RESUMEN

Gold nanomaterials have been widely explored in electrochemical sensors due to their high catalytic property and good stability in multi-medium. In this paper, the reproducibility of the signal among batches of gold nanorods (AuNRs)-modified electrodes was investigated to improve the data stabilization and repeatability. Ordered and random self-assembled AuNRs-modified electrodes were used as electrochemical sensors for the simultaneous determination of dopamine (DA) and topotecan (TPC), with the aim of obtaining an improved signal stability in batches of electrodes and realizing the simultaneous determination of both substances. The morphology and structure of the assemblies were analyzed and characterized by UV-Vis spectra, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). Electrochemical studies showed that the ordered AuNRs/ITO electrodes have excellent signal reproducibility among several individuals due to the homogeneous mass transfer in the ordered arrangement of the AuNRs. Under the optimized conditions, the simultaneous detection results of DA and TPC showed good linearity in the ranges 1.75-45 µM and 1.5-40 µM, and the detection limits of DA and TPC were 0.06 µM and 0.17 µM, respectively. The results showed that the prepared ordered AuNR/ITO electrode had high sensitivity, long-term stability, and reproducibility for the simultaneous determination of DA and TPC, and it was expected to be applicable for real sample testing.

With the annual increases in the morbidity and mortality rates of tumors, the use of biomarkers for early diagnosis and real-time monitoring of tumor cells is of great importance. Biomarkers used for tumor cell detection in body fluids include circulating tumor cells, nucleic acids, protein markers, and extracellular vesicles. Among them, circulating tumor cells, circulating tumor DNA, and exosomes have high potential for the prediction, diagnosis, and prognosis of tumor diseases due to the large amount of valuable information on tumor characteristics and evolution; in addition, in situ monitoring of telomerase and miRNA in living cells has been the topic of extensive research to understand tumor development in real time. Various techniques, such as enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, immunoblotting, and mass spectrometry, have been widely used for the detection of these markers. Among them, the detection of tumor cell markers in body fluids based on electrochemical biosensors and fluorescence signal analysis is highly preferred because of its high sensitivity, rapid detection and portable operation. Herein, we summarize recent research progress in the detection of tumor cell biomarkers in body fluids using electrochemical and fluorescence biosensors, outline the current research status of in situ fluorescence monitoring and the analysis of tumor markers in living cells, and discuss the technical challenges for their practical clinical application to provide a reference for the development of new tumor marker detection methods.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of the study was to evaluate the therapeutic effects of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) in immunomodulation on non-obese diabetic (NOD) mice, as the model for Sjögren's syndrome (SS). METHODS: Carbon quantum dots were generated from Setaria viridis via a hydrothermal process. Their toxic effects were tested by cell viability and blood chemistry analysis, meanwhile therapeutic effects were investigated in NOD mice in the aspects of saliva flow, histology, and immune cell distribution. RESULTS: Carbon quantum dots, with rich surface chemistry and unique optical properties, showed non-cytotoxicity in vitro or no damage in vivo. Intravenously applied CQDs alleviated inflammation in the submandibular glands in NOD mice after 6-week treatments. The inflammatory area index and focus score were significantly decreased in CQD-treated mice. Besides, the levels of anti-SSA and anti-SSB were decreased in the presence of CQDs. The stimulated saliva flow rates and weight of submandibular glands were significantly increased in CQD-treated mice by reducing the apoptosis of cells. The CD3+ and CD4+ T cells distributed around the ducts of submandibular glands were significantly decreased, while the percentage of Foxp3+ cells was higher in CQD-treated mice than that in the control group. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that CQDs may ameliorate the dysregulated immune processes in NOD mice.

