The study investigated the spatial variation of potential methane (CH4) oxidation and residual carbon dioxide (CO2) sequestration in biogeochemical cover (BGCC) system designed to remove CH4, CO2, and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) from landfill gas (LFG) emissions. A 50 cm x 50 cm x 100 cm tank simulated BGCC system, comprising a biochar-amended soil (BAS) layer for CH4 oxidation, a basic oxygen furnace (BOF) slag layer for CO2 and H2S sequestration, and an upper topsoil layer. Synthetic LFG was flushed through the system in five phases, with each corresponding to different compositions and flow rates. Following monitoring, the system was dismantled, and samples were extracted from different depths and locations to analyze spatial variations, focusing on moisture content (MC), organic content (OC), pH, and electrical conductivity (EC). Additionally, batch tests on selected samples from BAS and BOF slag layers were performed to assess potential CH4 oxidation and residual carbonation capacity. The aim of study was to evaluate the BGCC's effectiveness in LFG mitigation, however this study focused on assessing spatial variations in physico-chemical properties, CH4 oxidation in the BAS layer, and residual carbonation in the BOF slag layer. Findings revealed CH4 oxidation in the BAS layer varied between 22.4 and 277.9 µg CH4/g-day, with higher rates in the upper part, and significant spatial variations at 50 cm below ground surface (bgs) compared to 85 cm bgs. The BOF slag layer showed a residual carbonation capacity of 40-49.3 g CO2/kg slag, indicating non-uniform carbonation. Overall, CH4 oxidation and CO2 sequestration capacities varied spatially and with depth in the BGCC system.

INTRODUCTION: As access to effective antiretroviral therapy (ART) has improved globally, tobacco-related illnesses, including cardiovascular disease, cancer and chronic respiratory conditions, account for a growing proportion of deaths among people with HIV (PWH). We estimated the impact of tobacco smoking and smoking cessation on life expectancy among PWH in South Africa. METHODS: In a microsimulation model, we simulated 18 cohorts of PWH with virologic suppression, each homogenous by sex, initial age (35y/45y/55y) and smoking status (current/former/never). Input parameters were from data sources published between 2008 and 2022. We used South African data to estimate age-stratified mortality hazard ratios: 1.2-2.3 (females)/1.1-1.9 (males) for people with current versus never smoking status; and 1.0-1.3 (females)/1.0-1.5 (males) for people with former versus never smoking status, depending on age at cessation. We assumed smoking status remains unchanged during the simulation; people who formerly smoked quit at model start. Simulated PWH face a monthly probability of disengagement from care and virologic non-suppression. In sensitivity analysis, we varied smoking-associated and HIV-associated mortality risks. Additionally, we estimated the total life-years gained if a proportion of all virologically suppressed PWH stopped smoking. RESULTS: Forty-five-year-old females/males with HIV with virologic suppression who smoke lose 5.3/3.7 life-years compared to PWH who never smoke. Smoking cessation at age 45y adds 3.4/2.4 life-years. Simulated PWH who continue smoking lose more life-years from smoking than from HIV (females, 5.3 vs. 3.0 life-years; males, 3.7 vs. 2.6 life-years). The impact of smoking and smoking cessation increase as smoking-associated mortality risks increase and HIV-associated mortality risks, including disengagement from care, decrease. Model results are most sensitive to the smoking-associated mortality hazard ratio; varying this parameter results in 1.0-5.1 life-years gained from cessation at age 45y. If 10-25% of virologically suppressed PWH aged 30-59y in South Africa stopped smoking now, 190,000-460,000 life-years would be gained. CONCLUSIONS: Among virologically suppressed PWH in South Africa, tobacco smoking decreases life expectancy more than HIV. Integrating tobacco cessation interventions into HIV care, as endorsed by the World Health Organization, could substantially improve life expectancy.

