INTRODUCTION: Few validated aesthetic assessment instruments in breast reconstruction use discrete scales to facilitate studies with multiple evaluators. OBJECTIVE: This research aimed to propose an aesthetic assessment scale for reconstructed breasts. METHODOLOGY: A scale was suggested using discrete variables, with responses ranging from 1 to 10, and the responses for each category could be summed to obtain an average that could be used in studies with multiple evaluators. To test the instrument suggested in this study, 5 experienced plastic surgeons assessed 46 patients. For all the analyses, a rejection level for the null hypothesis of 5% (p < 0.05) was adopted. RESULTS: The suggested scale obtained valid intraclass correlation coefficients, with 0.9 for the overall aesthetic evaluation of the breast and the lowest being 0.77 for defining the inframammary fold. We observed good diagnostic accuracy in all comparisons, with the area under the curve ranging from 0.85 to 0.97. Regarding convergent validity, we observed correlations of 0.77 (p < 0.001) between breast volume and volume symmetry, 0.66 (p < 0.001) between breast shape and contour naturalness. The test-retest reliability was 0.708, which is considered good. CONCLUSION: The results of this study support the effectiveness of the proposed new aesthetic evaluation scale, revealing consistency among different evaluators and over time. Convergent validation strengthens the relationship between the variables of the new scale and those of the Garbay scale. Furthermore, the robust diagnostic accuracy highlights the clinical utility of the new scale in assessing aesthetic outcomes in breast reconstructions.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze whether infants admitted to hospital with Acute Viral Bronchiolitis (AVB), who received glucocorticoids and bronchodilators, and who had an atopic phenotype, spent less time in hospital and/or less time on oxygen therapy when compared to those who did not have the phenotype. METHOD: A cross-sectional, retrospective epidemiological study was developed with data from medical records of infants admitted to hospital due to AVB from 2012 to 2019 in a sentinel public hospital. It was verified that the frequency of prescription of glucocorticoids, bronchodilators and antibiotics. Length of stay and oxygen therapy duration were then compared in the group that used glucocorticoids and bronchodilators between those who had a personal or family history of atopy and those who did not. Subsequently, the length of hospital stay was compared among infants who received antibiotic therapy and those who did not. RESULTS: Fifty-eight infants were included. Of these, 62.1 % received an antibiotic, 100 % a bronchodilator and 98.3 % a glucocorticoid. When comparing infants without a family history of atopy, those who received antibiotics had a longer hospital stay (p = 0.01). CONCLUSION: The presence of an atopic phenotype did not interfere with the length of stay and/or oxygen therapy duration of those who received bronchodilators and glucocorticoids. Increased length of stay of infants without a family history of atopy, who used antibiotics without evidence of bacterial co-infection, and the high frequency of prescription of non-recommended drugs call attention to stricter protocol implementation and professional training in AVB diagnosis and care.

Background: The scope of the study was to analyze original preclinical studies on the antimicrobial effects of carvacrol and derivatives on the Mycobacterium genus. Materials & methods: According to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses statement, four databases (PubMed, Web of Science, SCOPUS and EMBASE) were searched. Results: The search retrieved 392 records, of which 11 papers were selected. Heterogeneity in the techniques and mycobacterial targets was observed. Carvacrol demonstrated synergistic antimycobacterial activity with rifampicin against multidrug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis on membranes and biofilms. In silico approaches showed specific targets in mycobacteria, by inhibition and molecular docking assays, on the enzyme chorismate mutase and the heat shock protein 16.3. Conclusion: Carvacrol has been shown to be a scaffold candidate for future molecules with activity against mycobacteria.

