RESUMEN

The oxidative potential (OP) of particulate matter (PM) is a major driver of PM-associated health effects. In India, the emission sources defining PM-OP, and their local/regional nature, are yet to be established. Here, to address this gap we determine the geographical origin, sources of PM, and its OP at five Indo-Gangetic Plain sites inside and outside Delhi. Our findings reveal that although uniformly high PM concentrations are recorded across the entire region, local emission sources and formation processes dominate PM pollution. Specifically, ammonium chloride, and organic aerosols (OA) from traffic exhaust, residential heating, and oxidation of unsaturated vapors from fossil fuels are the dominant PM sources inside Delhi. Ammonium sulfate and nitrate, and secondary OA from biomass burning vapors, are produced outside Delhi. Nevertheless, PM-OP is overwhelmingly driven by OA from incomplete combustion of biomass and fossil fuels, including traffic. These findings suggest that addressing local inefficient combustion processes can effectively mitigate PM health exposure in northern India.

Background: We present risk factors, clinical profile, and microbiological spectrum of patients with continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD)-associated peritonitis who were managed at our center. Methods: All consecutive patients with CAPD-associated peritonitis who presented to our center between July 2018 and December 2019 were included in the study. Risk factors, microbiological spectrum, clinical profile, and outcome of patients were studied. Results: Eighty-five patients with CAPD-associated peritonitis and 50 patients who never had peritonitis during the study period were included. Diabetes Mellitus (OR 0.058, 95% CI0.007-0.493, p < 0.05), residence in rural area (OR 3.376, 95% CI 1.084-10.516, p < 0.05), duration of peritoneal dialysis (OR 0.935, 95% CI 0.886-0.987, p < 0.05), mean serum hemoglobin (OR 1.674, 95% CI 1.119-2.502, p < 0.05) and serum albumin (OR 0.148, 95% CI 0.066-0.333, p < 0.05) were associated with higher risk of peritonitis in CAPD patients. Eight-three patients (98.8%) had turbid CAPD fluid and 52 (61.2%) had fever at the time of presentation to the hospital. The mean CAPD fluid TLC on day 1, 3, and 5 were 2034.3 ± 3330.1 cells/cumm, 1049.0 ± 1210.9 cells/cumm, and 605.2 ± 950.5 cells/cumm, respectively. The organisms isolated were two Escherichia coli (2.4%), one Staphylococcus aureus (1.2%), one Klebsiella (1.2%), two Acinetobacter (2.4%), 10 Fungal organisms (11.7%), and in two (2.4%) cases, Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) was detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of CAPD fluid. Thirty-seven (43.5%) patients had a complete cure and 48 (56.5%) patients were refractory to treatment; hence catheter was removed in them (catheter loss). Six (7.0%) patients died during the study period. Conclusion: CAPD-associated peritonitis is an important risk factor for technique failure. The majority of episodes are culture-negative, and PCR can help in detecting fungal and tubercular peritonitis early in the course.

RESUMEN

Recently, long short-term memory (LSTM) networks are extensively utilized for text classification. Compared to feed-forward neural networks, it has feedback connections, and thus, it has the ability to learn long-term dependencies. However, the LSTM networks suffer from the parameter tuning problem. Generally, initial and control parameters of LSTM are selected on a trial and error basis. Therefore, in this paper, an evolving LSTM (ELSTM) network is proposed. A multiobjective genetic algorithm (MOGA) is used to optimize the architecture and weights of LSTM. The proposed model is tested on a well-known factory reports dataset. Extensive analyses are performed to evaluate the performance of the proposed ELSTM network. From the comparative analysis, it is found that the LSTM network outperforms the competitive models.

