RESUMEN

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) release Ag ions with potent bactericidal and anti-inflammatory effects. They have shown promising results as an intracanal medicament for removing Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis), a resistant bacterium associated with root canal failures. This review summarizes the role of AgNPs as an intracanal medicament. Original research articles on AgNPs as an intracanal medicament were searched in databases such as MEDLINE (PubMed), Scopus, and Embase, resulting in 24 studies. They showed that AgNPs effectively eliminated E. faecalis and reduced postoperative pain following root canal therapy. However, these effects should be further verified through clinical trials as most of the studies were in vitro.

RESUMEN

Introduction: The first step in any complete oral health care plan for a child is a thorough caries risk assessment (CRA). This study aimed to investigate whether the practice dentists in Saudi Arabia's Western province do CRA methods and offer Individualized Caries Prevention (ICP) to their pediatric patients. Material and Methods: Dentists in active clinical practice in the Western province of Saudi Arabia were the participants of this cross-sectional survey. The participants in this study were chosen using a simple random sampling technique. A self-administered, structured questionnaire was used to gather participants' responses. Results: A majority (88.2%) of the dentists agreed that it is very important to practice CRA on a regular basis among their pediatric patients. About 67% of dentists employed Individualized Caries Prevention methods. No statistically significant correlation was observed between ICP and CRA factors, indicating that interventions primarily focused on patients' financial affordability. Conclusion: Dentists should encourage parents/caregivers to establish a dental home concept at the earliest, which includes CRA, education, and anticipatory guidance on the prevention of oral diseases.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: The main goal was to explore the relationship between hand grip strength (HGS), the thickness of the skinfold at multiple sites, and the trunk flexor (TF) and extensor (TE) muscle strength among healthy participants. METHODS: We employed a cross-sectional design and randomly recruited 40 participants. Ultimately, only 39 participants were included. First, measurements for demographic and anthropometric variables were carried out. After that, the evaluation of hand grip strength and skinfold was performed. DATA ANALYSIS: Descriptive statistics were used to explore the amount of interaction between the smoking and nonsmoking groups, and a repeated measures analysis of variance was employed. Furthermore, associations between dependent and independent variables were discovered through a multiple linear regression model. RESULTS: The participants had a mean age of 21.59 ± 1.19 years. The results of the repeated measures analysis of variance validated an acceptable interaction between the trunk and hand grip strength at a significance level of p < 0.01, further emphasized by their moderate association (p < 0.05). Multiple regressions between TE, TF, the independent variables T score, height, and age were also significant (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The trunk muscle strength can be used as a health indicator for comprehensive evaluation. The present study also found a moderate relationship between hand grip strength, trunk strength, and T score.

RESUMEN

Dental therapists encounter patients with various systemic diseases of which cardiovascular disease (CVD) patients form a significant segment. Relation between oral health and cardiac diseases has been well established. Common cardiac disorders encountered in a dental practice include arterial hypertension, heart failure, ischemic heart disease, cardiac arrhythmias, infective endocarditis, stroke, and cardiac pacemaker. Patients with CVDs pose a significant challenge to dental therapy. These patients need special considerations and an adequate understanding of the underlying cardiovascular condition to provide safe and effective dental treatment. Based on the cardiac condition, an appropriate modification in dental care is crucial. A multidisciplinary approach including the patient's cardiologist can potentially reduce complications and improve dental treatment results. This review aims at unfolding the risks associated with the dental management of a cardiac patient and outlines the measures to be undertaken for optimum dental treatment.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: This study aimed to investigate the remineralization potential of two concentrations of theobromine (100 mg/L and 200 mmg/L) with fluoridated dentifrice, NovaMin, and nanohydroxyapatite using DIAGNOdent, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two sections were taken from 50 teeth each. Artificial carious lesions were induced using demineralizing solution. Evaluation using DIAGNOdent, SEM, and EDX analysis for elemental evaluation of Ca/P ratio and fluoride ion was carried out. Teeth sections were then randomly assigned to five different groups: (1) fluoridated dentifrice (Colgate™, Colgate -Palmolive, India), Novamine- Shy NM™, Group pharamaceuticals, India), 3. Nano-hydroxyapatite- Remin Pro™, Voco, Germany) 4. 100mg and 5. 200mg of Theobromine toothpaste (Theodent classic™, Rennou, UK-853069003006). Remineralization was carried out for 14 days with two applications per day. Samples were reanalyzed using DIAGNOdent, SEM, and EDX. RESULTS: A Tukey post-hoc test revealed statistically significant difference between NovaMin and all the other toothpastes (P < 0.001) for DIAGNOdent readings. On performing SEM-EDX analysis, it was seen that all agents had remineralization potential; however, no significant difference was found. CONCLUSION: Theobromine can be used as an effective novel remineralizing agent alternative to the already-available agents.
