RESUMEN

The gills and skin microbiota and microbiome of wild fish remain far more under-investigated compared to that of farmed fish species, despite that these animal-microbe interactions hold the same ecophysiological roles in both cases. In this study, the gills and skin bacterial microbiota profiles and their presumptive bacterial metabolisms were investigated in five open-sea fishes: bullet tuna (Auxis sp.), common dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus), Atlantic little tunny (Euthynnus alletteratus), Atlantic bonito (Sarda sarda) and Atlantic white marlin (Kajikia albida). Gills and skin tissues were collected from two to three individuals per species, from specimens caught by recreational trolling during summer of 2019, and their bacterial 16S rRNA gene diversity was analysed by high-throughput sequencing. The gills bacterial communities among the five species were clearly different but not the skin bacterial microbiota. The dominant operational taxonomic units belonged to the Moraxellaceae, Pseudomonadaceae, Rhodobacteraceae, Staphylococcaceae and Vibrionaceae families. Despite the differences in taxonomic composition, the presumptive bacterial metabolisms between the gills and skin of the five fishes investigated here were ≥ 94% similar and were dominated by basic metabolism, most likely reflecting the continuous exposure of these tissues in the surrounding seawater.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to detect the critical view of safety during elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy. METHODS: This was a prospective, observational study evaluating the detection of the critical view of safety with an AI software in a consecutive series of elective laparoscopic cholecystectomies compared with the blinded evaluation of 3 surgeons. The program was created using the digital tools PyCharm (JetBrains), Google Colab Pro (https://colab.google/), and YOLOv8 (Ultralytics). RESULTS: A total of 40 consecutive elective laparoscopic cholecystectomies were included in the study. The program was able to detect the critical view of safety in all cases following the experts' blinded opinion. CONCLUSION: In this preliminary experience, an AI software was able to detect the critical view of safety in elective laparoscopic cholecystectomies. Its application during nonelective cases, in which the critical view of safety is harder to achieve, might warrant further studies.

RESUMEN

Bioaccumulation patterns of heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Cr, Ni, Fe and Cu) and organic (priority and emerging) pollutants, in combination with stable isotope analysis (SIA), were assessed in muscle and liver of three tuna species from the Gulf of Cadiz (Atlantic bluefin tuna, Thunnus thynnus; Atlantic bonito, Sarda sarda, and skipjack tuna, Katsuwonus pelamis). SIA and contaminant (heavy metal and organic) profiles separately discriminated between species. There was no significant overlap between the trophic niches estimated from isotopic data, suggesting that there are diet differences which may determine differential bioaccumulation patterns. The levels of heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants in muscle of all the individuals analyzed were below the allowable limits established by the current legislation. Concentrations of most contaminants were higher in liver than in muscle, underlining the powerful detoxifying capacity of the liver in tunas. In addition to diet, other factors such as size and age (exposure time to environmental chemicals) explain differences in pollutant accumulation patterns in tissues between species, each with varying degrees of involvement depending on the pollutant class. Our results show that combining contaminant profile data with trophic features based on SIA may help understand pollutant bioaccumulation patterns in upper levels of marine food webs.

RESUMEN

Purpose: To describe the surgical outcomes of rhegmatogenous retinal detachments (RRDs) associated with giant retinal tears (GRTs) and define factors associated with primary anatomic failure. Methods: This retrospective consecutive study comprised primary GRT-RRD surgeries between 1999 and 2021 at a single institution. Exclusion criteria were a follow-up of less than 3 months and incomplete surgical data. Results: The series included 69 eyes (64 patients). Single-surgery anatomic success (SSAS) was achieved in 75% and final anatomic success (FAS) in 90%. The mean logMAR visual acuity improved from 1.5 ± 1.1 to 0.6 ± 0.9. Preoperative factors significantly associated with redetachment were proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) (odds ratio [OR], 6.2; P < .01), hypotony (OR, 13.6; P < .01), and a 180-degree or larger GRT (OR, 3.3; P = .04). All cases were treated with pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) and perfluoro-N-octane (PFCL). Perfluoropropane (C3F8) was used in 59% and silicone oil in 41%; the redetachment rate was significantly lower in gas cases (15% vs 39%) (P = .02). An encircling band, placed in 84% eyes, had a tendency to reduce redetachment (22% vs 36%) (P = .32). Lensectomy was performed in 61% of phakic eyes, with no effect on redetachment (20% vs 21%) (P = .92). On multivariate analysis, PVR and hypotony were significantly associated with redetachment. Conclusions: PPV with PFCL achieved high SSAS and FAS rates. PVR and hypotony were the main preoperative factors associated with anatomic failure. In cases without PVR, C3F8 tamponade significantly increased SSAS. Encircling scleral buckling showed a nonsignificant tendency toward an increase in SSAS. Lensectomy had no effect on SSAS.

