RESUMEN

Electrical conductivity (EC) is widely recognized as one of the most essential water quality metrics for predicting salinity and mineralization. In the current research, the EC of two Australian rivers (Albert River and Barratta Creek) was forecasted for up to 10 days using a novel deep learning algorithm (Convolutional Neural Network combined with Long Short-Term Memory Model, CNN-LSTM). The Boruta-XGBoost feature selection method was used to determine the significant inputs (time series lagged data) to the model. To compare the performance of Boruta-XGB-CNN-LSTM models, three machine learning approaches-multi-layer perceptron neural network (MLP), K-nearest neighbour (KNN), and extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) were used. Different statistical metrics, such as correlation coefficient (R), root mean square error (RMSE), and mean absolute percentage error, were used to assess the models' performance. From 10 years of data in both rivers, 7 years (2012-2018) were used as a training set, and 3 years (2019-2021) were used for testing the models. Application of the Boruta-XGB-CNN-LSTM model in forecasting one day ahead of EC showed that in both stations, Boruta-XGB-CNN-LSTM can forecast the EC parameter better than other machine learning models for the test dataset (R = 0.9429, RMSE = 45.6896, MAPE = 5.9749 for Albert River, and R = 0.9215, RMSE = 43.8315, MAPE = 7.6029 for Barratta Creek). Considering the better performance of the Boruta-XGB-CNN-LSTM model in both rivers, this model was used to forecast 3-10 days ahead of EC. The results showed that the Boruta-XGB-CNN-LSTM model is very capable of forecasting the EC for the next 10 days. The results showed that by increasing the forecasting horizon from 3 to 10 days, the performance of the Boruta-XGB-CNN-LSTM model slightly decreased. The results of this study show that the Boruta-XGB-CNN-LSTM model can be used as a good soft computing method for accurately predicting how the EC will change in rivers.

Nutrient-dense colostrum can be employed as a functional food ingredient. This work aimed to produce novel functional probiotic Cream cottage cheese (FPC) using probiotic (ABT) culture and bovine colostrum powder (BCP) at levels of 1, 2, and 3%. Physicochemical and functional properties (antioxidant activity, fatty acid profile, and antibacterial activity) were analyzed. The outcome revealed that hardness, cohesiveness, and gumminess were increased while springiness and chewiness were decreased for the treated cheeses. In FPC, medium-chain fatty acids were the predominant forms, followed by short- and long-chain fatty acids, polyunsaturated (PUFA), and small amounts of monounsaturated (MUFA). The antioxidant activity of all the cheese samples was significantly (P < 0.05) increased by increasing the quantity of colostrum powder and lengthening storage time. Color parameters were influenced by enrichment with BCP, whether in fresh or stored samples. With the addition of BCP, the growth of lactic acid bacteria and Bifidobacteria was enhanced, whereas that of pathogenic bacteria, mold and yeast, and coliform groups was inhibited. Cheeses fortified with 2% BCP had significantly higher score values than those in the other treatments. Therefore, it could be concluded that cottage cheese fortified with 2% BCP has high nutritional value and health benefits. In light of the multitude of olive trees cultivated and the lack of the genetic diversity of available genotypes to select varieties and lines that are characterized by high diversity and better performance under the corresponding conditions, A comparison analysis of the genotyping and morphological characteristics of eight olive cultivars growing in Saudi Arabia's Al-Jouf region was conducted and analyzed. Morpho-anatomical and chemical characteristics along with both inter-simple-sequence repeats (ISSRs) and start-codon-targeted (SCoT) markers were used to evaluate the genetic diversity among eight olive varieties in Al-Jouf, Saudi Arabia. Analyses of 27 morphological, chemical, and anatomical characteristics concluded the existence of genetic differences among the studied varieties. Moreover, six ISSR and eight SCoT primer combinations produced a total of 48 loci, of which 18 (10 ISSR and 8 SCoT) were polymorphic. The average polymorphism information content (PIC values of 0.48 and 0.44, respectively) and marker index (MI of 0.79 and 0.48, respectively) detected for ISSR and SCoT markers revealed the prevalence of high genetic diversity among the studied olive varieties. Based on chemical and anatomical characteristics and the selected molecular markers, the eight olive cultivars were grouped into two distinct clusters. Clusters in the adjacent joint dendrogram produced using ISSR, SCoT and combined data were similar, and grouped all individuals into two groups. However, the dendrogram generated on the basis of SCoT separated individuals into subgroups containing at least two varieties. The findings showed that both methods were effective in assessing diversity, and that SCoT markers can be used as a reliable and informative method for assessing genetic diversity and relationships among olive varieties and can serve as a complementary tool to provide a more complete understanding of the genetic diversity available in Olea europaea populations in Saudi Arabia.

