RESUMEN

Cell surface neural adhesion proteins are critical components in the complex orchestration of cell proliferation, apoptosis, and neuritogenesis essential for proper brain construction and behavior. We focused on the impact of two plasticity-associated IgLON family neural adhesion molecules, Neurotrimin (Ntm) and Limbic system associated membrane protein (Lsamp), on mouse behavior and its underlying neural development. Phenotyping neurons derived from the hippocampi of Lsamp-/-, Ntm-/- and Lsamp-/-Ntm-/- mice was performed in parallel with behavioral testing. While the anatomy of mutant brains revealed no gross changes, the Ntm-/- hippocampal neurons exhibited premature sprouting of neurites and manifested accelerated neurite elongation and branching. We propose that Ntm exerts an inhibitory impact on neurite outgrowth, whereas Lsamp appears to be an enhancer of the said process as premature neuritogenesis in Ntm-/- neurons is apparent only in the presence of Lsamp. We also show interplay between Lsamp and Ntm in regulating tissue homeostasis: the impact of Ntm on cellular proliferation was dependent on Lsamp, and Lsamp appeared to be a positive regulator of apoptosis in the presence of Ntm. Behavioral phenotyping indicated test-specific interactions between Lsamp and Ntm. The phenotypes of single mutant lines, such as reduced swimming speed in Morris water maze and increased activity in the elevated plus maze, were magnified in Lsamp-/-Ntm-/- mice. Altogether, evidence both from behavioral experiments and cultured hippocampal cells show combined and differential interactions between Ntm and Lsamp in the formation of hippocampal circuits and behavioral profiles. We demonstrate that mutual interactions between IgLON molecules regulate the initiation of neurite sprouting at very early ages, and even cell-autonomously, independent of their regulation of cell-cell adhesion.

RESUMEN

This study was performed on hybrid aspen saplings growing at the Free Air Humidity Manipulation site in Estonia. We investigated changes in wood anatomy and hydraulic conductivity in response to increased air humidity. Two hydraulic traits (specific conductivity and leaf-specific conductivity) and four anatomical traits of stem wood-relative vessel area (VA), vessel density (VD), pit area and pit aperture area-were influenced by the humidity manipulation. Stem hydraulic traits decreased in the apical direction, whereas branch hydraulic characteristics tended to be greatest in mid-canopy, associated with branch size. A reduction in VD due to increasing humidity was accompanied by a decrease in vessel lumen diameter, hydraulically weighted mean diameter (Dh), xylem vulnerability index and theoretical hydraulic conductivity. VA and Dh combined accounted for 87.4% of the total variation in kt of branches and 85.5% of that in stems across the treatments. Characters of branch vessels were more stable, and only the vessel-grouping index (the ratio of the total number of vessels to the total number of vessel groupings) was dependent on the interactive effect of the treatment and canopy position. Our results indicate that the increasing atmospheric humidity predicted for high latitudes will result in moderate changes in the structure and functioning of the hybrid aspen xylem.

RESUMEN

Stomatal density and size were measured along the light gradient of a Betula pendula Roth. canopy in relation to microclimatic conditions. The theoretical stomatal conductance was calculated using stomatal density and dimensions to predict to what degree stomatal conductance is related to anatomical properties and relative stomatal opening. Stomatal density was higher and leaf area smaller in the upper canopy, whereas epidermal cell density did not change significantly along the canopy light gradient, indicating that stomatal initiation is responsible for differences in stomatal density. Stomatal dimensions - the length of guard cell on the dorsal side and the guard cell width - decreased with declining light availability. Maximum measured stomatal conductance and modelled stomatal conductance were higher at the top of the crown. The stomata operate closer to their maximum openness and stomatal morphology is a more important determinant of stomatal conductance in the top leaves than in leaves of lower canopy. As stomata usually limit photosynthesis more in upper than in lower canopy, it was concluded that stomatal morphology can principally be important for photosynthesis limitation in upper canopy.

RESUMEN

The arrangement of antennal sensilla was studied in female and male ground beetles Bembidion properans Steph. (Coleoptera, Carabidae) using scanning electron microscopy. The filiform antennae, 1.8-1.9 mm in length, consist of the scape, pedicel and nine flagellomeres. In both sexes, three types of sensilla chaetica, two types of sensilla trichodea, six types of sensilla basiconica, one type of sensilla coeloconica and one type of sensilla campaniformia were distinguished. The possible function of the sensilla is discussed and three types of sensilla are considered olfactory, sensilla trichodea type 2 and sensilla basiconica types 1 and 2. Olfactory sensilla form dorsal and/or ventral sensillar fields on the flagellomeres and occur sparsely or not at all outside these areas. No sexual differences in the types, number and distribution of antennal sensilla were found.
