RESUMEN

The confinement of waves in open systems represents a fundamental phenomenon extensively explored across various branches of wave physics. Recently, significant attention is directed toward bound states in the continuum (BIC), a class of modes that are trapped but do not decay in an otherwise unbounded continuum. Here, the theoretical investigation and experimental demonstration of the existence of quasi-bound states in the continuum (QBIC) for ultrasonic waves are achieved by leveraging an elastic Fabry-Pérot metasurface resonator. Several intriguing properties of the ultrasound quasi-bound states in the continuum that are robust to parameter scanning are unveiled, and experimental evidence of a remarkable Q-factor of 350 at ≈1 MHz frequency, far exceeding the state-of-the-art using a fully acoustic underwater system is presented. The findings contribute novel insights into the understanding of BIC for acoustic waves, offering a new paradigm for the design of efficient, ultra-high Q-factor ultrasound devices.

RESUMEN

Pactermines E and F (1 and 2), two new pregnane alkaloids were isolated from the whole plant of Pachysandra terminalis Sieb. et Zucc. Their structures were determined by physicochemical properties and spectroscopic methods including 1D, 2D NMR, IR, HR-ESI-MS data. Cytotoxic activities against three human cancer A549, HCT116 and SW620 cell lines of the isolated compounds were evaluated by CCK8 method. However, all compounds showed no significant activity against the three cancer cells (IC50>100 µM) except for compound 1, which showed inhibitory effects against HCT116 cells with IC50 values of 84.6 µM.

Peripheral nerve injuries (PNIs) represent a significant clinical challenge, particularly in elderly populations where axonal remyelination and regeneration are impaired. Developing therapies to enhance these processes is crucial for improving PNI repair outcomes. Glutamate carboxypeptidase II (GCPII) is a neuropeptidase that plays a pivotal role in modulating glutamate signaling through its enzymatic cleavage of the abundant neuropeptide N-acetyl aspartyl glutamate (NAAG) to liberate glutamate. Within the PNS, GCPII is expressed in Schwann cells and activated macrophages, and its expression is amplified with aging. In this study, we explored the therapeutic potential of inhibiting GCPII activity following PNI. We report significant GCPII protein and activity upregulation following PNI, which was normalized by the potent and selective GCPII inhibitor 2-(phosphonomethyl)-pentanedioic acid (2-PMPA). In vitro, 2-PMPA robustly enhanced myelination in dorsal root ganglion (DRG) explants. In vivo, using a sciatic nerve crush injury model in aged mice, 2-PMPA accelerated remyelination, as evidenced by increased myelin sheath thickness and higher numbers of remyelinated axons. These findings suggest that GCPII inhibition may be a promising therapeutic strategy to enhance remyelination and potentially improve functional recovery after PNI, which is especially relevant in elderly PNI patients where this process is compromised.

Objective: To explore the impact of the level of differentiation in a minimum of two follicles with a diameter of ≥18 mm on the outcome of controlled ovarian hyperstimulation on the day of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) administration. Methods: Single-center data from January 2018 to December 2021 was retrospectively analyzed for 1,199 patients with fresh embryo transfer for assisted reproduction. The absolute value of the standard deviation of the follicle size of at least 2 follicles ≥18 mm in diameter in both ovaries on the day of hCG was taken as the degree of differentiation of the dominant follicle after ovulation induction, based on the standard deviation response to the degree of dispersion of the data. The degree of follicular differentiation was divided into 3 groups according to the size of the value, and the general clinical conditions, laboratory indexes, and clinical outcomes of the patients in the 3 groups were compared. Results: Among the three groups, the body mass index (BMI) of the ≤1s group was lower than that of the other two groups (P< 0.05), while the follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and Anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) were higher (P< 0.05), and the implantation rate and clinical pregnancy rate were significantly higher than those of the other two groups (P< 0.01). After multifactorial logistic regression to correct for confounding factors, with the ≤1s group as the reference, the implantation rate, hCG-positive rate, clinical pregnancy rate and live birth rate of embryo transfer in the ≥2S group were significantly lower (P< 0.01). The results of curve fitting analysis showed that the live birth rate decreased gradually with the increase of the absolute standard deviation (P=0.0079). Conclusion: Differences in follicle diameters ≥18 mm on the day of hCG injection did not have an impact on embryo quality, but had an impact on pregnancy outcomes. The less the variation in follicle size, the more homogeneous the follicle development and the higher the likelihood of live births.

