RESUMEN

The yellow clam is a sand-burrowing bivalve that inhabits the dissipative beaches from southern Brazil to the north coast of Argentina. In the last decades, populations of this species have been impacted by mass mortality events, overfishing and other anthropogenic activities. The production of juveniles in captivity would allow feasibility studies to be carried out to restore the natural stock as well as the production in aquaculture systems. Given the scarcity of studies on the maintenance of this species in captivity, a culture system and a management protocol were developed and tested. Wild-caught clams (total length ≥50 mm) were used in a series of 14 day-long trials. Survival was higher in clams that were allowed to bury into the sand. A permanent ink marker covered with a thin layer of a quick-hardening adhesive proved to be a reliable method to tag clams. The maintenance of yellow clams in this system resulted in high survival and growth, increases in the condition factor and oocyte diameter, and a relative advancement of gonadal development.

Primary aldosteronism is nowadays considered the cause of 8 to 12 % cases of hypertension. The increase in its prevalence is due to changes in diagnostic criteria. Initial screening is performed in the laboratory by obtaining the aldosterone to plasma renin activity ratio, for which strict preanalytical conditions are required, including; supine or upright posture; interaction of therapeutic drugs which may alter results; sample extraction and conservation, among others. Given the high variability in the measurement of plasma renin activity and its complexity (RIA), the use of the aldosterone to renin concentration ratio is proposed (where renin concentration is determined by an automated immunoassay), although no consensus has been reached in this matter. The screening method is essential to primarily identify those patients who should be further studied, and it influences the statistics on actual prevalence of primary aldosteronism. Once cutoff values have been determined for each laboratory, patients with positive screening results must be further submitted for confirmation tests, such as salt-loading test or fludrocortisone suppression test, in which the autonomous secretion of aldosterone is confirmed. Then, the cause of the excessive aldosterone production must be determined. The most common are aldosterone producing adenoma and bilateral adrenal hyperplasia. Early diagnosis allows for the correct treatment, minimizing comorbidities caused by hypertension and by vascular and cardiac remodelation due to the excess of aldosterone. Classic treatment for hypertension is not always useful in patients with primary aldosteronism; this is why it is important to know how to diagnose the underlying pathology.

The coronary lesions have been reported in species of anadromous fish with similar characteristics as those observed in human atherosclerosis, but not in farmed fish without interference of reproductive patterns. This study aimed to describe coronary lesions in beijupirá (Rachycentron canadum) farmed in an offshore system, in 54 specimens collected along an eight month cultivation period. Samples of heart tissue of fry and juveniles were subjected to histopathological analysis and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) for visualization of coronary lesions, the histology slides were stained using hematoxylin-eosin, periodic acid Schiffh, alcian blue, and reticulin of Gomori. Examinations performed by light microscopy showed arterial lesions characterized by hyperplasia of the intima and media tunics, respectively in 29.63% and 79.63 % of the animals, with reduced lumen. In TEM changes in the structure of the coronary endothelium and thickening of the basement membrane, proliferation of fibroblasts and collagen fibers, with subendothelial accumulation of lipid material, cellular debris adhering to the basement membrane and presence of pinocytotics vesicles and isolated lysosomes were observed. It has been found that the Rachycentron canadum fish species farmed in captivity develop arterial lesion of the chronic inflammatory degenerative type.

RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to determine the lethal salinity (LC50) for the yellow clam Mesodesma mactroides (Bivalvia: Mesodesmatidae) and identify histopathological alterations that could be used to diagnose structural changes in clam tissue. Clams in two size classes (adults and juveniles) were placed in 10 L chambers and exposed to salinities of 35, 30, 25, 20, 15, 10, and 5 g/L. There were triplicate chambers with seven clams each for each salinity. The LC50 values for a 48 h exposure were 6.5 g/L and 5.7 g/L for adults and juveniles, respectively. For a 96 h exposure, the LC50 values were 10.5 g/L for adults and 8.8 g/L for juveniles. The histological examination of yellow clams exposed to 10 g/L for 96 h showed intercellular oedema and necrotic foci in the epithelium of the digestive gland and occlusion of the lumen of the digestive gland. In conclusion, M. mactroides can be characterised as a moderately euryhaline species, tolerating salinities from 35 to 15 g/L.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Early-onset dementia (EOD) is defined as dementia with onset before the age of 65 years. EOD is increasingly recognised as an important clinical and social problem with devastating consequences for patients and caregivers. OBJECTIVE: Determine the annual crude incidence rate and the specific incidence rates by sex and age in patients with EOD, and the standardised rate using the last national census of the population of Argentina (NCPA), from 2010. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Hospital Privado de Comunidad, Mar del Plata, Argentina, attends a closed population and is the sole healthcare provider for 17 614 people. Using the database pertaining to the Geriatric Care department, we identified all patients diagnosed with EOD between 1 January, 2005 and 31 December, 2011. EOD was defined as dementia diagnosed in patients younger than 65. RESULTS: The study period yielded 14 patients diagnosed with EOD out of a total of 287 patients evaluated for memory concerns. The crude annual incidence of EOD was 11 per 100 000/year (CI 95%: 6.25-19.1): 17 per 100 000 (CI 95%: 7.2-33.1) in men and 8 per 100 000 (CI 95%: 3.4-17.2) in women. We observed a statistically significant increase when comparing incidence rates between patients aged 21 to <55 years and ≥ 55 to <65 years (3 vs 22 per 100 000, P=.0014). The rate adjusted by NCPA census data was 5.8 cases of EOD habitants/year. CONCLUSION: This study, conducted in a closed population, yielded an EOD incidence rate of 11 per 100 000 inhabitants/year. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first prospective epidemiological study in Argentina and in Latin America.

RESUMEN

Blue whales (Balaenoptera musculus) were among the most intensively exploited species of whales in the world. As a consequence of this intense exploitation, blue whale sightings off the coast of Chile were uncommon by the end of the 20th century. In 2004, a feeding and nursing ground was reported in southern Chile (SCh). With the aim to investigate the genetic identity and relationship of these Chilean blue whales to those in other Southern Hemisphere areas, 60 biopsy samples were collected from blue whales in SCh between 2003 and 2009. These samples were genotyped at seven microsatellite loci and the mitochondrial control region was sequenced, allowing us to identify 52 individuals. To investigate the genetic identity of this suspected remnant population, we compared these 52 individuals to blue whales from Antarctica (ANT, n = 96), Northern Chile (NCh, n = 19) and the eastern tropical Pacific (ETP, n = 31). No significant differentiation in haplotype frequencies (mtDNA) or among genotypes (nDNA) was found between SCh, NCh and ETP, while significant differences were found between those three areas and Antarctica for both the mitochondrial and microsatellite analyses. Our results suggest at least two breeding population units or subspecies exist, which is also supported by other lines of evidence such as morphometrics and acoustics. The lack of differences detected between SCh/NCh/ETP areas supports the hypothesis that eastern South Pacific blue whales are using the ETP area as a possible breeding area. Considering the small population sizes previously reported for the SCh area, additional conservation measures and monitoring of this population should be developed and prioritized.

RESUMEN

Lipoic acid (LA) is a disulfide-containing compound derived from octanoic acid that is synthesized in mitochondria. This molecule acts as a co-factor for mitochondrial enzymes that catalyze oxidative decarboxylation reactions. Several antioxidant properties of LA enable it to be considered as an "ideal antioxidant", having diverse benefits that allow it to deal with environmental or biological stress. Some of the effects induced by LA in aquatic organisms render it suitable for use in aquaculture. However, it is necessary to determine the appropriate dose(s) to be used with different species and even organs to maximize the beneficial antioxidant and detoxifying effects and to minimize the pro-oxidant toxic effects. This review analyzes and compiles existing data from aquatic organisms in which both benefits and drawbacks of LA have been described.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: The annual incidence of seizure disorders rises sharply after the age of 60. Treatment is complicated by the normal physiological changes of aging, comorbid diseases, and polypharmacy. Despite this, approximately 80% of the patients become seizure-free. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to (1) analyze the outcome of a cohort of patients with newly-diagnosed epilepsy over the age of 65, (2) describe epilepsy etiology and seizure type, and (3) classify the outcome according to the latest ILAE classification proposal for drug-resistant epilepsy (2010). METHODS: All patients with newly-diagnosed epilepsy over the age of 65 who were evaluated in two different institutions were included. Seizures and epilepsy syndromes were classified according to the International League Against Epilepsy proposal (2010). Epilepsy outcomes were also analyzed according to the proposal of the ILAE Commission on Therapeutic Strategies (2010). RESULTS: One hundred and twenty-two patients were included with a median follow-up time of 15 months. Median age of diagnosis was 78 years. Seventy-seven patients (55%) had epilepsy of unknown cause, and 55 (45%) had structural-metabolic epilepsy. The proportions of seizure-free patients at 6, 12, 18, and 24 months were 90%, 77%, 74%, and 67%, respectively. Thirty percent of patients experienced adverse effects (AEs). We found a statistically significant trend toward a higher frequency of AEs as the number of concomitant medications rose and in younger patients. According to the 2010 ILAE classification proposal for drug-resistant epilepsy criteria, 55.8% of the patients were seizure-free, 12.3% had treatment failure, and 32% had undetermined seizure outcome. CONCLUSION: Patients with newly-diagnosed epilepsy after the age of 65 have very good chances of achieving seizure control with AED treatment. It seems that fulfilling the ILAE classification proposal for drug-resistant epilepsy (2010) criteria for seizure freedom was more difficult in our cohort. Older patients also seem to be more prone to suffering from AEs.

