BACKGROUND: Attracting and supporting a sustainable long-term care (LTC) workforce has been a persistent social policy challenge across the globe. To better attract and retain a sustainable LTC workforce, it is necessary to adopt a unified concept of worker well-being. Meaning of work is an important psychological resource that buffers the negative impacts of adverse working conditions on workers' motivation, satisfaction, and turnover intention. The aim of this study was to explore the positive meaning of care work with older people and its implications for health care workers' job satisfaction and motivation to work in the LTC sector. METHODS: This study adopted a qualitative descriptive design that pays particular attention to health care workers; such as nurses, personal care workers; as active agents of the meaning making and reframing of care work in LTC communities in a East Asia city. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with thirty health care workers in LTC communities in Hong Kong. Thematic analysis was employed for data analysis. RESULTS: The research findings indicate that while health care workers perform demanding care work and experience external constraints, they actively construct positive meanings of care work with older people as a helping career that enables them to facilitate the comfortable aging of older people, build affectional relationships, achieve professional identity, and gain job security. CONCLUSIONS: This qualitative study explores how health care workers negotiate the positive meaning of older people care work and the implications of meaningful work for workers' job satisfaction and motivation to work in the LTC sector. The importance of a culturally sensitive perspective in researching and developing social policy intervention are suggested.

Introduction: Alzheimer's Disease (AD) typically starts in the medial temporal lobe, then develops into a neurodegenerative cascade which spreads to other brain regions. People with subjective cognitive decline (SCD) are more likely to develop dementia, especially in the presence of amyloid pathology. Thus, we were interested in the white matter microstructure of the medial temporal lobe in SCD, specifically the lower cingulum bundle that leads into the hippocampus. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) has been shown to differentiate SCD participants who will progress to mild cognitive impairment from those who will not. However, the biology underlying these DTI metrics is unclear, and results in the medial temporal lobe have been inconsistent. Methods: To better characterize the microstructure of this region, we applied DTI to cognitively normal participants in the Cam-CAN database over the age of 55 with cognitive testing and diffusion MRI available (N = 325, 127 SCD). Diffusion MRI was processed to generate regional and voxel-wise diffusion tensor values in bilateral lower cingulum white matter, while T1-weighted MRI was processed to generate regional volume and cortical thickness in the medial temporal lobe white matter, entorhinal cortex, temporal pole, and hippocampus. Results: SCD participants had thinner cortex in bilateral entorhinal cortex and right temporal pole. No between-group differences were noted for any of the microstructural metrics of the lower cingulum. However, correlations with delayed story recall were significant for all diffusion microstructure metrics in the right lower cingulum in SCD, but not in controls, with a significant interaction effect. Additionally, the SCD group showed an accelerated aging effect in bilateral lower cingulum with MD, AxD, and RD. Discussion: The diffusion profiles observed in both interaction effects are suggestive of a mixed neuroinflammatory and neurodegenerative pathology. Left entorhinal cortical thinning correlated with decreased FA and increased RD, suggestive of demyelination. However, right entorhinal cortical thinning also correlated with increased AxD, suggestive of a mixed pathology. This may reflect combined pathologies implicated in early AD. DTI was more sensitive than cortical thickness to the associations between SCD, memory, and age. The combined effects of mixed pathology may increase the sensitivity of DTI metrics to variations with age and cognition.

Solar-blind photodetectors based on wide bandgap semiconductors have recently attracted a lot of interest. Nickel-containing spinel phase oxides, such as NiAl2O4, are stable p-type semiconductors. This paper describes a multifunctional solar-blind photodetector based on a NiAl2O4/4H-SiC heterojunction that utilizes photovoltaic effects. The position sensitivity reaches a value of 1589.7 mV/mm under 405 nm laser illumination, while the relaxation times of vertical photovoltaic (VPV) effect and lateral photovoltaic (LPV) effect under 266 nm laser illumination are only 0.32 and 0.42 µs, respectively. This junction was used to create a space optical communication system with sunlight having little effect on its optoelectronic properties. The ultrafast photovoltaic relaxation time makes NiAl2O4/4H-SiC a promising candidate for self-powered high-performance solar-blind detectors.

