RESUMEN

Seagrass meadows serve as critical marine habitats, offering numerous benefits to both humans and wildlife. Taiping Island, situated in the South China Sea, has been historically known for its abundant seagrass meadows. However, satellite imagery suggested there was a low density of seagrasses around Taiping Island. On the other hand, many green turtles (Chelonia mydas) were observed from the shore. To investigate this phenomenon, we conducted drone surveys of the shallow reefs and discovered a density of 902 ± 601 (mean ± SD) individual turtles per square kilometer during high tides. In addition, we conducted a cage experiment to test the hypothesis that large herbivores are impacting seagrass abundance negatively. The results indicated that the blade lengths of seagrasses in cages were significantly longer than those outside. It is likely that large herbivores such as green sea turtles are the key consumers of seagrass on the shallow reef flats of Taiping Island. Accordingly, further research and management should take into account that the increasing number of sea turtles may deplete the seagrasses and have an impact on the seagrass ecosystems.

RESUMEN

Long-range transport (LRT) of air masses in East Asia and their impacts on marine PM2.5 were explored. Situated in the leeward region of East Asia, Taiwan Island marked by its elevated Central Mountain Range (CMR) separates air masses into two distinct air currents. This study aims to investigate the transport of PM2.5 from the north to the leeward region. Six transport routes (A-F) were identified and further classified them into three main channels (i.e. East, West, and South Channels) based on their transport routes and potential sources. Green Island (Site GR) and Hengchun Peninsula (Site HC) exhibited similarities in their transport routes, with Central China, North China, and Korean Peninsula being the major source regions of PM2.5, particularly during the Asian Northeastern Monsoons (ANMs). Dongsha Island (Site DS) was influenced by both Central China and coastal regions of East China, indicating Asian continental outflow (ACO) as the major source of PM2.5. The positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis of PM2.5 resolved that soil dust, sea salts, biomass burning, ship emissions, and secondary aerosols were the major sources. Northerly Channels (i.e. East and West Channels) were primarily influenced by ship emissions and secondary aerosols, while South Channel was dominated by oceanic spray and soil dust. The results of W-PSCF and W-CWT analysis indicated that three remote sites experienced significant contributions from Central China in the highest PM2.5 concentration range (75-100%). In contrast, PM2.5 in the 0-25% and 25-50% ranges primarily originated from the open seas, with ship emissions being the prominent source. It suggested that northern regions with heavy industrialization and urbanization have impacts on high PM2.5 concentrations, while open seas are the main sources of low PM2.5 concentrations.

RESUMEN

This study investigated the chemical characteristics, spatiotemporal distribution, and source apportionment of marine fine particles (PM2.5) for clustered transport channels/routes of air masses moving toward three remote sites in East Asia. Six transport routes in three channels were clustered based on backward trajectory simulation (BTS) in the order of: West Channel > East Channel > South Channel. Air masses transported toward Dongsha Island (DS) came mainly from the West Channel, while those transported toward Green Island (GR) and Kenting Peninsula (KT) came mostly from the East Channel. High PM2.5 commonly occurred from late fall to early spring during the periods of Asian Northeastern Monsoons (ANMs). Marine PM2.5 was dominated by water-soluble ions (WSIs) which were predominated by secondary inorganic aerosols (SIAs). Although the metallic content of PM2.5 was predominated by crustal elements (Ca, K, Mg, Fe, and Al), enrichment factor clearly showed that trace metals (Ti, Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, and Zn) came mainly from anthropogenic sources. Organic carbon (OC) was superior to elemental carbon (EC), while OC/EC and SOC/OC ratios in winter and spring were higher than those in other two seasons. Similar trends were observed for levoglucosan and organic acids. The mass ratio of malonic acid and succinic acid (M/S) was commonly higher than unity, showing the influences of biomass burning (BB) and secondary organic aerosols (SOAs) on marine PM2.5. We resolved that the main sources of PM2.5 were sea salts, fugitive dust, boiler combustion, and SIAs. Boiler combustion and fishing boat emissions at the site DS had higher contribution than those at the sites GR and KT. The highest/lowest contribution ratios of cross-boundary transport (CBT) were 84.9/29.6% in winter and summer, respectively.