Purpose: The objective of this study was to investigate latent classes of oral health and the factors associated with them in acutely admitted elderly inpatients. Patients and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using purposive sampling to survey Chinese older-adult acutely inpatients. Data was collected utilizing several instruments, including a general information questionnaire, Brief Oral Health Status Examination (BOHSE), Oral Frailty Index-8 (OFI-8), Mini-Nutritional Assessment Short Form (MNA-SF), and Frailty Screening Questionnaire (FSQ). Latent class analysis was applied to identify distinct categories of oral health among elderly inpatients, and multinomial logistic regression was employed to analyze the factors associated with different oral health categories. Results: In this study, a total of 504 elderly patients were ultimately included, leading to the identification of three latent classes of oral health: "oral health-low level group (41.27%)", "oral health-moderate level group (25.4%)", and "oral health-high level group (33.33%)". The findings revealed that patients with advanced age, elevated neutrophil percentage, and higher C-reactive protein (CRP) values were more likely to be classified in the low oral health group. Additionally, individuals experiencing malnutrition and frailty had a higher risk of falling into the low oral health category. Those with comorbidities and oral frailty were more prevalent in the moderate oral health group. At the same time, elderly patients with higher BMI (22.95±3.043) ratios were more likely to be categorized in the high oral health group. Conclusion: This study sheds light on three distinct latent classes of oral health among acutely admitted elderly inpatients. These findings underscore the importance of healthcare professionals focusing on the assessment and health education of elderly patients' oral health. Furthermore, personalized interventions should be developed to promote healthy aging, with particularly attention to enhancing oral health outcomes in this population.

BACKGROUND: Nonadherence to medication among patients with cardiovascular diseases undermines the desired therapeutic outcomes. eHealth interventions emerge as promising strategies to effectively tackle this issue. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to conduct a network meta-analysis (NMA) to compare and rank the efficacy of various eHealth interventions in improving medication adherence among patients with cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). METHODS: A systematic search strategy was conducted in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane, China National Knowledge Infrastructure Library (CNKI), China Science and Technology Journal Database (Weipu), and WanFang databases to search for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published from their inception on January 15, 2024. We carried out a frequentist NMA to compare the efficacy of various eHealth interventions. The quality of the literature was assessed using the risk of bias tool from the Cochrane Handbook (version 2.0), and extracted data were analyzed using Stata16.0 (StataCorp LLC) and RevMan5.4 software (Cochrane Collaboration). The certainty of evidence was evaluated using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluations (GRADE) approach. RESULTS: A total of 21 RCTs involving 3904 patients were enrolled. The NMA revealed that combined interventions (standardized mean difference [SMD] 0.89, 95% CI 0.22-1.57), telephone support (SMD 0.68, 95% CI 0.02-1.33), telemonitoring interventions (SMD 0.70, 95% CI 0.02-1.39), and mobile phone app interventions (SMD 0.65, 95% CI 0.01-1.30) were statistically superior to usual care. However, SMS compared to usual care showed no statistical difference. Notably, the combined intervention, with a surface under the cumulative ranking curve of 79.3%, appeared to be the most effective option for patients with CVDs. Regarding systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure outcomes, the combined intervention also had the highest probability of being the best intervention. CONCLUSIONS: The research indicates that the combined intervention (SMS text messaging and telephone support) has the greatest likelihood of being the most effective eHealth intervention to improve medication adherence in patients with CVDs, followed by telemonitoring, telephone support, and app interventions. The results of these network meta-analyses can provide crucial evidence-based support for health care providers to enhance patients' medication adherence. Given the differences in the design and implementation of eHealth interventions, further large-scale, well-designed multicenter trials are needed. BACKGROUND: The performance of GPT-4 in nursing examinations within the Chinese context has not yet been thoroughly evaluated. OBJECTIVE: To assess the performance of GPT-4 on multiple-choice and open-ended questions derived from nursing examinations in the Chinese context. METHODS: The data sets of the Chinese National Nursing Licensure Examination spanning 2021 to 2023 were used to evaluate the accuracy of GPT-4 in multiple-choice questions. The performance of GPT-4 on open-ended questions was examined using 18 case-based questions. RESULTS: For multiple-choice questions, GPT-4 achieved an accuracy of 71.0% (511/720). For open-ended questions, the responses were evaluated for cosine similarity, logical consistency, and information quality, all of which were found to be at a moderate level. CONCLUSION: GPT-4 performed well at addressing queries on basic knowledge. However, it has notable limitations in answering open-ended questions. Nursing educators should weigh the benefits and challenges of GPT-4 for integration into nursing education.