Modern environmental organic chemistry is focused on developing cost-efficient, versatile, environmentally acceptable catalytic chemicals that are also highly effective. Herein, hybrid calcium-chitosan nanocomposite films was prepared by doping calcium oxide molecules into a chitosan matrix at weight percentage (15, 20, and 25 % wt. chitosan­calcium) using an easy and affordable simple co-precipitation process. The CS-CaO nanocomposite's structure was elucidated using analytical techniques such as Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Based on the X ray diffraction (XRD) measurements, the crystallinity was reduced by the incorporation of the CaO molecules. Also, from the calculation of the Debye-Scherrer equation on this X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern, the crystallite size was found to be 17.2 nm for the nanocomposite film with 20 % wt. The energy dispersive spectroscopy graph demonstrated the presence of the distinctive Ca element signals within the chitosan, with the amount in a sample of 20 % wt. being discovered to be 21.32 % wt. For the synthesis of bis-hydrazono[1,2,4]thiadiazoles, the obtained CS-CaO nanocomposite could be employed as a potent heterogeneous recyclable catalyst. Better reaction yields, quicker reactions, softer reaction conditions, and green reusable efficient biocatalysts for several uses are just a few advantages of this approach.

The Late Cretaceous was a time of high eustatic sea level that enabled extensive epicontinental seaways and carbonate platforms across the Tethyan Realm, providing favorable habitats for oyster communities to flourish. This study focuses on the Campanian Tethyan oysters from the North Eastern Desert of Egypt regarding taxonomy, palaeoecology, and palaeobiogeography. Three oyster species, Nicaisolopha nicaisei (Coquand, 1862), Pycnodonte (Phygraea) vesicularis (Lamarck, 1806), and Ambigostrea bretoni (Thomas and Peron, 1891), were identified from the Campanian succession in two studied sections. The sampled specimens of the genus Nicaisolopha have undergone a systematic palaeontological revision. As a result, N. tissoti (Thomas and Peron, 1891) is considered herein a junior synonym of N. nicaisei (Coquand, 1862). Palaeobiogeographically, the likely primary migration pattern of the studied oysters suggests an east-west trend along the Southern Tethys margin. All identified oysters in this study exhibit a Tethyan affinity and are primarily abundant in two main provinces: the Southern Tethys and the Western Tethys. The macrofaunal contents are categorized into two fossil associations: the Nicaisolopha nicaisei association of the middle-late Campanian age and the Pycnodonte vesicularis association of the late Campanian age. These macrofaunal associations indicate a deepening trend during the middle-late Campanian age, suggesting a transition from shallow inner neritic to middle neritic environments. Additionally, it is observed that Pycnodonteinae tend to grow larger under eutrophic conditions, low-energy environments, and nutrient-rich waters with high carbonate contents.