This study critically appraises employing chitosan as a composite with bentonite, biochar, or both materials as an alternative to conventional barrier materials. A comprehensive literature review was conducted to identify the studies reporting chitosan-bentonite composite (CBC), chitosan amended biochar (CAB), and chitosan-bentonite-biochar composite (CBBC) for effective removal of various contaminants. The study aims to review the synthesis of these composites, identify fundamental properties affecting their adsorption capacities, and examine how these properties affect or enhance the removal abilities of other materials within the composite. Notably, CBC composites have the advantage of adsorbing both cationic and anionic species, such as heavy metals and dyes, due to the cationic nature of chitosan and the anionic nature of montmorillonite, along with the increased accessible surface area due to the clay. CAB composites have the unique advantage of being low-cost sorbents with high specific surface area, affinity for a wide range of contaminants owing to the high surface area and microporosity of biochar, and abundant available functional groups from the chitosan. Limited studies have reported the utilization of CBBC composites to remove various contaminants. These composites can be prepared by combining the steps employed in preparing CBC and CAB composites. They can benefit from the favorable adsorption properties of all three materials while also satisfying the mechanical requirements of a barrier material. This study serves as a knowledge base for future research to develop novel composite barrier materials by incorporating chitosan and biochar as amendments to bentonite.

Clay-amended barriers are widely used to prevent hazardous leachate percolation from landfill to subsurface. The performance of these barriers is mostly evaluated through numerical simulations with limited experimental investigation through leachate flushing experiments. To bridge this gap, contaminant loading and its flushing experiments were carried out to assess the performance of clay-amended composite materials as landfill liners. River sand (Sa), loamy soil (Ns), and alternative waste materials like fly ash (Fa) and flushed silt (Si) were used to prepare the composites. Composites fulfilling the hydraulic conductivity (<10-7 cm/s) and compressive strength (200 kPa) criteria were selected for contaminant loading and its flushing experiments to understand the fate of fluoride ions. The experimentally determined hydraulic conductivity (Ks) values for all the composites were in the order of 10-8 cm/s. The experimental breakthrough curves exhibited skewed shape, long tailing, and dual peaks. Dual porosity and dual permeability with immobile water models were employed to simulate these curves, revealing that preferential flow pathways and random chemical sorption sites significantly affect solute transport in clay-amended barriers. Further, scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were employed to trace the preferred path of fluoride ions through the barrier. The removal efficiency and temporal moments were used to determine the percentage mass retained, mean arrival time, and spreading within the barrier. The highest solute mass was retained by sand-clay barrier (SaB30) (91%), followed by loam-clay barrier (NsB30) (59%), fly ash-clay barrier (FaB30) (38%), and silt-clay barrier (SiB30) (4%) with the least mass. The lowest mean arrival time was calculated for NsB30 (269 h) and the highest for SaB30 (990 h), with FaB30 (384 h) and SiB30 (512 h) having values in between. This study concludes that validating the design hypothesis of clay-amended barriers through contaminant loading and its flushing studies leads to an effective and sustainable design.

OBJECTIVE: Almost 400 000 people with HIV (PWH) in the United States are over age 55 years and at risk for age-associated dementias (AAD), including Alzheimer's disease and vascular contributions to cognitive impairment and dementia (VCID). We projected the cumulative incidence and mortality associated with AAD among PWH at least 60 years in the United States compared with the general population. DESIGN/METHODS: Integrating the CEPAC and AgeD-Pol models, we simulated two cohorts of 60-year-old male and female individuals: PWH, and the general US population. We estimated AAD incidence and AAD-associated mortality rates. Projected outcomes included AAD cumulative incidence, life expectancy, and quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs). We performed sensitivity and scenario analyses on AAD-specific (e.g. incidence) and HIV-specific (e.g. disengagement from HIV care) parameters, as well as premature aging among PWH. RESULTS: We projected that 22.1%/16.3% of 60-year-old male individuals/female individuals with HIV would develop AAD by 80 years compared with 15.9%/13.3% of male individuals/female individuals in the general population. Accounting for age-associated and dementia-associated quality of life, 60-year-old PWH would have a lower life expectancy (QALYs): 17.4 years (14.1 QALYs) and 16.8 years (13.4 QALYs) for male and female individuals, respectively, compared with the general population [male individuals, 21.7 years (18.4 QALYs); female individuals, 24.7 years (20.2 QALYs)]. AAD cumulative incidence was most sensitive to non-HIV-related mortality, engagement in HIV care, and AAD incidence rates. CONCLUSION: Projected estimates of AAD-associated morbidity, mortality, and quality of life can inform decision-makers and health systems planning as the population of PWH ages. Improved AAD prevention, treatment, and supportive care planning are critical for people aging with HIV.