Food-derived carbon quantum dots (CQDs) can relatively easily be synthesized and chemically manipulated for a broad spectrum of biomedical applications. However, their toxicity may hinder their actual use. Here, Spinacia oleracea-derived CQDs i.e., CQD-1 and CQD-2, were synthesized by means of different shredding methods and followed by a microwave-assisted hydrothermal approach. Subsequently, these CQDs were analyzed in vitro and in an in vivo mice model to test their biocompatibility and potential use as bioimaging agents and for activation of osteogenic differentiation. When comparing CQD-1 and CQD-2, it was found that CQD-1 exhibited 7.6 times higher photoluminescent (PL) emission intensity around 411 nm compared to CQD-2. Besides, it was found that the size distribution of CQD-1 was 2.05 ± 0.08 nm, compared with 2.14 ± 0.04 nm for CQD-2. Upon exposure to human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hBMSCs) in vitro, CQD-1 was endocytosed into the cytoplasm and significantly increased the differentiation of hBMSCs up to 10 µg mL-1 after 7 and 14 days. Apparently, the presence of relatively low doses of CQD-1 showed virtually no toxic or histological effects in the major organs in vivo. In contrast, high doses of CQD-1 (1 mg mL-1) caused cell death in vitro ranging from 35% on day 1 to 80% on day 3 post-exposure, and activated the apoptotic machinery and increased lymphocyte aggregates in the liver tissue. In conclusion, S. oleracea-derived CQDs have the potential for biomedical applications in bioimaging and activation of stem cells osteogenic differentiation. Therefore, it is postulated that CQD-1 from S. oleracea remains potential prospective material at appropriate doses and specifications.

BACKGROUND: Studies on the gender-specific effect of PrA on children's emotional and behavioral development are limited. Lack of PrA data on the entire pregnancy had caused difficulties in identifying the key time window and cumulative effects. METHODS: Based on Ma'anshan Birth Cohort in China, mothers at pregnancy and children followed up to 4 years of age were tested using the PrA questionnaire and the Achenbach Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) 1.5-5. Finally, 1699 mother-child pairs were included in the study and regression models were developed for analysis. RESULTS: Children of mothers with PrA are at significantly elevated risk for abnormal mood/behavior at preschool age. Girls seemed to be more sensitive to maternal PrA than boys, mainly manifested in internalizing problems; The third trimester of pregnancy might be a critical time window when maternal PrA affected children's internalizing problems; Longer the duration women had PrA during pregnancy, more possibilities their children would have to develop internalizing and externalizing problems. LIMITATIONS: The PrA questionnaire may be different from PrA questionnaires in other countries such as due to different cultural contexts. Findings need to be interpreted with more caution. Factors such as maternal postpartum depression and care practices of nursing staff were not considered. No data were collected on disease as well as caregiver emotional status, which also impacts the reporting and identification of emotional/behavioral problems in children. CONCLUSIONS: Gender-specific and cumulative effect of PrA on preschoolers' emotional/behavioral development is observed. The third trimester of pregnancy might be the critical time window.

The fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) have found their extensive applications in sensing, bioimaging, and photoelectronic devices. In general terms, the synthesis of CDs is straight-forward, though their subsequent purification can be laborious. Therefore, there is a need for easier ways to generate solid CDs with a high conversion yield. Herein, we used collagen waste as a carbon source in producing solid CDs through a calcination procedure without additional chemical decomposition treatment of the raw material. Considering a mass of acid has destroyed the original protein macromolecules into the assembled structure with amino acids and peptide chains in the commercial extraction procedure of collagen product. The residual tissues were assembled with weak intermolecular interactions, which would easily undergo dehydration, polymerization, and carbonization during the heat treatment to produce solid CDs directly. The calcination parameters were surveyed to give the highest conversion yield at 78%, which occurred at 300°C for 2 h. N and S atomic doping CDs (N-CDs and S-CDs) were synthesized at a similar process except for immersion of the collagen waste in sulfuric acid or nitric acid in advance. Further experiments suggested the prepared CDs can serve as an excellent sensor platform for Fe3+ in an acid medium with high anti-interference. The cytotoxicity assays confirmed the biosafety and biocompatibility of the CDs, suggesting potential applications in bioimaging. This work provides a new avenue for preparing solid CDs with high conversion yield.

