RESUMEN

Optical biosensors based on micro/nanofibers are highly valuable for probing and monitoring liquid environments and bioactivity. Most current optical biosensors, however, are still based on glass, semiconductors, or metallic materials, which might not be fully suitable for biologically relevant environments. Here, we introduce biocompatible and flexible microfibers from lotus silk as microenvironmental monitors that exhibit waveguiding of intrinsic fluorescence as well as of coupled light. These features make single-filament monitors excellent building blocks for a variety of sensing functions, including pH probing and detection of bacterial activity. These results pave the way for the development of new and entirely eco-friendly, potentially multiplexed biosensing platforms.

BACKGROUND: Gene expression analysis can provide useful information for analyzing complex biological mechanisms. However, many reported findings are unrepeatable due to small sample sizes relative to a large number of genes and the low signal-to-noise ratios of most gene expression datasets. RESULTS: Meta-analysis of multi-data sets is an efficient method for tackling the above problem. To improve the performance of meta-analysis, we propose a novel meta-analysis framework. It consists of two parts: (1) a novel data augmentation strategy. Various cross-platform normalization methods exist, which can preserve original biological information of gene expression datasets from different angles and add different "perturbations" to the dataset. Using such perturbation, we provide a feasible means for gene expression data augmentation; (2) elastic data shared lasso (DSL-[Formula: see text]). The DSL-[Formula: see text] method spans the continuum between individual models for each dataset and one model for all datasets. It also overcomes the shortcomings of the data shared lasso method when dealing with highly correlated features. Comprehensive simulation experiment results show that the proposed method has high prediction and gene selection performance. We then apply the proposed method to non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) blood gene expression data in order to identify key tumor-related genes. The outcomes of our experiment indicate that the method could be used for identifying a set of robust disease-related gene signatures that may be used for NSCLC early diagnosis or prognosis or even targeting. CONCLUSION: We propose a novel and effective meta-analysis method for biological research, extrapolating and integrating information from multiple gene expression datasets.

Several observational studies on the association between Cd exposure and risk of prostate cancer have yielded inconsistent results. To address this issue, we conducted a meta-analysis to evaluate the correlation between Cd exposure and risk of prostate cancer.Relevant studies in PubMed and Embase databases were retrieved until October 2015. We compared the highest and lowest meta-analyses to quantitatively evaluate the relationship between Cd exposure and risk of prostate cancer. Summary estimates were obtained using a random-effects model.In the general population, high Cd exposure was not associated with increased prostate cancer (OR 1.21; 95% CI 0.91-1.64), whereas the combined standardized mortality ratio of the association between Cd exposure and risk of prostate cancer was 1.66 (95% CI 1.10-2.50) in populations exposed to occupational Cd. In addition, high D-Cd intake (OR 1.07; 95% CI 0.96-1.20) and U-Cd concentration (OR 0.86; 95% CI 0.48-1.55) among the general population was not related to the increased risk of prostate cancer. In the dose analysis, the summary relative risk was 1.07 (95% CI 0.73-1.57) for each 0.5 µg/g creatinine increase in U-Cd and 1.02 (95% CI 0.99-1.06) for each 10 µg/day increase of dietary Cd intake. However, compared with nonoccupational exposure, high occupational Cd exposure may be associated with the increased risk of prostate cancer.This meta-analysis suggests high Cd exposure as a risk factor for prostate cancer in occupational rather than nonoccupational populations. However, these results should be carefully interpreted because of the significant heterogeneity among studies. Additional large-scale and high-quality prospective studies are needed to confirm the association between Cd exposure and risk of prostate cancer.