RESUMEN

This study explored the temporospatial distribution, gas-particle partition, and pollution sources of atmospheric speciated mercury (ASM) from the eastern offshore waters of the Taiwan Island (TI) to the northern South China Sea (SCS). Both gaseous and particulate mercury were simultaneously sampled at three remote sites in four seasons. The average concentrations of gaseous elemental mercury (GEM), gaseous oxidized mercury (GOM), and particulate bound mercury (PBM) were 2.05 ± 0.45 ng/m3, 19.17 ± 5.39 pg/m3, and 0.11 ± 0.06 ng/m3, respectively. The concentrations of GEM and PBM in the cold seasons were higher than those in the warm seasons, but those of GOM had an opposite trend. In terms of gas-solid partition, ASM was apportioned as 91.3-97.3% of GEM and 2.7-8.7% of GOM and PBM. The average concentrations of GEM, GOM, and PBM at the Green Island (GI) were 2.21 ± 0.47 ng/m3, 22.31 ± 5.35 pg/m3, and 0.12 ± 0.06 ng/m3; those at the Kenting Peninsula (KT) were 2.11 ± 0.43 ng/m3, 20.57 ± 4.38 pg/m3, and 0.11 ± 0.06 ng/m3; and those at the Dongsha Islands (DS) were 1.84 ± 0.40 ng/m3, 15.19 ± 3.58 pg/m3, and 0.08 ± 0.05 ng/m3, respectively. Overall, the spatial distribution of ASM concentrations showed the order as: GI > KT > DS. Air masses blown mainly from the West Pacific Ocean (WPO) and SCS in summer showed the lowest ASM concentrations. Oppositely, high ASM concentrations were commonly observed in spring and winter when polluted air masses were blown by Asian Northeastern Monsoons (ANMs). The transport routes of polluted air masses were originated mainly from North China, Central China, Northeast China, Korea and Japan, and mostly passed through the urban and industrial regions in the northeastern Asian countries.

RESUMEN

The variegated cardinalfish Fowleria variegata produces grunt and hoot calls during agonistic and courtship interactions. Both sounds are tonal and occur as single and multiunit calls. Grunts are of short duration with variable frequency spectra. Hoots are longer, have a higher fundamental frequency, and a more developed harmonic structure. Agonistic grunt calls and short hoot calls (1-2 hoots) are produced during chases and when striking an individual or a mirror. Grunts are produced primarily in male-female and mirror-image encounters, and short hoot calls are produced primarily in male-male interactions. During the reproductive period, long hoot calls (three and four hoots) are the main sound type in a mix-sexed tank and at Dongsha Atoll. These are likely produced by males because isolated females are silent, and isolated males emit long hoot calls. Courtship interactions are mostly silent, and males are silent after capturing eggs for oral brooding. Tank sounds peak at dusk to early evening with a smaller peak at noon, although there are dusk and dawn peaks at Dongsha Atoll. Tank sounds exhibit a semilunar rhythm with peaks at the new and full moon. Other cardinalfish species from the atoll produce grunts but not hoot calls.