RESUMEN

Zeins are commercially important proteins found in corn endosperms. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of altering zein levels in corn inbred lines carrying endosperm mutations with differential allelic dosage and analyze the effects on the composition, nutritive value, and starch digestibility of whole-plant corn silage (WPCS) at 5 storage lengths. Three inbred lines carrying 3 different endosperm modifiers (opaque-2 [o2], floury-2 [fl2], and soft endosperm-1 [h1]) were pollinated with 2 pollen sources to form pairs of near-isogenic lines with either 2 or 3 doses of the mutant allele for each endosperm modifier. The experiment was designed as a split-plot design with 3 replications. Pollinated genotype was the main plot factor, and storage length was the subplot-level factor. Agronomic precautions were taken to mimic hybrid WPCS to the extent possible. Samples were collected at approximately 30% dry matter (DM) using a forage harvester and ensiled in heat-sealed plastic bags for 0, 30, 60, 120, and 240 d. Thus, the experiment consisted of 30 treatments (6 genotypes × 5 storage lengths) and 90 ensiling units (3 replications per treatment). Measurements included nutrient analysis, including crude protein, soluble crude protein, amylase-treated neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, lignin, starch, fermentation end products, zein concentration, and in vitro starch digestibility (ivSD). The nutritional profile of the inbred-based silage samples was similar to hybrid values reported in literature. Significant differences were found in fresh (unfermented) sample kernels for endosperm vitreousness and zein profiles between and within isogenic pairs. The o2 homozygous (3 doses of mutant allele) had the highest reduction in vitreousness level (74.5 to 38%) and zein concentration (6.2 to 4.7% of DM) compared with the heterozygous counterpart (2 doses of mutant allele). All genotypes showed significant reduction of total zeins and α-zeins during progressive storage length. In vitro starch digestibility increased with storage length and had significant effects of genotype and storage length but not for genotype by storage length interaction, which suggests that the storage period did not attenuate the difference in ivSD between near-isogenic pairs caused by zeins in WPCS. Both total zeins and α-zeins showed a strong negative correlation with ivSD, which agrees with the general hypothesis that the degradation of zeins increases ruminal starch degradability. Homozygous o2 was the only mutant with significantly higher ivSD compared with the heterozygous version, which suggests that, if all other conditions remain constant in a WPCS systems, substantial reductions in endosperm α-zeins are required to significantly improve ivSD in the silo.

ABSTRACT Background : Gallstone ileus is a rare complication of cholelithiasis and mainly affects elder women. It is caused by gallstone migration through a cholecystoenteric fistula producing bowel obstruction, with the need for surgical treatment. Objective : The aim of this work was to describe the preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative variables of a case series of gallstone ileus and the incidence of recurrent gallstone ileus. Material and methods : We conducted an observational and retrospective study of patients undergoing surgery due to acute bowel obstruction caused by gallstone ileus between January 2009 and December 2021. The variables analyzed were imaging tests, comorbidities, surgical approach, type of surgery, morbidity and mortality and recurrent ileus. Results : Of 667 patients admitted with bowel obstruction, 21 had gallstone ileus (3.1%). The diagnosis was made by computed tomography scan in 80% of the cases. The surgical approach was laparotomy in 20 cases and 1 patient undergoing laparoscopy required conversion. Enterotomy with enterorrhaphy was the most common procedure used in 18 cases. The obstruction was treated by immediate surgery, while the biliary fistula was deferred in most cases because the risk of immediate treatment was very high. Morbidity was 38% and recurrence of gallstone ileus 4.7%. No deaths were reported. Conclusion : Gallstone ileus was a rare condition that was correctly diagnosed and timely treated with surgery, with a low incidence of recurrent gallstone ileus.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: The Genomes to Fields (G2F) 2022 Maize Genotype by Environment (GxE) Prediction Competition aimed to develop models for predicting grain yield for the 2022 Maize GxE project field trials, leveraging the datasets previously generated by this project and other publicly available data. DATA DESCRIPTION: This resource used data from the Maize GxE project within the G2F Initiative [1]. The dataset included phenotypic and genotypic data of the hybrids evaluated in 45 locations from 2014 to 2022. Also, soil, weather, environmental covariates data and metadata information for all environments (combination of year and location). Competitors also had access to ReadMe files which described all the files provided. The Maize GxE is a collaborative project and all the data generated becomes publicly available [2]. The dataset used in the 2022 Prediction Competition was curated and lightly filtered for quality and to ensure naming uniformity across years.

