OBJECTIVE: To investigate the diagnostic value of CEUS in atypical-enhanced PTC. METHODS: The clinical data, qualitative and quantitative parameters of CEUS in 177 Iso/hyper-enhanced thyroid nodules with definite pathological results were retrospectively analyzed in the Lanzhou University Second Hospital from June 2019 to January 2021. And the clinical value of CEUS in the diagnosis of atypical-enhanced PTC was assessed using univariate and multivariate analysis. RESULTS: Among the 177 thyroid nodules, 59 were benign and 118 were PTC. There were significant differences in age, enhancement border, ring enhancement, speed of wash in, speed of wash out, enhancement pattern, capsule interruption, time to peak, time to wash out, RT, TPH, and TTP (P < 0.05). Multivariate analysis showed unclear enhancement border and concentric enhancement were independent risk factors for the diagnosis of atypical-enhanced PTC by CEUS. The sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV, and accuracy of the model in diagnosing atypical-enhanced PTC were 88.1%, 71.2%, 86.0%, 75.0%, and 82.5%, respectively. The area under the curve (AUC) of the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was 0.910. CONCLUSION: The diagnosis of atypical-enhanced PTC can be better performed by enhancement characteristics and time intensity curve (TIC) of CEUS, which have a good clinical application value.

OBJECTIVES: To identify characteristics of preoperative contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) that could predict early recurrence after curative resection of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). METHODS: From January 2017 to September 2022, a total of 110 patients with PDAC (all confirmed by samples obtained via operation) who underwent CEUS within 1 month before surgery were enrolled. We proposed five CEUS enhancement patterns (Pattern I, homogeneous enhancement; Pattern II, heterogeneous enhancement without cystic components; pattern III, ring enhancement; Pattern IV, starry enhancement; Pattern V, heterogeneous enhancement with cystic components) of PDAC. Clinical-pathologic and CEUS characteristics for predicting early recurrence (recurrence within 1 year after curative resection) were analyzed. Important CEUS characteristics were compared with the pathological findings. RESULTS: Tumor size and TNM stage were closely associated with early recurrence. Incomplete-enhancement and enhancement pattern III, IV and V at CEUS imaging were more prone to early recurrence. Incomplete-enhancement lesions had higher histological tumor grades, less frequent remaining acini, and more frequent necrosis within the tumor. PDACs with pattern I and II had lower histological tumor grades, and pattern III, IV and V had higher histological tumor grades. PDACs with pattern I, II and IV had less frequent intratumoral necrosis than PDACs with pattern III and V, and PDACs with pattern IV had lower MVD values. CONCLUSIONS: PDACs with incomplete enhancement and enhancement pattern III, IV and V were more prone to early recurrence after attempted curative resection, and these important CEUS characteristics were closely related to the pathological findings of PDAC.

China is one of the largest countries with endemic rabies. In this study, we examined the full-length genome sequences of 87 rabies virus (RABV) strains identified in China from 1931 to 2019. Chinese RABV isolates were divided into two major clades, GI and GII. Clade GI consisted of viruses from the Asian clade, which was further divided into three subclades: Asian1, Asian2, and Asian3. Clade GII consisted of viruses from the Cosmopolitan, Arctic-related, and Indian clades. A phylogeographic network showed that the variation of rabies virus was more closely associated with geographic location than with the host species. Recombination appears to be one of the factors driving the emergence of new viral strains.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis and treatment of fibro-adipose vascular anomaly (FAVA) of the limb remains challenging since this entity is rare and complex. This paper is aimed to describe the clinical and imaging features, staging and management of this underrecognized disease of the limb. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Patients diagnosed with FAVA and managed between September 2019 and May 2022 in department of pediatric surgery & vascular anomalies of Xi'an international medical center hospital were retrospectively reviewed. Data extracted include age at presentation, previous diagnosis, affected muscles, symptoms, previous treatment, our management, and follow-up. RESULTS: Thirty-two patients with FAVA were diagnosed and managed in our center. There was a female sex predominance, with 23 female (72%) and 9 male (28%) in the cohort. Only one lesion was noticed during infancy; the remaining presented at age 1 to 20 years (median, 7 years). The most commonly involved muscles were gastrocnemius (14/32, 44%) and soleus (13/32, 40%). Swelling (mass), pain and contractures were the most common presentations. MRI featured a heterogeneous and ill-defined intramuscular high signal intensity. Diseases were staged according to clinical features: stage I (pain stage, n = 4), stage II (contracture stage, n = 20) and stage III (deformity stage, n = 8). Patients with stage I disease underwent radical resection and obtained a cure. Patients with stage II disease received radical resection and possible Achilles lengthening, having an outcome of cure. Personalized treatment was required in patients with stage III disease, including radical/partial/staged resection, Achilles lengthening/tenotomy, joint capsulotomy, neurolysis/neurectomy, tendon transfer, stretching exercises, and oral sirolimus/alpelisib. Significant improvement of symptoms was achieved in most. CONCLUSION: The most distinct features of FAVA include enlarging mass, severe pain and contracture. Based on distinct clinical and radiologic features, it is not difficult to make the diagnosis of FAVA. Earlier awareness of this disease can reduce misdiagnoses. Surgery-based comprehensive management can typically improve pain and contracture. Oral sirolimus or alpelisib plays an important role in treatment of unresectable lesions and major nerve involvement. Surgery alone can be curative in early stage FAVA.

