Tannins are compounds present in forage plants that, in small quantities in the diet of ruminants, produce protein complexes that promote passage through the rumen and use in the intestine. This study tested the hypothesis that beeswax (BW) and carnauba wax (CW) lipid matrices are effective encapsulants for creating bypass lysine (Lys) for ruminants, with tannin extracted from the Mimosa tenuiflora hay source enhancing material protection. Microencapsulated systems were made using the fusion-emulsification technique with a 2:1 shell-to-core ratio and four tannin levels (0%, 1%, 2%; 3%). The following eight treatments were tested: BWLys0%, BWLys1%, BWLys2%, BWLys3%, CWLys0%, CWLys1%, CWLys2%, and CWLys3%. Tannin inclusion improved microencapsulation yield and efficiency. CWLys3% had the highest microencapsulation efficiency and retained Lys. Lysine in BW and CW matrices showed higher thermal stability than in its free form. Material retention was greater in BW than CW. Rumen pH and temperature remained unaffected, indicating that BW and CW as the shell and tannin as the adjuvant are efficient encapsulants for Lys bypass production. The formulation CWLys3% is recommended as it is more efficient in protecting the lysin amino acid from rumen degradation.

In this work, chitosan/collagen-based membranes loaded with 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran (2,3-DHB) were developed through a simple solvent-casting procedure for use in the treatment of cutaneous Leishmaniasis. The obtained membranes were characterized by elemental analysis, FTIR, TG, DSC, and XRD. Porosity, swelling, mechanical properties, hydrophilicity, and antioxidant activity were analyzed. In addition, assessment to the biocompatibility, through fibroblasts/keratinocytes and in vitro wound healing essays were performed. The obtained results show that the new 2,3-DHB loaded chitosan/collagen membrane presented high porosity and swelling capacity as well as maximum strength, hydrophilicity, and antioxidant activity higher in relation to the control. The tests of antileishmanial activity and the AFM images demonstrate great efficacy of inhibition growth of the parasite, superior to those from the standard therapeutic agent that is currently used: Amphotericin B. The new membranes are biocompatible and stimulated the proliferation of keratinocytes. SEM images clearly demonstrate that fibroblasts were able to adhere, maintained their characteristic morphology. The healing test evidenced that the membranes have adequate environment for promoting cell proliferation and growth. As the conventional treatments often use drugs with high toxicity, the as-developed new membranes proved to be excellent candidate to treat cutaneous Leishmaniasis and can be clearly indicated for further advanced studies in vivo.

Background: Hypertension is a clinical condition that presents an enormous prevalence worldwide. Despite there being gold-standard treatments, several people frequently present sequelae and die. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) emerges as a cheap, easy-to-use, and portable intervention to modulate the central nervous system and control cardiovascular parameters. Objective: To evaluate the tDCS effects on the hemodynamic and autonomic parameters of hypertensive people. Methods: This systematic review included clinical trials published in databases that used tDCS as an intervention, isolated or associated, in hypertensive people to modulate the hemodynamic and autonomic parameters. We calculated the effect sizes, performed a meta-analysis, and evaluated the risk of bias in the studies. Three different researchers performed all the steps presented in the methods section. Results: Four studies suited the eligibility criteria of this review. Some studies showed that tDCS isolated after one session generated improvements in hemodynamic and autonomic parameters. Despite in meta-analysis, no statistical differences were detected between the groups, there was a tendency to reduce systolic (MD: -0.72 (CI: -1.54; 0.11; p = 0.06) and diastolic blood pressure (MD: -1.23; CI: -3.45; 0.99; p < 0.01), and root mean square of successive differences (MD: 0.73; CI: -0.30; 1.76; p < 0.01). There was no statistical difference after ten tDCS sessions. All the studies presented a low risk of bias. Conclusion: After one session, isolated tDCS might be able to modulate hypertensive people's hemodynamic and autonomic parameters. The anodic stimulation over the primary motor cortex shows signs of being the best target to generate a response.