Although studies show that pesticides, especially insecticides, may be toxic to humans, publications on the neurological effects of fungicides are scarce. As fungicides are used widely in Brazil, it is necessary to gather evidence to support actions aimed at safely using of these chemicals. We investigated through a systematic review of publications on the use of fungicides and consequences of exposure related to nervous system diseases or neurological disorders in humans. The protocol review was registered on PROSPERO and followed the guidelines of the PRISMA-Statement. As far as it is known, there is no apparent systematic review in the literature on this topic. The search was comprised of the following databases: PubMed; Web of Science; Scopus and EMBASE, using groups of Mesh terms and strategies specific to each database. Thirteen articles were selected for this review. Regarding the substances analyzed in the studies, some reported the use of fungicides in general, without separating them by type, while others summarized the categories of all pesticides by their function (insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, etc.) or chemical class (dithiocarbamate, dicarboximide, inorganic, etc.). However, most of the articles referred to fungicides that contain the metal manganese (Mn) in their composition. As for neurological disorders, articles addressed Parkinson's disease (PD), neurodevelopmental outcomes, extrapyramidal syndrome resembling PD, cognitive disorders, depression, neural tube defects, motor neurone disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Most investigations pointed to exposure to fungicides, mainly maneb and mancozeb, leading to the development of at least one neurological disease, which suggests the need for further multicentric clinical trials and prospective studies for greater clarity of the research problem.

Aim: To review in vitro, in vivo, and in silico studies examining the antibacterial and immunomodulatory properties of piperine (PPN). Methods: This systematic review followed PRISMA guidelines, and five databases were searched. Results: A total of 40 articles were included in this study. Six aspects of PPN activity were identified, including antibacterial spectrum, association with antibiotics, efflux pump inhibition, biofilm effects, protein target binding, and modulation of immune functions/virulence factors. Most studies focused on Mycobacterium spp. and Staphylococcus aureus. Cell lineages and in vivo models were employed to study PPN antibacterial effects. Conclusion: We highlight PPN as a potential adjuvant in the treatment of bacterial infections. PPN possesses several antibacterial properties that need further exploration to determine the mechanisms behind its pharmacological activity.

Lipoproteins are immunostimulatory bacterial components suggested to participate in inflammation-induced bone loss in periodontal disease through stimulation of osteoclast differentiation. Toll-like receptor 2 activation by Pam2CSK4 (PAM2), known to mimic bacterial lipoproteins, was previously shown to enhance periodontal bone resorption in mice. The anti-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-4 (IL-4) is a known inhibitor of RANKL-induced bone resorption in vitro. Here, we have investigated whether IL-4 could decrease PAM2-induced periodontal bone loss and osteoclastogenesis in vivo. In a model of periodontitis induced by gingival injections of PAM2 in mice, concomitant injections of IL-4 reduced bone loss. Histologically, IL-4 reduced the recruitment of inflammatory cells and the formation of TRAP+ osteoclasts stimulated by PAM2. Mouse bone marrow macrophages (BMMs) and neonatal calvarial osteoblasts were used to assess the effect of IL-4 on PAM2-induced osteoclastogenesis in vitro. In RANKL-primed BMMs stimulated by PAM2 Nfatc1, Ctsk, and Acp5 gene expression was up-regulated and resulted in robust formation of TRAP+ multinucleated osteoclasts, effects which were impaired by IL-4. These effects were mediated by impairment in PAM2-induced c-fos expression. In primary calvarial osteoblast cultures, IL-4 decreased PAM2-induced Tnfsf11 (encoding RANKL) mRNA and enhanced Tnfrsf11b (encoding OPG) expression. Our data demonstrate that the osteoprotective effect by IL-4 on lipoprotein-induced periodontal disease occurs through the inhibition of osteoclastogenesis by three mechanisms, one by acting directly on osteoclast progenitors, another by acting indirectly through decreasing the expression of osteoclast-regulating cytokines in osteoblasts and a third by decreasing inflammation.

