RESUMEN

Introduction: The leadership literature has been dominated by the study of broad styles rather than the identification of specific key behaviors. To address this deficiency, a mixed method approach was utilized to explore how follower behavioral descriptions of their leaders would relate to potential outcomes of trust in that leader and job satisfaction. Methods: Data were collected from 273 hospital direct reports of 44 managers. They were asked to first describe the leadership approach of their managers in their own words, and then complete quantitative measures of the two potential outcomes. Results: The qualitative responses were coded into nine leadership behavior themes listed here in order from most to least often mentioned: Kindness, Supportive, Open to Input, Allow Autonomy, Engage with Team, Transparency, Fairness, Professionalism, Hold Accountable. All behavior themes related significantly to trust of the leader, with three themes relating significantly to job satisfaction (Transparency, Fairness, and Professionalism). Discussion: These results provide a more specific view of leader behavior than does the typical style approach.

The increasing complexity of healthcare emphasizes the need for continued physician leadership and leadership training. This study aims to determine baseline attitudes toward the perceptions and utility of a leadership development curriculum (LDC) for radiation oncology (RO) residents. A novel longitudinal LDC was implemented for RO residents at our institution from 2018 to 2019. Prior to the curriculum, current and past residents in our institution's RO residency program were surveyed on their attitudes towards leadership in healthcare, emotional intelligence competencies, and leadership training interests. After the completion of the LDC, a post-curriculum survey was forwarded to current residents. The response rate was 84% (21 of 24) for the baseline survey and 90% (9 of 10) for the post-curriculum survey. Having a leadership training curriculum during residency was rated as extremely useful, with top training interests involving leading clinical teams, effective communication strategies, and conflict management. After the LDC, the residents reported high satisfaction with the curriculum and utilization of leadership training into their daily work. Our LDC demonstrates significant potential to engage trainees and improve their leadership skills at the graduate medical education level.

BACKGROUND: Efficacy of medical student substance use interventions in the emergency department (ED) setting remains unstudied. OBJECTIVE: In this pilot study, we set out to determine whether medical students could perform a brief motivational interview for substance use in the ED. METHODS: At two hospitals, medical students utilized motivational interviewing skills taught by their medical school curriculum and administered a substance use intervention to ED patients who met the study definition of unhealthy substance use. RESULTS: In 6 weeks, medical students gave a brief intervention to 102 subjects. The mean age of the subjects was 46.9 (standard deviation 15.6) years. The majority, 86 (86.3%) identified as white. Fifty-four (52.9%) identified as male. Eighty of 102 (78.4%) participants completed a phone follow-up assessment. Of the 69 smokers, 11 (15.9%) reported attempting to quit or quitting completely. Of the 33 with high-risk alcohol use, 11 (33.3%) were abstaining completely from alcohol use and an additional 12 (36.4%) reported a decrease in alcohol daily consumption (measured in drinks per day). Warm hand-off success for street drugs or at-risk alcohol use was 13.6% for those who received an intervention. CONCLUSIONS: It is feasible for medical students to perform a substance use intervention in the ED setting. Medical student contributions as a part of the team response to this public health crisis provide an opportunity for further discussion and research.

RESUMEN

The career path for many professionals is often into a leadership role, yet many professionals do not have the competencies or inclination to lead. This study explores physician leaders as a representative group of professionals. While there have been many efforts at understanding the characteristics of effective physician leaders, a greater understanding is needed on the nature of physician leadership. The largest healthcare organization for physician leaders in the United States was surveyed to gain a greater understanding of the nature of leadership. Partial Lease Squares (PLS) was used to analyze results from 677 online surveys to understand the causal relationship of role conflict and role endorsement to participation. The findings reveal the mediating influence that positivity exerts upon participation, and offers health care leaders an opportunity to increase understanding of the social identification process that leads a higher level of professional participation, which may increase effectiveness for physicians in leadership.
