RESUMEN
In this study, we applied a multivariate logistic regression model to identify deforested areas and evaluate the current effects on environmental variables in the Brazilian state of Rondônia, located in the southwestern Amazon region using data from the MODIS/Terra sensor. The variables albedo, temperature, evapotranspiration, vegetation index, and gross primary productivity were analyzed from 2000 to 2022, with surface type data from the PRODES project as the dependent variable. The accuracy of the models was evaluated by the parameters area under the curve (AUC), pseudo R2, and Akaike information criterion, in addition to statistical tests. The results indicated that deforested areas had higher albedo (25%) and higher surface temperatures (3.2 °C) compared to forested areas. There was a significant reduction of the EVI (16%), indicating water stress, and a decrease in GPP (18%) and ETr (23%) due to the loss of plant biomass. The most precise model (91.6%) included only surface temperature and albedo, providing important information about the environmental impacts of deforestation in humid tropical regions.

This article evaluates four statistical methods of multiple imputation to fill in the missing data of daily precipitation in Northeast Brazil (NEB). We used a daily database collected by 94 rain gauges distributed in NEB from January 1, 1986 to December 31, 2015. The methods were: random sampling from the observed values; predictive mean matching, Bayesian linear regression; and bootstrap expectation maximization algorithm (BootEm). To compare these methods, missing data from the original series were initially excluded. The next step was to create three scenarios for each method, in which 10\%, 20\% and 30\% of the data were removed at random. The BootEM method presented the best statistical results. With the average bias between the complete series and the imputed series values ranging between -0.91 and 1.30 mm/day. The values of the Pearson correlation ranging between 0.96, 0.91 and 0.86 respectively for 10\%, 20\% and 30\% missing data. We conclude that this is an adequate method for the reconstruction of historical precipitation data in NEB.

The Cerrado encompasses a complex network of hydrographic basins, which is responsible for the formation and maintenance of the riparian and gallery forests. Alterations in the vegetation resulting from the paleoclimatic changes that occurred during the Pleistocene influenced the current distribution of these humid forests. To understand of the evolutionary dynamics of this landscape on the population structure of the associated organisms, we studied the population genetics of the Antilophia galeata (Pipridae), a bird endemic to the gallery forests of the Cerrado. For this, we evaluated the variability of the mitochondrial control region of 71 A. galeata specimens from 18 localities distributed throughout the Cerrado. The results indicated the existence of significant substructure among the populations located in the peripheral areas of the Cerrado, in comparison with the populations found in the central portion, reflecting historical changes in the environment. We also found high levels of diversity in all the populations, while the analysis of the demographic history revealed a scenario of stability. Overall, then, these findings indicate that the historical modifications of the gallery forest distribution may have been most accentuated in the peripheral zones, with a greater stability and connectivity persisting in the central portion of the biome.

The release of water from the reservoir hypolimnion, lower concentration of oxygen and the anthropogenic regulation of the river flow, could affect the reproduction of fish, especially migratory species. However, little is known about the effects of these changes in water on non-migratory species. In this sense, the reproduction of Acestrohynchus lacustris was evaluated in two sections of São Francisco River, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Section 1, located immediately downstream from Três Marias Dam (18°09'31.65"S and 45°13'36.00"W) and section 2, located at the confluence of the São Francisco and the Abaeté Rivers (18°02'47.78"S and 45°1057.95"W). For this, we obtained the physico-chemical parameters of water of each study section. Additionally, biometric data and biological indices ofall specimens were measured. Fecundity and follicles diameters were measured in females. Temperature, dissolvedoxygen and flow showed lower values in section 1. Fish captured in this section, had lower values of GSI in bothsexes, and females presented decreased values of fecundity and follicles diameter. This species showed reproductiveactivity in the two sections analyzed, however, in section 1 where the temperature and dissolved oxygen presentedsignificant lower values, the reproductive capacity of A. lacustris, was negatively affected.(AU)