RESUMEN

KEY MESSAGE: A novel locus was discovered on chromosome 7 associated with a lesion mimic in maize; this lesion mimic had a quantitative and heritable phenotype and was predicted better via subset genomic markers than whole genome markers across diverse environments. Lesion mimics are a phenotype of leaf micro-spotting in maize (Zea mays L.), which can be early signs of biotic or abiotic stresses. Dissecting its inheritance is helpful to understand how these loci behave across different genetic backgrounds. Here, 538 maize recombinant inbred lines (RILs) segregating for a novel lesion mimic were quantitatively phenotyped in Georgia, Texas, and Wisconsin. These RILs were derived from three bi-parental crosses using a tropical pollinator (Tx773) as the common parent crossed with three inbreds (LH195, LH82, and PB80). While this lesion mimic was heritable across three environments based on phenotypic ([Formula: see text] = 0.68) and genomic ([Formula: see text] = 0.91) data, transgressive segregation was observed. A genome-wide association study identified a single novel locus on chromosome 7 (at 70.6 Mb) also covered by a quantitative trait locus interval (69.3-71.0 Mb), explaining 11-15% of the variation, depending on the environment. One candidate gene identified in this region, Zm00001eb308070, is related to the abscisic acid pathway involving in cell death. Genomic predictions were applied to genome-wide markers (39,611 markers) contrasted with a marker subset (51 markers). Population structure explained more variation than environment in genomic prediction, but other substantial genetic background effects were additionally detected. Subset markers explained substantially less genetic variation (24.9%) for the lesion mimic than whole genome markers (55.4%) in the model, yet predicted the lesion mimic better (0.56-0.66 vs. 0.26-0.29). These results indicate this lesion mimic phenotype was less affected by environment than by epistasis and genetic background effects, which explain its transgressive segregation.

Bouveret's syndrome is a rare cause of biliary ileus, with a high morbimortality. It is caused by the migration of a stone, usually large, into the gastrointestinal tract through a cholecystoduodenal fistula. The objective of this scientific letter is to present a patient with a previous stage of the disease where the fistula is constituted, but without migration of the calculus, so that the timely diagnosis would have a favorable impact on the treatment and prognosis because the obstructive intestinal condition is not established.

RESUMEN

Chemical fingerprints in otoliths are commonly used as natural habitat markers in fishes. Alternatively, the first dorsal fin spine can provide valuable chemical information and may be more suitable for studying (i) endangered fish species that cannot be sacrificed for their otoliths or (ii) fishes for which otoliths might not be available because of management or commercial reasons. Here, we studied multi-element chemistry of fin spine edges collected from Atlantic bluefin tuna (ABFT; Thunnus thynnus) (Linnaeus, 1758) to investigate the utility of the fin spine edge as a natural habitat marker. We determined stable isotopic δ18O and δ13C ratios, as well as concentrations of the tracer elements Mg, Mn, Li, Ba, and Sr, at the edge of ABFT fin spines, and then we used these measures to discriminate ABFT individuals among capture regions (i.e., the eastern Atlantic Ocean or Mediterranean Sea). Isotope ratios and tracer element concentrations, and especially a combined multi-element approach, were able to effectively discriminate individuals by capture region. The Mg, Mn, Li, and δ18O concentrations were the strongest variables driving this discrimination. Overall, our results demonstrate that chemical signatures are consistently retained in the ABFT fin spine edge and support the use of fin spine edges for discerning habitat use. The fin spine chemistry as a minimally invasive sampling method, combined with otolith chemistry, genetic markers, and tagging efforts can help us to reconstruct fish movements, providing a deeper understanding of the spatial population dynamics of this iconic fish species.