The presence of drugs in aquatic environments has been considered a global challenge and several remediation technologies have been proposed, including adsorption. In this study, new diclofenac adsorbents were obtained from the reaction of sodium magadiite (Na-Mag) with surfactants dodecylpyridinium chloride hydrate (C12pyCl) and hexadecylpyridinium chloride monohydrate (C16pyCl)), 1-hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (C16Br), and dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (C12Br). The synthesis was carried out in the microwave at 50 °C for 5 min using surfactant amounts of 100% and 200% in relation to the cation exchange capacity of Na-Mag. The elemental analysis indicated that surfactants with a longer organic chain were more incorporated into Na-Mag, whose values were 1.42 and 1.32 mmol g-1 for C16pyMag200% and C16Mag200%, respectively. X-ray diffraction results suggested formation of intercalated products with basal space in the range of 2.81-4.00 nm. Diclofenac was quickly adsorbed on all organophilic magadiites, at an equilibrium time of 1 min. Drug capacity adsorption was influenced by the arrangement and packing density of organic cations, the basal distance, and the organic contents of the samples at high drug concentrations. Alkylpyridinium magadiites exhibited maximum adsorption capacities higher than alkylammonium magadiites, of 96.4, 100.7, 131.7, and 166.1 mg g-1 for C12pyMag100%, C12pyMag200%, C16pyMag100%, and C16pyMag200%, respectively, at pH 6.0 and 30 °C. Diclofenac removal by samples was not affected by the presence of ibuprofen, which was also removed from binary system by organophilic magadiites reaching removal of 76.5% and 86.9% by C16pyMag100% and C16pyMag200%, respectively. Regeneration studies demonstrated a drug removal percentage of 83-92% for C16pyMag and C16Mag after three cycles of adsorption.

INTRODUCTION: Similar to chronic pain conditions, individuals with endometriosis can be affected by central sensitization syndrome (CSS), which is characterized by a loss of analgesia and central amplification of pain. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has shown potential as an effective intervention to improve pain generated by other chronic pain conditions impacted by CSS, such as fibromyalgia and chronic pelvic issues. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of tDCS on pain, fatigue, and quality of life among patients affected by endometriosis. METHODS: This is a single-center, parallel, double-blinded, randomized, controlled clinical trial protocol study. We aim to recruit 40 participants affected by endometriosis (active group, n = 20; sham group, n = 20). Anodal tDCS will be delivered at an intensity of 2mA, applied over the primary motor cortex for 20 minutes per day for 10 consecutive days. There will be four assessment times: 1 week before beginning the intervention; on the 10th day following the last tDCS session; and 1 and 2 months after the last tDCS session. Pain evaluated by the algometry will be the primary outcome. Pain intensity, quality of life, fatigue, and global perception of change will be the secondary outcomes. We will calculate the effects of the active versus sham stimulation on primary and secondary outcomes by using generalized estimated equations or mixed model analysis. The effect size calculation will represent the effect measure. We expect that only the active group show reductions in pain, fatigue, and quality of life. The results of this trial will produce an important first step in providing evidence on the effectiveness of neuromodulation for the management of pain and will provide data to support new studies on tDCS. INTRODUCTION: Patients with end-stage renal disease often face a challenging routine of hemodialysis, dietary restrictions, and multiple medications, which can affect their hemodynamic function. Home-based, safe, and nonpharmacological approaches such as transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) should be combined with conventional treatment. OBJECTIVE: To assess the safety and feasibility of tDCS on blood pressure and heart rate in patients with end-stage renal disease undergoing hemodialysis. METHOD: This is a parallel, randomized, sham-controlled trial. Patients undergoing hemodialysis for more than three months were included. The patients received ten non-consecutive 2mA tDCS sessions on the primary motor cortex . Each session lasted 20 minutes. At baseline and after each of the ten sessions, blood pressure and heart rate of the patients were measured hourly for four hours. RESULTS: Thirty patients were randomized to the active or sham group. The mean difference between the groups was calculated as the mean value of the sham group minus the mean value of the active group. Despite there were no statistical changes for all outcomes considering all 10 sessions, we found differences between groups for systolic -10.93 (-29.1;7.2), diastolic -3.63 (-12.4; 5.1), and mean blood pressure -6.0 (-16.3; 4.2) and hear rate 2.26 (-2.5; 7.1). No serious adverse events were found. The active group showed higher blood pressure values at all points, while heart rate was lower in the active group. CONCLUSION: tDCS is safe and feasible for patients with end-stage renal disease undergoing hemodialysis. Future studies should investigate whether tDCS could potentially induce a hypotensive protective effect during hemodialysis.

