BACKGROUND: Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are mediators between cancer cells and other types of cells, such as tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs), in the tumor microenvironment. EVs can remodel the tumor microenvironment and regulate tumor progression. However, the underlying molecular mechanism of these interactions remains unclear. METHODS: First, we explored the effect of TAMs on the survival prognosis of patients with ovarian cancer. Next, we isolated EVs derived from ovarian cancer cells (OV-EVs) through ultracentrifugation and analyzed the capacity of OV-EVs to regulate macrophage polarization in ovarian tumors and in whole peripheral blood. Moreover, we explored the roles of OV-EVs-induced macrophages in tumor progression through in vitro and in vivo assays. RESULTS: OV-EVs were encapsulated by macrophages and induced the polarization of macrophages toward the M2 phenotype. Moreover, OV-EVs-induced M2 macrophages promoted angiogenesis and cancer progression both in vitro and in vivo. In addition, OV-EVs-induced macrophages increased the expression level of VEGF and increased the expression level of VEGFR in tumors, which resulted in angiogenesis in ovarian cancer. CONCLUSIONS: The present study demonstrated that OV-EVs induce M2 polarization in macrophages and promote the progression of ovarian cancer. This study provides novel insight into the mechanism of ovarian cancer progression.

Immunodeficiency can disrupt normal physiological activity and function. In this study, donkey bone collagen peptide (DP) and its iron chelate (DPI) were evaluated their potential as immunomodulators in cyclophosphamide (Cytoxan®, CTX)-induced Balb/c mice. The femoral tissue, lymphocytes, and serum from groups of mice were subjected to hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining, methylthiazolyldiphenyl-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) cell proliferation assays, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), respectively. Furthermore, a non-targeted metabolomics analysis based on UPLC-MS/MS and a reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) technology were used to explore the specific metabolic pathways of DPI regulating immunocompromise. The results showed that CTX was able to significantly reduce the proliferative activity of mouse splenic lymphocytes and led to abnormal cytokine expression. After DP and DPI interventions, bone marrow tissue damage was significantly improved. In particular, DPI showed the ability to regulate the levels of immune factors more effectively than Fe2+ and DP. Furthermore, metabolomic analysis in both positive and negative ion modes showed that DPI and DP jointly regulated the levels of 20 plasma differential metabolites, while DPI and Fe2+ jointly regulated 14, and all 3 jointly regulated 10. Fe2+ and DP regulated energy metabolism and pyrimidine metabolism pathways, respectively. In contrast, DPI mainly modulated the purine salvage pathway and the JAK/STAT signaling pathway, which are the key to immune function. Therefore, DPI shows more effective immune regulation than Fe2+ and DP alone, and has good application potential in improving immunosuppression.

RESUMEN

Ferroptosis is an iron-dependent form of programmed cell death triggered by the excessive accumulation of lipid peroxides on the cell membrane. Recent studies have found that ferroptosis can be induced by exposure of the testis tissue and germ cells to some high-risk factors, accompanied by various characteristic reproductive system injuries, including changes in cell morphology, ferroptosis-related physicochemical indicators and gene expressions. This review focuses on the association of ferroptosis with male reproductive system diseases from three key aspects: iron metabolism abnormalities, Cystine/GSH/GPX4 axis imbalance, and lipid peroxidation.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) hold great promise for rechargeable batteries. However, the synthesis of COFs with abundant active sites, excellent stability, and increased conductivity remains a challenge. Here, chemically stable fully sp2 carbon-conjugated COFs (sp2c-COFs) with multiple active sites are designed by the polymerization of benzo[1,2-b:3,4-b':5,6-b'']trithiophene-2,5,8-tricarbaldehyde) (BTT) and s-indacene-1,3,5,7(2H,6H)-tetrone (ICTO) (denoted as BTT-ICTO). The morphology and structure of the COF are precisely regulated from "butterfly-shaped" to "cable-like" through an in-situ controllable growth strategy, significantly promoting the exposure and utilization of active sites. When the unique "cable-like" BTT-ICTO@CNT is employed as lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) cathode, it exhibits exceptional capacity (396 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 with 97.9% active sites utilization rate), superb rate capacity (227 mAh g-1 at 5.0 A g-1), and excellent cycling performance (184 mAh g-1 over 8000 cycles at 2.0 A g-1 with 0.00365% decay rate per cycle). The lithium storage mechanism of BTT-ICTO is exhaustively revealed by in-situ Fourier transform infrared, in-situ Raman, and density functional theory calculations. This work provides in-depth insights into fully sp2c-COFs with multiple active sites for high-performance LIBs.