Objective: This retrospective cohort study is aimed to provide a certain reference for the clinical prevention and treatment of nasal bone fracture, and further formulated a more perfect diagnosis and treatment plan. Methods: In detailed cases, 2881 patients with nasal bone fracture were recorded. Its general clinical data, cause of injury, fracture site, and fracture typing were collected through the database. All hospitalized patients admitted to the Ninth People's Hospital Affiliated to the School of Medicine of Shanghai Jiao Tong University with integrated medical records could be retrospectively included from June 2013 to July 2018 and comprehensively analyzed for their gender, age, fracture type and cause of injury. Results: The sex ratio of nasal bone fracture was 2.44:1. The most patients with nasal bone fracture were 19-29 years old (35.6%). The injury rate of traffic accidents was the highest, 33.8%, followed by violent strikes, 24.1%. Statistical analysis showed that the number of patients with nasal bone combined with maxillary frontal bone fracture and type II nasal bone fracture was significantly higher than other fracture types. Logistic multiple regression analysis showed that the relative risk of nasal bone fracture in men was lower (odds ratio, OR = 0.807, P < .05), and the risk of nasal bone fracture decreased with age (OR = 0.978, P < .001). Compared with car accident injury, the relative risk of simple nasal bone fracture comes from violence, exercise or collision [OR = 1.244, P < .05; OR = 1.410, P < .05; OR = 1.453, P < .05]). Conclusion: Given these findings, it's evident that nasal bone fractures exhibit distinct patterns based on individual characteristics, causes of trauma, and injury site, and relevant strategy research should be conducted.

As a strong economic and populous province in China, Jiangsu is home to four endemic diseases. Despite efforts in the past decade, the prevention and control of these four endemic diseases are not uniform because of the different etiological chains and influencing factors of these diseases. Among the evaluation methodologies for endemic disease control, only one method is currently available for each disease. In this study, we selected 14 indicators to comprehensively evaluate the effectiveness of endemic disease control in Jiangsu between 2013 and 2022. We improved the method for calculating the weights of the indicators and established a fuzzy comprehensive evaluation model based on the weighted Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to an Ideal Solution model and a weighted grey relational analysis model. The results of the comprehensive evaluation showed that the progress of endemic disease control in Jiangsu was not always in line with our expectations of improvement, with the top five years of better control occurring in 2015, 2013, 2021, 2022, and 2014. The results of the sensitivity analysis confirm the reliability and accuracy of these findings. We discovered that measures such as the reform of the salt industry, use of thyroid ultrasound, and new water supply projects for residents in Jiangsu affected the progress of endemic disease prevention and control. The tracking of endemic disease status should consider the potential effects of changes in policies implemented in other industries on endemic disease prevention and control. Additionally, the results of this study provide a theoretical basis for enhancing prevention and control practices in other regions of China.