The success of industrial operations depends on the effective identification, appraisal, and mitigation of possible hazards and associated environmental concerns. This report provides a complete review of environmental management techniques at the Sukari Gold Mine (SGM), located in the southeastern desert of Egypt. Extensive environmental measurements were taken to assess air and water quality, identify hazards, and analyze risks on the SGM premises. Air quality and noise intensity levels were measured at 39 places around the mine's working region. The findings found noncompliance with the Egyptian Environmental Law's (EEL4/94) noise exposure limitations, with the Power Generator House having the maximum noise levels at 107 dB. Remedial measures such as personal protective equipment (PPE) and exposure limit reduction strategies are being considered to address elevated noise levels. Measurements of particulate matter (PM10) and noxious gases (e.g., CO, SO2, NO2, HCN, and NH3) were conducted in workplace and ambient environments. Elevated PM10 concentrations were particularly concerning in underground regions, forcing the deployment of water depression techniques and improved PPE measures. While gas emissions from most activities remained under regulatory limits, select zones showed hydrogen cyanide (HCN) levels that exceeded permitted thresholds, necessitating specific control actions. Using hazard index (HI) and risk rating assessments, this study found different risk profiles across SGM's workplaces, focusing on high-risk regions for focused intervention. Additionally, a water assessment near a Tailing Storage Facility (TSF) was conducted to monitor the impact of mining activities on groundwater quality. The study revealed that groundwater in the region belongs to the Na-K-Cl-SO4 and Ca-Mg-Cl-SO4 water classes, with potential degradation attributed to high mineralization processes induced by aquifer materials and seawater intrusion. The findings underscore the importance of ongoing monitoring, control measures, and implementation of programs to ensure environmental sustainability and minimize risks associated with mining activities in the Sukari Gold Mines. This research highlights the imperative of continuous monitoring, proactive control measures, and the implementation of environmental initiatives to ensure the sustainability of mining operations within the Sukari Gold Mines.

A novel and highly sensitive high-performance thin-layer chromatographic (HPTLC) method was developed and validated to quantify a combination of five pharmaceutical mixtures spiked to human plasma. The compounds comprised Amlodipine (AML) along with five angiotensin II receptor antagonist drugs (AIIRAs), namely Olmesartan (OLM), Telmisartan (TLM), Candesartan (CAN), Losartan (LOS), and Irbesartan (IRB). HPTLC was performed on silica gel 60 F254 plates using a mobile phase of Toluene: ethyl acetate: methanol: acetone: acetic acid (6:1.5:1:0.5:1, v/v/v/v/v). In a pioneering move, a reflectance/fluorescence detection mode was employed to identify two concurrently administered drugs at different pH levels for the first time. This method utilized the same chromatographic system, incorporating a specific measurement for AML at a neutral medium to achieve its maximum fluorescence at a 360 nm excitation wavelength, and measuring emission using a 540 nm optical filter. The process involved obtaining a very low fluorescence response from AIIRA. Subsequently, to enhance AIIRA's fluorescence, the plate was sprayed with perchloric acid to transition to a strong acidic medium, ultimately attaining the maximum fluorescence of AIIRA using various excitation wavelengths and a 400 nm emission filter. Through this strategic process, we could optimize the fluorescence signals of both drugs, thereby elevating the sensitivity of detection for this drug combination. AML demonstrated a linear range of 18-300 ng/band, while AIIRAs drugs exhibited a linear range of 6-150 ng/band. The method satisfied the International Conference on Harmonization (ICH) criteria for recovery, precision, repeatability, and robustness, showcasing exceptional sensitivity. The approach was successfully applied to quantify AML and AIIRAs drugs in both bulk drug and plasma samples, achieving high recovery percentages and minimal standard deviations.

Water quality index (WQI) is a well-established tool for assessing the overall quality of fresh inland-waters. However, the effectiveness of real-time assessment of aquatic ecosystems using the WQI is usually impacted by the absence of some water quality parameters in which their accurately in-situ measurements are impossible and face difficulties. Using a rich water quality dataset spanned from 1980 to 2023, we employed four machine learning-based models to estimate the British Colombia WQI (BCWQI) in the Lake Päijänne, Finland, without parameters like chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total phosphorus (TP). Measurement of both COD and TP is time-consuming, needs laboratory equipment and labor costs, and faces sampling-related difficulties. Our results suggest the machine learning-based models successfully estimate the BCWQI in Lake Päijänne when TP and COD are omitted from the dataset. The long-short term memory model is the least sensitive model to exclusion of COD and TP from inputs. This model with the coefficient of determination and root-mean squared error of 0.91 and 0.11, respectively, outperforms the support vector regression, random forest, and neural network models in real-time estimation of the BCWQI in Lake Päijänne. Incorporation of BCWQI with the machine learning-based models could enhance assessment of overall quality of inland-waters with a limited database in a more economical and time-saving way. Our proposed method is an effort to replace the traditional offline water quality assessment tools with a real-time model and improve understanding of decision-makers on the effectiveness of management practices on the changes in lake water quality.