Objective To investigate the effect of staphylococcal nuclease and tudor domain containing 1(SND1) on the biological function of osteosarcoma cells and decipher the mechanism of SND1 in regulating ferroptosis in osteosarcoma cells via SLC7A11. Methods Human osteoblasts hFOB1.19 and osteosarcoma cell lines Saos-2,U2OS,HOS,and 143B were cultured,in which the expression level of SND1 was determined.Small interfering RNA was employed to knock down the expression of SND1(si-SND1) in the osteosarcoma cell line HOS and 143B.The CCK8 assay kit,colony formation assay,and Transwell assay were employed to examine the effect of SND1 expression on the biological function of osteosarcoma cells.Furthermore,we altered the expression of SND1 and SLC7A11 in osteosarcoma cells to investigate the effect of SND1 on osteosarcoma ferroptosis via SLC7A11. Results The mRNA and protein levels of SND1 in Saos-2,U2OS,HOS,and 143B cells were higher than those in hFOB1.19 cells(all P<0.01).Compared with the control group,transfection with si-SND1 down-regulated the expression level of SND1 in HOS and 143B cells(all P<0.01),decreased the viability of HOS and 143B cells,reduced the number of colony formation,and inhibited cell invasion and migration(all P<0.001).The ferroptosis inducer Erastin promoted the apoptosis of HOS and 143B cells,while the ferroptosis inhibitor Ferrostatin-1 improved the viability of HOS and 143B cells(all P<0.001).After SND-1 knockdown,Erastin reduced the viability of HOS and 143B cells,while Ferrostatin-1 restored the cell viability(all P<0.001).After treatment with Erastin in the si-SND1 group,the levels of iron and malondialdehyde were elevated,and the level of glutathione was lowered(all P<0.001).The results of in vivo experiments showed that SND1 knockdown inhibited the mass of the transplanted tumor in 143B tumor-bearing nude mice(P<0.001).Knocking down the expression of SND1 resulted in down-regulated SLC7A11 expression(all P<0.001) and increased ferroptosis in HOS and 143B cells(P<0.001,P=0.020). Conclusions SND1 presents up-regulated expression in osteosarcoma cells.It may inhibit ferroptosis by up-regulating the expression of SLC7A11,thereby improving the viability of osteosarcoma cells.

Infertility affects approximately 10-15% of couples worldwide who are attempting to conceive, with male infertility accounting for 50% of infertility cases. Male infertility is related to various factors such as hormone imbalance, urogenital diseases, environmental factors, and genetic factors. Owing to its relationship with genetic factors, male infertility cannot be diagnosed through routine examination in most cases, and is clinically called 'idiopathic male infertility.' Recent studies have provided evidence that microRNAs (miRNAs) are expressed in a cell-or stage-specific manner during spermatogenesis. This review focuses on the role of miRNAs in male infertility and spermatogenesis. Data were collected from published studies that investigated the effects of miRNAs on spermatogenesis, sperm quality and quantity, fertilization, embryo development, and assisted reproductive technology (ART) outcomes. Based on the findings of these studies, we summarize the targets of miRNAs and the resulting functional effects that occur due to changes in miRNA expression at various stages of spermatogenesis, including undifferentiated and differentiating spermatogonia, spermatocytes, spermatids, and Sertoli cells (SCs). In addition, we discuss potential markers for diagnosing male infertility and predicting the varicocele grade, surgical outcomes, ART outcomes, and sperm retrieval rates in patients with non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA).