RESUMEN

Hydroxyapatite can combine with polysaccharide originating biomaterials with special applications in the biomedical field. In this review, the synthesis of (nano)composites is discussed, focusing on natural polysaccharides such as alginate, chitosan, and pectin. In this way, advances in recent years in the development of preparing materials are revised and discussed. Therefore, an overview of the recent synthesis and applications of polyssacharides@hydroxyapatites is presented. Several studies based on chitosan@hydroxyapatite combined with other inorganic matrices are highlighted, while pectin@hydroxyapatite is present in a smaller number of reports. Biomedical applications as drug carriers, adsorbents, and bone implants are discussed, combining their dependence with the nature of interactions on the molecular scale and the type of polysaccharides used, which is a relevant aspect to be explored.

INTRODUCTION: Craving is a multifactorial behavior caused by central circuit imbalance. The proposed treatments involve exercise and reduced food intake. However, the treatments frequently fail. This study aimed to investigate the effect of 10 consecutive sessions of anodal transcranial direct current stimulation over the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex on food craving and eating consumption of women affected by overweight and obesity. METHODS: A randomized double-blind controlled trial with 50 volunteers was divided into two groups (active-tDCS: n = 25 and sham-tDCS: n = 25). There were a total of 10 consecutive tDCS sessions (2 mA, for 20 min) with an F4 anodal-F3 cathodal montage. We evaluated the effects on eating behavior (food craving, uncontrolled eating, emotional eating, and cognitive restriction), food consumption (calories and macronutrients), and anthropometric and body composition variables (weight, body mass index, waist circumference, and body fat percentage). RESULTS: There were no statistically significant results between groups at the baseline regarding sociodemographic and clinical characteristics. Also, there was no significant interaction between time versus group for any of the variables studied. Treatment with tDCS was well tolerated and there were no serious adverse effects. CONCLUSIONS: In women affected by overweight and obesity with food cravings, 10 sessions of F4 (anodal) and F3 (cathodal) tDCS did not produce changes in eating behavior, food consumption, and anthropometric and body composition.

Background: Hypertension is a global issue that is projected to worsen with increasingly obese populations. The central nervous system including the parts of the cortex plays a key role in hemodynamic stability and homeostatic control of blood pressure (BP), making them critical components in understanding and investigating the neural control of BP. This study investigated the effects of anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) associated with aerobic physical exercise on BP and heart rate variability in hypertensive patients. Methods: Twenty hypertensive patients were randomized into two groups: active tDCS associated with aerobic exercise or sham tDCS associated with aerobic exercise. BP and heart rate variability were analyzed before (baseline) and after twelve non-consecutive sessions. After each tDCS session (2 mA for 20 min), moderate-intensity aerobic exercise was carried out on a treadmill for 40 min. Results: A total of 20 patients were enrolled (53.9 ± 10.6 years, 30.1 ± 3.7 Kg/m2). There were no significant interactions between time and groups on diastolic BP during wake, sleep, over 24 and 3 h after the last intervention. Heart rate variability variables showed no significant difference for time, groups and interaction analysis, except for HF (ms2) between groups (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Anodal tDCS over the temporal cortex associated with aerobic exercise did not induce improvements in BP and heart rate variability. Objective: We aimed to open a discussion about the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in science and clinical practice, specifically with regard to the use of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) as a technique for managing chronic pain. Main Points of Discussion: To analyze the responses generated by ChatGPT and the best literature about tDCS, we formulated three questions. The answers from ChatGPT, compared to the guidelines and Cochrane review, showed that AI can be a potential strategy to help clinicians and researchers. AI such as ChatGPT is revolutionizing the academic field and clinical practice. However, there is still an unmet scientific and clinical discussion about the insertion of AI to help researchers and clinicians in the neuromodulation area treat chronic pain. Conclusion: We need to know the limits of the use of AI. Even though ChatGPT might be helpful, it should be used with caution in the academic field and clinical practice.