Objective: This study aims to elucidate the clinical features observed in cases of pediatric acute myeloid leukemia (AML) initially presenting with cardiac tamponade and to share treatment experiences. Materials and methods: Five pediatric patients were initially diagnosed with AML accompanied by cardiac myeloid sarcoma (MS). The diagnosis was established by examining our hospital records and reviewing pertinent literature from 1990 to July 2023, accessible through MEDLINE/PubMed. We comprehensively assessed the clinical characteristics and treatment modalities employed for these patients. Result: Five pediatric patients presented with acute symptoms, including shortness of breath, malaise, cough, and fever, leading to their hospitalization. Physical examination revealed irritability, hypoxia, tachypnea, tachycardia, and hypotension. Initial detection utilized chest X-ray or echocardiogram, leading to subsequent diagnoses based on pericardial effusion and/or bone marrow examination. Two patients received chemotherapy at the time of initial diagnosis, one with cytarabine and etoposide, and the other with cytarabine and cladribine. Post-treatment, their bone marrow achieved remission, and over a 2.5-year follow-up, their cardiac function remained favorable. Unfortunately, the remaining three patients succumbed within two weeks after diagnosis, either due to receiving alternative drugs or without undergoing chemotherapy. Conclusion: This is the first and largest case series of pediatric AML patients with cardiac MS, manifesting initially with cardiac tamponade. It highlights the rarity and high mortality associated with this condition. The critical factors for reducing mortality include identifying clinical manifestations, conducting thorough physical examinations, performing echocardiography promptly, initiating early and timely pericardial drainage, and avoiding cardiotoxic chemotherapy medications.

BACKGROUND: Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) secondary to acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is a rare disease with poor prognosis, usually attributed to delayed diagnosis. To date, only four cases of ALL developing DLBCL have been reported, while none of them exhibiting central nervous system (CNS) symptoms. CASE DESCRIPTION: Here, we report an unusual case of a 15-year-old boy diagnosed with ALL and treated based on the SCCLG-ALL 2016 protocol. While he was receiving maintenance treatment, the patient developed dizziness and vomiting. An Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-positive DLBCL with CNS involvement was diagnosed from inguinal lymph nodes biopsy, EBV DNA tests and head magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Meanwhile, a dramatic decrease of immune cells and immunoglobulin was detected in the occurrence of DLBCL. He received therapy based on SCCCG-NHL-2017 protocol immediately after the diagnosis. CONCLUSIONS: We present the first retrospective report of four cases of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) secondary to ALL between 1990 and 2022. The pathogenesis of secondary DLBCL may be related to infection, immunodeficiency, genetic susceptibility, and treatment. Thus, the detection of EBV DNA during the full course of ALL therapy and genetic tests were needed in the occurrence of secondary DLBCL. Given to the rare rate and insufficient treatment experience, longer follow-up and enough sample size are needed.

