Cost-effective CO2 adsorbents are gaining increasing attention as viable solutions for mitigating climate change. In this study, composites were synthesized by electrochemically combining the post-gasification residue of Macadamia nut shell with copper benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate (CuBTC). Among the different composites synthesized, the ratio of 1:1 between biochar and CuBTC (B 1:1) demonstrated the highest CO2 adsorption capacity. Under controlled laboratory conditions (0°C, 1 bar, without the influence of ambient moisture or CO2 diffusion limitations), B 1:1 achieved a CO2 adsorption capacity of 9.8 mmol/g, while under industrial-like conditions (25°C, 1 bar, taking into account the impact of ambient moisture and CO2 diffusion limitations within a bed of adsorbent), it reached 6.2 mmol/g. These values surpassed those reported for various advanced CO2 adsorbents investigated in previous studies. The superior performance of the B 1:1 composite can be attributed to the optimization of the number of active sites, porosity, and the preservation of the full physical and chemical surface properties of both parent materials. Furthermore, the composite exhibited a notable CO2/N2 selectivity and improved stability under moisture conditions. These favorable characteristics make B 1:1 a promising candidate for industrial applications.

Green silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized using natural extracts as reducing agents and were firstly applied as co-catalysts in low-intensity-visible-light driven photocatalytic hydrogen production (PH2P), which a solution for green energy sources and independence from fossil fuels. The as-prepared AgNPs possessed size in a few tens nanometers and exhibited surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effects in the 310-560 nm region. Depositing AgNPs on g-C3N4 nanosheets broadened the visible absorption range, reduced electron-hole recombination, and increased electronic communication at the interface. g-C3N4/Ag demonstrated high PH2P efficiency, stability over three consecutive cycles, and a rapidly rising photocurrent under low-intensity visible light irradiation, although these features were not observed in g-C3N4 alone. The H2 evolution of g-C3N4/Ag_CC (CC: Cinnamomum camphora), g-C3N4/Ag_GT (GT: green tea), and g-C3N4/Ag_PP (PP: pomelo peels) reached 252.6, 125.3 and 92.0 µmol g-1 at 180 min at the first cycle, respectively. Among them, g-C3N4/Ag_CC showed the highest photocatalytic activity, which may be attributed to the superior morphology, optical properties of AgNPs_CC, and efficient electron transfer from g-C3N4 to AgNPs_CC. The SPR effect and Schottky barriers formed at the interface could contribute to enhancing the overall efficiency of the heterojunction photocatalysts. The results highlighted a crucial advancement toward H2 production under low-intensity visible-light irradiation.

Background: Stroke presents a significant global health challenge. Despite its potential for cardiovascular protection, the role of vitamin C (VTMC) in stroke risk remains contentious. Aim: This study aimed to assess VTMC deficiency in stroke patients and its association with stroke risk. Methods: We analyzed data from 13,339 adults aged 20 and above in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 2003 and 2018, excluding those with missing serum VTMC and stroke status. We assessed the VTMC deficiency (<11.4 µmol/L) and stroke incidence association using multivariate weighted logistic regression, adjusting for demographics, BMI, medical history, smoking, and dietary VTMC intake. Results: Stroke rates in the NHANES cycles 2003-2006 and 2017-2018 were 2.8% (95% CI [2.3-3.4]) and 3.3% (95% CI [2.7-4.2]), respectively. VTMC deficiency was more common in individuals with a history of stroke, with rates of 3.6% (95% CI [2.2-5.8]) and 5.3% (95% CI [3-9.1]) compared to 2.7% (95% CI [2.3-3.3]) and 3.2% (95% CI [2.5-4.1]) in the nonstroke population. Nevertheless, VTMC deficiency was distinctly prevalent across diverse demographic and health-related subgroups. Multivariate analyses invalidated any statistically significant association between VTMC deficiency and stroke risk across all employed analytical models within both time intervals. Conclusions: Our study does not support a link between VTMC deficiency and increased stroke risk in U.S. adults. Substantial uncertainties persist regarding the use of VTMC for stroke-related oxidative stress, dosage, and delivery methods, requiring further clinical trials. Healthcare providers should carefully consider its prevalence in specific subgroups.