Vilazodone is a recently approved antidepressant medicine used for treating major depressive disorder. A simple, extremely sensitive, accurate and green spectrofluorimetric method was constructed for its determination through formation of ion-pair complex with erythrosine B. The formation of ion-pair complex lowers the dye's native fluorescence emission measured at 552 nm (λ ex = 530 nm). In terms of analysis, the system's parameters for producing the vilazodone-erythrosine B complex have been optimized. The reaction was carried out in Teorell-Stenhagen buffering solution (pH 4.6). The fluorescence emission intensity of the dye decreased linearly in the range of 20 - 600 ng mL-1 and the correlation coefficient was 0.9999. The quantitation and detection limit values were 18.5 and 6.1 ng mL-1, respectively. The proposed strategy has been validated according to the ICH criteria. The proposed technique was thoroughly employed for evaluating vilazodone in raw material and pharmaceutical tablet dosage form. Furthermore, it was also successfully used for content uniformity testing. Lastly, using four advanced tools namely the Eco-Scale, the National Environmental Method Index (NEMI), the Green Analytical Procedure Index (GAPI), and the Analytical Greenness metric approach (AGREE), the greenness of the established technique was evaluated.

Mirabegron (MRB) is a ß3-adrenoceptor agonist used for managing overactive bladder syndrome. A cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and highly sensitive spectrofluorimetric method was suggested to serve the purpose of quantifying MRB in its pure state, pharmaceutical tablets, spiked human plasma and urine, and testing content uniformity. In the present study, ninhydrin and phenylacetaldehyde react with the amino group moiety of MRB in Teorell-Stenhagen buffer (pH 7.5) to generate a strongly fluorescent diaryl pyrrolone compound that emits fluorescence at a wavelength of 477 nm upon excitation at 385 nm. The obtained calibration curve showed a linear relationship with a high correlation coefficient (r = 0.9997) in the concentration range of 0.25 to 5.0 µg mL-1. Limits of detection (LOD) and quantitation (LOQ) were 0.082 and 0.248 µg mL-1 respectively. The procedure was verified in accordance with the ICH guidelines. The suggested approach could be utilized for the selective analysis of MRB in its pharmaceuticals, either containing a single drug or co-formulated with solifenacin succinate. The greenness of the suggested method was confirmed using different green analytical metrics.

Gold nanoclusters are a smart platform for sensing potassium ions (K+). They have been synthesized using bovine serum albumin (BSA) and valinomycin (Val) to protect and cap the nanoclusters. The nanoclusters (Val-AuNCs) produced have a red emission at 616 nm under excitation with 470 nm. In the presence of K+, the valinomycin polar groups switch to the molecule's interior by complexing with K+, forming a bracelet structure, and being surrounded by the hydrophobic exterior conformation. This structure allows a proposed fluorometric method for detecting K+ by switching between the Val-AuNCs' hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity, which induces the aggregation of gold nanoclusters. As a result, significant quenching is seen in fluorescence after adding K+. The quenching in fluorescence in the presence of K+ is attributed to the aggregation mechanism. This sensing technique provides a highly precise and selective sensing method for K+ in the range 0.78 to 8 µM with LOD equal to 233 nM. The selectivity of Val-AuNCs toward K+ ions was investigated compared to other ions. Furthermore, the Val-AuNCs have novel possibilities as favorable sensor candidates for various imaging applications. Our detection technique was validated by determining K+ ions in postmortem vitreous humor samples, which yielded promising results.

The dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors, a novel anti-diabetic medication family, are renoprotective in diabetes, but a comparable benefit in chronic non-diabetic kidney diseases is still under investigation. This study aimed to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of linagliptin's (Lina) protective role in a rat model of chronic kidney injury caused by tacrolimus (TAC) independent of blood glucose levels. Thirty-two adult male Sprague Dawley rats were equally randomized into four groups and treated daily for 28 d as follows: The control group; received olive oil (1 mL/kg/d, subcutaneously), group 2; received Lina (5 mg/kg/d, orally), group 3; received TAC (1.5 mg/kg/d, subcutaneously), group 4; received TAC plus Lina concomitantly in doses as the same previous groups. Blood and urine samples were collected to investigate renal function indices and tubular injury markers. Additionally, signaling molecules, epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), and fibrotic-related proteins in kidney tissue were assessed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and Western blot analysis, immunohistochemical and histological examinations. Tacrolimus markedly induced renal injury and fibrosis as indicated by renal dysfunction, histological damage, and deposition of extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins. It also increased transforming growth factor ß1 (TGF-ß1), Smad4, p-extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK)1/2/ERK1/2, and p-P38/P38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) protein levels. These alterations were markedly attenuated by the Lina administration. Moreover, Lina significantly inhibited EMT, evidenced by inhibiting Vimentin and α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) and elevating E-cadherin. Furthermore, Lina diminished hypoxia-related protein levels with a subsequent reduction in Snail and Twist expressions. We concluded that Lina may protect against TAC-induced interstitial fibrosis by modulating TGF-ß1 mediated EMT via Smad-dependent and independent signaling pathways.

INTRODUCTION: The conventional anti-scatter grid is widely used in X-ray radiography to reduce scattered X-rays, but it increases patient dose. Scatter-correction software offers a dose-reducing alternative by correcting for scattered X-rays without a physical grid. Grids and software correction are necessary to reduce scatter radiation and improve image quality especially for the large body parts. The scatter correction can be beneficial in situations where the use of grid is challenging. The implementation of grids and advanced software correction techniques is imperative to ensure that radiographic images maintain high levels of clarity, contrast, and resolution, and ultimately facilitating more accurate diagnoses. This study compares image quality and radiation dose for abdomen exams using scatter correction software and physical grids. METHODS: An anthropomorphic phantom (abdomen) underwent imaging with varying fat and lean tissue layers and body mass index (BMI) configurations. Imaging parameters included 70 kVp tube voltage, 110 cm SID, and Automatic Exposure Control (AEC) both lateral and central chambers. AP abdomen X-ray projections were acquired with and without an anti-scatter grid, and scatter correction software was applied. Image quality was assessed using contrast to noise ratio (CNR) and signal to noise ratio (SNR) metrics. The tube current mAs was considered an exposure factor that affected radiation dose and was used to compare the VG software and physical grid. Radiation dose was measured using Dose Area Products (DAP). The effective dose was estimated using Monte Carlo simulation-PCXMC software. Paired t-tests were used to investigate the image quality difference between the Gridless and VG software, Gridless and PG, and VG software and PG approaches. For the DAP and effective dose, paired t-test was used to investigate the difference between VG software and PG. RESULTS: Images acquired with a grid had the highest mean CNR (71.3 ± 32) compared to Gridless (50 ± 33.8) and scatter correction software (59.3 ± 37.9). The mean SNR of the grid images was (82.7.3 ± 38.9), which is 18% higher than the scatter correction software images (70.4 ± 36.7) and 29% higher than in the Gridless images (62.9.3 ± 34). The mean DAP value was reduced by 81% when the scatter correction software was used compared to the grid (mean: 65.4 µGy.m2 and 338.2 µGy.m2, respectively) with a significant difference (p = 0.001). Scatter correction software resulted in a lower effective dose compared to physical grid use, (mean difference± SD = -0.3 ± 0.18 mSv) with a significant difference (P = 0.02). CONCLUSION: Scatter correction software reduced the radiation dose required but images employing a grid yielded higher CNR and SNR. However, the radiation dose reduction might affect the image quality to a level that impacts the diagnostic information available. Thus, further research needs to be conducted to optimise the use of the scatter correction software. IMPLICATION FOR PRACTICE: Objectively, X-ray scatter correction software might be promising in conditions where a grid cannot be applied.