Hydrogels from natural sources are attracting increasing interest due to their ability to protect biologically active molecules. Starch extracted from cassava tubers is a promising material for synthesizing these hydrogels. Copolymerization of cassava gum and incorporation of chlorhexidine digluconate (CLX) into the hydrogels is confirmed by changes in the crystallographic profile, as observed through X-ray diffraction, and a shift in the 1000 cm-1 band in the Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy spectrum. The differential scanning calorimetry reveals changes in the decomposition temperature of the synthesized hydrogels related to CLX volatility. Micrographs illustrate the material's porosity. Release tests indicate a constant linear release over 72 h, while antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Candida albicans is satisfactory, with 100% effectiveness from 0.5% CLX and the formation of inhibition halos. Toxicity and biocompatibility studies show no cytotoxicity. The continuous release of chlorhexidine is promising for components of biomedical implants and applications as it can ensure antimicrobial action according to specific therapeutic needs.

Little information is available in the literature on the use of cactus pear meal (CPM) in poultry diets; therefore, it is important to evaluate diets that provide excellent performance and lower production costs. Our objective was to study the use of Miúda CPM in the diets of laying hens. In the first study, two diets for male and female chicks were used-1: 80% reference diet + 20% Miúda cactus pear meal (CPM) and 2: 80% reference diet + 20% Gigante cactus pear meal (CPM). The variety Miúda provided a better use of metabolizable energy, as well as a greater digestibility coefficient of dry matter, protein, and mineral matter. In the second study, a control diet was compared to three diets with different levels of Miúda CPM for laying hens in the proportions of 3%, 6%, and 9%. No significant differences were found in productive performance. However, there were significant differences in the some parameters egg quality, texture and color profile of the cooked yolk, egg composition, fatty acids and cholesterol in the yolk. It is possible to use 9% Miúda CPM in the diet of laying hens in a semi-intensive system that does not compromise performance and egg quality, and using 3% Miúda CPM provides a higher economic return.

The insertion of hydrophobic and hydrophilic chains in the chitosan molecule can improve its antibacterial activity, expanding its range of application in several areas of medical-pharmaceutical sciences. Thus, this work aimed to increase the antibacterial activity of chitosan through the modification reaction with phthalic anhydride (QF) and subsequent reaction with ethylenediamine (QFE). The chitosan and derivatives obtained were characterized by elemental analysis, 13C Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (13C NMR), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TG), where it was possible to prove the chemical modification. Both materials showed a greater antibacterial inhibitory effect against Gram-positive bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus, emphasizing antibacterial activity against Gram-negative bacteria, Escherichia coli, with values above 70 % of the inhibitory effect, which is a promising result. Assays with human fibroblast cells by the [3-(4,5-dimethylthiazolyl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium (MTT)] bromide reduction test did not indicate toxicity in the materials. Thus, the derived materials showed promise for biomedical applications since they combined excellent antibacterial activity against gram-positive and gram-negative strains and did not show cytotoxicity.

The use of hydrogels helpsthe production of plants in drought-stress environments. Thus, this work evaluated using different hydrogels to minimize drought stress in soybean cultivation. The treatments employed two different hydrogels, one already commercialized and the other produced with cashew gum (Anacardium occidentale), five levels (0, 30, 60, 120, and 240 mg pot-1) of the hydrogels, and two levels of drought stress in sandy soil. The growth and yield of soybeans and the levels of macro- and micronutrients in soybeans were evaluated.growth. The use of CG hydrogel promoted 12% increase in protein content in the seeds in the when soybean plants were subjected to drought stress. The levels of 30 mg pot-1, corresponding to 7.5 kg ha-1, improved the 'morphological and productive parametersof the soybeans. The increasing levels of hydrogel promoted the increase in P, K, Ca, Mg, and Fe and reduced S and Cu on an exponential scale. The use of cashew gum hydrogel increased the K and Ca contents in soybean seeds compared to commercial hydrogel.