BACKGROUND: The rate of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been rising worldwide, and therefore it is important to identify potential causes of ASD to facilitate early prevention. This study examined the role of breastfeeding and the association between caesarean delivery (CD) and children's autism spectrum disorder. METHODS: The data were from the Ma'anshan birth cohort (MABC) in China, that was set up between May 2013 and September 2014. Women within 14 gestational weeks were recruited. The delivery mode was extracted from medical notes and infant feeding was obtained from questionnaire surveys. Autism-like behaviour was assessed using the Checklist for Autism in Toddlers (CHAT-23) when children were 18 months old, and 3 years of age. At 5 years of age, autism-like behaviour was assessed using the Clancy Autism Behavior Scale behavior. Structural equation models tested the mediation effects of breastfeeding between CD and children's autism spectrum disorder. RESULTS: In all, 1520 (48.89%) women gave birth via CD, and 406 (13.86%) children were identified with autism-like behaviours at 18 months. Compared with women giving birth via vaginal delivery, those giving birth via CD were more likely to experience a higher proportion of delayed initiation of breastfeeding (p < 0.01), and delayed onset of lactogenesis (p < 0.01). CD was associated with a lower proportion of exclusive breastfeeding at 4 months after delivery (p = 0.02). Autism-like behaviour was less likely amongst infants with exclusively breastfeeding at 4 months than amongst those not exclusively breastfeeding at 4 months (p < 0.01). SEM indicated that women who gave birth by CD were more likely to stop exclusive breastfeeding in the first 4 months (standard estimations = - 0.04, p = 0.02), and those children who were not exclusively breastfed at 4 months were more likely to have autism-like behaviours (standard estimations = - 0.05, p < 0.01). The associations persisted at 3 years, but not at 5 years. CONCLUSIONS: Exclusive breastfeeding at 4 months of age mediated the association between caesarean delivery and children's autism-like behaviours.

OBJECTIVES: To understand the sex difference in age at adiposity rebound (AR), integrate the prevalence of early AR (EAR), and provide a quantitative association between early age at AR and overweight/obesity. METHODS: Literature review was conducted in different databases, including the Web of Science, PubMed, EMBASE, Wiley, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, and ScienceDirect databases up to August 2021. Studies that reported data related to AR were considered for inclusion. Pooled effect sizes and their respective 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using random effects models, depending on the size of heterogeneity. Heterogeneity was tested by using the I2 statistics. RESULTS: 28 studies with a combined sample size of 106,397 people were included in the final meta-analysis. Girls had a significantly earlier age of AR than boys (mean difference = 3.38 months; 95% CI 2.14-4.63). The overall prevalence of EAR was 40% (95% CI 31% to 50%), and the prevalence in girls was 5% higher than that in boys based on the definition of age at AR < 5.0-5.1 years. The overall pooled prevalence of EAR showed an increasing trend by child's birth year [1934-1973]: 29% (95% CI 22% to 37%), 1991-2001: 35% (95% CI 26% to 44%), and 2002-2009: 52% (95% CI 40-63%). Early age at AR (age at AR < 5.0-5.1 years) was associated with a significantly increased risk of overweight/obesity (OR = 5.07; 95% CI 3.60-7.12), overweight (OR = 3.10; 95% CI 1.69-5.70), and obesity (OR = 6.97; 95% CI 4.32-11.26) from the preschool period to adulthood. CONCLUSIONS: The overall prevalence of EAR is increasing, and girls experience AR earlier than boys. The early age at AR in children may be an early and effective marker of obesity.

The human bronchial epithelial cells (HBE) and K-ras-silenced HBE cells were treated with fine particulate matter (PM2.5) samples from Taiyuan for 24 h. To screen the proteomic characteristics of PM2.5-induced differentially expressed proteins (DEPs), the Q Exactive mass spectrometer was used. Gene ontology (GO) analysis, Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes (KEGG) analysis, functional prediction, protein-protein interaction (PPI) network analysis, and visualization of differential protein interactions were performed. 251 DEPs in K-ras silenced cells and 535 DEPs in normal HBE cells were identified, respectively. KEGG analysis showed that the differentially expressed proteins of PM2.5-treated cells were related to the biosynthesis of ribosomes, antibiotics, and amino acids. On the other hand, K-ras silenced cells were related to metabolic pathways, RNA transport, and DNA replication. Through the construction of a PPI network, the top 10 hub proteins were screened from the two cell groups, among which MRPL13, RPS20, and EIF1AX were of great significance. Our results indicated that the K-ras gene plays an important role in PM2.5-induced DEPs, and the findings provide a scientific basis for the further study of PM2.5 toxic mechanisms and biomarkers.