RESUMEN

Fish have one of the highest occurrences of individual specialization in trophic strategies among Eukaryotes. Yet, few studies characterize this variation during trophic niche analysis, limiting our understanding of aquatic food web dynamics. Stable isotope analysis (SIA) with advanced Bayesian statistics is one way to incorporate this individual trophic variation when quantifying niche size. However, studies using SIA to investigate trophodynamics have mostly focused on species- or guild-level (i.e., assumed similar trophic strategy) analyses in settings where source isotopes are well-resolved. These parameters are uncommon in an ecological context. Here, we use Stable Isotope Bayesian Ellipses in R (SIBER) to investigate cross-guild trophodynamics of 11 reef fish species within an oceanic atoll. We compared two- (δ 15N and δ 13C) versus three-dimensional (δ 15N, δ 13C, and δ 34S) reconstructions of isotopic niche space for interpreting guild-, species-, and individual-level trophic strategies. Reef fish isotope compositions varied significantly among, but also within, guilds. Individuals of the same species did not cluster together based on their isotope values, suggesting within-species specializations. Furthermore, while two-dimensional isotopic niches helped differentiate reef fish resource use, niche overlap among species was exceptionally high. The addition of δ 34S and the generation of three-dimensional isotopic niches were needed to further characterize their isotopic niches and better evaluate potential trophic strategies. These data suggest that δ 34S may reveal fluctuations in resource availability, which are not detectable using only δ 15N and δ 13C. We recommend that researchers include δ 34S in future aquatic food web studies.

RESUMEN

In this study, the concentrations of marine fine particles (PM2.5) and their chemical fingerprints were inter-compared at two islands located aside from the west and east waters of Taiwan Island and the variability of west and east passages (i.e., Routes A1 and A2) were explored. Marine PM2.5 was simultaneously sampled at the Green and Dongsha Islands and five chemical components (i.e., water-soluble ions, metallic elements, carbonaceous content, anhydrosugars, and organic acids) were further analyzed in PM2.5 to characterize their chemical fingerprints. The highest concentrations of chemical composition and PM2.5 were commonly observed during the Asian Northeastern Monsoons (ANMs) via long-range transport (LRT). Water-soluble ions (WSIs) were dominated by secondary inorganic aerosols (SIAs), and followed by oceanic spray. The major metallic content of PM2.5 was crustal elements, while trace metals originated from anthropogenic sources with an enrichment factor (EF) > 10. In terms of carbonaceous content in PM2.5, organic carbon (OC) was superior to elemental carbon (EC). High levoglucosan concentrations were also observed during the periods of ANMs. Secondary organic aerosols (SOAs) were formed by atmospheric chemical reactions during the LRT procedure. The PM2.5 concentration of Route A1 was 37.51 % higher than that of Route A2, and trace metals (V, Mn, Ni, Pb, Cr, and Cu) increased significantly by 96.16-325.83 %. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) results revealed that the dominant factor of PM2.5 for Route A1 was shipping emissions and vehicular exhausts (41.2 %), while that for Route A2 was oceanic spray (30.2 %). Route A1 was mainly attributed to highly industrialized regions, densely populated urbanized areas, and ship-intensive traffics in East Asia.

RESUMEN

The first occurrence of the cyanobacteriosponge Terpios hoshinota was reported from coral reefs in Guam in 1973, but was only formally described in 1993. Since then, the invasive behavior of this encrusting, coral-killing sponge has been observed in many coral reefs in the West Pacific. From 2015, its occurrence has expanded westward to the Indian Ocean. Although many studies have investigated the morphology, ecology, and symbiotic cyanobacteria of this sponge, little is known of its population genetics and demography. In this study, a mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (COI) fragment and nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) were sequenced to reveal the genetic variation of T. hoshinota collected from 11 marine ecoregions throughout the Indo-West Pacific. Both of the statistical parsimony networks based on the COI and nuclear ITS2 were dominated by a common haplotype. Pairwise F ST and Isolation-by-distance by Mantel test of ITS2 showed moderate gene flow existed among most populations in the marine ecoregions of West Pacific, Coral Triangle, and Eastern Indian Ocean, but with a restricted gene flow between these regions and Maldives in the Central Indian Ocean. Demographic analyses of most T. hoshinota populations were consistent with the mutation-drift equilibrium, except for the Sulawesi Sea and Maldives, which showed bottlenecks following recent expansion. Our results suggest that while long-range dispersal might explain the capability of T. hoshinota to spread in the IWP, stable population demography might account for the long-term persistence of T. hoshinota outbreaks on local reefs.