Increasing evidence supported that oxidative stress induced by herniated lumbar disc played important role in the formation of lumbar disc herniation sciatica (LDHS), however, the neural mechanisms underlying LDHS need further clarification. Endomorphin-2 (EM2) is the endogenous ligand for mu-opioid receptor (MOR), and there is increasing evidence implicating the involvement of spinal EM2 in neuropathic pain. In this study, using an nucleus pulposus implantation induced LDHS rat model that displayed obvious mechanical allodynia, it was found that the expression of EM2 in dorsal root ganglion (DRG) and spinal cord was significantly decreased. It was further found that oxidative stress in DRG and spinal cord was significantly increased in LDHS rats, and the reduction of EM2 in DRG and spinal cord was determined by oxidative stress dominated increment of dipeptidylpeptidase IV activity. A systemic treatment with antioxidant could prevent the forming of mechanical allodynia in LDHS rats. In addition, MOR expression in DRG and spinal cord remained unchanged in LDHS rats. Intrathecal injection of MOR antagonist promoted pain behavior in LDHS rats, and the analgesic effect of intrathecal injection of EM2 was stronger than that of endomorphin-1 and morphine. Taken together, our findings suggest that oxidative stress mediated decrement of EM2 in DRG and spinal cord causes the loss of endogenous analgesic effects and enhances the pain sensation of LDHS.

Background: For cesarean delivery (CD), the 90% effective dosage (ED90) of oxytocin for a first bolus has been established. It is not yet known how much oxytocin to inject into obese women undergoing elective discectomy to keep their uterine tone (UT) appropriate. We hypothesized that patients who are overweight need a greater dose of oxytocin infusion; thus, we aimed to determine how the dose-response curve for oxytocin infusion changes following an initial 1 international unit (IU) bolus in obese women undergoing elective CD. Methods: One hundred parturients with a body mass index (BMI) greater than 30 kg/m2 were randomly assigned to receive an infusion rate of 14, 18, 22, or 26 IU/h of oxytocin. When the uterine palpation is as hard as touching the forehead or tip of the nose, it is considered sufficient UT according to the criteria used by obstetricians. The median effective dose (ED50) and ED90 values were determined using probit analysis. Results: We found the ED50 and ED90 values for the infusion dose of oxytocin were around 11.0 IU/h and 19.1 IU/h, respectively. Each group had a different number of parturients who needed rescued oxytocin: 14 IU/h for six, 18 IU/h for three, one for 22 IU/h, and none for 26 IU/h. The correlation between the frequency of rescued oxytocin administration and the amount of oxytocin infusion needed to avoid uterine atony was statistically significant (p = 0.02). Conclusion: The present research showed that the most effective dosage of oxytocin infusion for obese parturients undergoing elective CD is 19.1 IU/h, following an initial loading dose of 1 IU. Patients with obesity should receive a greater dosage of prophylactic oxytocin, and further studies comparing patients with and without obesity (with higher BMI) are required. In this study, composite gel was prepared from konjac glucomannan (KGM) and fibrin (FN). Composite gels with different concentration ratios were compared in terms of their mechanical properties, rheological properties, water retention, degradation rate, microstructure and biocompatibility. The results showed that the composite gels had better gel strength and other properties than non-composite gels. In particular, composite hydrogels with low Young's modulus formed when the KGM concentration was 0.8% and the FN concentration was 1.2%. The two components were cross linked through hydrogen-bond interaction, which formed a more stable gel structure with excellent water retention and in-vitro degradation rates, which were conducive to myogenic differentiation of ectomesenchymal stem cells (EMSCs). KGM-FN composite gel was applied to the preparation of cell-culture meat, which had similar texture properties and main nutrients to animal meat as well as higher content of dry base protein and dry base carbohydrate.

Cyclotides are a type of defense peptide most commonly found in the Violaceae family of plants, exhibiting various biological activities. In this study, we focused on the Viola japonica as our research subject and conducted transcriptome sequencing and analysis using high-throughput transcriptomics techniques. During this process, we identified 61 cyclotides, among which 25 were previously documented, while the remaining 36 were designated as vija 1 to vija 36. Mass spectrometry detection showed that 21 putative cyclotides were found in the extract of V. japonica. Through isolation, purification and tandem mass spectrometry, we characterized and investigated the activities of five cyclotides. Our results demonstrated inhibitory effects of these cyclotides on the growth of Acinetobacter baumannii and Bacillus subtilis, with minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of 4.2 µM and 2.1 µM, respectively. Furthermore, time killing kinetic assays revealed that cyclotides at concentration of 4 MICs achieved completely bactericidal effects within 2 h. Additionally, fluorescence staining experiments confirmed that cyclotides disrupt microbial membranes. Moreover, cytotoxicity studies showed that cyclotides possess cytotoxic effects, with IC50 values ranging from 0.1 to 3.5 µM. In summary, the discovery of new cyclotide sequences enhances our understanding of peptide diversity and the exploration of their activity lays the foundation for a deeper investigation into the mechanisms of action of cyclotides.