The timing of daughter's puberty onset is constantly earlier. It is still unclear about the maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) and gestational weight gain (GWG) as important prenatal factors that may affect offspring's onset of puberty. Thus, we evaluated the association among maternal pre-pregnancy BMI, GWG, and daughters' early pubertal development based on the existing literature. Literature review was conducted in different databases, including Web of Science, Pubmed, Wiley, ScienceDirect, Web of Science, and Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure databases up to June 2021. We selected random effects model or fixed effects model for meta-analysis according to the I2 statistics value to obtain the summary measurement. A total of 12 cohort studies were included. Compared to maternal pre-pregnancy normal weight, maternal pre-pregnancy overall overweight/obesity (RR = 1.24; 95% CI 1.17 to 1.32), obesity (RR = 1.35; 95% CI 1.23 to 1.48), and overweight (RR = 1.17; 95% CI 1.09 to 1.26) were significantly associated with the increased risk of earlier timing of pubertal onset in daughters. Daughters born of mothers with pre-pregnancy overall overweight/obesity, obesity, and overweight had earlier pubertal onset compared to those born of mothers with normal weight ([mean difference = -3.03, 95% CI: -3.97 to -2.10], [mean difference = -3.50, 95% CI: -5.38 to -1.62], and [mean difference = -2.89, 95% CI: -4.07 to -1.71], respectively). The effects were also significant in the assessed three milestones (menarche, breast development, and pubic hair development). Maternal excessive GWG increased the risk of early pubertal timing in daughters (RR = 1.19; 95% CI 1.09 to 1.30).

OBJECTIVE: An ultra performance liquid chromatography-hybrid triple quadrupole linear ion trap-mass spectrometry(UPLC-QqLIT-MS) was established for determination of lipophilic marine biotoxins in shellfish. And the 12 lipophilic marine biotoxins in shellfish were surveyed. METHODS: The lipophilic marine biotoxins in homogenized shellfish were ultrasonically extracted by methanol in super-sonic instrument, and cleaned up by solid phase extraction of Strata-X column, and eluted with methanol(containing 0.3% ammonia water). The elution was diluted with water, and cleaned by 0.22 µm millipore filter. The filtrate was separated on a Waters ACQUITY UPLC BEH C_(18) column(150 mm×2.1 mm, 1.7 µm)by gradient elution in 12 minutes with acetronitrile-water(containing 0.01%(V/V) ammonia and 2 mmol/L ammonium formate) as mobile phase, and detected by ultra performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry(UPLC-MS/MS), identified by electrospray ionization(ESI) in simultaneous scanning mode of positive and negative ions using multiple reaction monitoring, and quantified with external standards. Information dependent acquisition scan function(IDA) combined with enhanced production scan(EPI) was used to confirm the 12 lipophilic marine biotoxins. RESULTS: The calibration curves of 12 lipophilic marine biotoxins showed good linearity in the range of 0.5-50 µg/L with correlation coefficients were 0.9984-0.9999.The detection limits of the method were 0.15-0.29 µg/kg. The recoveries of three spiking levels ranged from 80.0% to 116.0%, and the relative standard deviation(RSD) were 0.6%-6.4%(n=7). CONCLUSION: The method for determination of 12 lipophilic marine biotoxins in shellfish by UPLC-QqLIT-MS was of operation convenience, less interference from impurities and good accuracy, which could meet the requirements for the determination of 12 lipophilic marine biotoxins residues in sea foods.

Increasing caesarean section (CS) rates are of global concern not only for health care providers but also from a more general public health point of view. Growing concern on the association between CS and offspring's neurodevelopmental outcomes have been raised in recent years, but the effect of CS on offspring's emotional development is rarely reported. By using mice models, we have set up two groups, ie. offspring born via CS and in-fostered by dams with vaginal delivery (VD), and offspring born via VD and in-fostered by their non-biological mothers. Depression-like behavioral was evaluated by sucrose preference test and forced swimming test, and anxiety-like behavioral was evaluated by open-field test and elevated plus maze test, respectively during offspring's adolescence and adulthood. Offspring's prefrontal cortex was collected for HE staining and assessment for DA, HVA, 5-HT, 5-HIAA. It was found that offspring born of CS have anxiety-like and depression-like behaviors in adolescence and adulthood. Male offspring was sensitive to be depressive and female offspring tended to be anxious. Although no significant sex difference was observed, there existed edema and nuclear retraction of neurons in the prefrontal cortex in offspring via CS during adolescence and adulthood. Compared with offspring born via VD, offspring through CS had shown higher DA and HVA levels while lower 5-HT and 5-HIAA levels in adolescence and adulthood, and this difference was observed in female offspring. The findings highlight the sex-specific effect of CS on offspring's emotional development. Variations in key neurotransmitters in the prefrontal cortex may partly explain the association between CS and offspring's emotional symptoms.

