RESUMEN

Objectives: Dental implant procedures are crucial for replacing missing teeth, with various surgical techniques impacting the outcome. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effects of flapped and flapless surgical techniques on implant survival and marginal bone loss (MBL). Methods: We included clinical studies with at least ten subjects, excluding review articles, editorials, and conference abstracts. Studies were sourced from PubMed, Medline, ERIC, and Wiley, published between 2000 and 2022. Data were analyzed using random-effects models to compare implant survival and MBL between flapped and flapless techniques. Results: The review identified 21 studies meeting the inclusion criteria. Flapless techniques showed a higher implant survival rate with an approximate survival rate of 98.6% in prospective cohort studies and 95.9% in retrospective studies. MBL was consistently lower in the flapless group, averaging 0.6-2.1 mm, compared to 1.5-3 mm in the flapped group. Low-risk studies demonstrated more consistent and reliable results, supporting the efficacy of flapless procedures. Conclusion: Flapless implant surgery offers a viable alternative to traditional flapped surgery, showing higher rates of implant survival and less MBL. However, successful outcomes depend on advanced imaging, precise surgical techniques, and adequate training. Further high-quality studies are needed to confirm these findings and refine clinical recommendations.

RESUMEN

Advanced graphene-based materials have been proficiently incorporated into next-generation solar cells and supercapacitors because of their high electrical conductivity, large surface area, excellent charge-transport ability, and exceptional optical properties. Herein, we report the synthesis of graphene nanosheets (GNs) from waste cardboard via pyrolysis, with ethyl alcohol as the growth initiator. Additionally, we demonstrated the use of GNs in energy conversion and storage applications. Using the GN electrode in perovskite solar cells resulted in an excellent power conversion efficiency of ∼10.41 % for an active area of 1 cm2, indicating an enhancement of approximately 27 % compared to conventional electrodes. Furthermore, the GNs were used as active electrode materials in supercapacitors with excellent electrochemical performance and a high gravimetric specific capacitance of 167.5 F/g at a scan rate of 2 mV/s. The developed GNs can be efficiently used for energy storage, conversion, and electrochemical sensing applications.

RESUMEN

Interacting with nature may promote mental and physical health. There are multiple ways to interact with nature: indirectly, incidentally, and intentionally. How these types of interactions with nature may be associated with mental and physical health status and health behaviors is unclear. The purpose of this narrative review is to (1) describe the relationship between interactions with nature (indirect, incidental, and intentional) and mental and physical health outcomes and behaviors, (2) identify gaps in the literature, and (3) provide recommendations for future research. Considerable evidence suggests that interacting with nature, indirectly and intentionally, is associated with improvements in mental health and physical exhibitions of mental status. Furthermore, intentionally interacting with nature is associated with engagement in physical activity and gardening is associated with fruit and vegetable consumption. Research suggests that incidentally interacting with nature may be associated with positive mental health status. More research is needed to understand the relationships between incidental interactions with nature and physical health status and behaviors; as well as among all types of interactions with nature and physical health disorders, sleep, and dietary behaviors.

RESUMEN

Introduction Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) procedure has evolved over the years and one such evolution has been the introduction of supine PCNL by Valdivia in 1987. This approach offers the added advantage of safe access in patients with compromised cardiovascular and pulmonary function. General anesthesia is the preferred anesthetic technique for PCNL. However, in the last decade, there has been an increase in the usage of regional anesthesia for this procedure. We share our experience of supine PCNL for solitary renal pelvic stones under regional anesthesia. Aim and objective To assess the feasibility, safety, and efficacy of supine PCNL for solitary renal pelvic stones sized 1.5 to 3 cm under spinal anesthesia. Material and methods This was a retrospective record review of 35 patients (21 male) who underwent supine PCNL under regional anesthesia between January 2022 till December 2022 at our institute. All patients had a solitary renal pelvic calculus sized 1.5-3 cm. Intraoperative and postoperative data were analyzed. Results The mean age of patients was 38.5 ± 15 years. The postoperative pain visual analog scale (VAS) score was <5 in 31 (89%) and >5 in 4 (11%) patients. The mean hospital stay was 3.33 ± 0.88 days. Mean fall in hemoglobin level was 0.49 ± 0.43 mg/dL. Postoperatively, mild hematuria occurred in three patients (8.5%) and fever occurred in two (5.7%) patients. There was no injury to adjacent organs in this series. Blood transfusion was required only in one patient. Complete stone clearance was achieved in all patients. Conclusion In experienced hands, supine PCNL under regional anesthesia is a feasible, safe, and effective approach with minimal morbidity.