RESUMEN

Around the world many people loss a body member for many reasons, where advances of technology may be useful to help these people to improve the quality of their lives. Then, designing a technologically advanced prosthesis with natural movements is worthy for scientific, commercial, and social reasons. Thus, research of manufacturing, designing, and signal processing may lead up to a low-cost affordable prosthesis. This manuscript presents a low-cost design proposal for an electromyographic electronic system, which is characterized by a neural network based process. Moreover, a hand-type prosthesis is presented and controlled by using the processed electromyographic signals for a required particular use. For this purpose, the user performs several movements by using the healthy-hand to get some electromyographic signals. After that, the obtained signals are processed in a neural network based controller. Once an usable behavior is obtained, an exact replica of controlled motions are adapted for the other hand by using the designed prosthesis. The characterization process of bioelectrical signals was performed by training twenty characteristics obtained from the original raw signal in contrast with other papers in which seven characteristics have been tested on average. The proposed model reached a 95.2% computer test accuracy and 93% accuracy in a real environment experiment. The platform was tested via online and offline, where the best response was obtained in the online execution time.

RESUMEN

Large-scale investigations of maize kernel traits important to researchers, breeders, and processors require high throughput methods, which are presently lacking. To address this bottleneck, we developed a novel flatbed platform that automatically acquires and analyzes multiwavelength near-infrared (NIR hyperspectral) images of maize kernels precisely enough to support robust predictions of protein content, density, and endosperm vitreousness. The upward facing-camera design and the automated ability to analyze the embryo or abgerminal sides of each individual kernel in a sample with the appropriate side-specific model helped to produce a superior combination of throughput and prediction accuracy compared to other single-kernel platforms. Protein was predicted to within 0.85% (root mean square error of prediction), density to within 0.038 g/cm3, and endosperm vitreousness percentage to within 6.3%. Kernel length and width were also accurately measured so that each kernel in a rapidly scanned sample was comprehensively characterized.

RESUMEN

Anadromous alewife Alosa pseudoharengus (n = 202; mean ± s.d. fork length = 231 ± 14 mm) were captured from 10 May to 27 June 2018 in an upper watershed lake on the Isthmus of Chignecto, Canada (45°57'N, 64°14'W). Thirty individuals (mean ± s.d. fork length = 250 ± 12 mm) were captured in an adjacent estuary downstream of a tide gate on 25 April 2018. Comparing estuarine to freshwater specimens, mean gonad mass and gonadosomatic indices in males and females decreased approximately 40% and 60%, and 31% and 50%, respectively. Individuals were characterized as pre-spawners in the estuary and spawners in the lake. Males maintained similar body condition throughout the spawning run whereas female condition decreased 9.4% between the estuary and lake. Stomach fullness decreased comparing estuarine and freshwater specimens, yet 93% of stomachs examined from individuals captured in the lake contained prey. Most males fed throughout all spawning stages (3%-17% empty stomachs), while all females fed during pre- and post-spawning stages and some fasted during spawning (11% empty stomachs). Cumulative prey curve never reached an asymptote, either weekly or for the entire sampling period, so freshwater diet may not have been completely described. Calanoid copepods (79.3%IA ) were a diet staple, with the secondary prey of mayfly nymphs (O. Ephemeroptera) consumed more by females (13.6%IA ) than males (6.2%IA ). PERMANOVA and PERMDISP analyses revealed significant dietary differences in freshwater were weekly and not due to dispersion effects, thus most likely due to feeding on various development stages of insect species. Our results challenge the long-held paradigm that anadromous A. pseudoharengus fast during the spawning migration.

