RESUMEN

Whispering gallery mode (WGM) resonators have high-quality factors and can be used in high-sensitivity sensors due to the narrow line width that allows for the detection of small external changes. In this paper, a force-sensing system based on a high-Q asymmetric V-shaped CaF2 resonator is proposed. Based on the dispersion coupling mechanism, the deformation of the resonator is achieved by loading force, and the resonant frequency is changed to determine the measurement. By adjusting the structural parameters of the asymmetric V-shaped resonator, the deformation of the resonator under force loading is improved. The experimental results show that the sensitivity of the V-shaped tip is 18.84 V/N, which determines the force-sensing resolution of 8.49 µN. This work provides a solution for force-sensing measurements based on a WGM resonator.

RESUMEN

Acoustic sensors with ultrahigh sensitivity, broadband response, and high resolution are essential for high-precision nondestructive weak signal detection technology. In this paper, based on the size effect of an ultrahigh-quality (Q) calcium fluoride (CaF2) resonator, a weak acoustic signal is detected by the dispersive response regime in which an acoustic, elastic wave modulates the geometry and is converted to a resonance frequency shift. Through the structural design of the resonator, the sensitivity reaches 11.54 V/Pa at 10 kHz in the experiment. To our knowledge, the result is higher than that of other optical resonator acoustic sensors. We further detected a weak signal as low as 9.4 µPa/Hz1/2, which greatly improved the detection resolution. With a good directionality of 36.4 dB and a broadband frequency response range of 20 Hz-20 kHz, the CaF2 resonator acoustic sensing system can not only acquire and reconstruct speech signals over a long distance but also accurately identify and separate multiple voices in noisy environments. This system shows high performance in weak sound detection, sound source localization, sleep monitoring, and many other voice interaction applications.

RESUMEN

Whispering gallery mode (WGM) resonators with an ultrahigh quality (Q) factor provide an extremely high resolution for high-precision sensing. However, it is difficult to use them directly in magnetic sensors because of the transparency to the magnetic field. In this paper, a sandwich structure consisting of a neodymium iron boron magnet and calcium fluoride resonator with a Q factor of 109 is proposed. The experimental results show that, compared with the conventional magnetometer, the signal-to-noise ratio of the optical WGM magnetometer reaches 62 dB, with the direct current sensitivity of 42.59 MHz/mT and the AC sensitivity of 794p T H z -1/2 at 42 kHz.

RESUMEN

Whispering-gallery-mode crystalline resonators currently maintain the best quality factor (Q) record; however, compact on-chip packaging is still a challenge, although various coupling architectures have been developed. Here, a chemical etching method is proposed to fabricate a miniaturized tapered fiber waveguide on silicon substrate. The Marangoni effect is implemented to reduce the surface roughness of the cone region. The optical loss of 0.1 dB/mm is obtained, and the Q of the on-chip crystalline resonator exceeds 108. Additionally, thermoelectric cooler (TEC) is implanted in the package to actively customize the temperature, and the temperature response of 18 pm/°C is consistent with the theoretical calculation.

RESUMEN

Whispering gallery mode polymer resonators are becoming competitive with devices made of other materials, however, the inherent thermal sensitivity of the materials and the small size limit their applications, such as high-precision optical gyroscope. Here, a method is proposed for fabricating large-scale NOA65 resonators with quality factors greater than 105 on a chip employing superoleophobic. The sandwich structure as the core layer of resonator is used to present the flexible remodeling characteristics, the surface roughness remains below 1 nm when the diameter changes by more than 25%. Importantly, theoretical and experimental results show that under the tuning action of external pressure, the equivalent thermal expansion coefficient of the resonator gradually approaches the glass sheet on both sides with the variation of 2 × 10-4 /°C∼0.9 × 10-4 /°C, and the corresponding temperature response range of 0.12 nm/°C∼-0.056 nm/°C shows the promise of temperature insensitivity resonators on a chip.

RESUMEN

The tumor suppressor p53 serves important roles in cell cycle arrest and apoptosis, and its activation increases the sensitivity of cancer cells to radiotherapy or chemotherapy. In the present study, the small molecule 2-[1-(4-(benzyloxy)phenyl)-3-oxoisoindolin-2-yl)-2-(4-methoxyphenyl)] acetic acid (CDS-3078) significantly increased p53 mRNA expression levels in a dose-dependent manner. Treatment with CDS-3078 increased p53 expression levels and p53-mediated activation of its downstream target genes in HeLa cells. Additionally, p53+/+ HeLa cells treated with CDS-3078 presented with dysfunctional mitochondria, as indicated by the decrease in Bcl-2 levels, the increase in Bcl-2 homologous antagonist killer and the increase in cytochrome c release from the mitochondria to the cytoplasm. The present results suggested that CDS-3078 treatment significantly induced G2/M phase cell cycle arrest. Therefore, CDS-3078 administration induced apoptosis via p53-mediated cell cycle arrest, causing mitochondrial dysfunction and resulting in apoptotic cell death in cervical cancer cells. Collectively, the present results suggested that CDS-3078 may be a potential anticancer agent.