RESUMEN

In massive bleaching events (losing symbiotic algae from corals), more sensitive corals are bleached earlier than other corals. To perform a comparison of bleaching susceptibility within and across coral species, a simple quantitative method is required. Accordingly, we present a laboratory-based method for comparing the bleaching susceptibility of various coral species by using a standardized image analysis protocol. Coral fragments were sampled from the colonies of five species selected from Kenting, southern Taiwan, and maintained in the same aquarium tank with circulating seawater; 2 seawater temperature regimes were used (i.e., fast-heating program (FHP), with a heating rate of 1 °C per day; and slow-heating program (SHP), with a heating rate of 1 °C per 3 days). Each coral fragment was photographed periodically, and the colored images were subsequently converted to grayscale images and then digitally analyzed to determine the standardized grayscale values (G0) by comparing with that of standard color strip. The G0 of a sample at each time of photographing during bleaching was divided by the difference of G0 between the acclimating and the same but completely bleached fragment to derive the relative grayscale (RG%) at a particular stage of bleaching; this is done for each coral fragment of a colony. The smaller the RG% of a coral fragment the closer it is approaching completely bleached condition. The level of decrease in RG% within a time series of images in each heating regime was used to establish a bleaching time index (BTI). The lower the BTI, the sooner to reach a defined bleaching level (e.g., 30%), this indicates the coral is more sensitive to thermal bleaching. In the experiment, we compared the bleaching susceptibility of the five species. Based on the proposed BTI, the five species were ranked in terms of bleaching susceptibility, and the rankings were identical between the two temperature regimes; three species in Pocilloporidae had lower BTI, whereas the hydrocoral Millepora species had the highest BTI. Within each heating regime, the BTI of different species were ranked and used to indicate susceptibility. In the FHP, the three Pocilloporidae species could be divided into two groups in terms of bleaching susceptibility. FHP not only displayed a higher differentiating capability on coal bleaching susceptibility than SHP, but also had a faster completion time, thus reducing the likelihood of unforeseen complications during the tank experiments. Our color-based method is easier and less effort-intensive than methods involving the assessment of zooxanthellae densities. Moreover, it requires much fewer replicates and all samples in one large tank (e.g., 300 L) for the studies considering multiple species comparisons. This method opens opportunities for studying the effects of species types, acclimatization (e.g., seasons), and environmental factors other than temperature on coral bleaching.

RESUMEN

The fingerprints and source origins of marine PM2.5 at two background islands in the South China Sea were clustered via trajectory analysis and positive matrix factorization. High PM2.5 concentrations at the Dongsha Islands occurred for the north routes, while Nansha Islands had similar PM2.5 concentrations amongst the transport routes. However, the chemical characteristics of PM2.5 varied with the transport routes. Secondary inorganic aerosols (NO3-, SO42-, and NH4+) were abundant in water-soluble ions which dominated PM2.5. Crustal metals were the abundant metals in PM2.5, while trace metals were primarily originated from man-made sources. Organic carbon was superior to elemental carbon, and high concentrations of levoglucosan and organic acids were observed for the north routes. Overall, marine PM2.5 at the Dongsha Islands was highly influenced by long-range transport of Asian continental outflows, while particulate air quality at the Nansha Islands was mainly governed by clean air parcels blown from the SCS.