Titanium surface modifications are widely used to modulate cellular behavior by recognition of topographical cues. However, how those modifications affect the expression of mediators that will influence neighboring cells is still elusive. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of conditioned media from osteoblasts cultured on laser-modified titanium surfaces on the differentiation of bone marrow cells in a paracrine manner and to analyze the expression of Wnt pathway inhibitors. Mice calvarial osteoblasts were seeded on polished (P) and Yb:YAG laser-irradiated (L) Ti surfaces. Osteoblast culture media were collected and filtered on alternate days to stimulate mice BMCs. Resazurin assay was performed every other day for 20 days to check BMC viability and proliferation. After 7 and 14 days of BMCs maintained with osteoblasts P and L-conditioned media, alkaline phosphatase activity, Alizarin Red staining, and RT-qPCR were performed. ELISA of conditioned media was conducted to investigate the expression of Wnt inhibitors Dickkopf-1 (DKK1) and Sclerostin (SOST). BMCs showed increased mineralized nodule formation and alkaline phosphatase activity. The L-conditioned media enhanced the BMC mRNA expression of bone-related markers Bglap, Alpl, and Sp7. L-conditioned media decreased the expression of DKK1 compared with P-conditioned media. The contact of osteoblasts with Yb:YAG laser-modified Ti surfaces induces the regulation of the expression of mediators that affect the osteoblastic differentiation of neighboring cells. DKK1 is among these regulated mediators.

Despite the options available for breast cancer (BC) therapy, several adverse effects and resistance limit the success of the treatment. Furthermore, the use of a single drug is associated with a high failure rate. We investigated through a systematic review the in vitro effects of the combination between conventional drugs and bioactive compounds derived from cinnamic acid in BC treatment. The information was acquired from the following databases: PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Scopus, Lilacs and Cochrane library. We focused on "Cinnamates", "Drug Combinations" and "Breast neoplasms" for publications dating between January 2012 and December 2022, based on the PRISMA statement. The references of the articles were carefully reviewed. Finally, nine eligible studies were included. The majority of these studies were performed using MCF-7, MDA-MB-231, MDA-MB-468 and BT-20 cell lines and the combination between cisplatin, paclitaxel, doxorubicin, tamoxifen, dactolisib and veliparib, with caffeic acid phenethyl ester, eugenol, 3-caffeoylquinic acid, salvianolic acid A, ferulic acid, caffeic acid, rosmarinic acid and ursolic acid. The combination improved overall conventional drug effects, with increased cytotoxicity, antimigratory effect and reversing resistance. Combining conventional drugs with bioactive compounds derived from cinnamic acid could emerge as a privileged scaffold for establishing new treatment options for different BC types.