Parlous structure integrity of the cathode and erratic interfacial microdynamics under high potential take responsibility for the degradation of solid-state lithium metal batteries (LMBs). Here, high-voltage LMBs have been operated by modulating the polymer electrolyte intrinsic structure through an intermediate dielectric constant solvent and further inducing the gradient solid-state electrolyte interphase. Benefiting from the chemical adsorption between trimethyl phosphate (TMP) and the cathode, the gradient interphase rich in LiPFxOy and LiF is induced, thereby ensuring the structural integrity and interface compatibility of the commercial LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM811) cathode even at the 4.9 V cutoff voltage. Eventually, the specific capacity of NCM811|Li full cell based on TMP-modulated polymer electrolyte increased by 27.7% from 4.5 to 4.9 V. Such a universal screening method of electrolyte solvents and its derived electrode interfacial manipulation strategy opens fresh avenues for quasi-solid-state LMBs with high specific energy.

Cigarette smoke (CS) has been generally recognized as a chief carcinogenic factor in renal cell carcinoma (RCC). The stimulative effect of CS on renal cancer stem cells (RCSCs) has been described previously. The Sonic Hedgehog (SHH) pathway plays an essential role in self-renewal, cell growth, drug resistance, metastasis, and recurrence of cancer stem cells (CSCs). Renal cancer-related gene ΔNp63α is highly expressed in renal epithelial tissues and contributes to the RCSCs characteristics of tumors. The aim of this study was to elucidate the role of ΔNp63α and the SHH pathway on the activity of RCSCs induced by CS through a series of in vivo and in vitro studies. It was shown that in renal cancer tissues, ΔNp63α and RCSCs markers in smokers are expressed higher than that in non-smokers. RCSCs were effectively enriched by tumor sphere formation assay. Besides, CS increased the expression of RCSCs markers and the capability of sphere-forming in vitro and in vivo. Moreover, the SHH pathway was activated, and the specialized inhibitor alleviated the promotion of CS on RCSCs. ΔNp63α activated the SHH pathway and promoted CS-induced enhancement of RCSCs activity. These findings indicate that ΔNp63α positively regulates the activity of CS-induced RCSCs via the SHH pathway.

BACKGROUND: Cellular senescence is essential to TME development, progression, and remodeling. Few studies have examined cellular senescence in HCC after TACE. Investigating the relationship between cellular senescence, post-TACE prognosis, the TME, and immune treatment responses is crucial. METHODS: We analyzed the GSE104580 dataset to identify DEGs. A cellular senescence-related signature was developed using LASSO Cox regression in the GSE14520 dataset and validated in the ICGC dataset. High- and low-risk subgroups were compared using GSVA and GSEA. Correlation studies were conducted to explore the relationship between the prognostic model, immune infiltration, immunotherapy response, and drug sensitivity. RESULTS: A cellular senescence-related signature comprising FOXM1, CDK1, CHEK1, and SERPINE1 was created and validated. High-risk patients showed significantly lower OS than low-risk patients. High-risk patients had carcinogenetic pathways activated, immunosuppressive cells infiltrated, and immunomodulatory genes overexpressed. They also showed higher sensitivity to EPZ004777_1237 and MK-2206_1053 and potential benefits from GSK-3 inhibitor IX, nortriptyline, lestaurtinib, and JNK-9L. CONCLUSIONS: This study constructed a cellular senescence-related signature that could be used to predict HCC patients' responses to and prognosis after TACE treatment, aiding in the development of personalized treatment plans.

