RESUMEN

[Purpose] To determine the optimal Tuina rolling manipulation parameters for improving peripheral blood circulation and to observe the duration of these effects. [Participants and Methods] A total of 162 healthy males and 20 males with coronary heart disease were recruited, with a mean age of 29.5 ± 6.4 years. The change in blood flow was used as the observation index, and the best combination of parameters was selected using a cyclic orthogonal experiment. We observed changes in rolling manipulation across different time periods and groups. [Results] There were significant interactions between pressure, frequency and duration in the rolling manipulation. The combination mode of 4 kg, 120 repetitions/min and 10 min is the most effective to improve the average blood flow increase rate of popliteal artery. At 15 minutes after manipulation, different degrees of significant increase were observed, but 20 minutes after manipulation, the average blood flow rate returned to the premanipulation level. There was no difference in blood flow rate between healthy males and coronary heart disease patients. [Conclusion] An effective dynamic model of rolling manipulation was constructed. These results contradicted the idea that more pressure and longer continuous manipulation led to stronger effects. The effect of rolling manipulation on improving peripheral circulation can be maintained for 20 minutes.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effects of a Chinese compound herbal medicine for reinforcing qi, activating blood circulation, expelling phlegm and dredging collaterals in treatment of lower limb arteriosclerosis. METHODS: The outpatients and inpatients with lower limb arteriosclerosis from Shanghai Yueyang Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine were randomly divided into control group and treatment group after color Doppler ultrasound inspection, and there were 30 cases in each group. The patients in the treatment group were treated with simvastatin and a Chinese compound herbal medicine for reinforcing qi, activating blood circulation, expelling phlegm and dredging collaterals, and the patients in the control group were treated only with simvastatin. The color Doppler ultrasound imaging of lower limb arteries including inside diameter, intima-media thickness, and plaque area in all the patients were examined after 6-month treatment. The levels of serum total cholesterol (TC) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) were detected too. RESULTS: After the treatment, the lower limb artery intima-media thickness and artery plaque area in the treatment group decreased obviously as compared with those in the control group (P < 0.05). Color Doppler flow imaging showed that the percentage of patients with uniphase wave decreased from 26.67% (8/30) to 6.67% (2/30) in the treatment group (P < 0.05), and from 26.67% (8/30) to 16.67% (5/30) in the control group (P < 0.05) as compared with those before the treatment, and there was also a significant difference between the two groups (P < 0.05). The concentrations of serum TC and LDL in the treatment group were lower than those in the control group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Color Doppler ultrasound showed that the Chinese compound medicine for reinforcing qi, activating blood circulation, expelling phlegm and dredging collaterals has positive effects on lower limb arteriosclerosis.

RESUMEN

PC-SPES is an eight herbal mixture that was shown to have activity against prostate cancer. Recently, we purified oridonin from Rabdosia rubescens, one component of PC-SPES, by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The ability of oridonin to inhibit the proliferation of cancer cells was examined by MTT assay. Oridonin effectively inhibited the proliferation of a wide variety of cancer cells including those from prostate (LNCaP, DU145, PC3), breast (MCF-7, MDA-MB231), non-small cell lung (NSCL) (NCI-H520, NCI-H460, NCI-H1299) cancers, acute promyelocytic leukemia (NB4), and glioblastoma multiforme (U118, U138) with ED50s ranging from 1.8 to 7.5 micro g/ml. TUNEL assay and cell cycle analysis showed that oridonin induced apoptosis and G0/G1 cell cycle arrest in LNCaP prostate cancer cells. In addition, expression of p21waf1 was induced in LNCaP and NCI-H520 cells in a p53-dependent manner. Interestingly, when p53 was suppressed by over-expression of E6 from human papilloma virus type 16 (HPV-16), these cells lost their sensitivity to oridonin-induced growth inhibition and apoptosis. Taken together, oridonin inhibited the proliferation of cancer cells via apoptosis and cell cycle arrest with p53 playing a central role in several cancer types which express the wild-type p53 gene. Oridonin may be a novel, adjunctive therapy for a large variety of malignancies and probably represents one of the major, active components of PC-SPES.