RESUMEN

Stars are generally spherical, yet their gaseous envelopes often appear nonspherical when ejected near the end of their lives. This quirk is most notable during the planetary nebula phase, when these envelopes become ionized. Interactions among stars in a binary system are suspected to cause the asymmetry. In particular, a precessing accretion disk around a companion is believed to launch point-symmetric jets, as seen in the prototype Fleming 1. Our finding of a post-common-envelope binary nucleus in Fleming 1 confirms that this scenario is highly favorable. Similar binary interactions are therefore likely to explain these kinds of outflows in a large variety of systems.

In the "Laboratório de Piscicultura Estuarina e Marinha da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande" the rearing of Trachinotus marginatus (pompano) is studied, and in one of these rearing a yersioniosis outbreak occured. The disease was manifested by swimming disturbances, exophthalmiawith panophthalmitis and the classic red mouth, (red mouth disease (RMD). The necropsies revealed focus of peritoneal hemorrhage, esplenomegalyand hepatomegaly.Microscopically a panophthalmitis with dense inflammatory infiltrates was observed, which affected almost all ocular structures. These infiltrates were constituted by granulocytes, lymphocytes, macrophages and eosinophylicgranular cells (ECG), in the exudatessmall structures less colored with Gram negative bacteria aspect were observed. The immunohistochemical, which used a monoclonal antibody anti- Yersinia ruckeri waspositive. The RMD is caused by enterobacteriaGram negative, which affects both freshwater and saltwater fish, with predominance in salmonids. This is the first known yersiniosis outbreak in Trachinotus marginatus in Brazil and it is necessary to keep this disease in mind at the moment of rearing fish of this species.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Chronic subdural hematoma in adults (CSDH) has a global crude incidence of 14.1/100,000 per year in our institution captive population. There is no single treatment protocol. In our hospital we choose a minimal invasive technique (trans-marrow puncture) without general anaesthesia due to the age of the population. A descriptive study of patients with CSDH and treatment results, including a laterality analysis, is presented. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively searched patients with (CSDH) between January 1998 and May 2009. The diagnosis was made by neuroimaging techniques in all patients. The preferred treatment was trans-marrow puncture; exceptionally some patients were treated by burr holes or craniotomy. RESULTS: We found 127 patients. Age, gender, midline displacement, hospitalisation days, and number of procedures, were not a predictive factor of mortality in the first month. A slight majority (55%) of CSDH were on the left side, with no statistically significant difference. There were 6 (4.7%) deaths during hospitalisation. In our series cumulative mortality at six months was 11.8%. Markwalder scale at admission was not a predictive factor of statistically significant mortality. An 80% of the patients received trans-marrow puncture as single procedure was performed on 80% of the patients. CONCLUSIONS: The results of our study suggest that trans-marrow puncture is an acceptable procedure, with low mortality, and less hospitalisation days and complications. Mortality, associated mechanisms, age, gender, midline displacement are no different than in others previous publications. We found a higher frequency of hematomas to the left, as in other series. Meta-analysis studied need to be performed to determine more accurately the frequency of this dominance.