OBJECTIVE: Glypican-3 (GPC3) has emerged as a significant marker for the diagnosis and prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and has garnered considerable attention as an immunotherapeutic target. In this study, we propose a combination of preoperative contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) imaging features and clinical factors to predict the positive expression of GPC3 in HCC patients. METHODS: We retrospectively included 30 cases of GPC3-negative HCC and 115 cases of GPC3-positive HCC patients who underwent conventional ultrasound and CEUS evaluation. We assessed and compared the clinical characteristics, conventional ultrasound features, and CEUS features between the two groups of HCC patients. Based on the clinical and ultrasound features between the two groups, we developed a binary logistic regression model for predicting GPC3-positive HCC. RESULTS: A total of 145 HCC patients were included in this study. Binary logistic regression analysis showed that AFP > 20 ng/mL (OR = 4.047; 95% CI: 1.467-11.16; p = 0.007), arterial phase hyperenhancement (APHE) (OR = 12.557; 95% CI: 3.608-43.706; p < 0.001), and asynchronous perfusion (OR = 4.209; 95% CI: 1.206-14.691; p = 0.024) were predictive factors for GPC3-positive HCC. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was conducted to predict GPC3-positive expression. The model combining the three independent predictive factors showed good predictive performance (AUC 0.817, 95% CI: 0.731-0.902, sensitivity: 91.3%, specificity: 60.0%). This combined model demonstrated excellent discriminatory ability to predict GPC3-positive HCC. CONCLUSION: Preoperative integration of CEUS features and clinical factors can non-invasively and effectively identify GPC3-positive HCC patients, providing valuable assistance in making personalized treatment decisions.

Introduction: Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV) is a highly adaptable virus with large genetic diversity that has been widely studied for its oncolytic activities and potential as a vector vaccine. This study investigated the molecular characteristics of 517 complete NDV strains collected from 26 provinces across China between 1946-2020. Methods: Herein, phylogenetic, phylogeographic network, recombination, and amino acid variability analyses were performed to reveal the evolutionary characteristics of NDV in China. Results and discussions: Phylogenetic analysis revealed the existence of two major groups: GI, which comprises a single genotype Ib, and GII group encompassing eight genotypes (I, II, III, VI. VII. VIII, IX and XII). The Ib genotype is found to dominate China (34%), particularly South and East China, followed by VII (24%) and VI (22%). NDV strains from the two identified groups exhibited great dissimilarities at the nucleotide level of phosphoprotein (P), matrix protein (M), fusion protein (F), and haemagglutinin-neuraminidase (HN) genes. Consistently, the phylogeographic network analysis revealed two main Network Clusters linked to a possible ancestral node from Hunan (strain MH289846.1). Importantly, we identified 34 potential recombination events that involved mostly strains from VII and Ib genotypes. A recombinant of genotype XII isolated in 2019 seems to emerge newly in Southern China. Further, the vaccine strains are found to be highly involved in potential recombination. Therefore, since the influence of recombination on NDV virulence cannot be predicted, this report's findings need to be considered for the security of NDV oncolytic application and the safety of NDV live attenuated vaccines.

Transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV) is a porcine coronavirus that threatens animal health and remains elusive despite years of research efforts. The systematical analysis of all available full-length genomes of TGEVs (a total of 43) and porcine respiratory coronaviruses PRCVs (a total of 7) showed that TGEVs fell into two independent evolutionary phylogenetic clades, GI and GII. Viruses circulating in China (until 2021) clustered with the traditional or attenuated vaccine strains within the same evolutionary clades (GI). In contrast, viruses latterly isolated in the USA fell into GII clade. The viruses circulating in China have a lower similarity with that isolated latterly in the USA all through the viral genome. In addition, at least four potential genomic recombination events were identified, three of which occurred in GI clade and one in GII clade. TGEVs circulating in China are distinct from the viruses latterly isolated in the USA at either genomic nucleotide or antigenic levels. Genomic recombination serves as a factor driving the expansion of TGEV genomic diversity.

This study aimed to establish a surface modification technology for ZK60 magnesium alloy implants that can degrade uniformly over time and promote bone healing. It proposes a special micro-arc oxidation (MAO) treatment on ZK60 alloy that enables the composite electrolytes to create a coating with better corrosion resistance and solve the problems of uneven and excessive degradation. A magnesium alloy bone screw made in this way was able to promote the bone healing reaction after implantation in rabbits. Additionally, it was found that the MAO-treated samples could be sustained in simulated body-fluid solution, exhibiting excellent corrosion resistance and electrochemical stability. The Ca ions deposited in the MAO coating were not cytotoxic and were beneficial in enhancing bone healing after implantation.

