate pooled effect size (standard mean difference = 0.62; 95% confidence interval = 0.06 to 1.17). Studies stimulating suprahyoid muscle groups revealed a negative standard mean difference of 0.17 (95% confidence interval = -0.42, 0.08), whereas large effect size was observed in studies stimulating the infrahyoid muscle groups (standard mean difference = 0.89; 95% confidence interval = 0.47 to 1.30) and stimulating the suprahyoid and infrahyoid muscle groups (standard mean difference = 1.4; 95% confidence interval = 1.07 to 1.74). Stimulation lasting 45 mins or less showed a large, significant pooled effect size (standard mean difference = 0.89; 95% confidence interval = 0.58 to 1.20). The quality of evidences was rated as low to very low. CONCLUSIONS: There is no firm evidence to conclude on the efficacy of neuromuscular electrical stimulation on swallowing disorders. Larger-scale and well-designed randomized controlled trials are needed to reach robust conclusions.

This meta-analysis was to summarize the published studies about the association between red/processed meat consumption and the risk of lung cancer. 5 databases were systematically reviewed, and random-effect model was used to pool the study results and to assess dose-response relationships. Results shown that six cohort studies and twenty eight case-control studies were included in this meat-analysis. The pooled Risk Radios (RR) for total red meat and processed meat were 1.44 (95% CI, 1.29-1.61) and 1.23 (95% CI, 1.10-1.37), respectively. Dose-response analysis revealed that for every increment of 120 grams red meat per day the risk of lung cancer increases 35% and for every increment of 50 grams red meat per day the risk of lung cancer increases 20%. The present dose-response meta-analysis suggested that both red and processed meat consumption showed a positive effect on lung cancer risk.