RESUMEN

Dispersal capability often decides the geographical distribution and long-term success of a species. In this investigation, Pontodrilus litoralis, a widely distributed species along shores throughout mid- and low latitudes of the world, was investigated. We tested three hypotheses explaining its dispersal: helped by humans, transported by birds and carried by currents. Although the earthworms seemed to be associated with artificially planted wind-breaking woods and mangroves along the west coast of Taiwan, they were also found on isolated beaches in the Pescadores Islands without such plantings. They are approximately 2 mm wide, making them too small for use as fishing bait. These two mechanisms invoking human help were not supported. In a laboratory experiment, we moved the earthworms to the plumage of various body parts of pigeons, and they dropped off or died within a short time, a result incompatible with the bird hypothesis. The earthworms stayed alive and grew when immersed in freshwater or seawater for at least a month. They also survived on floating wood in an in situ experiment lasting approximately two months. Thus, the current hypothesis was the only one we were unable to falsify; driftwood and perhaps wooden vessels could provide both food and transport on long journeys. Wood boats exist for a short time on an evolutionary time scale, but it may be long enough to disperse the earthworm around the world. The phase-out of wood boats, thus, may start the divergence of P. litoralis populations around the world.

RESUMEN

An encrusting sponge, Terpios hoshinota, has the potential to infect all species of stony corals in shallow reefs and killing them. It caused a decline in coral coverage in two south-eastern islands of Taiwan. We proposed two hypotheses to examine how the sponges kill the corals, namely, light blocking and toxins, and tested by in-situ experiments. The results revealed that both light blocking, sponge toxins, and particularly the combination of both factors were effective at inducing tissue damage in stony corals over a short period. Second, to answer why the sponges killed the corals, we tested two hypotheses, namely, gaining nutrients versus gaining substrates for the sponge. By analyzing the stable isotopes 13C and 15N, as well as exploiting an enrichment experiment, it was possible to determine that only approximately 9.5% of the carbon and 16.9% of the nitrogen in the newly grown sponge tissues originated from the enriched corals underneath. The analysis also revealed that the control corals without isotope enrichment had higher δ13C and δ15N than the control sponges, which was an additional indication that T. hoshinota did not rely heavily on corals for nutrients. Therefore, our results support the hypothesis that the encrusting sponge did not kill corals for food or nutrients, but rather for the substrate.

RESUMEN

This study explored the temporal variation, gas-particle partition, and potential origins of atmospheric speciated mercury at a remote island in the South China Sea. Two-year data of three mercury species was measured at the Taiping Island. Air masses were clustered into five transport routes (A-E) to resolve the potential origins of atmospheric mercury. Field measurement showed that the concentration of gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) (1.33 ± 0.52 ng/m3) was close to the GEM background level of Northern Hemisphere, while those of GOM and PHg were 13.39 ± 3.58 and 94.33 ± 30.25 pg/m3, respectively. Both regular and intensive samplings concluded a consistent trend of higher mercury level in winter and spring than that in summer and fall. GEM dominated atmospheric mercury in all seasons (86.2-98.5%), while the highest partition of particle-bound mercury (PHg) was observed in winter (13.8%). The highest GEM concentrations were observed for Route A originating from central China and western Taiwan Island, and followed by Routes D and E from the Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia, while the lowest concentrations of GEM were observed for Routes B and C originating from North China, Korea, and Japan. Most importantly, high correlation of GEM versus levoglucosan and K+ in PM2.5 (r = 0.764 and 0.758, p < 0.01) confirmed that GEM was mainly emitted from biomass burning sources at the surrounding countries.

RESUMEN

Finding suitable habitats for specific functions such as breeding provides examples of key biotic adaptation. The adult marine midge Pontomyia oceana requires an extremely specific habitat, i.e., hard substrates above water in shallow water, to deposit fertilized eggs. We investigated how these sea surface-skimming insects accomplished this with a stringent time constraint of 1-2 h of the adult life span in the evenings. We observed that in artificial containers, midges aggregated at bright spots only if the light was not in the direction of the sea. This behavior could potentially attract midges toward the shore and away from the open water. Experiments were performed in the intertidal zone in southern Taiwan to test three hypotheses explaining such behavior: gradients of temperature and CO2, and soundscape. No differences were observed in moving directions or aggregation of midges under artificial temperature and CO2 gradients. However, midges preferred sounds at 75 Hz compared with other frequencies (all ≤300 Hz) as observed in a field experiment involving floating traps with loudspeakers. Moreover, when background noise was experimentally masked using white noise of all frequencies, midges were significantly more likely to aggregate at bright spots in the direction of the sea than in the absence of white noise. These results establish that sound is used by midges to navigate in dark seas and move toward the shore where exposed hard substrates are in abundance. Marine mammals present well-known cases of sound pollution at sea; here the finding in the insignificant marine midge is just the harbinger of the potential effects noise at shore may have to affect critical reproductive stages of marine organisms.