RESUMEN

In this study, the authors examined late atretic follicles in the ovaries of Atlantic bluefin tuna, Thunnus thynnus (Linnaeus 1758), at different times of the year using transmitted light and epifluorescence microscopy. Atresia (degeneration and resorption of developing ovarian follicles) is a natural process involved in fecundity downregulation in teleosts and is substantially enhanced in stressful conditions. Early (α and ß) atretic stages of yolked oocytes have a relatively short duration in seasonally reproducing species, whereas later (γ and δ) atretic follicles (LAF) persist for longer time in the ovary, serving as a sign of previous vitellogenic activity. LAF can thus be used as reliable markers of maturity during non-reproductive periods. Lipofuscin granules accumulate in the cytoplasm of LAF cells as a result of lysosomal digestion of oocyte components. Taking advantage of the well-known autofluorescent properties of lipofuscins, LAF may be identified in unstained histological sections under fluorescence microscopy using appropriate excitation and emission wavelengths. The authors explore in this study the applicability of fluorescence microscopy to provide a fast and effective method to assess late atresia in fishes. This method may be particularly useful to determine sexual maturity in individuals sampled long after the spawning season, where LAF are difficult to detect in standard histological sections. Furthermore, LAF autofluorescence provides a rapid way to quantify late atresia in fishes using image analysis.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The ideal technique for lymph node staging for patients with pathologically confirmed node-positive breast cancer at diagnosis and neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) is unclear. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to analyze the feasibility of wire/clip localization and sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) for the axillary staging of these patients. METHODS: We conducted a prospective study in which lymph node staging was performed using wire localization of positive lymph nodes and an SLNB with dual tracer. All patients who presented no metastatic involvement of the sentinel lymph node (SLN) or clip/wire-marked lymph node were spared an axillary lymph node dissection (ALND). The multidisciplinary committee agreed on axillary treatment for patients with lymph node involvement. RESULTS: Forty-two patients met the inclusion criteria. We identified and extirpated the clip/wire-marked node in all patients (100%), with SLNB performed successfully in 95.3% of patients. The SLN and wire-marked node matched in 80% of patients; 73.8% of patients did not undergo ALND. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: Several studies have evaluated the efficacy of various procedures for lymph node marking for women with prechemotherapy lymph node involvement. Most of the studies reported high identification rates (> 94.8%), with false negative rates of < 7%. Similarly, our study allows us to conclude that combined axillary marking (clip and SLNB) in patients with metastatic lymph node at diagnosis and NAC offers a high identification rate (100%) and a high correlation between the wire-marked lymph node and the SLN (80%). This procedure has enabled the suppression of ALND for a significant number of patients (73%).

RESUMEN

Feeding ecology of Atlantic bluefin tuna (ABFT, Thunnus thynnus), from the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, Canada, was assessed by stomach content and stable isotope analyses. Stomachs were collected from 161 individuals averaging 249 ± 20 cm in curved fork length and 248 ± 64 in round weight. The fish were caught by commercial fishing boats using rod and reel gear during fall 2015-2017. Liver and muscle samples were taken from 133 fish for stable isotope analysis. Atlantic mackerel (Scomber scombrus) was the most abundant prey item in 2015 (%Alimentary index, %AI = 88.94), whereas in 2016 and 2017 the ABFT diet was mainly composed of Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus) (%AI = 56.73 and %AI = 77.23, respectively). PERMANOVA analysis revealed significant differences in the dietary composition between years. δ15N values varied between 12.3 and 15.4‰ for muscle and between 11.1 and 14.6‰ for liver. δ13C values ranged from -19.9 to -16.5‰ for muscle and from -20.7 to -17.3‰ for liver. PERMANOVA analysis also detected inter-annual isotopic differences in both muscle and liver samples (p < 0.05). Daily rations (DR) were similar in 2015 and 2016 (DR = 1.02 ± 0.32 and DR = 1.10 ± 0.21, respectively), but higher in 2017 (DR = 1.73 ± 0.54).

We think that a nice, shining place, which is attractive to us, assures the correct hygiene. It is indisputable that a good hygiene needs of a place structurally pleasant to our senses but that also it agree with the hygiene norms, if this exists an excellent base is created for the application of the good practices of manipulation. To identify what is happen in a center of food elaboration in Havana after a large investment and what the opinion about the manipulators is to increase the employment of the good practices of manipulation. Two examinations were realized an initial previous to the repair and a later one, it was proved that improvement of the conditions increase hygienic sanitarily but the shortcomings training / procedure were supported in the second place what points at the absence of sensitization of the manipulators and the administration. The workers raise several factors as unfavorable elements: as not demand and control, the instability of the direction between others. Also they realized proposals like putting cartels to emphasize conducts, stimulation of the out-standing manipulator, support and administrative demand. In this center when the control of the direction was valued it was proved that it was not systematical that few evidences existed and a progress plan had not been designed.

RESUMEN

This study provides sound evidence of the spawning activity of common dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus) in the Gulf of Cadiz (southwest Spain) during summer months. Along with waters off Côte d'Ivoire, this area adjacent to the Mediterranean Sea is the easternmost Atlantic spawning ground documented for the species. All the fish analysed (5 males and 15 females) were at spawning stage, except the smallest female (61.5 cm in fork length), which might not have yet reached sexual maturation. The oceanographic conditions during the samplings were similar to those occurring during the peak spawning season in the Gulf of Mexico. The study results are consistent with recent genetic studies indicating differentiation between Mediterranean and Atlantic dolphinfish populations, with the Strait of Gibraltar representing a boundary between two distinct reproductive units. The present results may contribute to improve the understanding of the dynamics of dolphinfish population and the management of eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean stocks.