Chylothorax after esophageal surgery is a rare complication but can lead to death in patients due to malnutrition, fluid imbalance, and immunodeficiency. Multiple treatment options exist for postoperative chylothorax, including conservative treatment, octreotide therapy, and interventions such as thoracic duct embolization and surgical ligation of the thoracic duct. We present a case of lymphatic leakage following laparoscopic esophagectomy for esophageal cancer, confirmed by lymphangiography. The patient underwent an intervention to embolize the thoracic duct under computed tomography after an initial failure under digital subtraction angiography (DSA). One week after the intervention, the patient's pleural fluid output gradually decreased, and the patient was discharged from the hospital. At a 7-month follow-up, the patient remained stable with no recurrence of lymphatic leakage.

In a new approach, a series of 3-aroylimidazo[1,2-a]pyridine derivatives were prepared in high yields. This approach revealed the direct Fe-catalyzed functionalization of imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine derivatives with aryl aldehydes via an aerobic oxidative cross-dehydrogenative coupling process. This transformation occurred in the presence of air, and FeBr3 served as a homogeneous Lewis catalyst. O2 was found to be the principal oxidant responsible for the method's success. Interestingly, when these reactions were carried out under an argon atmosphere, 3,3'-(arylmethylene)bis(2-phenylimidazo[1,2-a]pyridines) derivatives were prepared in good yields.

Isolated colon injuries following blunt abdominal trauma have been reported at a rate of 0.1%-0.5%, with isolated sigmoid colon injuries involved in only 34.8% of single colon injuries. Surgical treatment options include recto-colonic anastomosis, resection with or without recto-colonic anastomosis, and colostomy. We report the case of a 39-year-old male patient diagnosed with isolated sigmoid colon rupture after a traffic accident, identified using contrast-enhanced abdominal computed tomography. The patient underwent emergency surgery, during which the Hartmann procedure was performed. This included excision of the sigmoid colon at both ends of the hiatus, creation of a proximal colostomy, closure of the distal end, and repair of the sigmoid disruption segment. Seven days after surgery, the patient's clinical symptoms were stable, and he was discharged.

Previous studies have reported the functional role, biochemical features and synthesis pathway of podophyllotoxin (PTOX) in plants. In this study, we employed combined morphological and molecular techniques to identify an endophytic fungus and extract PTOX derivatives. Based on the analysis of ITS sequences and the phylogenetic tree, the isolate was classified as Penicillium herquei HGN12.1C, with a sequence identity of 98.58%. Morphologically, the HGN12.1C strain exhibits white colonies, short-branched mycelia and densely packed hyphae. Using PacBio sequencing at an average read depth of 195×, we obtained a high-quality genome for the HGN12.1C strain, which is 34.9 Mb in size, containing eight chromosomes, one mitochondrial genome and a GC content of 46.5%. Genome analysis revealed 10 genes potentially involved in PTOX biosynthesis. These genes include VdtD, Pinoresinollariciresinol reductase (PLR), Secoisolariciresinol dehydrogenase (SDH), CYP719A23, CYP71BE54, O-methyltransferase 1 (OMT1), O-methyltransferase 3 (OMT3), 2-ODD, CYP71CU and CYP82D61. Notably, the VdtD gene in fungi shares functional similarities with the DIR gene found in plants. Additionally, we identified peltatin, a PTOX derivative, in the HGN12.1C extract. Docking analysis suggests a potential role for the 2-ODD enzyme in converting yatein to deoxypodophyllotoxin. These findings offer invaluable insights into the synthesis mechanism of PTOX in fungi, shedding light on the relationship between host plants and endophytes.

School management is responsible and accountable for implementing educational policies into practice effectively and efficiently to provide quality education. Simultaneously, school management can grasp the core features of the whole school process and identify the relationship among three variables: quality management practices, school culture, and student performance. The current study aims to explore the school principals' perception about quality management practices and its relationship with school culture and student performance in the public secondary schools of Punjab province, Pakistan. In order to achieve the objectives of the study, the study adopted an exploratory sequential mix-methods research design. The researcher conducted a systematic literature review of sixty-three previous studies and interviews with eleven school principals for the qualitative data. Based on results obtained from the qualitative phase, a questionnaire was prepared and dispatched to 150 school principals to get quantitative data. Successively 120 valid responses were received. SEM analysis was performed to get quantitative results. The study's preliminary conclusion demonstrated a positive connection between quality management and student performance in public secondary schools, and quality management was also a significant predictor of school culture. Further, school culture served as a complete mediator between quality management and student performance.

