RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The effectiveness of bone marrow mononuclear cells combined with core decompression in the treatment of femoral head necrosis is controversial. The purpose of this study was to conduct a meta-analysis and systematic review of the evaluation of bone marrow mononuclear cells combined with core decompression in the treatment of femoral head necrosis, and to compare the therapeutic effect of this method with that of core decompression alone, so as to provide a basis for subsequent research and clinical treatment. METHODS: We conducted detailed searches across four databases in Embase, PubMed, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library (up to October 2023), including eight studies with a total of 370 participants and 491 hip cases. This meta-analysis followed the Preferred Reporting Project (PRISMA) guidelines. Review Manager 5.4 was used to summarize and analyze the outcome indicators and the quality and reliability of the MAs were graded against a Measurement Tool to Assess Systematic Reviews 2 (AMSTAR 2). RESULTS: Eight studies were included inclusion criteria. The results of meta-analysis showed that the therapeutic effect of CD combined with BMMC on VAS was better than that of CD alone (MD =-5.32, 95%CI: -9.90, -0.74, P=0.02, I²=98%), and there was no statistically significant difference between CD combined with BMMC and CD alone in the treatment of HHS (MD =2.73, 95%CI: -2.63,8.09, P=0.32, I²=82%). We conducted sensitivity analysis, the results showed that CD joint BMMC treatment effect on the HHS is superior to the single CD (MD = 5.57, 95% CI: 1.94, 9.20, P = 0.003, I squared = 0%), both no significant differences in VAS (MD = 0.47, 95% CI: -1.74, 0.79, P=0.46, I²=83%). CONCLUSION: In this study, we found that core decompression combined with bone marrow monocyte therapy improved femoral head necrosis better than core decompression alone.

BACKGROUND: Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) is a traditional non-invasive therapy to treat osteonecrosis of the femur head (ONFH). This systematic review aims to investigate whether ESWT can improve the clinical function of ONFH and whether differences in improvement can be observed in radiographic outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two authors independently searched PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science for English articles until October 21, 2023. After screening and reading the literature, the two authors independently used corresponding scales to evaluate the quality of the included articles and extracted data. The key data extracted included the Harris Hip Score (HHS), Visual Analog Scale (VAS), changes in lesion size, the change in the Association Research Circulation Osseous (ARCO) stage, and bone marrow edema stage. RESULTS: Nine articles included 468 males and 248 females. The average age was 43.29 years and the mean follow-up time was 15.19 months. After receiving ESWT, five studies involving 146 hips showed a higher HHS (MD=-33.38; 95%CI, -46.31, -20.45), and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.00001). The average VAS before treatment was above 5, but it dropped to 1.2 after ESWT (MD=4.64; 95%CI, 3.63, 5.64), and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.00001). Three studies found no significant differences in the areas of femoral head necrosis before and after treatment with ESWT(MD=9.66; 95%CI, -0.36, 19.67; P=0.06; I2=84%). Two articles showed that the use of ESWT had no significant effect on the change in the ARCO stage (MD=1.11; 95%CI, 0.76, 1.62; P=0.60; I2=0%). Three studies indicated that using ESWT could improve the bone marrow edema symptom in the early stage of ONFH (MD=4.35; 95%CI, 1.32, 14.37; P=0.02; I2=62%). CONCLUSION: Based on the current evidence, ESWT shows promise as a therapy to enhance hip function and alleviate pain in the early stage of ONFH. With the advancement of more precise imaging techniques, ESWT can potentially reduce the area affected by ONFH. However, such reduction was not found to be statistically significant at the imaging level. Additionally, ESWT could improve symptoms of bone marrow edema in the early stage. However, no significant change in ARCO grade was observed with ESWT treatment.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is an age-dependent cell type-selective degenerative disease. Genetic studies indicate that amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is part of a spectrum of disorders, ranging from spinal muscular atrophy to frontotemporal dementia that share common pathological mechanisms. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis Type 8 is a familial disease caused by mis-sense mutations in VAPB. VAPB is localized to the cytoplasmic surface of the endoplasmic reticulum, where it serves as a docking point for cytoplasmic proteins and mediates inter-organelle interactions with the endoplasmic reticulum membrane. A gene knock-in model of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis Type 8 based on the VapBP56S mutation and VapB gene deletion has been generated in rats. These animals display a range of age-dependent phenotypes distinct from those previously reported in mouse models of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis Type 8. A loss of motor neurones in VapBP56S/+ and VapBP56S/P56S animals is indicated by a reduction in the number of large choline acetyl transferase-staining cells in the spinal cord. VapB-/- animals exhibit a relative increase in cytoplasmic TDP-43 levels compared with the nucleus, but no large protein aggregates. Concomitant with these spinal cord pathologies VapBP56S/+ , VapBP56S/P56S and VapB-/- animals exhibit age-dependent changes in paw placement and exerted pressures when traversing a CatWalk apparatus, consistent with a somatosensory dysfunction. Extramotor dysfunction is reported in half the cases of motor neurone disease, and this is the first indication of an associated sensory dysfunction in a rodent model of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Different rodent models may offer complementary experimental platforms with which to understand the human disease.