Background: In the spectrum of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and related disorders, the resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) signals within the cerebral cortex may exhibit distinct characteristics across various frequency ranges. Nevertheless, this hypothesis has not yet been substantiated within the broader context of whole-brain functional connectivity. This study aims to explore potential modifications in degree centrality (DC) and voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity (VMHC) among individuals with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) and AD, while assessing whether these alterations differ across distinct frequency bands. Methods: This investigation encompassed a total of 53 AD patients, 40 aMCI patients, and 40 healthy controls (HCs). DC and VMHC values were computed within three distinct frequency bands: classical (0.01-0.08 Hz), slow-4 (0.027-0.073 Hz), and slow-5 (0.01-0.027 Hz) for the three respective groups. To discern differences among these groups, ANOVA and subsequent post hoc two-sample t-tests were employed. Cognitive function assessment utilized the mini-mental state examination (MMSE) and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). Pearson correlation analysis was applied to investigate the associations between MMSE and MoCA scores with DC and VMHC. Results: Significant variations in degree centrality (DC) were observed among different groups across diverse frequency bands. The most notable differences were identified in the bilateral caudate nucleus (CN), bilateral medial superior frontal gyrus (mSFG), bilateral Lobule VIII of the cerebellar hemisphere (Lobule VIII), left precuneus (PCu), right Lobule VI of the cerebellar hemisphere (Lobule VI), and right Lobule IV and V of the cerebellar hemisphere (Lobule IV, V). Likewise, disparities in voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity (VMHC) among groups were predominantly localized to the posterior cingulate gyrus (PCG) and Crus II of the cerebellar hemisphere (Crus II). Across the three frequency bands, the brain regions exhibiting significant differences in various parameters were most abundant in the slow-5 frequency band. Conclusion: This study enhances our understanding of the pathological and physiological mechanisms associated with AD continuum. Moreover, it underscores the importance of researchers considering various frequency bands in their investigations of brain function.

In this study, we first time sequenced and analyzed the 16S rRNA gene data of predator ladybird beetles Novius pumilus and globally distributed invasive pest Icerya aegyptiaca at different stages, and combined data with bacterial genome sequences in N. pumilus to explored the taxonomic distribution, alpha and beta diversity, differentially abundant bacteria, co-occurrence network, and putative functions of their microbial community. Our finding revealed that Candidatus Walczuchella, which exhibited a higher abundance in I. aegyptiaca, possessed several genes in essential amino acid biosynthesis and seemed to perform roles in providing nutrients to the host, similar to other obligate symbionts in scale insects. Lactococcus, Serratia, and Pseudomonas, more abundant in N. pumilus, were predicted to have genes related to hydrocarbon, fatty acids, and chitin degradation, which may assist their hosts in digesting the wax shell covering the scale insects. Notably, our result showed that Lactococcus had relatively higher abundances in adults and eggs compared to other stages in N. pumilus, indicating potential vertical transmission. Additionally, we found that Arsenophonus, known to influence sex ratios in whitefly and wasp, may also function in I. aegyptiaca, probably by influencing nutrient metabolism as it similarly had many genes corresponding to vitamin B and essential amino acid biosynthesis. Also, we observed a potential horizontal transfer of Arsenophonus between the scale insect and its predator, with a relatively high abundance in the ladybirds compared to other bacteria from the scale insects.IMPORTANCEThe composition and dynamic changes of microbiome in different developmental stages of ladybird beetles Novius pumilus with its prey Icerya aegyptiaca were detected. We found that Candidatus Walczuchella, abundant in I. aegyptiaca, probably provide nutrients to their host based on their amino acid biosynthesis-related genes. Abundant symbionts in N. pumilus, including Lactococcus, Serratia, and Pseudophonus, may help the host digest the scale insects with their hydrocarbon, fatty acid, and chitin degrading-related genes. A key endosymbiont Arsenophonus may play potential roles in the nutrient metabolisms and sex determination in I. aegyptiaca, and is possibly transferred from the scale insect to the predator.