PURPOSES: The objective of this research was to interpret and analyze the imaging, audiological features and cochlear implantation outcomes in cochlear nerve deficiency children. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective analysis. RESULTS: 25 prelingual hearing loss children diagnosed cochlear nerve deficiency (CND), the age range from 1 to 15 (mean age, 5.04), underwent cochlear implantation at Ear Nose and Throat Hospital - Ho Chi Minh City (ENT hospital - HCMC) from 2016 to 2023. All children had sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) from severe to profound degree. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed cochlear nerve hypoplasia in 76 % and cochlear nerve aplasia in 24 % of cases. Inner ear malformations were found in 52 % of cases. The mean Categories of Auditory Performance (CAP) score at 1 year after surgery was 4.8. At 6 months and 1 year after surgery, the mean CAP score of the aplasia group was significantly lower than that of the hypoplasia group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: In cochlear nerve deficiency children, auditory perception and speech performance still improved after cochlear implantation. However, this progress was significantly limited in cochlear nerve aplasia group.

The toxicity of the contaminated powder contributed to toxic aflatoxins has been well-known in the literature. However, before this study, the specific fungal strain behind aflatoxin production remained unidentified. Our research aimed to isolate and identify fungi from the tainted sandwiches while also assessing the preservation of sandwiches in ambient conditions. The study pinpointed Aspergillus flavus as the fungus responsible for aflatoxin production. Analysis revealed that the sandwich samples contaminated with pure A. flavus exhibited a significant Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) concentration of 55.2 ± 0.21 ng/g, accompanied by a spore count of 2 × 106 Colony-Forming Unit (CFU)/g after ten days. In contrast, sandwich samples contaminated with the unspecified fungi displayed a lower AFB1 content of 16.21 ± 0.42 ng/g, with a spore count of 2.2 × 102 CFU/g after the same duration. In the prevention study, the efficacy of the ethanol spray method for inhibiting aflatoxin from A. flavus was investigated. Results demonstrated that a 70 % ethanol concentration at a ratio of 2.0 % total weight of the sandwich proved highly effective, significantly impeding fungal growth. This method extended the preservation time by sevenfold compared to the control. Importantly, tests at 2.0 % ethanol of the sandwich weight did not detect aflatoxin presence.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to design a pan-cancer gene panel for childhood malignancies and validate it using clinically characterized patient samples. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: In addition to 5,275 coding exons, SJPedPanel also covers 297 introns for fusions/structural variations and 7,590 polymorphic sites for copy-number alterations. Capture uniformity and limit of detection are determined by targeted sequencing of cell lines using dilution experiment. We validate its coverage by in silico analysis of an established real-time clinical genomics (RTCG) cohort of 253 patients. We further validate its performance by targeted resequencing of 113 patient samples from the RTCG cohort. We demonstrate its power in analyzing low tumor burden specimens using morphologic remission and monitoring samples. RESULTS: Among the 485 pathogenic variants reported in RTCG cohort, SJPedPanel covered 86% of variants, including 82% of 90 rearrangements responsible for fusion oncoproteins. In our targeted resequencing cohort, 91% of 389 pathogenic variants are detected. The gene panel enabled us to detect ∼95% of variants at allele fraction (AF) 0.5%, whereas the detection rate is ∼80% at AF 0.2%. The panel detected low-frequency driver alterations from morphologic leukemia remission samples and relapse-enriched alterations from monitoring samples, demonstrating its power for cancer monitoring and early detection. CONCLUSIONS: SJPedPanel enables the cost-effective detection of clinically relevant genetic alterations including rearrangements responsible for subtype-defining fusions by targeted sequencing of ∼0.15% of human genome for childhood malignancies. It will enhance the analysis of specimens with low tumor burdens for cancer monitoring and early detection.