BACKGROUND: Frailty is an aging-related syndrome leading to high mortality in older adults. Without effective assessment and prevention of frailty, the incidence of frailty and relevant adverse outcomes will increase by 2050 as worldwide populations age. Although evidence suggested heart rate variability (HRV) is a potential measure of frailty, the role of HRV in frailty assessment remains unclear because of controversial findings. This study examined the effects of posture on HRV parameters in non-frail and prefrail individuals to understand the role of HRV in assessing frailty. METHODS: Forty-six participants aged ≥ 50 years were recruited between April and August 2022. Frailty was defined using Fried's criteria. HRV was measured in standing, sitting, and lying postures, respectively, using a Polar Watch, and analyzed using Kubios HRV Standard 3.5.0 (Kubios). The five most commonly used parameters were examined, including standard deviations of all normal-to-normal intervals (SDNN), root mean square of the successive differences (RMSSD), low frequency (LF), high frequency (HF), and LF/HF. Independent t-tests and Mann-Whitney tests were used for inter-group comparisons. Friedman tests were used for intra-group comparisons across postures. RESULTS: The non-frail group showed significant differences in HRV parameters across postures (all p < 0.05), whereas the prefrail group did not demonstrate any difference (all p > 0.05). The differences in the non-frail group included higher RMSSD and HF in the lying posture compared to those in the standing posture (29.54 vs 21.99 p = 0.003, 210.34 vs 96.34 p = 0.001, respectively), and higher LF and LF/HF in the sitting posture compared to those in the lying posture (248.40 vs 136.29 P = 0.024, 1.26 vs 0.77 p = 0.011, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: The effects of posture on HRV were blunted in the prefrail group, which suggests an impaired cardiac autonomic functioning. Measuring the effects of posture on HRV parameters may contribute to frailty assessment. However, further evidence from larger cohorts and including additional HRV parameters is needed.

Achilles tendon (AT) injury is one of the most common tendon injuries, especially in athletes, the elderly, and working-age people. In AT injury, the biomechanical properties of the tendon are severely affected, leading to abnormal function. In recent years, many efforts have been underway to develop effective treatments for AT injuries to enable patients to return to sports faster. For instance, several new techniques for tissue-engineered biological augmentation for tendon healing, growth factors (GFs), gene therapy, and mesenchymal stem cells were introduced. Increasing evidence has suggested that GFs can reduce inflammation, promote extracellular matrix production, and accelerate AT repair. In this review, we highlighted some recent investigations regarding the role of GFs, such as transforming GF-ß(TGF-ß), bone morphogenetic proteins (BMP), fibroblast GF (FGF), vascular endothelial GF (VEGF), platelet-derived GF (PDGF), and insulin-like GF (IGF), in tendon healing. In addition, we summarized the clinical trials and animal experiments on the efficacy of GFs in AT repair. We also highlighted the advantages and disadvantages of the different isoforms of TGF-ß and BMPs, including GFs combined with stem cells, scaffolds, or other GFs. The strategies discussed in this review are currently in the early stages of development. It is noteworthy that although these emerging technologies may potentially develop into substantial clinical treatment options for AT injury, definitive conclusions on the use of these techniques for routine management of tendon ailments could not be drawn due to the lack of data.