Secondary active membrane transporters harness the energy of ion gradients to concentrate their substrates. Homologous transporters evolved to couple transport to different ions in response to changing environments and needs. The bases of such diversification, and thus principles of ion coupling, are unexplored. Employing phylogenetics and ancestral protein reconstruction, we investigated sodium-coupled transport in prokaryotic glutamate transporters, a mechanism ubiquitous across life domains and critical to neurotransmitter recycling in humans. We found that the evolutionary transition from sodium-dependent to independent substrate binding to the transporter preceded changes in the coupling mechanism. Structural and functional experiments suggest that the transition entailed allosteric mutations, making sodium binding dispensable without affecting ion-binding sites. Allosteric tuning of transporters' energy landscapes might be a widespread route of their functional diversification.

Importance: Substantial racial inequities exist across the HIV care continuum between non-Hispanic Black and White men who have sex with men (MSM) in the US. Objectives: To project years of life gained (YLG) with improving the HIV care continuum among Black MSM and White MSM in the US and to determine the outcomes of achieving health equity goals. Design, Setting, and Participants: The Cost-Effectiveness of Preventing AIDS Complications microsimulation model was used and populated with 2021 race-specific data to simulate HIV care among Black MSM and White MSM in the US who have acquired HIV. Analyses were completed from July 2021 to October 2023. Intervention: The study simulated status quo care using race-specific estimates: age at infection, time to diagnosis, receipt of care, and virologic suppression. The study next projected the outcomes of attaining equity-centered vs non-equity-centered goals by simulating 2 equal improvements in care goals: (10-point increased receipt of care and 5-point increased virologic suppression), 3 equity-centered goals (annual HIV testing, 95% receiving HIV care, and 95% virologic suppression) and lastly, an equitable care continuum that achieves annual HIV testing, 95% receiving care, and 95% virologic suppression in Black MSM and White MSM. One-way and multiway sensitivity and scenario analyses were conducted. Main Outcomes and Measures: Mean age at death and YLG. Results: In the simulated cohort, the mean (SD) age at HIV infection was 27.0 (10.8) years for Black MSM and 35.5 (13.6) years for White MSM. In status quo, mean age at death would be 68.8 years for Black MSM and 75.6 years for White MSM. The equal improvements in care goals would result in 0.5 YLG for Black MSM and 0.5 to 0.9 YLG for White MSM. Achieving any 1 equity-centered goal would result in 0.5 to 1.7 YLG for Black MSM and 0.4 to 1.3 YLG for White MSM. With an equitable care continuum compared with the nationally reported status quo, Black MSM and White MSM would gain 3.5 and 2.1 life-years, respectively. If the status quo HIV testing was every 6 years with 75% retained in care and 75% virologically suppressed, Black MSM would gain 4.2 life-years with an equitable care continuum. Conclusions and Relevance: In this simulation modeling study of HIV care goals, equal improvements in HIV care for Black and White MSM maintained or worsened inequities. These results suggest that equity-centered goals for the HIV care continuum are critical to mitigate long-standing inequities in HIV outcomes.