BACKGROUND: Metastases to the bone of aortic sarcoma include osteolytic and nonosteolytic lesions. This study aims to review the clinical symptoms, the sites, and diagnostic methods of bone metastases and to compare the osteolytic and nonosteolytic metastases of patients with aortic sarcoma. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed and scientific journals published from 1972 to 2022. Database included reports of aortic sarcomas with bone metastasis published in English and in French. Characteristics of patients were analyzed with chi-square test or Fisher's exact test between lytic and sclerotic bone metastases. RESULTS: In 29 patients with bone destruction, the symptoms of low back pain and claudication were observed in 10 (34.5%) and 9 cases (31%), respectively. Acute ischemia of the legs and arms accounted for 7 cases (24.1%). There were 4 cases with hypertension (13.8%) and 5 cases with chest pain or abdominal pain or epigastric pain (17.2%). Metastases to the vertebrae, pelvis, and femur were observed in 14 (48.3%), 12 (41.4%), and 11 cases (37.9%), respectively. Osteolytic lesions were detected at the time of diagnosis in 16/29 (55.2%) cases. In 27 aortic sarcoma patients with sclerotic bone metastases, symptoms of hypertension were observed in 10 (37.0%), of back pain in 7 (25.9%), of chest pain or abdominal pain in 5 cases (18.5%). Acute ischemia of the leg occurred in 6 cases (22.2%). Metastases to the vertebrae, bone, pelvis, and femur were observed in 10 (37.0%), 9 (33.3%), 7 (25.9%), and 6 cases (22.2%), respectively. The sign of claudication and methods for detected bone destruction by X-rays were the difference between osteolytic and nonosteolytic metastases of aortic sarcoma (P = 0.019; P = 0.001), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Back pain is a common symptom of aortic sarcoma with bone metastasis. The sign of intermittent claudication is the difference between osteolytic and nonosteolytic metastases of aortic sarcoma. Bone destruction occurred in all bones, but mainly in vertebrae, pelvis, and femur. Methods for detection of bone destruction are mainly by X-rays or computed tomography (CT). Bone destruction was an important sign to detect aortic sarcoma. Sclerotic bone metastases occurred mainly in vertebrae, pelvis, bone, and femur. The detection of sclerotic bone metastases is based on magnetic resonance imaging, positron emission tomography/CT, and autopsy.

Water-soluble polymers with the ability to complex metal ions through complexing ligands have attracted significant interest in diverse domains, such as optical or catalyst applications. In this paper, we successfully synthesized, through a one-pot process combining polymerization-induced self-assembly and reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization, aqueous dispersions of terpyridine-decorated poly[poly(ethylene glycol)methyl ether methacrylate]-b-poly(methyl methacrylate) (tpy-PPEGMA-b-PMMA) amphiphilic block copolymers. The in-situ formation of well-defined amphiphilic block copolymers and their self-assembly led to nanosphere latex with the hydrodynamic diameters increasing from 17 to 52 nm and the length of the copolymers increasing from 21,000 to 51,000 g·mol-1. These aqueous dispersed tpy-PPEGMA-b-PMMA nanospheres effectively complex metal ions, such as Cu2+, in a stoichiometric ratio of 2:1. Subsequently, these metal-complexed nanospheres were employed as soft template nanocarriers to control, on the nanometer scale, the dispersion of metal on a nanostructured support. This is exemplified by the synthesis of copper supported on cerium oxide hollow spheres (Cu-CeO2) using Cu2+-tpy-PPEGMA-b-PMMA as template nanocarriers and CeO2 nanoparticles. This novel assembly engineering strategy for the preparation of atomically dispersed metal on a nanostructured support was highlighted through the utilization of Cu-CeO2 hollow spheres as an electrocatalyst for the nitrate reduction reaction (NO3RR) to NH3. These encouraging outcomes emphasize the potential of metal-metal oxide-nanostructured materials to treat contaminated water sources with nitrate while allowing the green production of ammonia.