The hydrogen (H2) evolution rates of photocatalysts suffer from weak oxidation and reduction ability and low photogenerated charge carrier separation efficiency. Herein, by combining band-gap structure optimization and vacancy modulation through a one-step hydrothermal method, In2O3 containing oxygen vacancy (Ov/In2O3) is simply introduced into In2S3 to promote photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Specifically, the change in the sulfur source ratio can induce the coexistence of Ov/In2O3 and In2S3 in a high-temperature hydrothermal process. Under light irradiation, In2S3@Ov/In2O3-0.1 nanosheets hold a remarkable average H2 evolution rate up to 4.04 mmol g-1 h-1, which is 32.14, 11.91, and 2.25-fold better than those of pristine In2S3, In2S3@Ov/In2O3-0.02, and In2S3@Ov/In2O3-0.25 nanosheets, respectively. The ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) diffuse reflectance and photoluminescence (PL) spectra reveal that the formation of Ov/In2O3 in In2S3 optimizes the band-gap structure and accelerates the migration of the photogenerated charge carrier of In2S3@Ov/In2O3-x nanosheets, respectively. Both the enhancement of oxidation and reduction ability and photogenerated charge carrier separation ability are responsible for the remarkable improvement in photocatalytic H2 evolution performance. This work provides a new strategy to prepare a composite of metal sulfide and metal oxide through a one-step hydrothermal method.

Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) is an anaerobic and gram-positive bacterium involved in the pathogenesis and inflammation of acne vulgaris. This study particularly focuses on the antimicrobial effect of Lacticaseibacillus paracasei LPH01 against P. acnes, a bacterium that causes acne vulgaris. Fifty-seven Lactobacillus strains were tested for their ability to inhibit P. acnes growth employing the Oxford Cup and double dilution methods. The cell-free supernatant (CFS) of L. paracasei LPH01 demonstrated a strong inhibitory effect, with an inhibition zone diameter of 24.65 ± 0.27 mm and a minimum inhibitory concentration of 12.5 mg/mL. Among the CFS, the fraction over 10 kDa (CFS-10) revealed the best antibacterial effect. Confocal laser scanning microscopes and flow cytometry showed that CFS-10 could reduce cell metabolic activity and cell viability and destroy the integrity and permeability of the cell membrane. A scanning electron microscope revealed that bacterial cells exhibited obvious morphological and ultrastructural changes, which further confirmed the damage of CFS-10 to the cell membrane and cell wall. Findings demonstrated that CFS-10 inhibited the conversion of triglycerides, decreased the production of free fatty acids, and down-regulated the extracellular expression of the lipase gene. This study provides a theoretical basis for the metabolite of L. paracasei LPH01 as a potential antibiotic alternative in cosmeceutical skincare products.

RESUMEN

Superficial acral fibromyxoma, also known as digital fibromyxoma, is a slow-growing, benign, solitary soft tissue tumor. First described in 2001 by Fetsch et al., it is a condition that often occurs in middle-aged individuals. However, it has also been reported across a wide range of ages, ranging from 4 to 86 years, with males more commonly reported. The condition often presents as solitary soft tissue swelling over the periungual or subungual. We present the management experience of the rare presentation of this rare tumor and a detailed review of the past literature on this condition. Detailed management of the condition has been described, along with the outcome after 2 years of follow-up and treatment experience. Our detailed analysis shows that 2 years is the shortest duration of follow-up to rule out recurrence. Hence, most of the cases reported earlier had given the false sense of the recurrence rate of the tumor, which could lead to undertreatment of the condition. The purpose of this article is to allow the readers to understand better the tumor's characteristics with bone involvement and the tumor's diagnostic strategies and treatment options.