Corn seedling emergence is a critical factor affecting crop yields. Accurately predicting emergence is crucial for precise crop growth and development simulation in process-based crop models. While various experimental studies have investigated the relationship between corn seedling emergence and temperature, there remains a scarcity of studies focused on newer corn hybrids. In the present study, statistical models (linear and quadratic functional relationships) are developed based on the seedling emergence of ten current corn hybrids, considering soil and air temperatures as influencing factors. The data used for model development are obtained from controlled soil plant atmospheric research chamber experiments focused on corn seedling emergence at five different temperatures. Upon evaluating the developed models, the quadratic model relating the air temperature with time to emergence was found more accurate for all corn hybrids (coefficient of determination (R2): 0.97, root mean square error (RMSE): 0.42 day) followed by the quadratic model based on soil temperature (R2: 0.96, RMSE: 1.42 days), linear model based on air (R2: 0.94, RMSE: 0.53 day) and soil temperature (R2: 0.94, RMSE: 0.70 day). A growing degree day (GDD)-based model was also developed for the newer hybrids. When comparing the developed GDD-based model with the existing GDD models (based on old hybrids), it was observed that the GDD required for emergence was 16% higher than the GDD used in the current models. This showed that the existing GDD-based models need to be revisited when adopted for newer hybrids and adapted to corn crop simulation models. The developed seedling emergence model, integrated into a process-based corn crop simulation model, can benefit farmers and researchers in corn crop management. It can aid in optimizing planting schedules, supporting management decisions, and predicting corn crop growth, development, and it yields more accurately.

The growing number of contaminated sites across the world pose a considerable threat to the environment and human health. Remediating such sites is a cumbersome process with the complexity originating from the need for extensive sampling and testing during site characterization. Selection and design of remediation technology is further complicated by the uncertainties surrounding contaminant attributes, concentration, as well as soil and groundwater properties, which influence the remediation efficiency. Additionally, challenges emerge in identifying contamination sources and monitoring the affected area. Often, these problems are overly simplified, and the data gathered is underutilized rendering the remediation process inefficient. The potential of artificial intelligence (AI), machine-learning (ML), and deep-learning (DL) to address these issues is noteworthy, as their emergence revolutionized the process of data management/analysis. Researchers across the world are increasingly leveraging AI/ML/DL to address remediation challenges. Current study aims to perform a comprehensive literature review on the integration of AI/ML/DL tools into contaminated site remediation. A brief introduction to various emerging and existing AI/ML/DL technologies is presented, followed by a comprehensive literature review. In essence, ML/DL based predictive models can facilitate a thorough understanding of contamination patterns, reducing the need for extensive soil and groundwater sampling. Additionally, AI/ML/DL algorithms can play a pivotal role in identifying optimal remediation strategies by analyzing historical data, simulating scenarios through surrogate models, parameter-optimization using nature inspired algorithms, and enhancing decision-making with AI-based tools. Overall, with supportive measures like open-data policies and data integration, AI/ML/DL possess the potential to revolutionize the practice of contaminated site remediation.

Climate change poses a significant threat to agriculture. However, climatic trends and their impact on Mississippi (MS) maize (Zea mays L.) are unknown. The objectives were to: (i) analyze trends in climatic variables (1970 to 2020) using Mann-Kendall and Sen slope method, (ii) quantify the impact of climate change on maize yield in short and long run using the auto-regressive distributive lag (ARDL) model, and (iii) categorize the critical months for maize-climate link using Pearson's correlation matrix. The climatic variables considered were maximum temperature (Tmax), minimum temperature (Tmin), diurnal temperature range (DTR), precipitation (PT), relative humidity (RH), and carbon emissions (CO2). The pre-analysis, post-analysis, and model robustness statistical tests were verified, and all conditions were met. A significant upward trend in Tmax (0.13 °C/decade), Tmin (0.27 °C/decade), and CO2 (5.1 units/decade), and a downward trend in DTR ( - 0.15 °C/decade) were noted. The PT and RH insignificantly increased by 4.32 mm and 0.11% per decade, respectively. The ARDL model explained 76.6% of the total variations in maize yield. Notably, the maize yield had a negative correlation with Tmax for June, and July, with PT in August, and with DTR for June, July, and August, whereas a positive correlation was noted with Tmin in June, July, and August. Overall, a unit change in Tmax reduced the maize yield by 7.39% and 26.33%, and a unit change in PT reduced it by 0.65% and 2.69% in the short and long run, respectively. However, a unit change in Tmin, and CO2 emissions increased maize yield by 20.68% and 0.63% in the long run with no short run effect. Overall, it is imperative to reassess the agronomic management strategies, developing and testing cultivars adaptable to the revealed climatic trend, with ability to withstand severe weather conditions in ensuring sustainable maize production.