Gastrointestinal bleeding due to hemobilia is a rare condition but can be very serious, even life-threatening. The main causes of biliary bleeding are invasive procedures in treatment, trauma, or malignant diseases. Chronic obstruction of the biliary tract can cause inflammation, erosion, and leakage of adjacent vascular structures and lead to pseudoaneurysm or hemorrhage, but this is very rare. In this article, we present a clinical case of upper gastrointestinal bleeding due to a pseudoaneurysm of the hepatic artery believed to have formed due to chronic cholangitis. An 81-year-old female patient with a medical history of chronic cholangitis was admitted to the hospital with recurrent inflammation accompanied by progressive upper gastrointestinal bleeding, potentially life-threatening. Ultrasound images and blood tests confirmed that the patient had anemia and cholangitis caused by stones. Gastrointestinal endoscopy showed bleeding suspected to be from the biliary tract. Hepatobiliary computed tomography confirmed that the common hepatic artery pseudoaneurysm located at the upper end of the common bile duct had active bleeding.

Background: The association between postoperative complications and long-term survival after laparoscopic gastrectomy (LG) for gastric cancer (GC) remains uncertain. This study aimed to determine the incidence and risk factors of postoperative complications and evaluate their impact on survival outcomes in patients undergoing LG. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on 621 patients who underwent LG for gastric adenocarcinoma between March 2015 and December 2021. Postoperative complications were classified according to the Clavien-Dindo classification, with major complications defined as Grade III or higher. Logistic regression models with stepwise backward procedure were used to identify risk factors for complications. To assess the impact of postoperative complications on survival, uni- and multi-variable Cox proportional hazard models were used for overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS). Results: Overall rate of postoperative complications was 17.6% (109 patients); 33 patients (5.3%) had major complications. Independent risk factors for major complications were Charlson comorbidities index (OR [95% CI], 1.87 [1.09-3.12], p-value = 0.018 for each one score increase), and type of anastomosis (OR [95% CI], 0.28 [0.09-0.91], p-value = 0.029 when comparing Billroth II with Billroth I). Multivariable analysis identified major complications as an independent prognostic factor to reduce OS (HR [95% CI], 2.32 [1.02-5.30], p-value = 0.045) and DFS (HR [95% CI], 2.63 [1.37-5.06], p-value = 0.004). Other prognostic factors for decreased survival outcomes were tumor size, presence of invasive lymph nodes, and T4a stage. Conclusions: Major complications rate of LG for GC was approximately 5.3%. Charlson comorbidities index and type of anastomosis were identified as risk factors for major postoperative complications. Major complications were demonstrated to pose adverse impact on survival outcomes.

The boundary between myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML) has been revised in the latest World Health Organization classification of myeloid malignancies. These changes were motivated by the description of a subgroup of MDS patients identified as oligomonocytic chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (OM-CMML) at risk of evolving into overt CMML. Various studies will be reviewed describing the clinical and biological features of MDS patients evolving to CMML. The efforts to discover biomarkers enabling the identification of these patients at the time of MDS diagnosis will be discussed. Finally, the molecular landscape of these patients will be presented with a specific focus on the biallelic inactivation of TET2 in light of its functional impact on hematopoietic stem cells, granule-monocytic differentiation, and its tight interplay with inflammation.

Intra-tumor heterogeneity is an important driver of tumor evolution and therapy response. Advances in precision cancer treatment will require understanding of mutation clonality and subclonal architecture. Currently the slow computational speed of subclonal reconstruction hinders large cohort studies. To overcome this bottleneck, we developed Clonal structure identification through Pairwise Penalization, or CliPP, which clusters subclonal mutations using a regularized likelihood model. CliPP reliably processed whole-genome and whole-exome sequencing data from over 12,000 tumor samples within 24 hours, thus enabling large-scale downstream association analyses between subclonal structures and clinical outcomes. Through a pan-cancer investigation of 7,827 tumors from 32 cancer types, we found that high subclonal mutational load (sML), a measure of latency time in tumor evolution, was significantly associated with better patient outcomes in 16 cancer types with low to moderate tumor mutation burden (TMB). In a cohort of prostate cancer patients participating in an immunotherapy clinical trial, high sML was indicative of favorable response to immune checkpoint blockade. This comprehensive study using CliPP underscores sML as a key feature of cancer. sML may be essential for linking mutation dynamics with immunotherapy response in the large population of non-high TMB cancers.