Successful exploitation of carbonate reservoirs relies on the acid-fracturing process, while the thickeners used in this process play a key role. It is a common engineering problem that thickeners usually fail to function when used in high-temperature environments. Until now, no research has ventured into the field of synthesizing thickeners which can be effectively used at ultra-high temperatures up to 180 °C. In our current study, a novel high-temperature-resistant polyacrylamide thickener named SYGT has been developed. The thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) reveals that SYGT is capable of withstanding temperatures of up to 300 °C. Both our scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and rheological analysis demonstrate that the SYGT exhibits excellent resistance to both temperature and shear. At 180 °C, the viscosity of the SYGT aqueous solution is no lower than 61.7 mPa·s at a 20% H+ concentration or high salt concentration, and the fracture conductivity of the thickened acid reaches 6 D·cm. For the first time, the influence of the polymer spatial network's structural parameters on the viscosity of polymer solutions has been evaluated quantitatively. It was discovered that the length and surrounding area of the SNS skeleton have a synergistic effect on the viscosity of the polymer solution. Our experiments show that SYGT effectively reduces the acid-rock reaction rate and filtration loss under harsh working conditions such as high temperature, strong shear, high salinity, and a high concentration of acid. The synthesized acid-fracturing thickener (SYGT) has wide application potential in the development of carbonate reservoirs under high-temperature conditions.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the association of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of myeloid differentiation factor 88 (MyD88) and Toll-like receptor adaptor molecule 1 (TICAM1) and their interactions with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in children. METHODS: Improved multiple ligase detection reaction assay was used for detecting the polymorphisms of nine tagging SNPs of the MyD88 and TICAM1 genes in 375 children with CAP who attended the Department of Pediatrics of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Yan'an University Medical School from August 2015 to September 2017 and 306 healthy children who underwent physical examination. A logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the association between the distribution of genotypes and their interactions with CAP in children. RESULTS: The polymorphism of the TICAM1 gene at rs11466711T/C locus was closely associated with the susceptibility to CAP in children (P<0.05). The AA genotype of rs35747610G/A locus significantly reduced risk of sepsis in children with CAP (P<0.05). The AA genotype of rs6510826G/A locus was significantly associated with the increase in C-reactive protein level in children with CAP (P<0.05). The GG genotype of the MyD88 gene at rs7744A/G locus significantly increased the risk of respiratory failure and circulatory failure (P<0.05). The multiplicative interactions between MyD88 gene rs7744A/G and TICAM1 gene rs11466711T/C, rs2292151G/A, rs35299700C/T, and rs35747610G/A loci were significantly associated with the susceptibility to CAP, the severity of CAP, and the risk of sepsis in children (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The gene polymorphisms of MyD88 and TICAM1 and their interactions are closely associated with CAP in children, with a synergistic effect on the development and progression of CAP in children.

Introduction: Poly(1,3-trimethylene carbonate) (PTMC) is a flexible amorphous polymer with good degradability and biocompatibility. The degradation of PTMC is critical for its application as a degradable polymer, more convenient and easy-to-control cross-linking strategies for preparing PTMC are required. Methods: The blends of poly(trimethylene carbonate) (PTMC) and cross-linked poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) were prepared by mixing photoactive PEGDA and PTMC and subsequently photopolymerizing the mixture with uv light. The physical properties and in vitro enzymatic degradation of the resultant PTMC/cross-linked PEGDA blends were investigated. Results: The results showed that the gel fraction of PTMC/cross-linked PEGDA blends increased while the swelling degree decreased with the content of PEGDA dosage. The results of in vitro enzymatic degradation confirmed that the degradation of PTMC/cross-linked PEGDA blends in the lipase solution occurred under the surface erosion mechanism, and the introduction of the uv cross-linked PEGDA significantly improved the resistance to lipase erosion of PTMC; the higher the cross-linking degree, the lower the mass loss. Discussion: The results indicated that the blends/cross-linking via PEGDA is a simple and effective strategy to tailor the degradation rate of PTMC.

Plasmalemma vesicle associated protein (PLVAP) is commonly considered to be specifically expressed in endothelial cells in which it localized to diaphragms of caveolae, fenestrae, and transendothelial channels. PLVAP is reported to be an important regulator of heart development and a novel target to promote cardiac repair in the ischemic heart. However, the dynamics of plvap expression in heart development, homeostasis and pathology have not been comprehensively described. In this study, we analyzed the temporal and spatial expression of plvap in mouse heart under different conditions. We found that, during embryonic and neonatal stages, PLVAP was detected in endocardial endothelial cells, epicardial mesothelial cells, and a small amount of coronary vascular endothelial cells. In adult heart, PLVAP was also identified in endocardial cells and a few coronary vascular endothelial cells. However, epicardial expression of PLVAP was lost during postnatal heart development and cannot be detected in mouse heart by immunostaining since 3-week-old. We also analyzed the expression of plvap in a model of cardiac hypertrophy and failure induced by transverse aortic constriction surgery, and identified expression of PLVAP in endocardial cells and coronary vascular endothelial cells in the injured heart. This study provides new evidence to better understand the role of plvap in mouse heart development and injury.