OBJECTIVE: To describe an ultrasound-guided lateral pre-iliac (LPI) and parasacral (PS) approach in feline cadavers (phase I) and compare the perioperative analgesic use and complications in cats administered LPI and PS blocks (group PNB) or epidural anesthesia (group EPI) for pelvic limb surgery (phase II). STUDY DESIGN: Experimental uncontrolled, anatomic and retrospective cohort study. ANIMALS: A group of eight feline cadavers and 52 medical records. METHODS: Bilateral LPI and PS approaches with 0.1 mL kg-1 of dye to stain the femoral and obturator nerves and the lumbosacral trunk, respectively, were performed on each cadaver. Nerve staining effect was evaluated upon dissections (phase I). Perioperative analgesics use, and complication rates were retrospectively compared between groups PNB and EPI (phase II). Continuous data were compared using the Mann-Whitney U test and the prevalence of events with Fisher's exact test. Differences were considered significant when p < 0.05. RESULTS: Dissections revealed that the LPI approach stained 94% and 75% of the femoral and obturator nerves, respectively. The PS approach stained 100% of the lumbosacral trunks. Cats enrolled in group PNB (n = 23) were administered lower doses of intraoperative opioids than those in group EPI (n = 25) (p = 0.006). Intraoperative rescue analgesia was required in 60% and 17.4% of cats enrolled in groups EPI and PNB, respectively (p = 0.003). Group PNB required more intraoperative anticholinergics than group EPI (p = 0.02). There were no differences in postoperative pain scores, analgesic use and complication rates. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The ultrasound-guided LPI and PS approach stained the femoral/obturator nerves and the lumbosacral trunk, respectively, in feline cadavers. Furthermore, PNB was associated with lower intraoperative opioid use and similar postoperative pain and analgesic use compared with epidural anesthesia in a cohort of cats undergoing surgery of the pelvic limb.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the impact of intermittent high-intensity exercise training ([IHIE], including high-intensity interval training [HIIT] and recreational team sports [RTS]) on systolic (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) in adults with pre- to established arterial hypertension. DATA SOURCES: MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, Embase, and SPORTDiscus. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing the impact of IHIE on BP versus a non-exercise control. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: Two authors independently conducted all procedures. Mean differences were calculated using random-effects model. The certainty of the evidence was assessed with GRADE. RESULTS: Twenty-seven RCTs (18 HIIT and 9 RTS) were analyzed, with median duration of 12 weeks. Participants' (n = 946) median age was 46 years. Overall, IHIE decreased SBP (-3.29 mmHg; 95% CI: -5.19, -1.39) and DBP (-2.62 mmHg; 95% CI: -3.79, -1.44) compared to the control group. IHIE elicited higher decreases in office SBP and DBP of hypertensive subjects (SBP: -7.13 mmHg, [95% CI: -10.12, -4.15]; DBP: -5.81 mmHg, [95% CI: -7.94, -3.69]) than pre-hypertensive (SBP: -2.14 mmHg, [95% CI: -4.36, -0.08]; DBP: -1.83 mmHg, [95% CI: -2.99, -0.67]). No significant differences were found between HIIT (SBP: -2.12 mmHg, [95% CI: -4.78, -0.54]; DBP: -1.89 mmHg, [95% CI: -3.32, -0.48]) and RTS (SBP: -4.18 mmHg, [95% CI: -7.19, -2.43]; DBP: -4.04 mmHg, [95% CI: -6.00, -2.09]). These findings present low/very low certainty of evidence. No adverse cardiovascular events were reported. CONCLUSIONS: IHIE appears to be safe and to promote substantial decreases in BP, particularly in patients with hypertension. However, the certainty of evidence was low/very low. Pericarditis is a relatively common diagnosis worldwide; however, there are few data published on the frequency, diagnosis, and management of pericardial diseases in pregnant women. Ultrasonography has established its utmost importance and is worldwide recognized in pregnancy and fetal evaluation. Moreover, point-of-care ultrasonography of pregnant women, guided by clinical examination and history, can play an equally fundamental role. We present a case of a 37-year-old pregnant woman who presented at the emergency department with pleuritic chest pain, fever, and cough. Bedside point-of-care ultrasonography confirmed pericarditis revealing an organized pericardial effusion, leading to patient hospitalization and initiation of therapy. The importance and acknowledgment of portable and hand-held ultrasonography devices are growing since it enables physicians not only to make a fast and accurate diagnosis but also to access evolution in inpatient and outpatient settings.

We determined the coadjuvant effect of a recreational futsal (RF) programme versus standard care alone (CON) in men with treated arterial hypertension (TAHT). Thirty-nine men with TAHT were randomised to RF (N = 20; 48 ± 8 years; systolic blood pressure [SBP]: 122 ± 14 mmHg) with 2-3 one-hour sessions/week for 3 months, or to CON (N = 19; 51 ± 6 years; SBP: 126 ± 13 mmHg). Participants were assessed at baseline, at 3 months, and after 1 month of training cessation (4 months). Mean training attendance was 60 ± 23%. At 3-months, there were no between-group differences in BP parameters (SBP: 0.44 mmHg; 95% CI: -5.79, 6.67). However, compared to CON, RF was effective for peak oxygen uptake (2.76 mL.min-1.kg-1; 95% CI: 0.26, 5.26), time to exhaustion (1.15 min; 95% CI: 0.59, 1.69), Yo-Yo IE1 performance (365 m; 95% CI: 175, 556), resting heart rate (RHR; -5 b.min-1; 95% CI: -10, -1), glycated haemoglobin (-0.52 mmol/L; 95% CI: -0.84, -0.19), blood glucose (-0.25 mmol/L; 95% CI: -0.44, -0.06), left femur bone mineral content (1.96 g; 95% CI: 0.29, 3.65), and postural balance (-2.3 falls; 95% CI: -3.9, -0.6). Similar findings were observed after 1-month of training cessation, except for RHR and blood glucose that returned to baseline levels in the RF group. In conclusion, RF provides broad-spectrum fitness and health benefits but no BP effects in men with TAHT.