RESUMEN

Wasted food is the single biggest contributor to greenhouse gases. Globally, attempts are being made to both reduce surplus food and divert it into food-to-food operations. This opinion piece covers upcycling and biotechnology-mediated solutions on a technology continuum as a part of the bigger whole to solve this problem. Upcycling is an approach to divert foods that would otherwise be wasted into higher uses that would also have tangible benefits to the environment and society. Likewise, biotechnology can help farmers produce crops with longer shelf life and that satisfy cosmetic standards. Uncertainty, either in the form of food safety, technology, or neophobia in the case of upcycled foods or genes (cisgenic or transgenic) in the case of biotechnology, is a hurdle. Communication and consumer perception should be researched. Both upcycling and biotechnology can provide practical solutions, but their acceptance depends on communication strategies and consumer perception.

RESUMEN

Early and reliable detection of an infectious viral disease is critical to accurately monitor outbreaks and to provide individuals and health care professionals the opportunity to treat patients at the early stages of a disease. The accuracy of such information is essential to define appropriate actions to protect the population and to reduce the likelihood of a possible pandemic. Here, we show the fabrication of freestanding laser-induced graphene (FLIG) flakes that are highly sensitive sensors for high-fidelity viral detection. As a case study, we show the detection of SARS-CoV-2 spike proteins. FLIG flakes are nonembedded porous graphene foams ca. 30 µm thick that are generated using laser irradiation of polyimide and can be fabricated in seconds at a low cost. Larger pieces of FLIG were cut forming a cantilever, used as suspended resonators, and characterized for their electromechanics behavior. Thermomechanical analysis showed FLIG stiffness comparable to other porous materials such as boron nitride foam, and electrostatic excitation showed amplification of the vibrations at frequencies in the range of several kilo-hertz. We developed a protocol for aqueous biological sensing by characterizing the wetting dynamic response of the sensor in buffer solution and in water, and devices functionalized with COVID-19 antibodies specifically detected SARS-CoV-2 spike protein binding, while not detecting other viruses such as MS2. The FLIG sensors showed a clear mass-dependent frequency response shift of ∼1 Hz/pg, and low nanomolar concentrations could be detected. Ultimately, the sensors demonstrated an outstanding limit of detection of 2.63 pg, which is equivalent to as few as ∼5000 SARS-CoV-2 viruses. Thus, the FLIG platform technology can be utilized to develop portable and highly accurate sensors, including biological applications where the fast and reliable protein or infectious particle detection is critical.

RESUMEN

The past decade is known as the era of integrations where multiple technologies had integrated, and new research trends were seen. The security of data and information in the digital world has been a challenge to everyone; Blockchain technology has attracted many researchers in these scenarios. This paper focuses on finding the current trends in Blockchain technology to help the researchers select an area to carry future research. The data related to Blockchain Technologies have been collected from IEEE, Springer, ACM, and other digital databases. Then, the formulated corpus is used for topic modelling, and Latent Dirichlet Allocation is deployed. The outcomes of the Latent Dirichlet Allocation model are then analyzed based on various extracted key terms and key documents found for each topic. All the topic solution has been identified from the bag of words. The extracted topics are thereafter semantically mapped. Thus, based on the analysis of more than 900 papers, the most recent research trends have been discussed in this paper, ultimately focusing on the areas that need more attention from the research community. Also, the meta data analysis has been accomplished, evaluating the year wise and publication source wise research growth. More than 15 research directions are elaborated in this paper, which can direct and guide the researchers to pursuit the research in specific trends and also, find the research gaps in various technologies associated with Blockchain Technology.

RESUMEN

Issues of the environmental crisis are being addressed by researchers, government, and organizations alike. GHRM is one such field that is receiving lots of research focus since it is targeted at greening the firms and making them eco-friendly. This research reviews 317 articles from the Scopus database published on green human resource management (GHRM) from 2008 to 2021. The study applies text mining, latent semantic analysis (LSA), and network analysis to explore the trends in the research field in GHRM and establish the relationship between the quantitative and qualitative literature of GHRM. The study has been carried out using KNIME and VOSviewer tools. As a result, the research identifies five recent research trends in GHRM using K-mean clustering. Future researchers can work upon these identified trends to solve environmental issues, make the environment eco-friendly, and motivate firms to implement GHRM in their practices.