In this study, we develop a highly sensitive and selective photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor for bisphenol A (BPA) determination by combining a TiO2/CdS heterostructure with inorganic framework molecular imprinting (MI) technology. A MI-TiO2/CdS heterostructure was synthesized via successive ionic layer adsorption combined with an inorganic framework molecular imprinting method. Due to the matched energy level distribution of TiO2 with CdS, the formed heterojunction promotes photogenerated charge separation and enhanced PEC conversion. The MI-TiO2/CdS based PEC sensor exhibits higher photocurrent responses and perfect selectivity for BPA under simulated sunlight irradiation. Benefiting from the unique heterostructure and special recognition ability of MI-TiO2/CdS, the photocurrent is linear to the concentration of BPA (range from 1 to 100 pmol L-1), with a low limit detection of 0.5 pmol L-1 (S/N = 3). Meanwhile, the detection results show that the PEC sensor exhibits excellent sensitivity, high selectivity, and good stability. Furthermore, the PEC sensor was successfully applied to the real environmental sample detection of BPA, in lake and river water, domestic wastewater and tap water. This PEC sensor exhibits favourable BPA detection, and it is also a promising method by which to measure other similar environmental substances selectively and sensitively in future work.

BACKGROUND: Elective cesarean section (ECS) is the most common reason for the increasing cesarean section rate worldwide, and it is reported to be related to adverse short-term and long-term outcomes in both mothers and infants. Findings on the association between ECS and overweight and obesity in children are controversial in recent studies. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine the effect of ECS on offspring's overweight and obesity. METHODS: PubMed, Science Direct, Web of Science, CNKI (China National Knowledge Infrastructure), Wanfang Database (in Chinese), and China Biology Medicine disc databases were searched using different combinations of three groups of keywords: "elective cesarean section," "overweight/obesity," and "children." Nine cohort studies and 11 independent risk estimates were finally identified. RESULTS: We have observed significant association between ECS and children's obesity, the total pooled risk ratio (RR) being 1.10 (95% CI: 1.01-1.18; I 2 = 32.4%). In subgroup analysis, ECS was found to be associated with the occurrence of obesity in preschoolers (RR = 1.12, 95% CI: 1.02-1.22; I 2 = 16.8%). Furthermore, it revealed that ECS was related with the high risk of children's obesity where the rate of ECS exceeded 10%. No significant association was observed between ECS and children's overweight, and the RR was 1.12 (95% CI: 0.94-1.30; I 2 = 55.6%). CONCLUSIONS: Overall, it indicated that children born via ECS had an increased risk of later-life obesity. Given the global increase in childhood obesity, our findings would provide evidence-based reference for early life intervention on children's obesity. BACKGROUND: Sulfonamides are widely used to treat infectious diseases during pregnancy. However, the safety of maternal exposure to sulfonamides is controversial. This study aims to systematically review the available studies and examine the effect of maternal sulfonamides use on adverse pregnancy outcomes. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Science Direct, Web of Science, ClinicalTrials.gov, CNKI and Wanfang Database (in Chinese). The meta-analysis used random effects model or fixed effects model to obtain the total odds ratio (OR) for each outcome through Stata11.0 software. Study on the relationship between sulfonamide exposure during pregnancy and adverse pregnancy outcomes. The study design covered randomized controlled trials, cohort studies and case-control studies. The study protocol was registered in PROSPERO with protocol number CRD42020178687. RESULTS: A total of 10 studies, and 1096350 participants were included for systematic review. Maternal exposure to sulfonamides was found to be possibly associated with increased risk of congenital malformations (OR = 1.21, 95% CI 1.07-1.37). The use of sulfonamides in the first trimester of pregnancy and during the entire pregnancy might be associated with congenital malformations. CONCLUSIONS: Maternal exposure to sulfonamides may be associated with offspring' s congenital malformations. Prescription of sulfonamides for pregnant women is suggested to be carefully censored.