Sustained spread and continuous evolution of CPV-2 generate new genetic information; nevertheless, there is no adopted phylogenetic tool, and parvo virologists still refer to the three antigenic variants. Herein, this report attempted to review the evolutionary trait of CPV-2 and proposed standard reference genomes using the Maximum Likelihood-based phylogenetic analysis and Parsimony-Informative Sites. The analysis revealed three main evolutionary pathways where CPV-2 strains cluster into distinct clades depicted as GI, GII, or GIII, respectively. Furthermore, novel CPV-2 natural recombinants were detected, occurring only between the newly identified strains (2017-2020). Those findings provide unique insights into the evolutionary relatedness of CPV-2, clarify discrepancies between different geographic areas and will contribute to achieving a more reliable CPV-2 genetic and evolutionary genotyping classification.

The emergence and rapid spread of the acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 have confirmed that animal coronaviruses represent a potential zoonotic source. Porcine deltacoronavirus is a worldwide evolving enteropathogen of swine, detected first in Hong Kong, China, before its global identification. Following the recent detection of PDCoV in humans, we attempted in this report to re-examine the status of PDCoV phylogenetic classification and evolutionary characteristics. A dataset of 166 complete PDCoV genomes was analyzed using the Maximum Likelihood method in IQ-TREE with the best-fitting model GTR + F + I + G4, revealing two major genogroups (GI and GII), with further seven and two sub-genogroups, (GI a-g) and (GII a-b), respectively. PDCoV strains collected in China exhibited the broadest genetic diversity, distributed in all subgenotypes. Thirty-one potential natural recombination events were identified, 19 of which occurred between China strains, and seven involved at least one China strain as a parental sequence. Importantly, we identified a human Haiti PDCoV strain as recombinant, alarming a possible future spillover that could become a critical threat to human health. The similarity and recombination analysis showed that PDCoV spike ORF is highly variable compared to ORFs encoding other structural proteins. Prediction of linear B cell epitopes of the spike glycoprotein and the 3D structural mapping of amino acid variations of two representative strains of GI and GII showed that the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of spike glycoprotein underwent a significant antigenic drift, suggesting its contribution in the genetic diversity and the wider spread of PDCoV.

The classical swine fever virus (CSFV) outbreaks cause colossal losses of pigs and drastic economic impacts. The current phylogenetic CSFV groups were determined mainly based on the partial genome. Herein, 203 complete genomic sequences of CSFVs collected worldwide between 1998 and 2018 available on the GenBank database were retrieved for re-genotyping and recombination analysis. The maximum likelihood phylogenetic tree determined two main groups, GI and GII, with multiple sub-genotypes. The "strain 39" (GenBank ID: AF407339), previously identified as belonging to sub-genotypes 1.1 or 2.2 based on the partial sequences, is found to be genetically distinct and independent, forming a new lineage depicted as GI-2.2b. Ten potential natural recombination events were identified, seven of which were collected in China and found involved in the genetic diversity of CSFVs. Importantly, the vaccine strains and highly virulent strains were all involved in the recombination events, which would induce extra challenges to vaccine development. These findings alarm that attenuated vaccines should be applied with discretion and recommend using subunit vaccines in parallel with other preventive strategies for better management of CSFVs.