RESUMEN

This study aimed to evaluate the influence of origin information on Pinot Noir wine labels using eye-tracking and its associations with purchase intent, and hedonic and subconscious emotional responses. Two studies were carried out on untrained university staff and students aged 20-60 years old. Study 1 was conducted to assess consumers' (n = 55; 55% males, and 45% females) self-reported and subconscious responses towards four design labels (with and without New Zealand origin name/script or origin logo) using eye-tracking and video analysis to evaluate emotions of participants. In study 2, participants (n = 72, 56% males, and 44% females) blind-tasted the same wine sample from different labels while recording their self-reported responses. In study 1, no significant differences were found in fixations between origin name/script and origin logo. However, participants paid more attention to the image and the brand name on the wine labels. In study 2, no significant effects on emotional responses were found with or without the origin name/script or logo. Nonetheless, a multiple factor analysis showed either negative or no associations between the baseline (wine with no label) and the samples showing the different labels, even though the taste of the wine samples was the same, which confirmed an influence of the label on the wine appreciation. Among results from studies 1 and 2, origin information affected the purchase intent and hedonic responses marginally. These findings can be used to design wine labels for e-commerce.

RESUMEN

Laser-induced graphene (LIG) is uniquely positioned to advance applications in which electrically conductive carbon coatings are required. Recently, the antifouling, antiviral, and antibacterial properties of LIG have been proven in both air and water filtration applications. For example, an unsupported LIG based filter (pore size: ∼0.3 µm) demonstrated exceptional air filtration properties, while its joule heating effects successfully sterilized and removed unwanted biological components in air despite persisting challenges such as pressure drop, energy consumption, and lack of mechanical robustness. Here, we developed a polyimide (PI) non-woven supported LIG air filter with negligible pressure drop changes compared to the non-woven support material and showed that low electrical current density inactivates aerosolized bacteria. A current density of 4.5 mA/cm2 did not cause significant joule heating, and 97.2% bacterial removal was obtained. The low-voltage antibacterial mechanism was elucidated using bacterial inhibition experiments on a titanium surface and on an LIG surface fabricated on dense PI films. Complete sterilization was obtained using current densities of ∼8 mA/cm2 applied for 2 min or ∼ 6 mA/cm2 for 10 min upon the dense PI-LIG surface. Lastly, >98% bacterial removal was observed using a low-resistance LIG-coated non-woven polyimide air filter at 5 V. However, only very low voltages (∼0.3 V) were needed to remove ∼99% Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria and 100% of T4 virus when the LIG-coated filters were hybridized with a stainless steel mesh. Our results show that low current density levels at very low voltages are sufficient for substantial bacterial and viral inactivation, and that these principles might be effectively used in a wide number of air filtration applications such as air conditioners or other ventilation systems, which might limit the spread of infectious particles in hospitals, homes, workplaces, and the transportation industry.

RESUMEN

Increased meat consumption has been associated with the overuse of fresh water, underground water contamination, land degradation, and negative animal welfare. To mitigate these problems, replacing animal meat products with alternatives such as plant-, insect-, algae-, or yeast-fermented-based proteins, and/or cultured meat, is a viable strategy. Nowadays, there is a vast amount of information regarding consumers' perceptions of alternative proteins in scientific outlets. Sorting and arranging this information can be time-consuming. To overcome this drawback, text mining and Natural Language Processing (NLP) are introduced as novel approaches to obtain sensory data and rapidly identify current consumer trends. In this study, the application of text mining and NLP in gathering information about alternative proteins was explored by analyzing key descriptive words and sentiments from n = 20 academic papers. From 2018 to 2021, insect- and plant-based proteins were the centers of alternative proteins research as these were the most popular topics in current studies. Pea has become the most common source for plant-based protein applications, while spirulina is the most popular algae-based protein. The emotional profile analysis showed that there was no significant association between emotions and protein categories. Our work showed that applying text mining and NLP could be useful to identify research trends in recent sensory studies. This technique can rapidly obtain and analyze a large amount of data, thus overcoming the time-consuming drawback of traditional sensory techniques.

RESUMEN

Children and adolescents infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) are predominantly asymptomatic or have mild symptoms compared with the more severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) described in adults. However, SARS-CoV-2 is also associated with a widely reported but poorly understood paediatric systemic vasculitis. This multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) has features that overlap with myocarditis, toxic-shock syndrome and Kawasaki disease. Current evidence indicates that MIS-C is the result of an exaggerated innate and adaptive immune response, characterized by a cytokine storm, and that it is triggered by prior SARS-CoV-2 exposure. Epidemiological, clinical and immunological differences classify MIS-C as being distinct from Kawasaki disease. Differences include the age range, and the geographical and ethnic distribution of patients. MIS-C is associated with prominent gastrointestinal and cardiovascular system involvement, admission to intensive care unit, neutrophilia, lymphopenia, high levels of IFNγ and low counts of naive CD4+ T cells, with a high proportion of activated memory T cells. Further investigation of MIS-C will continue to enhance our understanding of similar conditions associated with a cytokine storm.

