BACKGROUND: Anxiety sensitivity (AS) and disgust sensitivity (DS) are transdiagnostic vulnerability factors for anxiety. Both correlate with blood-injection-injury (BII) phobia symptoms in several studies; however, there is ambiguity about their relative contributions, and studies investigating this have relied on unselected samples. Furthermore, although DS reliably predicts BII in studies that do not account for AS, this may be limited to domain-specific DS rather than DS more broadly. AIMS: The aims of this study were to examine AS and DS as separate and simultaneous predictors of BII fears in a sample with a wide range of BII symptoms, and with attention to the specificity of DS to BII-relevant domains. METHOD: Fifty-three participants who scored above a clinical threshold on a validated measure of dental anxiety, and who represented a wide range of BII severity, completed measures of AS, DS and BII symptoms. RESULTS: AS and DS were moderately to strongly correlated with BII severity (r = .40 and .47, p = .004 and <.001), and both independently predicted BII severity when entered as simultaneous predictors (ß = .32 and .35, p = .045 and .015). Furthermore, after omitting DS about injections and blood draws, domain-general DS was still moderately correlated with BII severity (r = .33, p = .017). However, domain-general DS did not significantly predict BII severity after accounting for AS (ß = .20, p = .164). CONCLUSIONS: AS and DS both predict BII symptoms, and prospective research is warranted to examine them as potential vulnerability factors.

Background and Objectives: Global pandemics, including COVID-19, have a significant effect on mental health, and this may be especially true for individuals with health anxiety. Although health anxiety is related to both pandemic-related fears and perceptions of health risks, there is a paucity of research on individual difference variables that might exert an influence on these relationships. The present study examined intolerance of uncertainty (IU) as a potential moderator of the relationship between health anxiety and COVID-related stress, and the relationship between health anxiety and perceived risk of contracting COVID. Design and Methods: A nationally representative sample of North American adults (N = 204) completed self-report measures of health anxiety, IU, COVID-related stress, and perceived risk of contracting COVID. Results: Prospective IU moderated the positive relationship between health anxiety and COVID-related stress, as the relationship was strengthened at average and higher levels of prospective IU. Neither IU subscale moderated the relationship between health anxiety and perceived risk. Conclusion: These results suggest that individuals with elevated health anxiety and high prospective IU may be at higher risk of experiencing COVID-related stress, illuminating the interplay of risk factors that place anxious populations at an increased risk of experiencing stress during acute health risks. Prior research suggests brief mindfulness (breath counting) interventions may be effective at attenuating stress-induced alcohol-related cravings. However, it remains unclear whether this reduction in craving is due to increased state mindfulness or mere distraction. To test this, the present study examined whether brief breath counting would attenuate a stress-induced increase in the relative value of alcohol in young adult alcohol users, and whether this therapeutic effect was superior to simple distraction (cross counting). University students from England and the United States (N = 278, Mage = 20.2 years, 56.5% females) were randomly assigned to one of four conditions: breath counting, distraction, stress-only, no-stress. Participants first listened to a 6-min audio file training the breath counting technique or control audio, before exposure to 2-min noise stress induction or no-stress during which participants engaged in breath counting, cross counting (distraction), or nothing. The relative value of alcohol was then assessed by preferential choice of alcohol versus food pictures. Results indicated that stress-only augmented alcohol picture choice compared to no-stress, and that this stress induction effect was attenuated to a comparable extent by breath counting and distraction. Group differences in alcohol picture choice washed out in the second half of the choice test. The results suggest that the therapeutic effect of breath counting (interoceptive attention) on stress-induced alcohol-seeking may stem from distraction (cognitive load) rather than a unique state of mindful acceptance. Mental health treatment in schools has the potential to improve youth treatment access. However, school-specific barriers can make implementing evidence-based interventions difficult. Task-shifting (i.e., training lay staff to implement interventions) and computer-assisted interventions may mitigate these barriers. This paper reports on a qualitative examination of facilitators and barriers of a school-based implementation of a computer-assisted intervention for anxious youth (Camp Cope-A-Lot; CCAL). Participants (N = 45) included school staff in first through fourth grades. Providers attended a training in CCAL and received weekly, hour-long group consultation calls for three months. In the second year, the sustainability of CCAL use was assessed. Qualitative interviews were conducted after the first year (initial implementation) and second year (sustainability). Interviews were analyzed using the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research domains to classify themes. Although participants reported that CCAL included useful skills, they expressed concerns about recommended session length (45 minutes) and frequency (weekly). Time burden of consultation calls was also a barrier. School staff facilitated implementation by enabling flexible scheduling for youth to be able to participate in the CCAL program. However, the sustainability of the program was limited due to competing school/time demands. Results suggest that even with computer assisted programs, there is a need to tailor interventions and implementation efforts to account for the time restrictions experienced by school-based service providers. Optimal fit between the intervention and specific school is important to maintain the potential benefits of computer-assisted treatments delivered by lay service providers in schools.

OBJECTIVES: Prior research has individually linked rumination, anxiety, and emotion dysregulation to alcohol misuse, but limited research has examined a comprehensive model linking these variables together. The present study tested a moderated-mediation model to examine whether emotion dysregulation moderated the indirect association of anxiety symptoms on alcohol-related problems via ruminative thinking styles. Method: Participants were 448 college students who consumed alcohol in the previous month. A plurality of participants identified as being White, non-Hispanic (40.6%), female (68.6%), and reported a mean age of 22.75 (Median = 20.00; SD = 6.84) years. Results: Brooding and reflection subtypes of ruminative thinking mediated the association between anxiety symptoms and alcohol-related problems with higher rates of anxiety symptoms associated with higher ruminative thinking, which in turn was associated with more alcohol-related problems. Further, the indirect effect of anxiety symptoms on alcohol-related problems through ruminative thinking was stronger for individuals who reported high levels of emotion dysregulation compared to those with average and low levels of emotion dysregulation. Conclusions: In support of prior work, our results suggest that ruminative thinking, particularly brooding and reflection, are key mechanisms through which anxiety symptoms relate to problematic alcohol use, especially among individuals with high emotion dysregulation. Additional work is needed to test whether decoupling the associations between negative emotional states and ruminative thinking among college students with high emotion dysregulation is a viable intervention target to reduce problematic alcohol use.