BACKGROUND: Personalisation strategies of ovarian stimulation for in vitro fertilisation (IVF)/ intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) treatments using exogenous follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) have been extensively studied over the past 20 years. This research aimed to develop a FSH population pharmacokinetic (PPK) model taking into account the contribution of gene polymorphisms in Chinese reproductive-age women. METHODS: Data from 173 patients undergoing GnRH agonist down-regulation long protocols of IVF/ICSI treatment were collected. PPK analysis was subsequently conducted using the nonlinear mixed-effect model (NONMEM) software. Several covariates, including 18 single nucleotide polymorphisms, demographic factors and biological characteristics, were evaluated. The final PPK model was extensively validated using bootstrapping and normalised prediction error distribution, as well as external validation on an independent group of 35 patients. RESULTS: FSH PPK was accurately described by a one-compartment model with first-order absorption. The typical population value of apparent clearance was estimated to be 0.81 L/h [relative standard errors (RSE) 5.3%] with an inter-individual variability (IIV) of 16.0%. The typical apparent distribution volume was 8.36 L (RSE 9.7%, 59.7% IIV), and the absorption rate constant was estimated to be 0.0444 h-1 (RSE 9.1%). Body weight, basal prolactin concentration and the gene ADIPOQ (rs1501299) showed a significant covariate effect on the FSH clearance rate and exposure concentration. Genotypes of THADA (rs12478601) significantly influenced the distribution volume. Simulation results indicated that patients with the TT genotype of THADA (rs12478601) required a longer time to reach steady state and had less fluctuation in FSH levels. Model evaluations showed that the final model accurately and precisely described the observed data and demonstrated effective prediction performance. CONCLUSION: PPK models of FSH have been developed, which could potentially be used for FSH dosage individualisation in the clinical setting. Biomimetic mechanosensors have profound implications for various areas, including health care, prosthetics, human‒machine interfaces, and robotics. As one of the most important parameters, the sensitivity of mechanosensors is intrinsically determined by the detection resolution to mechanical force. In this manuscript, we expand the force detection resolution of current biomimetic mechanosensors from the micronewton to nanonewton scale. We develop a nanocrack-based electronic whisker-type mechanosensor that has a detection resolution of 72.2 nN. We achieve the perception of subtle mechanical stimuli, such as tiny objects and airflow, and the recognition of surface morphology down to a 30 nm height, which is the finest resolution ever reported in biomimetic mechanosensors. More importantly, we explore the use of this mechanosensor in wearable devices for sensing gravity field orientation with respect to the body, which has not been previously achieved by these types of sensors. We develop a wearable smart system for sensing the body's posture and movements, which can be used for remote monitoring of falls in elderly people. In summary, the proposed device offers great advantages for not only improving sensing ability but also expanding functions and thus can be used in many fields not currently served by mechanosensors.

Prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) has been proved as a specific target for diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer (PCa). Recently, oxalyldiaminopropionic acid (ODAP)-Urea-based ligands showed the potential as a new scaffold for developing radiotracers to image PCa. In this study, we synthesized seven ODAP-Urea-Lys derivatives characterized with p-bromobenzyl group conjugated to lysine. The ligands showed medium-to-high potency, with Ki values ranging from 27.9 nM to 0.94 nM. The ligands could be efficiently radiolabeled with 68Ga, in high purity. Radioligands were stable and showed PSMA specific cellular uptake, in PSMA++ LNCaP cells and PSMA+ 22Rv1 cells over PSMA- PC3 cells. MicroPET imaging was performed in 22Rv1 tumor-bearing mice and 68Ga-ligand-1 showed the best characteristics among the seven ligands, with the highest tumor uptake (SUVmax: 0.56 ± 0.07). A biodistribution study was also performed. ODAP-Urea-Lys-p-bromobenzyl could be used to image prostate cancer in vivo, and the ligands could have high binding potency. The future investigation is still necessary to improve the tumor-specific uptake of this class of ligands and reducing the non-specific uptake in normal organs.