Facial recognition technology (FRT) has emerged as a powerful tool for public governance and security, but its rapid adoption has also raised significant concerns about privacy, civil liberties, and ethical implications. This paper critically examines the current rules and policies governing FRT, highlighting the tensions between state and corporate interests on one hand, and individual rights and ethical considerations on the other. The study also investigates international legal frameworks aimed at protecting individual rights and privacy, arguing that current legislative measures often fall short of robust scholarly standards and international human rights norms. The paper concludes with recommendations for developing principled and adaptable governance frameworks that harness the benefits of FRT while mitigating its risks and negative impacts, underscoring the importance of placing human rights and ethics at the center of regulating this transformative technology.

Ischemic stroke can lead to systemic inflammation, which can activate peripheral immune cells, causing neuroinflammation and brain injury. Meningeal lymphatics play a crucial role in transporting solutes and immune cells out of the brain and draining them into cervical lymph nodes (CLNs). However, the role of meningeal lymphatics in regulating systemic inflammation during the reperfusion stage after ischemia is not well understood. In this study, we demonstrated that brain infarct size, neuronal loss, and the effector function of inflammatory macrophage subsets were reduced after ischemia-reperfusion and disruption of meningeal lymphatics. Spatial memory function was improved in the late stage of ischemic stroke following meningeal lymphatic disruption. Brain-infiltrating immune cells, including neutrophils, monocytes, and T and natural killer cells, were reduced after cerebral ischemia-reperfusion and meningeal lymphatic disruption. Single-cell RNA sequencing analysis revealed that meningeal lymphatic disruption reprogrammed the transcriptome profile related to chemotaxis and leukocyte migration in CLN lymphatic endothelial cells (LECs), and it also decreased chemotactic CCN1 expression in floor LECs. Replenishment of CCN1 through intraventricular injection increased brain infarct size and neuronal loss, while restoring numbers of macrophages/microglia in the brains of meningeal lymphatic-disrupted mice after ischemic stroke. Blocking CCN1 in cerebrospinal fluid reduced brain infarcts and improves spatial memory function after ischemia-reperfusion injury. In summary, this study indicates that CCN1-mediated detrimental inflammation was alleviated after cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury and meningeal lymphatic disruption. CCN1 represents a novel therapeutic target for inhibiting systemic inflammation in the brain-CLN axis after ischemia-reperfusion injury.

Alphaherpesvirus is a widespread pathogen that causes diverse diseases in humans and animals and can severely damage host health. Alphaherpesvirus particles comprise a DNA core, capsid, tegument and envelope; the tegument is located between the nuclear capsid and envelope. According to biochemical and proteomic analyses of alphaherpesvirus particles, the tegument contains at least 24 viral proteins and plays an important role in the alphaherpesvirus life cycle. This article reviews the important role of tegument proteins and their interactions during the viral life cycle to provide a reference and inspiration for understanding alphaherpesvirus infection pathogenesis and identifying new antiviral strategies.

Thyroid hormone (TH) is essential for maintaining normal physiological processes during pregnancy, including the metabolism of energy materials in both the mother and fetus and the growth and development of fetal bone and nervous system. TH can act on the liver, fat, and other tissues and organs to participate in lipid synthesis and breakdown through multiple pathways. Consequently, abnormal thyroid function is often accompanied by lipid metabolism disorders. Both clinical and subclinical hypothyroidism, as well as dyslipidemia during pregnancy, have been shown to be associated with an increased risk of multiple adverse pregnancy outcomes. Recently, there has been an increased interest in studying the alteration of lipidomic and hypothyroidism (both clinical and subclinical hypothyroidism) during pregnancy. Studies have suggested that altered lipid molecules might be used as potential biomarker and associated with adverse maternal and neonatal outcome. Thus, we summarized the associations between lipid metabolism and clinical or subclinical hypothyroidism during pregnancy in this review. Then, we discussed the underlying mechanisms of thyroid dysfunction and lipid metabolism. In addition, we reviewed the possible effect of dyslipidemia on pregnancy and neonatal outcome. However, the relationship between hypothyroidism during pregnancy and changes in the lipid profile and how to intervene in the occurrence and development of adverse pregnancy outcomes require further study.