Aerosols are usually presumed spherical in shape while estimating the direct radiative forcing (DRF) using observations or in the models. In the Indo-Gangetic Basin (IGB), a regional aerosol hotspot where dust is a major aerosol species and has been observed to be non-spherical in shape, it is important to test the validity of this assumption. We address this issue using measured chemical composition at megacity Delhi, a representative site of the western IGB. Based on the observation, we choose three non-spherical shapes - spheroid, cylinder and chebyshev, and compute their optical properties. Non-spherical dust enhances aerosol extinction coefficient (ßext) and single scattering albedo (SSA) at visible wavelengths by >0.05km-1 and >0.04 respectively, while it decreases asymmetry parameter (g) by ~0.1. Accounting non-sphericity leads top-of-the-atmosphere (TOA) dust DRF to more cooling due to enhanced backscattering and increases surface dimming due to enhanced ßext. Outgoing shortwave flux at TOA increases by up to 3.3% for composite aerosols with non-spherical dust externally mixed with other spherical species. Our results show that while non-sphericity needs to be accounted for, choice of shape may not be important in estimating aerosol DRF in the IGB.

Bacterial strains PsF84 and PsF610 were isolated from tannery sludge polluted soil, Jajmau, Kanpur, India. 16S rRNA gene sequence and phylogenetic analysis confirmed the taxonomic affiliation of PsF84 as Pseudomonas monteilii and PsF610 as Pseudomonas plecoglossicida. A greenhouse study was carried out with rose-scented geranium (Pelargonium graveolenscv. bourbon) grown in soil treated with tannery sludge in different proportions viz. soil: sludge ratio of 100:0, 25:75, 50:50, 75:25 and 0:100 to evaluate the effects of bacterial inoculation on the heavy metal uptake. The isolates solubilized inorganic phosphorus and were capable of producing indole acetic acid (IAA) and siderophore. The isolate PsF84 increased the dry biomass of shoot by 44%, root by 48%, essential oil yield 43% and chlorophyll by 31% respectively over uninoculated control. The corresponding increase with the isolate PsF610 were 38%, 40%, 39% and 28%, respectively. Scanning electron microscopic (SEM) studies reveal that the Cr(VI) accumulation resulted in breakdown of vascular bundles and sequesters Cr(VI) in roots. The glandular trichomes (GT) were investigated using SEM studies as these glands are probably the main site of essential oil synthesis. Owing to its wide action spectrum, these isolates could serve as an effective metal sequestering and bioinoculants due to the production of IAA, siderophore and solubilization of phosphate for geranium in metal-stressed soil. The present study has provided a new insight into the phytoremediation of metal-contaminated soil.

Copper is reported to promote and prevent aggregation of prion protein. Conformational and functional consequences of Cu(2+)-binding to prion protein (PrP) are not well understood largely because most of the Cu(2+)-binding studies have been performed on fragments and truncated variants of the prion protein. In this context, we set out to investigate the conformational consequences of Cu(2+)-binding to full-length prion protein (PrP) by isothermal calorimetry, NMR, and small angle x-ray scattering. In this study, we report altered aggregation behavior of full-length PrP upon binding to Cu(2+). At physiological temperature, Cu(2+) did not promote aggregation suggesting that Cu(2+) may not play a role in the aggregation of PrP at physiological temperature (37 °C). However, Cu(2+)-bound PrP aggregated at lower temperatures. This temperature-dependent process is reversible. Our results show two novel intra-protein interactions upon Cu(2+)-binding. The N-terminal region (residues 90-120 that contain the site His-96/His-111) becomes proximal to helix-1 (residues 144-147) and its nearby loop region (residues 139-143), which may be important in preventing amyloid fibril formation in the presence of Cu(2+). In addition, we observed another novel interaction between the N-terminal region comprising the octapeptide repeats (residues 60-91) and helix-2 (residues 174-185) of PrP. Small angle x-ray scattering studies of full-length PrP show significant compactness upon Cu(2+)-binding. Our results demonstrate novel long range inter-domain interactions of the N- and C-terminal regions of PrP upon Cu(2+)-binding, which might have physiological significance.