Objective:To evaluate the efficacy of 3D printed nasal vestibular support on the recovery of nasal ventilation function and nostril shape after nostril stenosis treatment. Methods:Thirty-eight patients with unilateral traumatic nasal vestibular stenosis were selected and treated with 3D printed nasal vestibular support after operation. Subjective evaluation indicators, objective nostril local morphological and structural parameters, and nasal airflow dynamics parameters by numerical simulation were used. To evaluate the nostril morphological and nasal functional recovery after treatment. Results:The subjective nasal congestion and nostril symmetry satisfaction VAS scores of the patients after nasal vestibular support treatment were improved to varying degrees compared with those before surgery; The nostril morphological parameters showed that the Δlong-axis ratio and Δ î€Œshort-axis ratio were significantly decreased after nasal vestibular support therapy (0.09±0.09 and 0.16±0.13) compared with those before surgery(0.21±0.20 and 0.28±0.21) respectively(P<0.01). And the cross-sectional area of the nasal valve on the stenotic side nasal cavity increased from(0.40±0.27) cm² before operation to (0.71±0.26) cm² after treatment(P<0.01); The nasal resistance on the stenosis side nasal cavity also decreased from (0.036±0.024) Pa·s/mL before operation to (0.022±0.008) Pa. s/mL after treatment(P<0.01), and the total nasal resistance was decreased from (0.033±0.02) Pas/mL before operation to (0.021±0.007)Pa. s/mL after treatment(P<0.01) ; It also showed that NWE(nasal warming efficiency) and NHE(nasal humidification efficiency) on the stenotic side nasal cavity were significantly decreased after nasal vestibular support therapy([95.92±2.8]% and [94.55±4.17]%) compared with those before surgery ([97.94±1.97 ]% and [96.19±2.94]%) respectively(P<0.01). Conclusion:The 3D printed nasal vestibular support for postoperative support treatment on patients with anterior nostril stenosis can reflect the advantages of personalized treatment and allow patients to obtain satisfactory results, and the use of individually designed 3D printed nasal vestibular support can make the shape of anterior nostrils and nasal cavity normal ventilation function recover well, its clinical application prospect is worth looking forward to.

Rare skin diseases include more than 800 diseases affecting more than 6.8 million patients worldwide. However, only 100 drugs have been developed for treating rare skin diseases in the past 38 years. To investigate potential treatments through drug repurposing for rare skin diseases, it is necessary to have a well-organized database to link all known disease causes, mechanisms, and related information to accelerate the process. Drug repurposing provides less expensive and faster potential options to develop treatments for known diseases. In this work, we designed and constructed a rare skin disease database (RSDB) as a disease-centered information depository to facilitate repurposing drug candidates for rare skin diseases. We collected and integrated associated genes, chemicals, and phenotypes into a network connected by pairwise relationships between different components for rare skin diseases. The RSDB covers 891 rare skin diseases defined by the Orphanet and GARD databases. The organized network for each rare skin disease comprises associated genes, phenotypes, and chemicals with the corresponding connections. The RSDB is available at https://rsdb.cmdm.tw .

2, 3-dimethyl maleic acid (DMMA) was found to enhance luminol-H2O2 chemiluminescent (CL) reactions, among which the strongest enhancement effect was observed by using polyethyleneimine-templated gold nanoclusters (PEI-Au NCs) as the catalyst. With the addition of DMMA, the CL signal of the PEI-Au NCs-catalyzed luminol-H2O2 reaction enhanced about 630-fold, and a flash-type CL profile was obtained. Mechanism studies showed that the luminophore was still 3-aminophthalate anions in the excited state (3-APA*), and superoxide radical (O2·-) played an important role during the CL process. Under the optimized experimental conditions, the lowest concentration of PEI-Au NCs can be detected was 0.168 nM which was 82-fold lower than that without an enhancer. Furthermore, the catalytic activity of biotinylated PEI-Au NCs in the DMMA-enhanced luminol system was similar to PEI-Au NCs, providing a good opportunity for the development of CL bioanalysis platforms using PEI-Au NCs as the label. Thus, the DMMA-enhanced luminol-H2O2 system was applied to the CL detection of sequence-specific DNA related to the hepatitis B virus (HBV) using PEI-Au NCs as the label. The CL platform exhibited linearly enhanced CL response with the increasing amount of target DNA ranging from 0.0025 to 0.5 pmol. As low as 0.002 pmol of HBV DNA could be sensitively detected, which was superior to the previously reported methods.

Discrepancies in human hepatitis delta virus (HDV) genotypes impact the virus' biological behavior, clinical manifestation, and treatment response. Herein, this report aims to explore the role of recombination in the worldwide genotypic distribution and genetic diversity of HDV. Three-hundred-forty-eight human HDV full-length genomic sequences of ~1678 nt in length, isolated in twenty-eight countries worldwide between 1986 and 2018, were analysed. Similarity analysis and recombination mapping were performed, and forty-eight recombination events were identified, twenty-nine of which were isolated from Kyrgyzstan and determined to be involved in the diversity and extension of HDV sub-genotypes. HDV recombination occurred only between the genetically close genotypes (genotype 5 and genotype 2) or mainly within genotype 1, suggesting the complex replicative molecular mechanisms of HDV-RNA. The global distribution and classification of HDV genotypes have been updated, indicating that HDV recombination is one of the driving forces behind the biodiversity and the evolution of human HDV genomes. The outcome analysis suggests that the expansion of HDV sub-genotypes and the complex recombination networks might be related to the genomic character of Kyrgyzstan circulating strains and extensive mobility within countries and across borders. These findings will be of great importance in formulating more effective public health HDV surveillance strategies and guiding future molecular and epidemiological research to achieve better clinical outcomes.