An innovative and simple nanocomposite denoted as MHNTs@PEI was synthesized for gallic acid (GA) analytical sample pretreatment. Polyethyleneimine (PEI) functionalized was binded onto magnetic halloysite nanotubes (MHNTs) to inhence adsorption capacity. MHNTs@PEI was obtained only through two steps modification (amination and PEI modification). Characterizations showed that there are layers of synthetic PEI on the tubular structure of the material and magnetic spheres on its surface, both indicating successful synthesis of the nanocomposite. Furthermore, the adsorption isotherms and kinetic modeling showed that the Langmuir model and pseudo-first-order model fit the adsorption data, respectively. MHNTs@PEI achieved an adsorption capacity of 158 mg·g-1. Overall, the abundant adsorption sites significantly improved the adsorption performance of the MHNTs@PEI. Regeneration tests demonstrated that the MHNTs@PEI exhibits effective adsorption, even after undergoing five consecutive cycles. Optimization of key parameters (ratio, volume of elution, elution time and frequency) in the process of adsorption and desorption was also conducted. The limit of detection (LOD) and that of the quantification (LOQ) were 0.19 and 0.63 µg·mL-1, respectively, and the recoveries were 95.67-99.43 %. Finally, the excellent magnetism (43.5 emu·g-1) and the adsorption feature of MHNTs@PEI enabled its successful utilization in analytical sample pretreatment through the extraction of GA from green tea.

Ostrinia furnacalis is a disreputable herbivorous pest that poses a serious threat to corn crops. Phototaxis in nocturnal moths plays a crucial role in pest prediction and control. Insect opsins are the main component of insect visual system. However, the inherent molecular relationship between phototactic behaviour and vision of insects remains a mystery. Herein, three opsin genes were identified and cloned from O. furnacalis (OfLW, OfBL, and OfUV). Bioinformatics analysis revealed that all opsin genes had visual pigment (opsin) retinal binding sites and seven transmembrane domains. Opsin genes were distributed across different developmental stages and tissues, with the highest expression in adults and compound eyes. The photoperiod-induced assay elucidated that the expression of three opsin genes in females were higher during daytime, while their expression in males tended to increase at night. Under the sustained darkness, the expression of opsin genes increased circularly, although the increasing amplitude in males was lower when compared with females. Furthermore, the expression of OfLW, OfBL, and OfUV was upregulated under green, blue, and ultraviolet light, respectively. The results of RNA interference showed that the knockout of opsin genes decreased the phototaxis efficiency of female and male moths to green, blue, and ultraviolet light. Our results reveal that opsin genes are involved in the phototactic behaviour of moths, providing a potential target gene for pest control and a basis for further investigation on the phototactic behaviour of Lepidoptera insects.

BACKGROUND: Central nervous system leukemia (CNSL) is one of the major causes of the poor prognosis of childhood leukemia. We aimed to compare the sensitivity of cytomorphology (CM) and flow cytometry (FCM) in diagnosing CNSL, emphasizing the importance of FCM in the diagnosis process. METHODS: One-hundred-sixty-five children with newly diagnosed B-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (B-cell ALL) were included in this study. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples were taken for routine CSF analysis, CM analysis, and FCM examination. Computed tomography scans and/or magnetic resonance imaging were performed at diagnosis. Patients with CNS2, CNS3, and traumatic lumbar puncture (TLP) at diagnosis received two additional courses of triple intrathecal injections during induction treatment. We compared the sensitivity of FCM and CM in the diagnosis of children with CNSL. RESULTS: One hundred and twenty-eight (77.58%) CSF samples were negative by either CM or FCM (CM-/FCM-), four (2.42%) were positive by both CM and FCM (CM+/FCM+), and thirty-three (20%) displayed a single positive finding by FCM (CM-/FCM+) (p = 0.044). By adding two intrathecal injections in the induction treatment, ten children with TLP+ had no CNS relapse, like those with TLP-. However, compared to CNS1 and TLP, the event-free survival (EFS) did not significantly improve in patients with CNS2 and CNS3. Moreover, CNSL status was associated with worse 3-year EFS (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: We have validated that FCM is more accurate in stratifying the status of the CNS compared to CM analysis. However, to improve the EFS rate of childhood leukemia, it is necessary to combine CM examination, FCM, and cranial imaging for the early diagnosis of CNSL.