Palladium nanoparticles, which were prepared by modified hyperbranched polyglycerol (mHPG) as stabilizers, can be dispersed well in nonpolar organic solvents and form highly stable nanofluids. The influences of three mHPG products modified with cyclohexanethiol (CSHPG), dodecanethiol (DSHPG), and octadecanethiol (OSHPG) on the preparation and stability of the palladium nanoparticles were investigated. The stability and thermal conductivity enhancement of the hydrocarbon-based nanofluids with Pd@mHPG (Pd@CSHPG, Pd@DSHPG, and Pd@OSHPG) compared to the corresponding base fluid were investigated at different temperatures. The average diameters of nanoparticles stabilized by CSHPG, DSHPG, and OSHPG are within 2.7-3.6 nm. The palladium nanoparticles could be dispersed well in the nonpolar base fluid such as decalin. The nanofluids with Pd@DSHPG and Pd@OSHPG could remain stable for up to 330 days at room temperature. The nanofluid with Pd@DSHPG or Pd@OSHPG could be stable for more than 24 h at 110 °C. The thermal conductivity of the nanofluids improved with increasing temperature and the mass fraction of nanoparticles compared to the corresponding base fluid. The long alkyl chain-modified HPG can give better protection for nanoparticles from agglomeration and assist metal nanoparticles in enhancing the thermal conductivity of nanofluids.

One-dimensional (1D) nanomaterials with specific architectures have received increasing attention for both scientific and technological interests for their applications in catalysis, sensing, and energy conversion, etc. However, the development of an operable and simple method for the fabrication of 1D nanostructures remains a challenge. In this work, we developed an "anion-regulated morphology" strategy, in which anions could regulate the dimensionally-restricted anisotropic growth of ZnO nanomaterials by adjusting the surface energy of different growth facets. ZnO 1D necklace-like nanostructures (NNS) could be prepared through a hydrothermal treatment of zinc acetate and urea mixture together with a subsequent calcination procedure at 400 °C. While replacing the acetate ions to nitrate, sulfate, and chlorion ions produced ZnO nanoflowers, nanosheets and hexagonal nanoplates, respectively. Density functional theory calculations were carried out to explain the mechanism behind the anions-regulating anisotropic crystal growth. The specified ZnO 1D NNS offered improved electron transport while the grain surface could supply enlarged specific surface area, thus providing advanced photocatalytic ability in the following photodegradation of methyl orange (MO). Among the four photocatalysts with different morphologies, ZnO 1D NNS, possessing the highest catalytic activity, degraded 57.29% MO in the photocatalytic reaction, which was 2 times, 10 times and 17 times higher than nanoflowers, nanosheets and hexagonal nanoplates, respectively. Our work provides new ideas for the construction and application of ZnO 1D nanomaterials.

Due to the defects of optical systems, image sensors, and imperfect algorithms for image acquisition, compression, and restoration, color artifacts often appear in images obtained by imaging devices such as digital cameras and scanners. Moreover, color artifacts are difficult to eliminate because of technical limitations, even in some mature commercial cameras. On the basis of red, green, and blue (RGB) intersection (RGBI), a correction method for color artifacts is proposed in this paper, where the RGB intersection-based method can effectively detect various types of color artifacts. Also, by combining the object information with weighted bilinear interpolation, the continuity of the image is kept while restoring the real color. Experiments demonstrate that the RGBI method, which is applicable to all color images, can eliminate various types of color artifacts with accurate detection and less artifact residue, even if the image has severe color distortion or the areas of the color artifacts are small and discrete.

Myopia is the most common form of refractive eye disease, and the prevalence is increasing rapidly worldwide. However, the key metabolic alterations in individuals with high myopia are not understood clearly, and serum biomarkers remain to be determined. The objectives of this study were to identify serum biomarkers and investigate the metabolic alterations of myopia. The serum metabolomics profiling was investigated on 30 high myopia cases and 30 controls (without myopia) using liquid chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-QTOF/MS), and an independent additional cohort including 20 cases and 19 controls were investigated to validate potential metabolite candidates for biomarkers. According to the metabolic differences, the myopia patients and controls could be divided into different clusters and nine metabolites were found to be closely correlated with myopia. In the cohort of validation, eight metabolites were confirmed. Metabolic pathway analyses of these metabolites of high myopia involved abnormal phospholipid, diacylglycerol, amino acid, and vitamin metabolism, which were closely correlated with oxidative stress and inflammation. Multiple logistic regression analyses showed that γ-glutamyltyrosine and 12-oxo-20-trihydroxy-leukotriene B4 were potential biomarkers of myopia with a combined high sensitivity (97%), specificity (90%), and area under the curve value (0.983). These findings may contribute to an understanding of the pathophysiological changes and pathogenesis of myopia, and provide novel insight into the early prevention and control of high myopia.