The effective and long-term treatment of cartilage defects is an unmet need among patients worldwide. In the past, several synthetic and natural biomaterials have been designed to support functional articular cartilage formation. However, they have mostly failed to enhance the terminal stage of chondrogenic differentiation, leading to scar tissue formation after the operation. Growth factors substantially regulate cartilage regeneration by acting on receptors to trigger intracellular signaling and cell recruitment for tissue regeneration. In this study, we investigated the effect of recombinant insulin-like growth factor 1 (rIGF-1), loaded in fibrin microbeads (FibIGF1), on cartilage regeneration. rIGF-1-loaded fibrin microbeads were injected into full-thickness cartilage defects in the knees of goats. The stability, integration, and quality of tissue repair were evaluated at 1 and 6 months by gross morphology, histology, and collagen type II staining. The in vivo results showed that compared to plain fibrin samples, particularly at 6 months, FibIGF1 improved the functional cartilage formation, confirmed through gross morphology, histology, and collagen type II immunostaining. FibIGF1 could be a promising candidate for cartilage repair in the clinic.

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is a chronic disease marked by gradual muscle system and functional decline. Prior research indicates its prevalence in those under 60 varies from 8 to 36%. There is limited evidence on the effectiveness of non-pharmacological interventions for sarcopenia prevention in menopausal women aged 40-60. This study examines the influence of such interventions for sarcopenia prevention on these women. METHODS: PubMed, EMBASE, Medline, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, PEDro, and Airiti Library were searched from inception until May 5, 2023. Randomized controlled trials that examined exercise, vitamin D and protein supplementation effects on muscle mass, strength, and physical function. Quality assessment used the Cochrane risk of bias tool, and analysis employed Comprehensive Meta-Analysis version 2.0. RESULTS: A total of 27 randomized controlled trials, involving 1,989 participants were identified. Meta-analysis results showed exercise improved lean body mass (SMD = 0.232, 95% CI: 0.097, 0.366), handgrip strength (SMD = 0.901, 95% CI: 0.362, 1.441), knee extension strength (SMD = 0.698, 95% CI: 0.384, 1.013). Resistance training had a small effect on lean body mass, longer exercise duration (> 12 weeks) and higher frequency (60-90 min, 3 sessions/week) showed small to moderate effects on lean body mass. Vitamin D supplementation improved handgrip strength (SMD = 0.303, 95% CI: 0.130, 0.476), but not knee extension strength. There was insufficient data to assess the impact of protein supplementation on muscle strength. CONCLUSIONS: Exercise effectively improves muscle mass, and strength in menopausal women. Resistance training with 3 sessions per week, lasting 20-90 min for at least 6 weeks, is most effective. Vitamin D supplementation enhances small muscle group strength. Further trials are needed to assess the effects of vitamin D and protein supplementation on sarcopenia prevention. REGISTRATION NUMBER: This review was registered on PROSPERO CRD42022329273.

The impacts of probiotics on maintaining the host's intestinal health have been extensively confirmed. Organoid technology revolutionizes intestinal health research by providing a unique platform to study the effects of probiotics. It overcomes challenges posed by animal models and 2D cell models in accurately simulating the in vivo environment. This review summarizes the development of intestinal organoid technology and its potential applications in intestinal health research as well as highlights the regulatory mechanisms of probiotics on intestinal health, which have been revealed using intestinal organoid technology. Furthermore, an overview of its potential applications in probiotic research has also been provided. This review aims to improve the understanding of intestinal organoid technology's applications in this field as well as to contribute to its further development.

Voice banking involves recording an inventory of sentences produced via natural speech. The recordings are used to create a synthetic text-to-speech voice that can be installed on speech-generating devices. This study highlights a minimally researched, clinically relevant issue surrounding the development and evaluation of Singaporean-accented English synthetic voices that were created using readily available voice banking software and hardware. Processes used to create seven unique synthetic voices that produce Singaporean-accented English, and the development of a custom Singaporean Colloquial English (SCE) recording inventory, are reviewed. The perspectives of adults who spoke SCE and banked their voices for this project are summarized and were generally positive. Finally, 100 adults familiar with SCE participated in an experiment that evaluated the intelligibility and naturalness of the Singaporean-accented synthetic voices, as well as the effect of the SCE custom inventory on listener preferences. The addition of the custom SCE inventory did not affect intelligibility or naturalness of the synthetic speech, and listeners tended to prefer the voice created with the SCE inventory when the stimulus was an SCE passage. The procedures used in this project may be helpful for interventionists who wish to create synthetic voices with accents that are not commercially available.