PsADH, an alcohol dehydrogenase originating in Pantoea sp. was characterized and found to convert a broad variety of fatty alcohols into their corresponding aldehydes, the substrates of alkane biosynthesis. By coupling PsADH with NpAD, a cyanobacterial aldehyde-deformylating oxygenase, and by optimizing the conditions of the enzyme-catalyzed reactions, we achieved a 52% conversion of 1-tetradecanol to tridecane. We further applied this system to generate alkanes ranging from C5-17. These alkanes can be used as biofuels, suggesting that introducing a suitable alcohol dehydrogenase is an effective strategy to utilize fatty alcohols for alkane production.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Microvascular and inflammatory mechanisms have been hypothesized to be involved in the pathophysiology of psychotic spectrum disorders (PSDs). However, data evaluating these hypotheses remain limited. STUDY DESIGN: We applied a three-compartment intravoxel incoherent motion free water imaging (IVIM-FWI) technique that estimates the perfusion fraction (PF), free water fraction (FW), and anisotropic diffusion of tissue (FAt) to examine microvascular and microstructural changes in gray and white matter in 55 young adults with a PSD compared to 37 healthy controls (HCs). STUDY RESULTS: We found significantly increased PF, FW, and FAt in gray matter regions, and significantly increased PF, FW, and decreased FAt in white matter regions in the PSD group versus HC. Furthermore, in patients, but not in the HC group, increased PF, FW, and FAt in gray matter and increased PF in white matter were significantly associated with poor performance on several cognitive tests assessing memory and processing speed. We additionally report significant associations between IVIM-FWI metrics and myo-inositol, choline, and N-acetylaspartic acid magnetic resonance spectroscopy imaging metabolites in the posterior cingulate cortex, which further supports the validity of PF, FW, and FAt as microvascular and microstructural biomarkers of PSD. Finally, we found significant relationships between IVIM-FWI metrics and the duration of psychosis in gray and white matter regions. CONCLUSIONS: The three-compartment IVIM-FWI model provides metrics that are associated with cognitive deficits and may reflect disease progression.

Exploring two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals materials with out-of-plane polarization and electromagnetic coupling is essential for the development of next-generation nano-memory devices. A novel class of 2D monolayer materials with predicted spin-polarized semi-conductivity, partially compensated antiferromagnetic (AFM) order, fairly high Curie temperature, and out-of-plane polarization is analyzed in this work for the first time. Based on density functional theory calculations, we systematically studied these properties in asymmetrically functionalized MXenes (Janus Mo2C)-Mo2CXX' (X, X' = F, O, and OH). Using ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) and phonon spectrum calculations, the thermal and dynamic stabilities of six functionalized Mo2CXX' were identified. Our DFT+U calculation results also provided a switching path for out-of-plane polarizations, where the reverse of electric polarization is driven by terminal-layer atom flipping. More importantly, strong coupling between magnetization and electric polarization originating from spin-charge interactions was observed in this system. Our results confirm that Mo2C-FO would be a novel monolayer electromagnetic material, and its magnetization can be modulated by electric polarization.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has greatly impacted people's lifestyles and changed the delivery of health interventions, especially interventions for community-dwelling older people with sarcopenia. OBJECTIVE: To summarize the components and explore the effectiveness of home-based interventions for improving sarcopenia and other health-related outcomes among community-dwelling older people with sarcopenia. DESIGN: Systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: The Cochrane Library, Scopus, EMBASE, Web of Science, CINAHL, Medline (via PubMed), and PsycINFO were searched for relevant papers published from January 1, 2010 to March 29, 2022. Only papers written in English were included. The modified version of Cochrane's risk-of-bias tool was used to assess the risks of bias in the included studies. The template for intervention description and replication checklist was used to summarize the intervention components. The mean difference (MD) or standard mean difference with a 95 % confidence interval (CI) was used to determine the effect size of studies using the same or different measuring methods. Random-effects models were in meta-analyses to pool the effects of home-based interventions on the included outcomes. RESULTS: After detailed screening and exclusion, 11 randomized controlled trials including 1136 older people with sarcopenia were included in our analyses. Three categories of home-based interventions were identified: exercise interventions, nutritional interventions, and combined exercise and nutritional interventions. The overall analysis of the outcomes (e.g., appendicular skeletal muscle mass index, lean mass, body fat mass, handgrip strength, and gait speed), showed that the effects of home-based exercise interventions were inconclusive. Compared with passive controls, home-based exercise interventions significantly improved knee extension strength (MD = 0.56 kg, 95 % CI: 0.09, 1.03, p = 0.020) and reduced the time required to complete the Timed Up and Go Test (MD = -1.41 s, 95 % CI: -2.28, -0.54, p = 0.001). Home-based nutritional interventions were effective in improving appendicular skeletal muscle mass (MD = 0.25 kg, 95 % CI: 0.02, 0.49, p = 0.030), gait speed (MD = 0.06 m/s, 95 % CI: 0.03, 0.09, p = 0.0001), and quality of life in terms of both the physical component summary (MD = 13.54, 95 % CI: 0.73, 26.34, p = 0.040) and mental component summary scores (MD = 8.69, 95 % CI: 2.98, 14.41, p = 0.003). CONCLUSION: Home-based exercise interventions have the potential to improve muscle strength and physical function, while home-based nutritional interventions are effective in increasing muscle mass, physical function, and quality of life. Both of these can be applied at home during and after the COVID-19 pandemic to alleviate sarcopenia and improve health-related outcomes in community-dwelling older people.