Resumo Introdução: Pacientes com doença renal em estágio terminal (DRET) geralmente enfrentam uma rotina desafiadora de hemodiálise, restrições alimentares e diversos medicamentos, podendo afetar sua função hemodinâmica. Abordagens domiciliares, seguras e não farmacológicas, como a estimulação transcraniana por corrente contínua (ETCC), devem ser combinadas com tratamento convencional. Objetivo: Avaliar segurança e viabilidade da ETCC na pressão arterial e frequência cardíaca em pacientes com DRET em hemodiálise. Método: Estudo paralelo, randomizado, controlado por placebo. Foram incluídos pacientes em hemodiálise por mais de três meses. Os pacientes receberam dez sessões não consecutivas de ETCC de 2mA no córtex motor primário. Cada sessão durou 20 minutos. No início do estudo e após cada uma das dez sessões, a pressão arterial e frequência cardíaca dos pacientes foram medidas a cada hora durante quatro horas. Resultados: Trinta pacientes foram randomizados para grupo ativo ou sham. A diferença média entre grupos foi calculada como valor médio do grupo sham menos valor médio do grupo ativo. Apesar de não haver alterações estatísticas para todos os desfechos considerando as 10 sessões, encontramos diferenças entre os grupos para pressão arterial sistólica -10,93 (-29,1; 7,2), diastólica -3,63 (-12,4; 5,1) e média -6,0 (-16,3; 4,2) e frequência cardíaca 2,26 (-2,5; 7,1). Não encontramos eventos adversos graves. O grupo ativo apresentou valores maiores de pressão arterial em todos os pontos, enquanto a frequência cardíaca foi menor no grupo ativo. Conclusão: ETCC é segura e viável para pacientes com DRET submetidos à hemodiálise. Estudos futuros devem investigar se a ETCC pode potencialmente induzir um efeito hipotensor protetor durante a hemodiálise.

We conducted two experiments. The first aimed to obtain and characterize microparticles of slow-release urea (SRU) using calcium alginate as the encapsulating agent. The second experiment evaluated their inclusion in sheep diets. In the first experiment, four treatments from a completely randomized design were employed to develop an SRU through the ionic gelification technique testing two drying methods (oven and lyophilizer) and addition or no of sulfur (S): SRU oven-dried with sulfur (MUSO) and without sulfur (MUO), SRU freeze-dried/lyophilized with (MUSL), and without sulfur (MUL). MUO exhibited better yield and encapsulation efficiency among these formulations than the others. Therefore, the second experiment was conducted to compare free urea (U) as control and three proportions (1%, 1.5%, and 2% of total dry matter) of MUO in the diet of sheep. Twenty-four non-castrated male Santa Ines lambs, with an average body weight of 22 ± 3.0 kg, were used and distributed in a completely randomized design with four treatments and six replications. The inclusion of 1% alginate-encapsulated urea (MUO1%) resulted in higher dry matter (DM) intake than free urea (p ≤ 0.05). MUO2% inclusion promoted higher NDF digestibility than U and MUO1%. MUO1% showed higher DM than MUO2% and higher NFC digestibility than U and MUO2% (p ≤ 0.05). Sheep fed MUO1.5% and MUO2% exhibited similar nutrient intake and digestibility. Sheep receiving MUO1% had higher N-intake, N-urinary, N-excretion total, N-digested, and N-retained compared to U. Sheep fed MUO1% showed greater N-retained (as % ingested and digested), microbial protein production, and efficiency when compared to other treatments (p ≤ 0.05). MUO2% addition (SRU) promoted the lowest microbial protein production and efficiency in sheep. MUO dietary inclusion increased feeding time and reduced idleness time compared to U, regardless of the MUO level (p ≤ 0.05). Adding MUO1% improved the intake efficiency of DM and NDF and resulted in more feed boli than the other MUO levels (p ≤ 0.05). Sheep receiving U had (4 h after fending) higher NH3-N, pH, and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and lower TGL serum compared to sheep fed MUO (p ≤ 0.05), without significant difference among MUO levels (p > 0.05), except NH3-N was higher in MUO1.5% and MUO2% compared to MUO1.0%. The external ionic gelation technique proved suitable for urea microencapsulation in calcium alginate (3%), demonstrating high quality, efficiency, and yield. MUO represents a promising slow-release urea for ruminants and is recommended for sheep diets at an inclusion level of 1.0%. This inclusion level improves intake efficiency and nutrient digestibility, increases rumen nitrogen retention, and reduces BUN without compromising sheep health.