Highly efficient degradation of antibiotics is a huge challenge due to the extremely stable molecules and the potential for biological resistance. However, conventional degradation methods are limited to lower degradation rate, higher energy consumption and secondary pollution. Herein, we report a new Cu-based metal-organic framework (MOF), featuring classical planar trinuclear [Cu3(µ3-O)]4+ clusters within the pores. The presence of the rich open metal sites and the large pore ratio, as well as the high catalytic activity of Cu2+ ions, are conducive to boosting the degradation of various antibiotics (>95%) under the activation of peroxymonosulfate. Remarkably, this is the first MOF to achieve such exceptional catalytic performance under neutral and even alkaline conditions, which exceeds those of most reported materials. Mechanism investigation demonstrates that multiple active species were produced and promoted the degradation synergistically during the advanced oxidation processes.

Background: There is controversy regarding sex differences in short-term mortality in acute type A aortic dissection (ATAAD). Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the impact of sex differences on 30-day operative mortality after ATAAD surgery and to determine if other covariates modify the association. Methods: Consecutive patients (N = 5670) with surgically repaired ATAAD were identified from the multicenter China 5A study. The primary outcome was operative mortality. The age dependency was modeled using a cubic spline curve. Results: There were 1,503 females (26.5%) and 4,167 males (73.5%). Females were older and had a lower percentage of comorbidities compared with males. Females had higher mortality compared to males (10.2% vs 8.2%, P = 0.019); however, there was no difference after propensity analyses (adjusted OR: 1.334 [95% CI: 0.918-1.938]). There was an interaction with sex and age (P interaction = 0.035): older age was associated with higher odds of operative mortality among females (OR: 1.045 [95% CI: 1.029-1.061]) compared with males (OR: 1.025 [95% CI: 1.016-1.035]). The risk of mortality for males and females appears to diverge at 55 years of age (P interaction = 0.019): females under 55 years of age had similar odds to males (OR: 0.852 [95% CI: 0.603-1.205]) but higher odds when over 55 years (OR: 1.420 [95% CI: 1.096-1.839]) compared to males. Conclusions: Under the age of 55 years, females have similar odds of operative mortality compared with males; however, over the age of 55 years females have higher odds than males. Migratory birds are important vectors for virus transmission, how migratory birds recognize viruses and viruses are sustained in birds is still enigmatic. As an animal model for waterfowl among migratory birds, studying and dissecting the antiviral immunity and viral evasion in duck cells may pave a path to deciphering these puzzles. Here, we studied the mechanism of antiviral autophagy mediated by duck STING in DEF cells. The results collaborated that duck STING could significantly enhance LC3B-II/I turnover, LC3B-EGFP puncta formation, and mCherry/EGFP ratio, indicating that duck STING could induce autophagy. The autophagy induced by duck STING is not affected by shRNA knockdown of ATG5 expression, deletion of the C-terminal tail of STING, or TBK1 inhibitor BX795 treatment, indicating that duck STING activated non-classical selective autophagy is independent of interaction with TBK1, TBK1 phosphorylation, and interferon (IFN) signaling. The STING R235A mutant and Sar1A/B kinase mutant abolished duck STING induced autophagy, suggesting binding with cGAMP and COPII complex mediated transport are the critical prerequisite. Duck STING interacted with LC3B through LIR motifs to induce autophagy, the LIR 4/7 motif mutants of duck STING abolished the interaction with LC3B, and neither activated autophagy nor IFN expression, indicating that duck STING associates with LC3B directed autophagy and dictated innate immunity activation. Finally, we found that duck STING mediated autophagy significantly inhibited duck plague virus (DPV) infection via ubiquitously degraded viral proteins. Our study may shed light on one scenario about the control and evasion of diseases transmitted by migratory birds.