Purpose: This study aims to comprehensively evaluate the efficacy and safety of programmed cell death protein-1 (PD-1) in patients with advanced, recurrent, or metastatic cervical cancer (ARMCC) and identify the population that may benefit the most. Methods: We conducted a search of PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Collaboration Library from their inception to September 2023. We extracted and analyzed the results related to the efficacy and safety of PD-1 in patients with ARMCC. The primary endpoints included the overall objective response rate (ORR) and adverse events (AEs), while the secondary endpoints encompassed the 1-year overall survival (OS) rate, 1-year progression-free survival (PFS) rate, as well as OS and PFS. We used a random effects model to conduct a meta-analysis on single-group rates, and the Mantel-Haenszel method was utilized to compare the ORR and the incidence of AEs. Results: Our study included a total of 21 trials involving 2,097 patients. The ORR of the combination of PD-1 inhibitors with chemotherapy was 56.36%, the combination of PD-1 inhibitors with anti-angiogenic agents was 38.72%, the combination of PD-1 inhibitors with Cytotoxic T-lymphocyte antigen 4 inhibitors was 25.60%, and PD-1 inhibitor monotherapy was 15.99%. The subgroup analysis showed that the group of patients with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) exhibited a significantly higher ORR compared to the non-SCC group in patients who received PD-1 inhibitors combined with other anti-tumor drugs (Odds Ratio =2.43, P=0.002). Additionally, the group of patients with a programmed death-ligand 1 combined positive score (PD-L1 CPS) ≥1 exhibited a significantly higher ORR compared to the PD-L1 CPS <1 group in patients who received PD-1 inhibitor monotherapy (OR=4.14, P=0.02). PD-1 inhibitor monotherapy or PD-1 inhibitors combined with chemotherapy did not significantly increase the incidence of all grades of adverse events (Relative Risk=0.99, p=0.788) or the incidence of serious adverse events (RR=0.99, p=0.788) compared to chemotherapy alone. Conclusion: PD-1 inhibitors demonstrate outstanding efficacy in the treatment of patients with ARMCC. Patients with SCC may benefit more from treatments including PD-1 inhibitors in combination with other anti-tumor drugs, and PD-L1 CPS ≥1 can be considered a favorable indicator of immune therapy response. Importantly, the use of PD-1 inhibitor monotherapy or PD-1 inhibitors in combination with chemotherapy did not lead to an increased incidence of AEs compared with chemotherapy alone, indicting safety during treatment. Four new flavanone-diarylheptanoid hetero dimers, typhatifolins A-D (1-4), were separated from the pollen of a widely distributed medicinal plant Typha angustifolia. Structures of these rare hybrids were elucidated by detailed interpretation of spectroscopic data, and their absolute configurations were determined on the basis of Mosher's method and ECD analyses. All the four compounds showed moderate to significant cytotoxicities against a panel of tumor cell lines with IC50 values ranging from 0.67 to 12.48 µM. Further in vitro antitumor evaluation for typhatifolin B (TTB, 2) on two breast cancer cells (4T1 and MDA-MB231) revealed that it could remarkably induce cell apoptosis and G0/G1 cycle arrest, as well as block cell migration and invasion. Mechanistically, TTB could exert its antitumor effect via activating the TGF-ß1 (transforming growth factor beta 1) signaling pathway as evidenced by RNA-seq analysis and immunoblotting experiments, which was further corroborated by treating cancer cells with a TGF-ß signaling inhibitor. Lastly, the in vivo anti breast cancer activity was demonstrated by applying the mixture of typhatifolins A-D to a preclinical animal model.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Spread through air space (STAS) is a novel invasive pattern of lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD), and preoperative knowledge of STAS status is helpful in choosing an appropriate surgical approach. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study collected and analyzed 602 patients diagnosed with LUAD from two medical centers: center 1 was randomly partitioned into training (n = 358) and validation cohorts (n = 154) at a 7:3 ratio; and center 2 was the external test cohort (n = 90). Super resolution was performed on all images to acquire high-resolution images, which were used to train the SE-ResNet50 model, before creating an equivalent parameter ResNet50 model. Disparities were compared between the two models using receiver operating characteristic curves, area under the curve, accuracy, precision, sensitivity, and specificity. RESULTS: In this study, 512 and 90 patients with LUAD were enrolled from centers 1 and 2, respectively. The curve values of the SE-ResNet50 and ResNet50 models were compared for training, validation, and test cohorts, resulting in values of 0.933 vs 0.909, 0.783 vs 0.728, and 0.806 vs 0.695, respectively. In the external test cohort, the accuracy of the SE-ResNet50 model demonstrated a 10% improvement over the ResNet50 model (82.2% vs 72.2%). CONCLUSION: The SE-ResNet50 model based on computed tomography super-resolution has great potential for predicting STAS status in patients with solid or partially solid LUAD, with superior predictive performance compared to traditional deep learning models.