OBJECTIVE: This is a study on the demographics and clinical outcomes including the response to therapy of patients with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) over the past decade. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All histologically proven FSGS cases diagnosed between 2008 and 2018 were analyzed for their clinical, laboratory, and histological characteristics including treatment that could influence the disease progression and renal outcome of these patients. We used the Columbia Classification for FSGS for the renal biopsy. RESULTS: There were two subgroups of FSGS patients; those with nephrotic syndrome and those without nephrotic syndrome. Patients with FSGS with non-nephrotic syndrome had poorer survival rates compared to the nephrotic group. For those without nephrotic syndrome, the indices responsible for progression involved more tubular and blood vessel lesions in addition to glomerular pathology compared to those with nephrotic syndrome. Patients with FSGS with nephrotic syndrome responded to immunosuppressants more favorably compared to the non-nephrotic group, though both groups responded with decreasing proteinuria. The nephrotic group had a better 10-year long-term survival rate of 92 vs. 72% for the non-nephrotic group (log-rank 0.002). The 10-year survival for the whole group of FSGS patients was 64%. CONCLUSION: Our data suggest that in FSGS, one of the significant components of the disease is the vascular and tubular damage, apart from the underlying glomerular pathology, resulting in varying responses to therapy, and the difference is reflected in inherently poorer response to immunosuppressant therapy in those without nephrotic syndrome as opposed to those with nephrotic syndrome, who responded to immunosuppressant therapy (IST) with stabilization of renal function and had less blood vessel and tubular lesions.

BACKGROUND: Patients with multiple myeloma and high serum levels of circulating free light chains (FLC) have increased risk of acute kidney injury (AKI) secondary to cast nephropathy and is associated with poor survival. Despite removal of FLC by medium cutoff (MCO) dialyzer, the role of MCO hemodialysis (HD) in the treatment of cast nephropathy and its clinical benefits remain unknown. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted to establish the effectiveness of MCO dialyzer and clinical outcomes, compared to other forms of dialyzers in the removal of FLC, in myeloma patients with AKI. The primary outcome was effectiveness of MCO-HD in reducing serum FLC. The secondary outcomes were HD independence, estimated glomerular filtrate rate, mortality rates, length of hospitalization, rebound of serum FLC before the next dialysis, removal of other molecules during dialysis, and adverse events. RESULTS: We identified three case series, with a total of 17 patients. There were no randomized controlled trials (RCTs) or cohort studies. These case series showed that MCO dialyzer was effective in the removal of FLC and led to a reduction in FLC concentration post-dialysis. The majority of the case series did not have comparator arm and renal and/or other clinical outcomes. CONCLUSION: MCO dialyzer appeared to be effective in the removal of FLC based on the existing limited data. However, more data, particularly large-scale RCTs, are needed to assess the use of MCO dialyzer in reducing serum FLC and its effect on clinical outcomes in patients with multiple myeloma and AKI.

INTRODUCTION: Double-filtration plasmapheresis (DFPP) has been utilized for immunomodulation in kidney transplantation. Anticoagulation is important to maintain circuit patency during DFPP. We aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of regional citrate anticoagulation (RCA) with systemic heparin anticoagulation during DFPP in kidney transplant recipients. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted to compare the efficacy and safety of RCA (RCA-DFPP) to systemic heparin anticoagulation (Hep-DFPP) for DFPP among kidney transplant recipients in a single tertiary center. RESULTS: A total of 112 sessions of DFPP were performed for 23 subjects, of which 62 sessions were RCA-DFPP and 50 sessions were Hep-DFPP. There were 13 sessions (11.6%) of premature circuit clotting, 10 sessions (16.1%) for RCA-DFPP and 3 sessions (6.0%) for Hep-DFPP (P = .10). All premature circuit clotting episodes occurred in subjects who underwent DFPP through a vascular catheter. Premature circuit clotting was associated with the use of a vascular catheter (odds ratio [OR] 14.2, 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.7-73.7; P < .01) and high postfilter ionized calcium (OR 12.7, 95% CI 1.4-112.5; P < .01). There was no major bleeding event. Hep-DFPP was associated with higher occurrence of hypocalcemia (OR 1.1, 95% CI 1.0-1.2; P < .01) and metabolic acidosis (OR 1.4, 95% CI 1.2-2.0; P = .04), while hypomagnesemia was more common for RCA-DFPP (OR 2.9, 95% CI 1.1-7.4; P = .03). CONCLUSION: Amongst kidney transplant patients who receive DFPP therapy, RCA-DFPP may be comparable to Hep-DFPP for the maintenance of circuit patency. Functioning vascular access is vital in avoiding premature clotting of the circuit. Close monitoring of electrolyte imbalances and coagulopathy related to DFPP is recommended.

