RESUMEN

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are excited or partially reduced forms of atmospheric oxygen, which are continuously produced during aerobic metabolism like many physiochemical processes operating throughout seed life. Previously, it was believed that ROS are merely cytotoxic molecules, however, now it has been established that they perform numerous beneficial functions in plants including many critical roles in seed physiology. ROS facilitate seed germination via cell wall loosening, endosperm weakening, signaling, and decreasing abscisic acid (ABA) levels. Most of the existing knowledge about ROS homeostasis and functions is based on the seeds of common plants or model ones. There is little information about the role of ROS in the germination process of halophyte seeds. There are several definitions for halophytic plants, however, we believed "halophytes are plants that can grow in very saline environment and complete their life cycle by adopting various phenological, morphological and physiological mechanisms at canopy, plant, organelle and molecular scales". Furthermore, mechanisms underlying ROS functions such as downstream targets, cross-talk with other molecules, and alternative routes are still obscure. The primary objective of this review is to decipher the mechanisms of ROS homeostasis in halophytes and dry seeds, as well as ROS flux in germinating seeds of halophytes.

Cellulose nanofibers decorated with SiO2 nanoparticles (SiO2-CNF) were prepared by the extraction of cellulose nanofibers from Yucca leaves, followed by modification with SiO2 nanoparticles, and used as efficient materials for the removal of both anionic and cationic dyes from the aqueous solution. Prepared nanostructures were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction powder (XRD), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis. The adsorption capacity of the nanostructures was investigated for the removal of both cationic (Methylene Blue, MB, and Crystal Violet, CV) and anionic (Eriochrome Black-T, EB) dyes. The kinetics of adsorption were investigated using some well-known models, including intraparticular diffusion (IPD), pseudo-first-order (PFO), pseudo-second-order (PSO), and Elovich. The adsorption isotherms were also explored using the Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Redlich-Peterson models. The obtained results revealed that the adsorption processes follow PSO kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models. Thermodynamic parameters of the adsorption were measured at different temperatures, indicating the feasibility and spontaneity of the adsorption. The pH and salt effects on adsorption were also explored. Finally, according to the reusability tests, the prepared adsorbents showed high recoverability without considerable loss in adsorption efficiency after five repeated runs.

Von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease is one of the most common cancer predisposition syndromes. Penetrance is high with around 20% of children presenting detectable and curable manifestations of the disease at 15 years old. VHL predictive genetic testing (PGT) is recommended during childhood from age 5 years in France. Insufficient compliance to surveillance of VHL pathogenic variant (PV) carriers is associated with severe outcome. PGT experienced by children and their parents is probably critical in influencing future acceptance of the result and adherence to surveillance. We conducted a retrospective study on minors tested (aged 5 to 16 years old) from 2010 to 2020, in a multidisciplinary oncogenetics consultation which follows a 3-step protocol based on psychological familial support. The objectives were to assess the adherence to follow-up within the National Expert Center for inherited predispositions to renal tumors (PREDIR) network of VHL PV carriers and its benefit through tumor detection and medical interventions. A VHL PGT was carried out in 34 children. Among the 16 children diagnosed as VHL PV carriers addressed to the PREDIR network, none had discontinued surveillance after a median of 41 months. Follow-up examinations detected 11 tumors in 6 children, 4 have been surgically treated. All had a favorable outcome. Our data suggest that a specific and adapted procedure for PGT in at-risk VHL children as well as a follow-up, organized within a specialized expert network, fosters a complete adherence to the surveillance protocol and thus lead to a favorable clinical outcome.

OBJECTIVE: Although a recurrent question in clinical practice, the management of Chiari malformation type I (CMI) and/or syringomyelia during pregnancy and delivery is still debated. The aim of this study was to investigate the modalities of delivery and anesthesia in women presenting with CMI and/or syringomyelia at a national reference center, and to question their potential role in the natural history of these conditions. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using a standardized questionnaire, a customized clinical severity score and data from medical records. RESULTS: 83 patients were included in the final analysis: 32 had CMI without syringomyelia, 27 had CMI with syringomyelia and 24 had non-foraminal syringomyelia. Most patients (55/83) were not diagnosed at the time of their pregnancy, 12 had surgery before being pregnant and 16 were diagnosed but not operated. Most women underwent vaginal delivery (62 %) and neuraxial (i.e. epidural or spinal) anesthesia (69 %). However, the proportion of cesarean procedures increased to 53.6 % and even 83.3 % when considering only patients already diagnosed or operated on, respectively. Nonetheless, neither vaginal compared to cesarean delivery (change in clinically severity score: -1.5 ± 0.4 versus -0.9 ± 0.4, p = 0.4) nor neuraxial compared to general anesthesia (-1.2 ± 0.3 versus -1.5 ± 0.6, p = 0.7) were associated with increased clinical deterioration. CONCLUSION: Although individual evaluation is mandatory, this study supports that neither delivery nor anesthesia modalities affect the natural history for the vast majority of patients with CMI and/or syringomyelia.

INTRODUCTION: Asthma is one of acute respiratory diseases leading to emergency department (ED) referral. Management of acute attack plays an important role in its outcome. OBJECTIVE: This trial was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of nebulized budesonide versus placebo in moderate to severe acute asthma attack in adults in the ED. METHOD: In this clinical trial, we enrolled patients with acute exacerbation of asthma and standard treatment of acute asthma attack was administered to all of them. 41 patients in our study were randomly entered into 2 groups. In one group, we prescribed nebulized budesonide and in the other group nebulized placebo (normal saline) was administered. Patients' demographic data, vital signs, symptoms' acuity and the time of symptom relief, patient and physician satisfaction were all recorded and compared between the 2 groups. All cases were followed and disease outcome, readmission, mortality and morbidity rates were documented. RESULTS: In this study, 20 patients were entered the budesonide group and 19 patients were enrolled in the placebo group. The mean age ranges were 55.70±15.30 and 60.32±18.41 years old respectively. Heart rate, respiratory rate and O2 saturation in the first group were improved significantly after the treatment in comparison to the second group (p<0.05). The mean time of recovery and length of hospital stay were better in the first group than the second group but this difference was not significant (p>0.05). CONCLUSION: The addition of nebulized budesonide to standard asthma treatment might result in more improvement in O2 saturation and less patient's distress.

INTRODUCTION: with due attention to the importance of learning disabilities and necessity of presenting interventions for improvement of these disorders in order to prevent future problems, this study used meta-analysis of the research model on the impact of psychological and educational interventions to improve academic performance of students with learning disabilities. METHODS: with the use of meta-analysis method by integrating the results of various researches, this study specifies the effect of psychological and educational interventions. In this order, 57 studies, which their methodology was accepted, were selected and meta-analysis was performed on them. The research instrument was a meta-analysis checklist. RESULTS: The effect size for the effectiveness of psychological-educational interventions on improving the academic performance of students with mathematics disorder (0.57), impaired writing (0.50) and dyslexia (0.55) were reported. CONCLUSIONS: The result of meta-analysis showed that according to Cohen's table, the effect size is above average, and it can be said that educational and psychological interventions improve the academic performance of students with learning disabilities.