RESUMEN

Dental plaque is a complex microbial population of bacterial and salivary polymers present on the tooth surface. It is understood that human diseases must be avoided and a high social concern for the population as a whole. The argument for the implementation of successful prevention measures is strong for life-threatening diseases or those with serious morbidity. However, regardless of seriousness, the case for avoiding any disease may be based on the belief that it is easier to be healthy than dead or sick. Thus plaque prevention is an efficient way to both treat and avoid periodontal diseases, it is an important component of gingival and periodontal diseases' primary management.

RESUMEN

Intravenous (IV) sildenafil may be administered as a continuous infusion or intermittent bolus dosing in infants with pulmonary hypertension (PH). We aimed to compare these delivery methods. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated subjects less than 12 months old treated with IV sildenafil for PH. Vital signs, oxygen requirement, vasoactive-inotropic score (VIS), and echocardiogram results before and after sildenafil initiation, and the need for discontinuation due to side effects, were noted. RESULTS: Forty-three subjects were identified (23 continuous, 20 intermittent). There were clinically significant differences in PH classifications between groups. The continuous group was significantly younger (p = 0.010) with higher baseline severity of illness suggested by higher inspired oxygen (FiO2 ) and VIS (p = 0.012). After sildenafil initiation, there were no significant differences in changes in blood pressure, oxygen saturation, FiO2 , or VIS between groups, and no difference in the number of subjects requiring discontinuation due to side effects (4 continuous, 1 intermittent, p = 0.351). Eight continuous group subjects (34.8%) and 3 intermittent group subjects (15.0%) died (p = 0.024), but echocardiographic improvement in PH degree was more common in the continuous group (77.8% vs. 33.3%, p = 0.007). CONCLUSION: In this small cohort of infants treated with continuous or intermittent IV sildenafil, in the setting of different baseline characteristics between groups, there were no significant differences in changes in vital signs, VIS, FiO2 , or need for discontinuation of therapy due to side effects. Higher continuous group mortality may be explained by greater baseline illness severity, but larger prospective, randomized studies are required to investigate these different delivery methods.

RESUMEN

Osteoporosis is a major health problem in postmenopausal women globally. This study determined the mechanism through which coelogin stimulates osteoblastogenesis and its osteoprotective and bone regenerating potential. Coelogin effect on primary calvarial osteoblast cells was determined by measuring alkaline phosphatase activity, mineralization, osteoblast survival, and apoptosis and protein expression studies. The osteoprotective effect of coelogin was also evaluated on osteopenic adult female Swiss mice. At autopsy, bones were collected for dynamic and histomorphometry studies. Serum samples were also collected for assessment of serum parameters. Coelogin treatment led to increased osteoblast proliferation, survival, differentiation, and mineralization in osteoblast cells. Coelogin supplementation to Ovx mice promoted new bone formation, prevented Ovx-induced deterioration of bone microarchitecture, and enhanced bone regeneration. In addition, signaling studies revealed that coelogin treatment activates the ER-Erk and Akt-dependent signaling pathways which stimulate the osteoblastogenesis in osteoblast cells.

RESUMEN

Background: SARS-CoV-2 infection may not provide long lasting post-infection immunity. While hundreds of reinfections have reported only a few have been confirmed. Whole genome sequencing (WGS) of the viral isolates from the different episodes is mandatory to establish reinfection. Methods: Nasopharyngeal (NP), oropharyngeal (OP) and whole blood (WB) samples were collected from paired samples of four individuals who were suspected of SARS-CoV-2 reinfection based on distinct clinical episodes and RT-PCR tests. Details from their case record files and investigations were documented. RNA was extracted from the NP and OP samples and subjected to WGS, and the nucleotide and amino acid sequences were subjected to genome and protein-based functional annotation analyses. Serial serology was performed for Anti-N IgG, Anti- S1 RBD IgG, and sVNT (surrogate virus neutralizing test). Findings: Three patients were more symptomatic with lower Ct values and longer duration of illness. Seroconversion was detected soon after the second episode in three patients. WGS generated a genome coverage ranging from 80.07 to 99.7%. Phylogenetic analysis revealed sequences belonged to G, GR and "Other" clades. A total of 42mutations were identified in all the samples, consisting of 22 non-synonymous, 17 synonymous, two in upstream, and one in downstream regions of the SARS-CoV-2 genome. Comparative genomic and protein-based annotation analyses revealed differences in the presence and absence of specific mutations in the virus sequences from the two episodes in all four paired samples. Interpretation: Based on the criteria of genome variations identified by whole genome sequencing and supported by clinical presentation, molecular and serological tests, we were able to confirm reinfections in two patients, provide weak evidence of reinfection in the third patient and unable to rule out a prolonged infection in the fourth. This study emphasizes the importance of detailed analyses of clinical and serological information as well as the virus's genomic variations while assessing cases of SARS-CoV-2 reinfection.