Forest ecosystems sequester large amounts of atmospheric CO2, and the contribution from seasonally dry tropical forests is not negligible. Thus, the objective of this study was to quantify and evaluate the seasonal and annual patterns of CO2 exchanges in the Caatinga biome, as well as to evaluate the ecosystem condition as carbon sink or source during years. In addition, we analyzed the climatic factors that control the seasonal variability of gross primary production (GPP), ecosystem respiration (Reco) and net ecosystem CO2 exchange (NEE). Results showed that the dynamics of the components of the CO2 fluxes varied depending on the magnitude and distribution of rainfall and, as a consequence, on the variability of the vegetation state. Annual cumulative NEE was significantly higher (p < 0.01) in 2014 (-169.0 g C m-2) when compared to 2015 (-145.0 g C m-2) and annual NEP/GPP ratio was 0.41 in 2014 and 0.43 in 2015. Global radiation, air and soil temperature were the main factors associated with the diurnal variability of carbon fluxes. Even during the dry season, the NEE was at equilibrium and the Caatinga acted as an atmospheric carbon sink during the years 2014 and 2015.

RESUMEN
BACKGROUND: Neuronal signaling has been implicated in the pathophysiology of multiple malignancies. In biliary tract cancers (BTCs), tumor cell expression of nerve growth factor (NGF) and its receptor neurotrophic tropomyosin receptor kinase (NTRK) has been reported in Asian patients and linked to inferior clinical outcome. Furthermore, NTRK fusions have emerged as a promising target in various cancers. Expression patterns of these markers in Caucasian patients remain unknown. METHODS: In this study, 106 patients with BTCs were included. Immunohistochemistry for pan-NTRK and NGF-beta was performed on > 90 samples of this cohort. Additionally, samples from two independent cohorts, incorporating 254 cases, were used to confirm the findings of the original cohort. RESULTS: While expression of pan-NTRK and NGF-beta was readily detectable in peri-tumoral nerves, these markers were not detectable in malignant epithelial cells in our cohort. CONCLUSIONS: In a large cohort of Caucasian patients with BTC, NTRK and NGF-beta were not detectable, underscoring potential differences between Caucasian and Asian patient populations.

The melanocortin-1 receptor gene is the most widely-used marker for the investigation of the genetic determination of melanic plumage patterns. Studies of a number of wild bird species have shown an association between non-synonymous mutations of the MC1R gene and the presence of melanic variants. The genus Antilophia (Pipridae) includes only two manakin species (A. galeata and A. bokermanni), which are distinguished primarily by the differences in the pattern of melanic coloration of the plumage of the mantle in the adult males. In A. galeata, this plumage is black, while in A. bokermanni, it is predominantly white. This study investigates the possible association between mutations of the MC1R marker and the variation in plumage coloration observed in the two species. The MC1R sequences of the two species was analyzed, and the observed nucleotide variation was compared. Six polymorphic sites were identified, representing seven distinct genotypes. Five of these polymorphic mutations were non-synonymous, but were not related to the different phenotypes. Neutral evolution and the absence of any systematic association between the variants of the MC1R and plumage coloration in the Antilophia species indicate that alternative mechanisms regulate the expression of the coloration of the plumage in the adult males.

Establishing links between phenotypic and genotypic variation is a central goal of evolutionary biology, as they might provide important insights into evolutionary processes shaping genetic and species diversity in nature. One of the more intriguing possibilities is when no genetic divergence is found to be associated with conspicuous phenotypic divergence. In that case, speciation theory predicts that phenotypic divergence may still occur in the presence of significant gene flow-thereby resulting in little genomic divergence-when genetic loci underpinning phenotypes are under strong divergent selection. However, a finding of phenotypic distinctiveness with weak or no population genetic structure may simply result from low statistical power to detect shallow genetic divergences when small data sets are used. Here, we used a subgenomic data set of 2,386 ultraconserved elements to explore genomewide divergence between two species of Antilophia manakins, which are phenotypically distinct yet evidently lack strong genetic differentiation according to previous studies based on a limited number of loci. Our results revealed clear population structure that matches the two phenotypes, supporting the idea that smaller data sets lacked the power to detect this recent divergence event (likely <100 k ya). Indeed, we found little or no introgression between the species, as well as evidence of genomewide divergence. One implication of our study is that the Araripe plateau may be a hot spot of cryptic-diverging forest Cerrado populations. Besides their use in biogeography, subgenomic data sets may help redefine local conservation programmes by revealing cryptic population structure that may be key to population management.