CsPbBr3, an inorganic halide perovskite, has attracted great interest in recent years due to its excellent photoelectric properties. In this paper, we report a high-performance position-sensitive detector and laser communication sensor based on a CsPbBr3/4H-SiC heterojunction that effectively exploits the lateral photovoltaic (LPV) effect. The X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectra, and photoluminescence data indicate that a high-quality CsPbBr3 film has been successfully obtained using pulsed laser deposition. The thickness of the CsPbBr3 film is shown to play a key role in the open-circuit voltage and linear LPV. A large position sensitivity (up to 827 mV/mm) of the LPV with a fast relaxation time is observed. Moreover, the shortest relaxation time of only 0.34 µs for 532 nm laser irradiation among counterparts is achieved in the detector under consideration. Furthermore, the position sensitivity and relaxation time of the LPV in the CsPbBr3/4H-SiC heterojunction show a weak dependence on the laser wavelength from 266 to 532 nm. The robust characteristics of fast relaxation time and high position sensitivity of the LPV make the CsPbBr3 junction a promising candidate for both laser communication sensors and self-powered high-performance position-sensitive detectors.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Gut microbiota dysbiosis induced by acute pancreatitis (AP) exacerbates pancreatic injury and systemic inflammatory responses. The alleviation of gut microbiota dysbiosis through faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is considered a potential strategy to reduce tissue damage and inflammation in many clinical disorders. Here, we aim to investigate the effect of gut microbiota and microbiota-derived metabolites on AP and further clarify the mechanisms associated with pancreatic damage and inflammation. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: AP rat and mouse models were established by administration of caerulein or sodium taurocholate in vivo. Pancreatic acinar cells were exposed to caerulein and lipopolysaccharide in vitro to simulate AP. KEY RESULTS: Normobiotic FMT alleviated AP-induced gut microbiota dysbiosis and ameliorated the severity of AP, including mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative damage and inflammation. Normobiotic FMT induced higher levels of NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide)-associated metabolites, particularly nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN). NMN administration mitigated AP-mediated mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative damage and inflammation by increasing pancreatic NAD+ levels. Similarly, overexpression of the NAD+ -dependent mitochondrial deacetylase sirtuin 3 (SIRT3) alleviated the severity of AP. Furthermore, SIRT3 deacetylated peroxiredoxin 5 (PRDX5) and enhanced PRDX5 protein expression, thereby promoting its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities in AP. Importantly, normobiotic FMT-mediated NMN metabolism induced SIRT3-PRDX5 pathway activation during AP. CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS: Gut microbiota-derived NMN alleviates the severity of AP by activating the SIRT3-PRDX5 pathway. Normobiotic FMT could be served as a potential strategy for AP treatment.