RESUMEN

The reproductive cycle, larval development, and juvenile growth of Tridacna noae and Tridacna maxima were investigated to improve their hatchery production for conservation and commercial use in Taiwan. To study the giant clam reproductive cycle, hypodermic extraction of oocytes from T. noae and T. maxima was conducted in Dongsha and Kenting, Taiwan, from March 2013 to May 2014; ripe eggs were observed in both species from March to August. There was no apparent correlation between reproduction and water temperature. Artificial fertilization was successfully conducted in T. maxima, T. noae, and a hybrid of T. maxima♀/T. noae♂. The diameter of fertilized eggs was 99.0 ± 8.1, 113.8 ± 18.5, and 116.3 ± 6.2 µm, respectively. On day 6, the hybrid died. Tridacna maxima grew more than T. noae in both 1-and 10-month-old juveniles. The juvenile growth of T. noae was compared between the artificial breeding sites of Penghu and Linbian, which represent the main ornamental aquatic animal culture areas of Taiwan. Starting with individuals with a shell length of 15.9 ± 2.5 mm (265 days old), the juveniles observed in Linbian were significantly larger than those in Penghu, i.e., 26.6 ± 3.6 mm on day 307 vs. 18.6 ± 2.9 mm on day 321 (p < 0.001). This might be linked to the differences in local water temperatures between the two locations, i.e., 20.3-27.0°C vs. 16.9-23.9°C, respectively. These results can be used to further research ways to maximize spat production and minimize giant clam operational costs.

RESUMEN

Viable microalgae occur in the air. Whether they can survive the stresses such as UV, desiccation and freezing temperatures at high altitudes during long distance dispersal is rarely studied. If yes, what mechanisms confer the tolerance? Four freshwater airborne green microalgae were isolated from Dongsha Atoll in the South China Sea, classified as Scenedesmus sp. DSA1, Coelastrella sp. DSA2, Coelastrella sp. DSA3 and Desmodesmus sp. DSA6 based on their morphologies and ITS sequences. Their survival rates under UV stress were tightly correlated with their cell wall thickness. All the four airborne green microalgae survived the air-dry stress on benchtop followed by - 20 °C freeze-desiccation stress for 4 weeks, but not the two waterborne green microalgae Desmodesmus sp. F5 and Neodesmus sp. UTEX 2219-4 used as controls. Three of the four airborne microalgae survived the lyophilization treatment, excluding Desmodesmus sp. DSA6 and the two waterborne microalgae. The four airborne microalgae produced carotenoids under prolonged stress conditions, which might help detoxify the reactive oxygen species generated under environmental stresses and shield from the high-light stress in the air. Characterization of these airborne microalgae may help answer how the descendants of green algae survived on the land about 450 MYA.