Evidence of implementation of laparoscopic total gastrectomy (LTG) for surgical T4a stage (sT4a) gastric cancer (GC) remains inadequate. This study aimed to compare short- and long-term outcomes of LTG versus open total gastrectomy (OTG) for sT4a GC. This retrospective cohort study was conducted using data from patients with sT4a GC underwent total gastrectomy from 2014 to 2020. Short-term outcomes included operative characteristics and postoperative complications. Long-term oncological outcomes focused on 3-, and 5-year overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS). Propensity score matching (PSM) was applied to reduce potential biases in baseline characteristics between groups. There was a total of 161 patients, in which 96 underwent LTG and 65 underwent OTG. After PSM, both groups consisted of 51 patients each, with balanced baseline characteristics. There were no significant differences between the two groups regarding blood loss, length of proximal resected margin, postoperative hospital stays, and overall and major postoperative complications. Most of the complications were classified as minor according to the Clavien-Dindo classification. Operating time was significantly longer in the LTG group (mean: 257 min vs. 231 min, p = 0.006). LTG was superior to OTG groups in time to flatus (mean: 3.0 days vs 3.9 days, p < 0.001). Five-year OS and DFS rates were similar between the two groups (44% and 33% vs. 43% and 28% in the LTG and OTG groups, respectively). Our findings indicate that LTG is a feasible and safe technique, exhibiting comparable long-term oncological outcomes to OTG for sT4a GC. LTG may be an acceptable alternative to OTG for the treatment of sT4a GC.

We are reporting a short and convenient pathway for the synthesis of novel ß-carboline-bisindole hybrid compounds from relatively cheap and commercially available chemicals such as tryptamine, dialdehydes and indoles. These newly designed compounds can also be prepared in high yields with the tolerance of many functional groups under mild conditions. Notably, these ß-carboline-bisindole hybrid compounds exhibited some promising applications as anticancer agents against the three common cancer cell lines MCF-7 (breast cancer), SK-LU-1 (lung cancer), and HepG2 (liver cancer). The two best compounds 5 b and 5 g inhibited the aforementioned cell lines with the same IC50 range of the reference Ellipticine at less than 2 µM. A molecular docking study to gain more information about the interactions between the synthesized molecules and the kinase domain of the EGFR was performed. Therefore, this finding can have significant impacts on the development of future research in medicinal chemistry and drug discovery.

The development of nanocomposite photocatalysts with high photocatalytic activity, cost-effectiveness, a simple preparation process, and scalability for practical applications is of great interest. In this study, nanocomposites of TiO2 Degussa P25 nanoparticles/activated carbon (TiO2/AC) were prepared at various mass ratios of (4:1), (3:2), (2:3), and (1:4) by a facile process involving manual mechanical pounding, ultrasonic-assisted mixing in an ethanol solution, paper filtration, and mild thermal annealing. The characterization methods included XRD, SEM-EDS, Raman, FTIR, XPS, and UV-Vis spectroscopies. The effects of TiO2/AC mass ratios on the structural, morphological, and photocatalytic properties were systematically studied in comparison with bare TiO2 and bare AC. TiO2 nanoparticles exhibited dominant anatase and minor rutile phases and a crystallite size of approximately 21 nm, while AC had XRD peaks of graphite and carbon and a crystallite size of 49 nm. The composites exhibited tight decoration of TiO2 nanoparticles on micron-/submicron AC particles, and uniform TiO2/AC composites were obtained, as evidenced by the uniform distribution of Ti, O, and C in an EDS mapping. Moreover, Raman spectra show the typical vibration modes of anatase TiO2 (e.g., E1g(1), B1g(1), Eg(3)) and carbon materials with D and G bands. The TiO2/AC with (4:1), (3:2), and (2:3) possessed higher reaction rate constants (k) in photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) than that of either TiO2 or AC. Among the investigated materials, TiO2/AC = 4:1 achieved the highest photocatalytic activity with a high k of 55.2 × 10-3 min-1 and an MB removal efficiency of 96.6% after 30 min of treatment under UV-Vis irradiation (120 mW/cm2). The enhanced photocatalytic activity for TiO2/AC is due to the synergistic effect of the high adsorption capability of AC and the high photocatalytic activity of TiO2. Furthermore, TiO2/AC promotes the separation of photoexcited electron/hole (e-/h+) pairs to reduce their recombination rate and thus enhance photocatalytic activity. The optimal TiO2/AC composite with a mass ratio of 4/1 is suggested for treating industrial or household wastewater with organic pollutants.