Studying historical response of crops to weather conditions at a finer scale is essential for devising agricultural strategies tailored to expected climate changes. However, determining the relationship between crop and climate in Mississippi (MS) remains elusive. Therefore, this research attempted to i) estimate climate trends between 1970 and 2020 in MS during the soybean growing season (SGS) using the Mann-Kendall and Sen slope method, ii) calculate the impact of climate change on soybean yield using an auto-regressive distributive lag (ARDL) econometric model, and iii) identify the most critical months from a crop-climate perspective by generating a correlation between the detrended yield and the monthly average for each climatic variable. Specific variables considered were maximum temperature (Tmax), minimum temperature (Tmin), diurnal temperature range (DTR), precipitation (PT), carbon dioxide emissions (CO2), and relative humidity (RH). All required diagnostic-tests i.e., pre-analysis, post-analysis, model-sensitivity, and assessing the models' goodness-of-fit were performed and statistical standards were met. A positive trend in Tmin (+0.25 °C/decade), and a negative trend in DTR (-0.18 °C/decade) was found. Although Tmax, PT, and RH showed non-significant trends, numerical changes were noted as +0.11 °C/decade, +3.03 mm/decade, and -0.06 %/decade, respectively. Furthermore, soybean yield was positively correlated with Tmin (in June and September), PT (in July and August), and RH (in July), but negatively correlated with Tmax (in July and August) and DTR (in June, July, and August). Soybean yield was observed to be significantly reduced by 18.11 % over the long-term and by 5.51 % over the short-term for every 1 °C increase in Tmax. With every unit increase in Tmin and CO2 emissions, the yield of soybeans increased significantly by 7.76 % and 3.04 %, respectively. Altogether, soybeans in MS exhibited variable sensitivity to short- and long-terms climatic changes. The results highlight the importance of testing climate-resilient agronomic practices and cultivars that encompass asymmetric sensitivities in response to climatic conditions of MS.