BACKGROUND: Thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) is a minimally invasive technique used to treat type B aortic dissections. Left subclavian artery (LSA) reconstruction is required when treating patients with involvement of LSA. The best antiplatelet therapy after LSA reconstruction is presently uncertain. METHODS: This study retrospectively analyzed 245 type B aortic dissection patients who underwent left subclavian artery revascularization during TEVAR. Out of 245 patients, 159 (64.9%) were in the single antiplatelet therapy (SAPT) group, receiving only aspirin, and 86 (35.1%) were in the dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) group, receiving aspirin combined with clopidogrel. During the 6-month follow-up, primary endpoints included hemorrhagic events (general bleeding and hemorrhagic strokes), while secondary endpoints comprised ischemic events (left upper limb ischemia, ischemic stroke, and thrombotic events), as well as death and leakage events. Both univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses were performed on hemorrhagic and ischemic events, with the Kaplan-Meier method used to generate the survival curve. RESULTS: During the six-month follow-up, the incidence of hemorrhagic events in the DAPT group was higher (8.2% vs. 30.2%, P < 0.001). No significant differences were observed in ischemic events, death, or leakage events among the different antiplatelet treatment schemes. Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that DAPT (HR: 2.22, 95% CI: 1.07-4.60, P = 0.032) and previous chronic conditions (HR:3.88, 95% CI: 1.24-12.14, P = 0.020) significantly affected the occurrence of hemorrhagic events. Chronic conditions in this study encompassed depression, vitiligo, and cholecystolithiasis. Carotid subclavian bypass (CSB) group (HR:0.29, 95% CI: 0.12-0.68, P = 0.004) and single-branched stent graft (SBSG) group (HR:0.26, 95% CI: 0.13-0.50, P < 0.001) had a lower rate of ischemic events than fenestration TEVAR (F-TEVAR). Survival analysis over 6 months revealed a lower risk of bleeding associated with SAPT during hemorrhagic events (P = 0.043). CONCLUSIONS: In type B aortic dissection patients undergoing LSA blood flow reconstruction after synchronous TEVAR, the bleeding risk significantly decreases with the SAPT regimen, and there is no apparent ischemic compensation within 6 months. Patients with previous chronic conditions have a higher risk of bleeding. The CSB group and SBSG group have less ischemic risk compared to F-TEVAR group.

Foxes are susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 in laboratory settings, and there have also been reports of natural infections of both SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2 in foxes. In this study, we assessed the binding capacities of fox ACE2 to important sarbecoviruses, including SARS-CoV, SARS-CoV-2, and animal-origin SARS-CoV-2 related viruses. Our findings demonstrated that fox ACE2 exhibits broad binding capabilities to receptor-binding domains (RBDs) of sarbecoviruses. We further determined the cryo-EM structures of fox ACE2 complexed with RBDs of SARS-CoV, SARS-CoV-2 prototype (PT), and Omicron BF.7. Through structural analysis, we identified that the K417 mutation can weaken the ability of SARS-CoV-2 sub-variants to bind to fox ACE2, thereby reducing the susceptibility of foxes to SARS-CoV-2 sub-variants. In addition, the Y498 residue in the SARS-CoV RBD plays a crucial role in forming a vital cation-π interaction with K353 in the fox ACE2 receptor. This interaction is the primary determinant for the higher affinity of the SARS-CoV RBD compared to that of the SARS-CoV-2 PT RBD. These results indicate that foxes serve as potential hosts for numerous sarbecoviruses, highlighting the critical importance of surveillance efforts.

Enterovirus 71 (EV71), a prominent pathogen associated with hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD), has been reported worldwide. To date, the advancement of effective drugs targeting EV71 remains in the preliminary experimental stage. In this study, magnolol demonstrated a significant dose-dependent inhibition of EV71 replication in vitro. It upregulated the overall expression level of nuclear factor erythroid 2 - related factor 2 (Nrf2) and facilitated its nucleus translocation, resulting in the increased expression of various ferroptosis inhibitory genes. This process led to a reduction in reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation induced by viral infection. Additionally, magnolol exhibited a broad-spectrum antiviral effect against enteroviruses. Notably, treatment with magnolol substantially enhanced the survival rate of EV71-infected mice, attenuated viral load in heart, liver, brain, and limb tissues, and mitigated tissue inflammation. Taken together, magnolol emerges as a promising candidate for the development of anti-EV71 drugs.
