[Caudal epidural anesthesia for transurethral resection of benign hyperplasia of prostate]. / Kaudal'naia épidural'naia anesteziia pri transuretral'noi rezektsii dobrokachestvennoi giperplazii predstatel'noi zhelezy.

Caudal epidural anesthesia was used as a basic method of anesthesia in 300 elderly patients for transurethral resection of prostate adenoma. There were no complications during and after operation in spite of frequent concomitant diseases in these patients.

Caudal epidural anesthesia for interventions on the lower limbs and pelvic organs was used in 525 patients. A specific feature of the method is use of hypoosmolic local anesthetic solution (osmolality 260 mosmol/kg) containing lidocaine, 0.9% sodium chloride, and distilled water. Pathologic studies showed that in adult patients, at least 40 ml anesthetic should be injected into the caudal canal for adequate blocking. During surgery, caudal epidural anesthesia reliably protected from surgical trauma without side effects for respiration and circulation. The duration of analgesic effect was 3 +/- 0.5 h and even longer, if local anesthesia was potentiated with sedative drugs. No complications were observed, failures occurred in 5.2% cases. The method is simple and reliable and is recommended for practice.

[Sacral epidural anesthesia in operations for varicose veins of the lower extremities]. / Sakral'naia épidural'naia anesteziia pri operatsiiakh po povodu varikoznoi bolezni nizhnikh konechnostei.

The method of sacral epidural anesthesia was used in 162 patients in surgical interventions for varicose disease of lower extremities. This method of anesthesia was proved to be adequate, technically simple and harmless for the patients.

[Caudal epidural anesthesia during interventions on the lower extremities in patients with hemophilia]. / Kaudalnaia épiduralnaia anesteziia pri vmeshchatelstvakh na nizhnikh konechostiakh u bolnykh gemofiliei.

Anesthesia techniques during surgery on the lower extremities have been compared in 57 patients with hemophilia. It has been shown that caudal epidural anesthesia according to an elaborated technique could be a method of choice.

One hundred and forty operations and eleven manipulations on all the segments of the lower extremities have been performed under caudal epidural anesthesia, i.e. by forming in the caudal canal a dense infiltrate using lidocaine or trimecaine solutions prepared on hypotonic solvent supplemented by microdoses of adrenalin and calcium chloride.