The brown planthopper (BPH) is the leading cause of insect damage to rice plants and BPH infestations have caused profound losses in rice production since the 1970's. There is an urgent need to discover new BPH resistance genes to ensure the successful production of rice. Here, a new BPH resistance source provided by SeedWorks International Pvt. Ltd., SWD10, was used for this purpose. QTL mapping using 232 F2 progenies and 216 polymorphic markers revealed two dominant BPH resistance QTLs, BPH41 and BPH42, located on chromosome 4. BPH resistance mechanism test revealed that antibiosis and antixenosis mechanisms both play a role in BPH resistance conferred by these two QTLs. The QTLs were delimited between markers SWRm_01617 and SWRm_01522 for BPH41, and SWRm_01695 and SWRm_00328 for BPH42. Additionally, using RNA-seq data of lines containing the resistant QTLs, we shortlisted four and three gene candidates for BPH41 and BPH42, respectively. Differential gene expression analysis of lines containing the QTLs suggested that SWD10 BPH resistance is contributed by the plant's innate immunity and the candidate genes may be part of the rice innate immunity pathway. Currently, the newly identified QTLs are being utilized for breeding BPH resistant rice varieties and hybrids.

INTRODUCTION: Double-filtration plasmapheresis (DFPP) may be used for immunomodulation in kidney transplant (KTx). While DFPP reduces plasma product exposure, risk of circuit clotting merits adequate anticoagulation. Regional citrate anticoagulation (RCA) avoids the risks of systemic anticoagulation, but a protocol for RCA-DFPP is not previously widely described. METHODS: We conducted a single-center retrospective cohort study involving adult (≥21 years old) KTx recipients who underwent RCA-DFPP from 2018 to 2020 to investigate efficacy and safety for an RCA protocol during DFPP in KTx recipients. RESULTS: Fifty-one (85%) of 60 RCA-DFPP sessions in 17 patients completed without circuit clotting. Circuit clotting was associated with high post-filter ionized calcium (28 vs. 3.7%, odds ratio 10.1, 95% CI 1.1-89.4, p = 0.037). Hypo- and hypercalcemia developed in 5 (8.3%) and 8 (13.3%) sessions, respectively, but no adverse effects were noted despite severe hypocalcemia in one. There was no significant change in pre- and post-RCA-DFPP sodium, bicarbonate, albumin, and platelet levels. With regards DFPP procedure, prolongation of prothrombin time (PT) and activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) was observed following 38 (64.4%) and 12 (20.3%) sessions, respectively. Severely prolonged (>1.5 × upper limit normal) PT and aPTT were recorded in 2 sessions each. Expectedly, hypofibrinogenemia developed after 31 (51.7%) sessions: including 4 (6.7%) severe hypofibrinogenemia (<0.5 g/L). Two patients developed bleeding requiring blood product transfusion. The median total volume of fluids administered per session was 1.495 (1.373-1.612) L; post-RCA-DFPP significant weight gain of 0.5 (0-1.25) kg was noted. Diuretic was commenced or dose increased following 20 (33.3%) sessions for fluid balance management. DISCUSSION/CONCLUSION: Protocol-based RCA for DFPP is feasible and safe in KTx recipients. However, DFPP-related coagulopathy can develop consequent to treatment; caution should be exercised for patients with bleeding risk. Close monitoring and management of the patients' electrolytes, especially hypocalcemia and hypomagnesemia, and fluid status is recommended.

In the fight against COVID-19, the Pfizer and BioNTech vaccine announcement marked a significant turning point. Analysing the topics discussed surrounding the announcement is critical to shed light on how people respond to the vaccination against COVID-19. Specifically, since the COVID-19 vaccine was developed at unprecedented speed, different segments of the public with a different understanding of the issues may react and respond differently. We analysed Twitter tweets to uncover the issues surrounding people's discussion of the vaccination against COVID-19. Through the use of Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), nine topics were identified pertaining to vaccine-related tweets. We analysed the temporal differences in the nine topics, prior and after the official vaccine announcement.