RESUMEN

The Grüneisen relaxation effect has been successfully employed to improve the photoacoustic (PA) imaging contrast. However, complex system design and cost hinder the progress from benchside to bedside, since an additional pre-heating laser source needs to be coupled into the original light path and synchronized with other equipment for conducting the nonlinear effect. To overcome the limitation, we propose a time delay heating PA imaging (TDH-PAI) method based on the time delay effect in a passively Q-switched laser. Experimentally, only one single microchip pulse laser is built and utilized for the nonlinear PA signal enhancement without additional components. The 808 nm pump pulse of the laser diode and the excited 1064 nm pulse are respectively used for pre-heating and acquiring PA signals. The heating effect is optimized by adjusting the input parameters and an enhancement of more than 30% in PA signals is achieved. TDH-PAI reduces the cost and complexity of the nonlinear PA system, which provides an efficient way for achieving a high-contrast PA imaging.

RESUMEN

The design and development of advanced gene/drug codelivery nanocarrier with good biocompatibility for cancer gene therapy is desirable. Herein, we reported a gene delivery nanoplatform to synergized bortezomib (BTZ) for cancer treatment with histone H2A-hybrided, upconversion luminescence (UCL)-guided mesoporous silica nanoparticles [UCNPs(BTZ)@mSiO2-H2A]. The functionalization of H2A on the surface of UCNPs(BTZ)@mSiO2 nanoparticles realized the improvement of biocompatibility and enhancement of gene encapsulation and transfection efficiency. More importantly, then UCNPs(BTZ)@mSiO2-H2A/p53 induced specific and efficient apoptotic cell death in p53-null cancer cells and restored the functional activity of tumor suppressor p53 by the success of co-delivery of BTZ/p53. Moreover, the transfection with UCNPs(BTZ)@mSiO2-H2A/p53 in p53-deficient non-small cell lung cancer cells changed the status of p53 and substantially enhanced the p53-mediated sensitivity of encapsulated BTZ inside the UCNPs(BTZ)@mSiO2/p53. Meanwhile, core-shell structured mesoporous silica nanoparticles UCNPs@mSiO2 as an UCL agent can detect the real-time interaction of nanoparticles with cells and uptake/penetration processes. The results here suggested that the as-developed UCNPs(BTZ)@mSiO2-H2A/p53 nanoplatform with coordinating biocompatibility, UCL image, and sustained release manner might be desirable gene/drug codelivery nanocarrier for clinical cancer therapy.

RESUMEN

For long distance optical interconnects, 1.3-µm surface-emitting lasers are key devices. However, the low output power of several milliwatts limits their application. In this study, by introducing a two-dimensional photonic-crystal and using InAs quantum dots as active materials, a continuous-wave, 13.3-mW output power, 1.3-µm wavelength, room-temperature surface-emitting laser is achieved. In addition, such a device can be operated at high temperatures of up to 90 °C. The enhanced output power results from the flat band structure of the photonic crystal and an extra feedback mechanism. Surface emission is realized by photonic crystal diffraction and thus the distributed Bragg reflector is eliminated. The proposed device provides a means to overcome the limitations of low-power 1.3-µm surface-emitting lasers and increase the number of applications thereof.

RESUMEN

Beams with curved properties, represented by Airy beam, have already shown potential applications in various fields. Here we propose a simple method to achieve a multifocal curved beam (MCB). The scheme is based on the ability of microspheres to control the distribution of the light field. Combined with the caustic effect, the dynamic control of the beam curvature and the foci can be realized. The simulation results confirm the mechanism behind this phenomenon. Furthermore, MCB is applied experimentally into the end-pumped microchip laser. This work has verified the theory of MCB and achieved a dynamically tunable multi-lobe laser, which has a wide application prospect.

RESUMEN

High power and high brightness mid-infrared GaSb based lasers are desired for many applications, however, the high lateral divergence is still the influence factor for practical application. In this paper, a simple and effective approach based on the fishbone-shape microstructure was proposed, the effective improvement on both the lateral divergence and output power of 2 µm GaSb based broad-area lasers was demonstrated. The lateral divergence is reduced averagely by 55% and 15.8° for 95% power content is realized. The continuous-wave emission power is increased about 19% with the decreased threshold current. The other merits for this microstructure are the unchanged intrinsic characteristic of broad-area lasers and the low cost fabrication.