Background: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a promising treatment for Alzheimer's Disease (AD). However, identifying objective biomarkers that can predict brain stimulation efficacy, remains a challenge. The primary aim of this investigation is to delineate the cerebral regions implicated in AD, taking into account the existing lacuna in comprehension of these regions. In pursuit of this objective, we have employed a supervised machine learning algorithm to prognosticate the neurophysiological outcomes resultant from the confluence of tDCS therapy plus cognitive intervention within both the cohort of responders and non-responders to antecedent tDCS treatment, stratified on the basis of antecedent cognitive outcomes. Methods: The data were obtained through an interventional trial. The study recorded high-resolution electroencephalography (EEG) in 70 AD patients and analyzed spectral power density during a 6 min resting period with eyes open focusing on a fixed point. The cognitive response was assessed using the AD Assessment Scale-Cognitive Subscale. The training process was carried out through a Random Forest classifier, and the dataset was partitioned into K equally-partitioned subsamples. The model was iterated k times using K-1 subsamples as the training bench and the remaining subsample as validation data for testing the model. Results: A clinical discriminating EEG biomarkers (features) was found. The ML model identified four brain regions that best predict the response to tDCS associated with cognitive intervention in AD patients. These regions included the channels: FC1, F8, CP5, Oz, and F7. Conclusion: These findings suggest that resting-state EEG features can provide valuable information on the likelihood of cognitive response to tDCS plus cognitive intervention in AD patients. The identified brain regions may serve as potential biomarkers for predicting treatment response and maybe guide a patient-centered strategy. The incorporation of polymeric components into aerogels based on clay produces a significant improvement in the physical and thermal properties of the aerogels. In this study, clay-based aerogels were produced from a ball clay by incorporation of angico gum and sodium alginate using a simple, ecologically acceptable mixing method and freeze-drying. The compression test showed a low density of spongy material. In addition, both the compressive strength and the Young's modulus of elasticity of the aerogels showed a progression associated to the decrease in pH. The microstructural characteristics of the aerogels were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The chemical structure was studied by infrared spectroscopy with Fourier transform (FTIR). The TGA curves from a non-oxidizing atmosphere indicated that the clay had a mass loss of 9% above 500 °C and that due to the presence of polysaccharides, the aerogels presented a decomposition of 20% at temperatures above 260 °C. The DSC curves of the aerogels demonstrated a displacement in higher temperatures. In conclusion, the results showed that aerogels of ball clay with the incorporation of polysaccharides, which are still minimally studied, have potential application as thermal insulation considering the mechanical and thermal results obtained.

The present work explores the esterification reaction in the polysaccharide extracted from the seaweed Gracilaria birdiae and investigates its antioxidant potential. The reaction process was conducted with phthalic anhydride at different reaction times (10, 20 and 30 min), using a molar ratio of 1:2 (polymer: phthalic anhydride). Derivatives were characterized by FTIR, TGA, DSC and XRD. The biological properties of derivatives were investigated by assays of cytotoxicity and antioxidant activity (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydroxyl - DPPH and 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt - ABTS). The results obtained by FT-IR confirmed the chemical modification, there was a reduction related to the presence of carbonyl and hydroxyl groups when compared to the in nature polysaccharide spectrum. TGA analysis showed a change in the thermal behavior of the modified materials. X-ray diffraction, it was shown that the in nature polysaccharide appeared as an amorphous material, while the material obtained after the chemical modification process had increased crystallinity, due to the introduction of phthalate groups. For the biological assays, it was observed that the phthalate derivative was more selective than the unmodified material for the murine metastatic melanoma tumor cell line (B16F10), revealing a good antioxidant profile for DPPH and ABTS radicals.