Elucidating how synaptic molecules such as AMPA receptors mediate neuronal communication and tracking their dynamic expression during behavior is crucial to understand cognition and disease, but current technological barriers preclude large-scale exploration of molecular dynamics in vivo. We have developed a suite of innovative methodologies that break through these barriers: a new knockin mouse line with fluorescently tagged endogenous AMPA receptors, two-photon imaging of hundreds of thousands of labeled synapses in behaving mice, and computer vision-based automatic synapse detection. Using these tools, we can longitudinally track how the strength of populations of synapses changes during behavior. We used this approach to generate an unprecedentedly detailed spatiotemporal map of synapses undergoing changes in strength following sensory experience. More generally, these tools can be used as an optical probe capable of measuring functional synapse strength across entire brain areas during any behavioral paradigm, describing complex system-wide changes with molecular precision.

BACKGROUND: Many people have experienced novel coronavirus pneumonia since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in Wuhan, China. The Chinese government has encouraged people to wear face masks in public places; however, due to the large population, there may be a series of problems related to this recommendation, including shortages of masks and lack of an optimal disposal method for used masks. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to understand the current status of mask shortages and used masks in China. METHODS: A questionnaire survey was designed to assess the current status of mask shortages and used masks. The differences among groups were analyzed with chi-square tests. RESULTS: The constituent ratio of those who reuse masks was 61%. Obtaining masks from the drugstore was reported to be very difficult due to high demand and short supply, and approximately 1/3 of the respondents purchased expensive masks. Most people know how to properly handle used masks, and only 7% of them casually discard masks. However, 50% of respondents have seen others throw away used masks at will. A further subgroup analysis showed that respondents in Central China tended to use masks repeatedly, as did medical personnel. Females, people living in the central region, and medical personnel may find it more difficult to purchase masks in drugstores. Non-medical personnel may be more likely to buy expensive masks. Females, people living in the western region, and medical personnel may be more likely to know how to properly handle used masks and not to discard used masks at will. Medical personnel may be more likely to observe others discarding used masks at will. CONCLUSION: In response to COVID-19, the public should be encouraged to use face masks and are advised not to reuse or throw away masks at will due to safety concerns.

(1) Background: The implementation of effective control measures in a timely fashion is crucial to control the epidemic outbreak of COVID-19. In this study, we aimed to analyze the control measures implemented during the COVID-19 outbreak, as well as evaluating the responses and outcomes at different phases for epidemic control in Taiwan. (2) Methods: This case study reviewed responses to COVID-19 and the effectiveness of a range of control measures implemented for epidemic control in Taiwan and assessed all laboratory-confirmed cases between 11 January until 20 December 2020, inclusive of these dates. The confirmation of COVID-19 infection was defined as the positive result of a reverse-transcriptase-polymerase-chain-reaction test taken from a nasopharyngeal swab. Test results were reported by the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control. The incidence rate, mortality rate, and testing rate were compiled, and the risk ratio was provided to gain insights into the effectiveness of prevention measures. (3) Results and Discussion: This study presents retrospective data on the COVID-19 incidence rate in Taiwan, combined with the vital preventive control measures, in a timeline of the early stage of the epidemic that occurred in Taiwan. The implementation of multiple strategy control measures and the assistance of technologies to control the COVID-19 epidemic in Taiwan led to a relatively slower trend in the outbreak compared to the neighboring countries. In Taiwan, 766 confirmed patients were included, comprised of 88.1% imported cases and 7.2% local transmission cases, within the studied period. The incidence rate of COVID-19 in Taiwan during the studied period was 32 per million people, with a mortality rate of 0.3 per million people. Our analysis showed a significantly raised incidence risk ratio in the countries of interest in comparison to Taiwan during the study period; in the range of 1.9 to 947.5. The outbreak was brought under control through epidemic policies and hospital strategies implemented by the Taiwan Government. (4) Conclusion: Taiwan's preventive strategies resulted in a drastically lower risk for Taiwan nationals of contracting COVID-19 when new pharmaceutical drug or vaccines were not yet available. The preventive strategies employed by Taiwan could serve as a guide and reference for future epidemic control strategies.

AMPA receptor (AMPAR) mobility within synapses has been extensively studied in vitro However, whether similar mobility properties apply to AMPARs in vivo has yet to be determined. Here, we use two-photon fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP) to study AMPAR mobility within individual dendritic spines in live animals using an overexpression vector. We demonstrate the existence of mobile and immobile fractions of AMPARs across multiple cortical regions and layers. Additionally, we find that AMPAR mobility can be altered in vivo in response to administration of corticosterone, a condition that mimics exposure to stress.