We aim to evaluate the prevalence of reporting and the extent of statistical heterogeneity of systematic reviews with meta-analyses (SRMAs) of exercise training for hypertension and to provide practical recommendations for dealing with statistical heterogeneity. We systematically searched on four databases (from 2002 to September of 2023) for SRMAs comparing exercise interventions vs. a non-exercise control on blood pressure (BP) control in adults with hypertension. Fifty-nine SRMAs, with a median of 14 studies, were analysed. Cochran's Q (41%), I2 (24%), forest plots (44%), and particularly τ2 (54%) and prediction intervals (96.6%) frequently were not reported for the hypertension subgroup. The recalculated prediction intervals were discrepant (i.e., crossed the null effect) of significant 95% confidence intervals of most meta-analyses (systolic BP: 65%; diastolic BP: 92%). This suggests substantial heterogeneity across studies, which was often not acknowledged by authors' conclusions (78%). Consequently, downgrading the certainty of the available evidence may be justified alone due to heterogeneity across studies. Finally, we illustrate areas for improving I2 interpretation and provide practical recommendations on how to address statistical heterogeneity across all stages of a SRMA.

Aluminum (Al) toxicity limits crops growth and production in acidic soils. Compared to roots, less is known about the toxic effects of Al in leaves. Al subcellular compartmentalization is also largely unknown. Using rye (Secale cereale L.) Beira (more tolerant) and RioDeva (more sensitive to Al) genotypes, we evaluated the patterns of Al accumulation in leaf cell organelles and the photosynthetic and metabolic changes to cope with Al toxicity. The tolerant genotype accumulated less Al in all organelles, except the vacuoles. This suggests that Al compartmentalization plays a role in Al tolerance of Beira genotype. PSII efficiency, stomatal conductance, pigment biosynthesis, and photosynthesis metabolism were less affected in the tolerant genotype. In the Calvin cycle, carboxylation was compromised by Al exposure in the tolerant genotype. Other Calvin cycle-related enzymes, phoshoglycerate kinase (PGK), glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH), triose-phosphate isomerase (TPI), and fructose 1,6-bisphosphatase (FBPase) activities decreased in the sensitive line after 48 h of Al exposure. Consequentially, carbohydrate and organic acid metabolism were affected in a genotype-specific manner, where sugar levels increased only in the tolerant genotype. In conclusion, Al transport to the leaf and compartmentalization in the vacuoles tolerant genotype's leaf cells provide complementary mechanisms of Al tolerance, protecting the photosynthetic apparatus and thereby sustaining growth.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the injectate spread and nerve staining of ultrasound-guided erector spinae plane (ESP) injections at the thoracolumbar spine in canine cadavers. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, randomized, descriptive, anatomic study. ANIMALS: A total of 15 canine cadavers. METHODS: The location of the medial and lateral branches of the dorsal branches of the spinal nerves (DBSN) from the tenth thoracic (T10) to the third lumbar vertebra (L3) were identified by dissection of three cadavers. ESP injections of dye (0.5 mL kg-1) were performed in seven cadavers using as landmarks the T12 transverse process (ESPTp) on one side and the lateral aspect of the T12 mammillary process (ESPMp) on the opposite side. Additionally, five cadavers were injected with dye (0.5 mL kg-1) bilaterally on the lateral aspect of the L2 mammillary process (ESPMp_L2). Nerve staining effect was analyzed after gross anatomic dissections. The number of stained nerves was analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test. RESULTS: Gross anatomic dissections showed that the medial and lateral branches of the DBSN change their path in relation to the epaxial muscles caudal to T11. Approaches ESPTp and ESPMp at T12 stained 2 (0-2) and 3 (2-4) medial (p = 0.01) and 3 (3-4) and 2 (0-2) lateral (p = 0.03) branches, respectively. Injection ESPMp_L2 stained 3 (2-4) medial and 2 (0-3) lateral branches. Injections ESPMp and ESPMp_L2 produced a preferential cranial spread from the injection site. No ventral branches of the spinal nerves were stained with either technique. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: These results suggest that the mammillary process should be used as anatomic landmark to perform ultrasound-guided ESP blocks in the thoracolumbar spine caudal to T11 when targeting the medial branches of the DBSN. Injections should be performed one spinal segment caudal to the level intended to desensitize.