Objectives. Conventional value-of-information (VOI) analysis assumes complete uptake of an optimal decision. We employed an extended framework that includes value-of-implementation (VOM)-the benefit of encouraging adoption of an optimal strategy-and estimated how future trials of diagnostic tests for HIV-associated tuberculosis could improve public health decision making and clinical and economic outcomes. Methods. We evaluated the clinical outcomes and costs, given current information, of 3 tuberculosis screening strategies among hospitalized people with HIV in South Africa: sputum Xpert (Xpert), sputum Xpert plus urine AlereLAM (Xpert+AlereLAM), and sputum Xpert plus the newer, more sensitive, and costlier urine FujiLAM (Xpert+FujiLAM). We projected the incremental net monetary benefit (INMB) of decision making based on results of a trial comparing mortality with each strategy, rather than decision making based solely on current knowledge of FujiLAM's improved diagnostic performance. We used a validated microsimulation to estimate VOI (the INMB of reducing parameter uncertainty before decision making) and VOM (the INMB of encouraging adoption of an optimal strategy). Results. With current information, adopting Xpert+FujiLAM yields 0.4 additional life-years/person compared with current practices (assumed 50% Xpert and 50% Xpert+AlereLAM). While the decision to adopt this optimal strategy is unaffected by information from the clinical trial (VOI = $ 0 at $3,000/year-of-life saved willingness-to-pay threshold), there is value in scaling up implementation of Xpert+FujiLAM, which results in an INMB (representing VOM) of $650 million over 5 y. Conclusions. Conventional VOI methods account for the value of switching to a new optimal strategy based on trial data but fail to account for the persuasive value of trials in increasing uptake of the optimal strategy. Evaluation of trials should include a focus on their value in reducing barriers to implementation. Highlights: In conventional VOI analysis, it is assumed that the optimal decision will always be adopted even without a trial. This can potentially lead to an underestimation of the value of trials when adoption requires new clinical trial evidence. To capture the influence that a trial may have on decision makers' willingness to adopt the optimal decision, we also consider value-of-implementation (VOM), a metric quantifying the benefit of new study information in promoting wider adoption of the optimal strategy. The overall value-of-a-trial (VOT) includes both VOI and VOM.Our model-based analysis suggests that the information obtained from a trial of screening strategies for HIV-associated tuberculosis in South Africa would have no value, when measured using traditional methods of VOI assessment. A novel strategy, which includes the urine FujiLAM test, is optimal from a health economic standpoint but is underutilized. A trial would reduce uncertainties around downstream health outcomes but likely would not change the optimal decision. The high VOT (nearly $700 million over 5 y) lies solely in promoting uptake of FujiLAM, represented as VOM.Our results highlight the importance of employing a more comprehensive approach for evaluating prospective trials, as conventional VOI methods can vastly underestimate their value. Trialists and funders can and should assess the VOT metric instead when considering trial designs and costs. If VOI is low, the VOM and cost of a trial can be compared with the benefits and costs of other outreach programs to determine the most cost-effective way to improve uptake.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Post-operative Hypocalcaemia is the most-common complication of total and near-total thyroidectomy which is a selective treatment for benign and malignant thyroid diseases. Incidence ranges from 0.5-50%. OBJECTIVES: The role of vitamin-D and Parathyroid hormone(PTH) in incidence of Hypocalcemia after thyroidectomy has been taken into consideration. METHODS: This is a prospective interventional study is conducted in Kasturba Medical College and hospital, Manipal after taking written informed consent from the participants. It aimed at surveying the serum level of preoperative Vitamin D, PTH and calcium before total-thyroidectomy surgery and its relationship with the incidence of postoperative hypocalcemia after the surgery. The study was done on 70 patients who were-planned for total/near total thyroidectomy. Preoperative Vitamin D, PTH, calcium and Postoperative 4 hours-PTH, Calcium were measured on POD-1, POD-2-4, the results obtained were then analysed. RESULTS:  Considering the cut-off of calcium as 8.6mg/dl, 42 patients developed hypocalcemia on POD-1, 28 patients on POD-2. Preoperative calcium and postoperative PTH levels in people having hypocalcaemia where significantly less compared to the patients having normal calcium. 4-hours post-operative PTH measurements showed 51% sensitivity, 100% specificity and strong co-relation between postoperative hypocalcemia and drop in PTH levels- (p=<0.001). Out of 42 patients who developed hypocalcemia 28- (65%) patients had vitamin-D deficiency(p=0.5) on POD-1 and out of 51 patients with hypocalcemia on POD 2-4, 33(78%) had-vitamin-D-deficiency(p=0.3852). Which was not statically significant. CONCLUSION: 4 hours post-operative PTH level is a predictor of early postoperative hypocalcemia, by detecting this we can effectively manage postoperative hypocalcemia.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate associations between all-cause mortality and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) acquisition risk groups among people without HIV in the United States. METHODS: We used data from 23,657 (NHANES) participants (2001-2014) and the Linked Mortality File to classify individuals without known HIV into HIV acquisition risk groups: people who ever injected drugs (ever-PWID); men who have sex with men (MSM); heterosexually active people at increased risk for HIV (HIH), using low income as a proxy for increased risk. We used Cox proportional hazards models to estimate adjusted and unadjusted all-cause mortality hazard ratios (HR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). RESULTS: Compared with sex-specific heterosexually active people at average risk for HIV (HAH), the adjusted HR (95% CI) were: male ever-PWID 1.67 (1.14, 2.46), female ever-PWID 3.50 (2.04, 6.01), MSM 1.51 (1.00, 2.27), male HIH 1.68 (1.04, 2.06), female HIH 2.35 (1.87, 2.95), and male ever-PWID 1.67 (1.14, 2.46). CONCLUSIONS: Most people at increased risk for HIV in the US experience higher all-cause mortality than people at average risk. Strategies addressing social determinants that increase HIV risk should be incorporated into HIV prevention and other health promotion programs.