RESUMEN

Large regions with seagrass meadows have been discovered on Dongsha Atoll located in the South China Sea. The aim of this study is the estimation of acoustic propagation loss in the frequency range of individual bubble resonance due to the gas content of seagrass in seagrass meadows. Specifically, this study seeks to (a) investigate the attenuation of the mid-frequency (2-8 kHz) signal induced by the gas content in a seagrass meadow and (b) present the diurnal variation of sound attenuation. The results demonstrate that >40 dB diurnal variations of mid-frequency propagation loss was observed in shallow seagrass meadow region.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Our ability to investigate processes shaping the evolutionary diversification of corals (Cnidaria: Anthozoa) is limited by a lack of understanding of species boundaries. Discerning species of corals has been challenging due to a multitude of factors, including homoplasious and plastic morphological characters and the use of molecular markers that are either not informative or have not completely sorted. Hybridization can also blur species boundaries by leading to incongruence between morphology and genetics. We used traditional DNA barcoding and restriction-site associated DNA sequencing combined with coalescence-based and allele-frequency methods to elucidate species boundaries and simultaneously examine the potential role of hybridization in a speciose genus of octocoral, Sinularia. RESULTS: Species delimitations using two widely used DNA barcode markers, mtMutS and 28S rDNA, were incongruent with one another and with the morphospecies identifications. When mtMutS and 28S were concatenated, a 0.3% genetic distance threshold delimited the majority of morphospecies. In contrast, 12 of the 15 examined morphospecies formed well-supported monophyletic clades in both concatenated RAxML phylogenies and SNAPP species trees of > 6000 RADSeq loci. DAPC and Structure analyses also supported morphospecies assignments, but indicated the potential for two additional cryptic species. Three morphologically distinct species pairs could not, however, be distinguished genetically. ABBA-BABA tests demonstrated significant admixture between some of those species, suggesting that hybridization may confound species delimitation in Sinularia. CONCLUSIONS: A genomic approach can help to guide species delimitation while simultaneously elucidating the processes generating coral diversity. Results support the hypothesis that hybridization is an important mechanism in the evolution of Anthozoa, including octocorals, and future research should examine the contribution of this mechanism in generating diversity across the coral tree of life.

RESUMEN

A new ten-membered macrolide (1) and a new α-pyrone derivative, (-)-annularin C (2), together with 14 known analogs (3-16) were isolated from the AcOEt extract of the fungus Xylaria feejeensis isolated from the South China Sea sponge Stylissa massa. The structures of the new compounds were elucidated by the spectroscopic analysis and by comparison with reported data. The absolute configuration was determined by the optical rotation and ECD experiments. In an in vitro test, compounds 1, 5 and 9 exhibited significant down-regulating activity of osteoclast cell differentiation at 0.5 and 1 µm. This is the first report of the fungus X. feejeensis from a marine sponge and of osteoclastogenesis inhibitory activity for the metabolites of these kinds.

RESUMEN

Yehuda Benayahu, Leendert Pieter van Ofwegen, Chang-feng Dai, Ming-Shiou Jeng, Keryea Soong, Alex Shlagman, Samuel W. Du, Prudence Hong, Nimrah H. Imam, Alice Chung, Tiana Wu, and Catherine S. McFadden (2018) Surveys of octocorals from Dongsha Atoll, Taiwan were conducted during 2011, 2013 and 2015 by SCUBA at a depth range of 6-25 m. The collections yielded ~540 specimens, encompassing the variety of taxa occurring in the explored sites; estimates of their abundances were also recorded. Dongsha features a highly diverse octocoral fauna, and octocorals are the dominant benthic organisms in the surveyed reef sites, often covering the majority of the hard substratum. Specimens were identified to the genus and species levels based on an iterative approach that integrates classical taxonomy with character-based molecular barcodes. A total of 51 nominal species representing 20 genera belonging to seven families were recorded, plus ~30 colonies that could only be assigned to a genus. Members of the family Alcyoniidae were the most abundant and diverse taxa, with 27 nominal species plus at least one potentially new, undescribed species of Sinularia, and 5-7 species each of Cladiella, Lobophytum and Sarcophyton. Problems with the taxonomic identification and phylogenetic relationships of species in these genera are discussed. The peculiarity of the Dongsha octocoral species composition is noted, and the composition is also compared to the other Taiwanese reef systems.