The sixth cranial nerve, also known as the abducens nerve, is responsible for controlling the movements of the lateral rectus muscle. Palsies on the sixth nerve prevent some muscles that control eye movements from proper functioning, causing headaches, migraines, blurred vision, vertigo, and double vision. Hence, such palsy should be diagnosed in the early stages to treat it without leaving any sequela. The usual methods for diagnosing the sixth nerve palsy are invasive or depend on expensive equipment, and computer-based methods designed specifically to diagnose the aforementioned palsy were not found until the publication of this work. Therefore, a low-cost, non-invasive method can support or guide the ophthalmologist's diagnosis. In this context, this work presents a computational methodology to aid in diagnosing the sixth nerve palsy using videos to assist ophthalmologists in the diagnostic process, serving as a second opinion. The proposed method uses convolutional neural networks and image processing techniques to track both eyes' movement trajectory during the video. With this trajectory, it is possible to calculate the average velocity (AV) in which each eye moves. Since it is known that paretic eyes move slower than healthy eyes, comparing the AV of both eyes can determine if the eye is healthy or paretic. The results obtained with the proposed method showed that paretic eyes move at least 19.65% slower than healthy ones. This threshold, along with the AV of the movement of the eyes, can help ophthalmologists in their analysis. The proposed method reached 92.64% accuracy in diagnosing the sixth optic nerve palsy (SONP), with a Kappa index of 0.925, which highlights the reliability of the results and gives favorable perspectives for further clinical application.

OBJECTIVE: To compare sedative, cardiopulmonary, and adverse effects of 3 nalbuphine doses, administered alone or in combination with acepromazine, in dogs. ANIMALS: 6 healthy dogs. PROCEDURES: Dogs were administered nalbuphine (1.0, 1.5, or 2.0 mg/kg, intravenously [IV]) combined with physiologic saline solution (1 mL, IV; treatments SN1.0, SN1.5, and SN2.0, respectively) or acepromazine (0.05 mg/kg, IV; treatments AN1.0, AN1.5, and AN2.0, respectively) in random order, with a 1-week washout interval between treatments. Sedation scores, heart rate, mean arterial pressure, respiratory rate, and rectal temperature were recorded before and 20 minutes after administration of saline solution or acepromazine (T0), and nalbuphine was administered at T0. Measurements were repeated 15, 30, 60, 90, and 120 minutes after nalbuphine administration. RESULTS: Treatments SN and AN resulted in at least 120 minutes of mild sedation and 60 minutes of moderate sedation, respectively. Sedation scores were greater for treatments AN1.0, AN1.5, and AN2.0 at various times, compared with scores for treatments SN1.0, SN1.5, and SN2.0, respectively. Administration of nalbuphine alone resulted in salivation and panting in some dogs. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: All nalbuphine doses promoted mild sedation when administered alone, and moderate sedation when combined with acepromazine. Greater doses of nalbuphine did not increase sedation scores. All treatments resulted in minimal changes in heart rate, respiratory rate, rectal temperature, and mean arterial pressure. Nalbuphine alone resulted in few adverse effects.