A smartphone-assisted, paper-based ratio fluorescence probe is presented for the rapid, low-cost and on-site quantification of total flavonol glycosides in Ginkgo biloba extracts (GBE). The Al3+/Eu-MOF/paper-based probe utilizes lanthanide metal-organic framework (Ln-MOF) nanoparticles immobilized on Whatman filter paper along with Al3+ for detecting flavonols, which are the hydrolyzed products of flavonol glycosides. The color change of the paper-based fluorescence image from red to orange depends on the concentration of the target analyte in the sample solution. The smartphone equipped with a red, green, blue (RGB) color detector measured the fluorescence signal intensity on the paper substrate after adding flavonol. The analytical variables affecting the performance of the probe, including the addition sequence of the aluminum nitrate solution, its concentration, that of the Ln-MOF solution, the drying time of the paper probe, the reaction time and the sensitivity parameters of the mobile phone camera (ISO), were optimized. Under optimal conditions, the Al3+/Eu-MOF/paper-based probe has good linear response in the concentration range 7 ~ 80 µg mL- 1 and a lower detection limit of 2.07 µg mL- 1. The results obtained with the paper-based ratio fluorescence probe and smartphone combination were validated by comparing them with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) measurements. This study provides a potential strategy for fabricating Al3+/Eu-MOF/paper-based probe used for total flavonol glycosides determination.

In this work, a functional group (boronic acid) was modified onto a covalent organic framework (COF) using the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction to obtain a phenylboronic acid-functionalized covalent organic framework (BrCOF-PBA). This product was used as a selective adsorbent and largely as an efficient solid-phase extractant of flavonoids containing cis-diol structures like quercetin (QUE). Five or six-membered cyclic esters generated from the COF were characterized, and some physicochemical studies were performed, resulting in excellent chemical stability and crystallinity, high specific surface area, stable pore structure, and regular pore size. Unique selectivity of BrCOF-PBA was observed toward QUE and exhibited a huge adsorption capacity (213.96 mg g-1) in a relatively short time (90 min). In contrast, the adsorption properties of morin (MOR) and kaempferol (KAE) with a certain degree of chemical similarity to QUE were only 27.62 and 21.76 mg g-1, respectively. BrCOF-PBA also demonstrated good reusability and robustness, making it an attractive composite material for further analytical applicability.