Optimizing soil health through soil amendments is a promising strategy for enhancing rainwater efficiency for stabilizing crop production. Biochar, obtained by torrefaction of sugarcane bagasse, a byproduct from sugar mills, has a high potential for its use as a soil amendment, which can boost crop yields, but needs further field trials for its adoption in farming systems. A field study was conducted during 2019-2021 at Stoneville, Mississippi, to assess rainfed cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) production under four biochar levels (0, 10, 20, and 40 t ha-1) on Dundee silt loam soil. The effects of biochar on cotton growth and lint yield and quality were examined. Biochar levels had no significant impact on cotton lint and seed yield for the first two years. Still, in the third year, a significant increase in lint yield by 13 and 21.7% was recorded at 20 and 40 t ha-1 biochar levels, respectively. In the third year, lint yields were 1523, 1586, 1721, and 1854 kg ha-1 at 0, 10, 20 and 40 t ha-1 biochar levels, respectively. Similarly, cotton seed yield increased by 10.8% and 13.4% in 20 and 40 t ha-1 biochar plots. This study demonstrated that successive biochar applications at 20 or 40 t ha-1 can enhance cotton lint and seed yields under rainfed conditions. These improved yields with biochar did not produce increased net returns due to the increased production costs. Many lint quality parameters were unaffected except for micronaire, fiber strength and fiber length. However, potential long-term benefits of enhanced cotton production from biochar application beyond the length of the study merit further investigation. Additionally, biochar application is more relevant when accrued carbon credits through carbon sequestration outweigh the increased production costs due to biochar application.

Vascular injuries during pituitary surgery are feared as they can lead to serious disability and can be life threatening. We are describing a case of severe intractable epistaxis following endoscopic transnasal transsphenoidal surgery for pituitary tumour due to a sphenopalatine artery pseudoaneurysm which was successfully managed using endovascular embolisation techniques. Very few cases of sphenopalatine artery pseudoaneurysm following endoscopic nasal surgery have been described. A middle aged male patient with a pituitary macroadenoma underwent endoscopic transsphenoidal pituitary surgery and returned to us after 3 days of discharge with severe epistaxis. Digital subtraction angiography showed contrast leakage and left sphenopalatine artery pseudoaneurysm. Glue embolisation of the distal sphenopalatine branches and pseudoaneurysm was done. Good occlusion of pseudoaneurysm was seen. Such a diagnosis for epistaxis following endoscopic transnasal surgery should be borne in mind, so prompt treatment can be planned to avoid life threatening complications.

The active and abandoned coalmine overburden (OB) dumps are prone to slope instability under the influence of external agents. Estimating the mechanical reinforcement imparted by the grassroots on the coalmine overburden dumps is vital. This paper discusses the effect of organic amendment on the growth characteristics and root distribution of native grass Dendrocalamus strictus species (common name: Bamboo) in the Jharkhand region, India. A pot experiment was conducted wherein the OB was amended with different proportions of cow dung (OA) and garden soil (GS) to be used as growth substrates known as treatments (T1-T5). A pot having only GS (T6) was used as a control. The growth of six D. strictus saplings under each treatment was monitored for survival, shoot height, and canopy area. The root distribution, root area ratio (RAR) with depth, root tensile strength (Tr) vs. root diameter (d) relationship, and variation of additional cohesion (root cohesion, cr) with depth were studied for each species (Wu method). The pot experiment shows that the chosen grass can survive on the OB dumps with a suitable external amendment and can exhibit a well-developed root system and produce higher root reinforcement when allowed to grow under unrestricted conditions.

