RESUMEN

In this paper we present numerical and experimental results revealing that the mode instability threshold of highly Yb-doped, Ce/Al co-doped pedestal fibers is affected by the size of the index-increased pedestal structure surrounding the core. An alternative preparation technology for the realization of large mode area fibers with very large Al-doped silica pedestals is introduced. Three different pedestal fiber design iterations characterized by low photodarkening were manufactured and tested in counter-pumped amplifier setups. Up to 1.9 kW continuous-wave output power of near-diffraction-limited beam quality (M2 = 1.26) was achieved with an 18/200/420 µm fiber of very low NA = 0.042, limited only by the occurrence of mode instabilities.

RESUMEN

We report on a 9.2-W cw, two-times diffraction-limited, neodymium-doped fiber laser operating in the 1.06-microm region. For a silica-based double-clad fiber, slope efficiencies of more than 25% are observed for pumping by a diode-laser system operating near 810 nm.

RESUMEN

Comparative ventricular measurements were made on 43 small children and infants between the ages of 0 and 3 years, the methods used being those of pneumoencephalography and enchoventriculography. The number of cases that could be analyzed was 31. Good agreement of the results for the third ventricle was obtained in 64.5 per cent and for the lateral ventricular index, in 80.6 per cent of the cases. More or less satisfactory agreement of the two methods provides against making a clear decision in favor of one or the other method. Good agreement was observed between the results of repeated echoventriculographic examinations on 31 normal children. From these results as well as from th results of echographic examination on hydrocephalic children it can be concluded that echoventriculography is a reliable method of diagnosis even in those cases in which it is routinely applied to both inpatients and outpatients.