Phytolaccaceae is a plant family of the order Caryophyllales, which includes species used in traditional medicine to treat diseases. The purpose of this study was to investigate Phytolaccaceae family plants with potential antimicrobial action, through a systematic review. The study was conducted following the criteria of PRISMA protocol. The search was performed in the electronic databases PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and LILACS, in March 2021. The search strategy used free descriptors and terms, limiting articles to the English language, regardless of publication year. The risk of bias and the quality of publications were based on the CONSORT checklist, modified for in vitro studies and SYRCLE's RoB tool for in vivo study. Five independent judges performed quality assessments of publications and risk of bias analysis. Ninety-five publications were retrieved from the databases and, after screening and eligibility criteria, 22 articles remained, from 1998 to 2019. In the selected studies, the plants were obtained from eight countries. In vivo and in vitro studies of extracts from the Phytolaccaceae family plants, evaluating antibacterial (8 publications), antifungal (8), anti-Trypanosoma (2), anti-Leishmania (2), antiviral (1), and antiamoebic (1) activities, are included. The plant species identified belong to genera Petiveria, Phytolacca, Gallesia, Trichostigma, and Seguieria. The risk of bias in the 22 publications both in vitro and in vitro was suboptimal. The evidence obtained showed that the Phytolaccaceae family, a source of plants with antimicrobial action, can serve as a basis for the creation of new herbal medicines, expanding the possibility of treatment for infectious diseases and stimulating their preservation and biodiversity. However, more high-quality studies are needed to establish the clinical efficacy of the plant.

OBJECTIVE: To translate and perform the cross-cultural adaptation of the Young Spine Questionnaire (YSQ) into Portuguese, and to assess its reliability. METHOD: Translation and cross-cultural adaptations were conducted according to accepted international standards. A preliminary version underwent pilot-testing with 32 children (11-14 years), equally divided by gender and age. Children were asked to rate each question in terms of clarity and comprehensibility, and to provide general feedback regarding the questionnaire. The final version of the questionnaire was approved by a committee consisting of experts from various fields. Test-retest reliability was assessed on 58 children using Cohen's and Fleiss' Kappa. RESULTS: Translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the YSQ only resulted in minor changes and the children rated all questions as "clear and understandable" in the pilot test, without gender or age differences being detected. Test-retest data was collected with a mean interval of 13 days. Reliability scores ranged from 0.56-0.97, equivalent to "moderate" to "almost perfect" agreement. Most questions (84%) had "substantial" or "almost perfect" agreement. CONCLUSION: The translation and cross-cultural adaptation of YSQ into Portuguese was successfully performed. This questionnaire was also shown to be reliable, supporting its future use in research projects.

PURPOSE: To report the results of horizontal rectus muscle recession-plication with vertical displacement in the treatment of combined vertical and horizontal strabismus. METHODS: From October 2016 to December 2019, 15 patients with horizontal deviation of 15Δ-60Δ, 3 associated with vertical deviation of 8Δ and 12 with vertical deviation of 10Δ-20Δ, underwent horizontal strabismus surgery (recession-plication) in addition to vertical displacement of both horizontal rectus, half or total muscle width, depending on whether the amount of vertical strabismus was small (8Δ) or large (10Δ-20Δ), respectively. RESULTS: A total of 15 patients (8 females) were included; average age at surgery was 27 years. All cases showed improvement in alignment of the eyes, with a single case showing a small residual vertical deviation (4Δ).There were no intra- or postoperative complications. CONCLUSIONS: This case series demonstrates the feasibility of this vessel-sparing recession-plication technique in the treatment of combined horizontal and vertical deviations, without the need to operate on vertical muscles.