Background: South Africa is facing a convergence of communicable diseases (CDs) and non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The contribution of tobacco use to the burden of these conditions is unknown. Methods: We analyzed the associations between current tobacco smoking and four important CDs and NCDs in Vukuzazi, a cross-sectional study of individuals aged 15 years and older conducted between 2018-2020 in a demographic surveillance area in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Data on HIV, active tuberculosis (TB), hypertension and diabetes mellitus were collected via direct measurement from participants. Results: Of 18,024 participants (68% female, median age 37 years [interquartile rage 23-56 years]), 1,301 (7.2%) reported current smoking. Prevalence of HIV infection was similarly high among people who currently smoked (34.6%) and people who had never smoked (33.9%). However, among people living with HIV (PLWH), there was a higher prevalence of detectable viremia in people reporting current smoking compared to people who reported never smoking (28.8% vs. 16.6%; p-value < 0.001). Active TB was more prevalent in people who currently smoked than in people who never smoked (3.1% vs 1.3%, p < 0.001). In contrast, the prevalence of hypertension and diabetes mellitus were lower in people reporting current smoking than in people reporting never smoking (17.1% vs 26.0% (p < 0.001), and 2.5% vs 10.2% (p < 0.001), respectively). In sex-stratified multivariable analyses that were adjusted for potential confounding factors (including body mass index for the NCDs), the magnitude of differences in CD prevalence between people who currently smoked and people who never smoked decreased, whereas the lower prevalence of NCDs among people reporting current smoking persisted. Conclusions: In rural South Africa, smoking is associated with higher rates of active TB, and people with HIV who smoke have worse disease control. In contrast, hypertension and diabetes mellitus are less common in those who smoke. Interventions to screen for TB among those who smoke and to address smoking among people with HIV may be particularly impactful.

Reducing methane emissions and water use is critical for combating climate change and declining aquifers on food production. Reductions in irrigation water use and methane emissions are known benefits of practicing alternate wetting and drying (AWD) over continuous flooding (CF) water management in lowland rice (Oryza sativa L.) production systems. In a two-year (2020 and 2021) study, methane emissions from large farm-scale (∼50 ha) rice fields managed under CF and AWD in soils dominated by Sharkey clay (Sharkey clay, clay over loamy, montmorillonitic non-acid, thermic Vertic halauepet) were monitored using the eddy covariance method (EC). In the EC system, an open-path laser gas analyzer was used to monitor air methane gas density in the constant flux layer of the atmosphere over the rice-crop canopies. Total water pumped into the field for floodwater management was higher in CF compared to AWD by 24 and 14% in 2020 and 2021, respectively. Considerable variations between seasons in the amount of methane emitted from the CF and AWD treatments were observed: CF emitted 29 and 75 kg ha-1 and AWD emitted 14 and 34 kg ha-1 methane in 2020 and 2021, respectively. Notwithstanding, the extent of reduction in methane emissions due to AWD over CF was similar for each crop season (52% in 2020 and 55% in 2021). Rice grain yield harvested differed by only ±2% between AWD and CF. This investigation of large-scale system-level evaluation, using the EC method, confirmed that by practicing AWD floodwater management in rice, water pumped from aquifers could be reduced by about a quarter and methane emissions from rice fields could be cut down by about half without affecting grain yields, thereby promoting sustainable water management and greenhouse gas emission reduction during rice production in the Lower Mississippi Delta.

Limited chemical shift dispersion represents a significant barrier to studying multistate equilibria of large membrane proteins by 19F NMR. We describe a novel monofluoroethyl 19F probe that dramatically increases the chemical shift dispersion. The improved conformational sensitivity and line shape enable the detection of previously unresolved states in one-dimensional (1D) 19F NMR spectra of a 134 kDa membrane transporter. Changes in the populations of these states in response to ligand binding, mutations, and temperature correlate with population changes of distinct conformations in structural ensembles determined by single-particle cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM). Thus, 19F NMR can guide sample preparation to discover and visualize novel conformational states and facilitate image analysis and three-dimensional (3D) classification.