BACKGROUND: Tacrolimus (TAC) is a frequently used immunosuppressive medication in organ transplantation. However, its nephrotoxic impact limits its long-term usage. This study aims to investigate the effect of linagliptin (Lina) on TAC-induced renal injury and its underlying mechanisms. METHODS AND RESULTS: Thirty-two Sprague Dawley rats were treated with TAC (1.5 mg/kg/day, subcutaneously) and/or Lina (5 mg/kg/day, orally) for 4 weeks. Histological examination was conducted, and serum and urinary biomarkers were measured to assess kidney function and integrity. Furthermore, ELISA, Western blot analysis and immunohistochemical assay were employed to determine signaling molecules of oxidative stress, profibrogenic, hypoxic, and apoptotic proteins. Tacrolimus caused renal dysfunction and histological deterioration evidenced by increased serum creatinine, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), urinary cystatin C, and decreased serum albumin as well as elevated tubular injury and interstitial fibrosis scores. Additionally, TAC significantly increased the expression of collagen type-1, alpha-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1), and transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-ß1) renal content. Moreover, TAC decreased the expression of nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor2 (Nrf2), heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1), and mitochondrial superoxide dismutase (SOD2). In addition, TAC increased protein expression of hypoxia-inducible factor1-alpha (HIF-1α), connective tissue growth factor (CTGF), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), as well as nitric oxide (NO), 4-hydroxynonenal, caspase-3 and Bax renal contents. Furthermore, TAC decreased Bcl-2 renal contents. The Lina administration markedly attenuated these alterations. CONCLUSION: Lina ameliorated TAC-induced kidney injury through modulation of oxidative stress, hypoxia, and apoptosis related proteins.

The simultaneous assay of duloxetine hydrochloride (DLX) and avanafil (AVN) in their pure forms, synthetic mixtures, and spiked human plasma was achieved using a novel, eco-friendly, sensitive, and specific HPTLC methodology that have been established and validated. Measuring the levels of co-administered antidepressants and sexual stimulants in biological fluids is an important step for individuals with depression and sexual problems. Separation was performed successfully using pre-coated silica gel 60-F254 as a stationary phase and a mobile phase composed of methanol, acetone, and 33% ammonia (8:2:0.05, v/v/v). Compact bands were produced by the optimized mobile phase that was chosen for development (Rf values were 0.23 and 0.75 for DLX and AVN, individually) after dual-wavelength detection for DLX and AVN at 232 and 253 nm, respectively. The results of polynomial regression analysis were exceptional (r = 0.9999 for both medicines) over concentration ranges of 5-800 and 10-800ng/spot for DLX and AVN, respectively. The quantitation limits were 4.69 and 9.53 ng/spot (0.31 and 0.94 µg/mL), whereas the detection limits were 1.55 and 3.15 ng/spot (0.63 and 1.91 µg/mL), for DLX and AVN, respectively. The International Council for Harmonization (ICH) criteria served as the basis for validating the established approach. Moreover, the proposed technique was evaluated in terms of greenness using four contemporary ecological metrics: The Analytical Greenness software (AGREE), the Green Analytical Procedure Index (GAPI), Eco-Scale, and the National Environmental Method Index (NEMI). Additionally, the Blue Applicability Grade Index (BAGI), a newly developed tool for evaluating the practicality (blueness) of procedures, was taken into consideration when evaluating the sustainability levels of the established approach.

Condensation of 5-benzyl-3-hydrazino-1,2,4-triazino[5,6-b]indole with various sugar aldoses or ketoses gave the corresponding sugar hydrazones as single geometrical isomer or exist in E/Z tautomeric isomers. The hydrazones underwent heterocyclization with Fe(Ш)Cl3 to give the N2-adduct acyclo C-nucleosides: 3-(alditol-1yl)-10-benzyl-1,2,4-triazolo[4,3-b]1,2,4-triazino[5,6-b]indoles rather than the N4-adduct: 10-(alditol-1-yl)-3-benzyl-1,2,4-triazolo[3,4-c]1,2,4-triazino[5,6-b] indoles on the basis of chemical and UV spectral proofs. Conformational analysis of their polyacetates were studied. The new acyclo C-nucleosides were evaluated for antimicrobial activity.

The surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) induces the aggregation of gold nanoclusters (GNCs), leading to the development of a proposed fluorometric technique for detecting thiocyanate (SCN-) ions based on an anti-aggregation mechanism. This approach is straightforward to execute, highly sensitive, and selective. A significant quenching effect occurs in fluorescence upon using the aggregation agent CTAB in GNCs synthesis, resulting in a transition from intense red fluorescence to dim red. The decrease in fluorescence intensity of GNCs in the presence of CTAB is caused by the mechanism of fluorescence quenching mediated by aggregation. As the levels of SCN- rise, the fluorescence of CTAB-GNCs increases; this may be detected using spectrofluorometry or by visually inspecting under UV irradiation. The recovery of red fluorescence of CTAB-GNCs in the presence of SCN- enables the precise and discerning identification of SCN- within the concentration range of 2.86-140 nM. The minimum detectable concentration of the SCN- ions was 1 nM. The selectivity of CTAB-GNCs towards SCN- ions was investigated compared to other ions, and it was demonstrated that CTAB-GNCs exhibit exceptional selectivity. Furthermore, we believe that CTAB-GNCs have novel possibilities as favorable sensor candidates for various industrial applications. Our detection technique was validated by analyzing SCN- ions in milk samples, which yielded promising results.

Cereal grains and pulses are staple foods worldwide, being the primary supply of energy, protein, and fiber in human diets. The current practice of milling and fractionation yields large quantities of byproducts and waste, which are largely downgraded and end up as animal feeds or fertilizers. This adversely affects food security and the environment, and definitely implies an urgent need for a sustainable grain processing system to rectify the current issues, particularly the management of waste and excessive use of water and energy. The current review intends to discuss the limitations and flaws of the existing practice of grain milling and fractionation, along with potential solutions to make it more sustainable, with an emphasis on wheat and peas as common fractionation crops. This review discusses a proposed sustainable grain processing system for the fractionation of wheat or peas into flour, protein, starch, and value-added components. The proposed system is a hybrid model that combines dry and wet fractionation processes in conjunction with the implementation of three principles, namely, integration, recycling, and upcycling, to improve component separation efficiency and value addition and minimize grain milling waste. The three principles are critical in making grain processing more efficient in terms of the management of waste and resources. Overall, this review provides potential solutions for how to make the grain processing system more sustainable.

BACKGROUND: The Berlin definition of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) includes only clinical characteristics. Understanding unique patient pathobiology may allow personalized treatment. We aimed to define and describe ARDS phenotypes/endotypes combining clinical and pathophysiologic parameters from a Canadian ARDS cohort. METHODS: A cohort of adult ARDS patients from multiple sites in Calgary, Canada, had plasma cytokine levels and clinical parameters measured in the first 24 h of ICU admission. We used a latent class model (LCM) to group the patients into several ARDS subgroups and identified the features differentiating those subgroups. We then discuss the subgroup effect on 30 day mortality. RESULTS: The LCM suggested three subgroups (n1 = 64, n2 = 86, and n3 = 30), and 23 out of 69 features made these subgroups distinct. The top five discriminating features were IL-8, IL-6, IL-10, TNF-a, and serum lactate. Mortality distinctively varied between subgroups. Individual clinical characteristics within the subgroup associated with mortality included mean PaO2/FiO2 ratio, pneumonia, platelet count, and bicarbonate negatively associated with mortality, while lactate, creatinine, shock, chronic kidney disease, vasopressor/ionotropic use, low GCS at admission, and sepsis were positively associated. IL-8 and Apache II were individual markers strongly associated with mortality (Area Under the Curve = 0.84). PERSPECTIVE: ARDS subgrouping using biomarkers and clinical characteristics is useful for categorizing a heterogeneous condition into several homogenous patient groups. This study found three ARDS subgroups using LCM; each subgroup has a different level of mortality. This model may also apply to developing further trial design, prognostication, and treatment selection.