Oxytetracycline-capped gold nanoparticles (OTC-Au NPs) were prepared using sodium borohydride as the reductant and OTC as the capping agent, respectively. The prepared OTC-Au NPs with a size of 6 nm have a maximum surface plasma resonance (SPR) absorption located at 514 nm. The OTC on the surface of Au NPs still can coordinate with Eu3+ ions. Due to the property that OTC has multivalent binding sites with Eu3+ ions, Eu3+ ions can induce the aggregation of OTC-Au NPs. Based on the Eu3+ ions-aggregated OTC-Au NPs, a simple aptamer-free colorimetric sensing method for TCs was developed. Briefly, free TCs compete with OTC on the surface of Au NPs resulting in the change of OTC-Au NPs from an aggregation state to a dispersed state. The whole process takes only 5 min, and as low as 20 nM OTC, 14 nM tetracycline (TC), and 20 nM doxycycline (DC) could be sensitively detected, respectively. The proposed method was also featured as good repeatability and specificity, and was applied to the detection of OTC in lake water with satisfactory recovery.

Zoonotic hepatitis E, mainly caused by swine hepatitis E virus (sHEV), is endemic in China, causing great economic disruption and public health threats. Although recombination is critical for the evolution of viruses, there is a limited assessment of its occurrence among sHEVs. Herein, we analysed all available sHEV full-length genomes isolated in China during the past two decades (40 isolates) compared to 72 other sHEV strains isolated in different countries and determined that sHEV genotype 4 (sHEV4) dominates China. Eight potential natural recombination events were identified, four of which occurred in China and were mainly between sHEV4 strains, indicating the distinct character of China sHEV. One intergenotype recombination event was found in China, alarming the emergence of a new sHEV lineage that could become a critical threat to human health.

The invasion ecology principles illustrated in many ecosystems have not yet been explored in the context of fomite transmission. We hypothesized that invaders in fomite transmission are trackable, are neutrally distributed between hands and environmental surfaces, and exhibit a proximity effect. To test this hypothesis, a surrogate invader, Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus, was spread by a root carrier in an office housing more than 20 participants undertaking normal activities, and the microbiotas on skin and environmental surfaces were analyzed before and after invasion. First, we found that the invader was trackable. Its identity and emission source could be determined using microbial-interaction networks, and the root carrier could be identified using a rank analysis. Without prior information, L. bulgaricus could be identified as the invader emitted from a source that exclusively contained the invader, and the probable root carrier could be located. In addition to the single-taxon invasion by L. bulgaricus, multiple-taxon invasion was observed, as genera from sputum/saliva exhibited co-occurrence relationships on skin and environmental surfaces. Second, the invader had a below-neutral distribution in a neutral community model, suggesting that hands accrued heavier invader contamination than environmental surfaces. Third, a proximity effect was observed on a surface touch network. Invader contamination on surfaces decreased with increasing geodesic distance from the hands of the carrier, indicating that the carrier's touching behaviors were the main driver of fomite transmission. Taken together, these results demonstrate the invasion ecology principles in fomite transmission and provide a general basis for the management of ecological fomite transmission. IMPORTANCE Fomite transmission contributes to the spread of many infectious diseases. However, pathogens in fomite transmission typically are either investigated individually without considering the context of native microbiotas or investigated in a nondiscriminatory way from the dispersal of microbiotas. In this study, we adopted an invasion ecology framework in which we considered pathogens as invaders, the surface environment as an ecosystem, and human behaviors as the driver of microbial dispersal. With this approach, we assessed the ability of quantitative ecological theories to track and forecast pathogen movements in fomite transmission. By uncovering the relationships between the invader and native microbiotas and between human behaviors and invader/microbiota dispersal, we demonstrated that fomite transmission follows idiosyncratic invasion ecology principles. Our findings suggest that attempts to manage fomite transmission for public health purposes should focus on the microbial communities and anthropogenic factors involved, in addition to the pathogens.