Therefore, the goals of this study were (i) to evaluate the seasonal effect on semen production in a commercial boar stud farm located in a subtropical climate region and (ii) to verify whether the activities of superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase in spermatozoa and seminal plasma were associated with seminal traits of fresh and cooled semen. Nine boars were collected twice per season, and routine seminal parameter analyses were performed together with superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activities in seminal plasma and spermatozoa. Despite a reduction in sperm concentration in spring and summer, most seminal parameters were constant year-round. Temperature-humidity index was higher in the summer compared to spring, autumn and winter (p < .05). Superoxide dismutase activity in spermatozoa was increased in summer compared to autumn and winter (p < .05). The activities of both enzymes in seminal plasma and spermatozoa glutathione peroxidase remained unaltered throughout the seasons. In conclusion, seasonality showed little influence in overall boar seminal parameters despite microclimatic differences among seasons, and spermatozoa collected during summer increased superoxide dismutase activity.
RESUMEN
Abstract The essential oil (EO) composition of leaves of Campomanesia aurea was analyzed by GC-MS. The plant was collected in April (EOA) and October (EOO) in São Francisco de Assis/RS. The essential oils were obtained by hydrodistillation in a modified Clevenger apparatus. The yields were 4.44% in April, and 6.15%, in October. Thirty-one compounds were identified in EOA, accounting for 96.87% of the total, and twenty-eight compounds were identified in EOO, accounting for 99.46% of the total. For EOA, the major identified monoterpene was p-cymene (8.33%) and the major identified sesquiterpene was -cadinol (10.72%), while regarding EOO the major identified monoterpene was repeatedly Terpinolene (3.43%), whereas the major identified sesquiterpene was -cadinol (12.79%). The antibacterial activity of the essential oil was evaluated against the three Listeria monocytogenes from the American Type Culture Collection (strains ATCC 7644, 19114 and 13932). The essential oil showed a MIC of 10 mg/mL against the strains ATCC 7644 and 19114, with bacteriostatic effect of 20 mg/mL and a MIC of 20 mg/mL for ATCC 13932. Regarding the antibiofilm activity, o EOO showed the best results with an inhibition of 90% in the sessile growth with an applied concentration of 4.0 mg/mL.

To investigate the influence of post length and amount of remaining root tissue on the fracture resistance of roots restored with fibre posts relined with resin composite. Ninety upper canine teeth were divided into nine groups (n = 10). The post spaces were prepared resulting in different lengths, as follows: group 2/3, preparations with lengths of 10 mm; group 1/2, preparations with lengths of 7·5 mm; and group 1/3, preparations with lengths of 5 mm. Each group was divided into 3 subgroups according to amount of remaining root tooth tissue (2, 1 mm or 0·5 mm of thick root). Fibre posts relined with resin composite were cemented, and all teeth were restored with metal crowns. The samples were submitted to the fracture resistance test in a universal testing machine, at an angle of 135° and speed of 0·5 mm min(-1) . Failure modes were observed and the data of fracture resistance were submitted to the anova and Tukey's (α = 0·05). No statistically significant difference in fracture resistance was found among different post lengths (P > 0·05). Remaining dentin thickness of 2 and 1 mm did not differ statistically in fracture resistance (P > 0·05), which was higher than of 0·5 mm dentin thickness (P < 0·05). A prevalence of repairable failure was observed in all groups. It can be concluded that the length of fibre post relined with resin composite did not influence fracture resistance, but thickness was an important factor for the restoration of endodontically treated teeth.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Although cement-retained implant prostheses are widely used, the quantification of optimal retention remains controversial, and new dental luting agents should be evaluated. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare, in vitro, the casting retention on implant abutments after cementation with 3 commercially available luting agents and an experimental luting agent (castor oil polyurethane, COP) with variable weight percentages (wt%) of calcium carbonate (CaCO3). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Seventy-two palladium-silver cast copings were fabricated and divided into 6 groups: Temp Bond interim cement (TB); zinc phosphate cement (ZP); Rely X ARC resin cement (RX); pure COP (COP); COP + 10% wt% CaCO3 filler (COP 10); and COP + 50% wt% CaCO3 filler (COP 50). After cementation, the specimens were stored in distilled water at 37°C for 24 hours and subjected to removal force tests in a universal testing machine (5 kN; 0.5 mm/min). Statistical analyses were performed with the Kruskal-Wallis and Student-Newman-Keuls tests (α=.05). RESULTS: The median values of casting retention (N) were as follows: TB=57.20 ±10.4; ZP=343.56 ±50.3; RX=40.07 ±9.7; COP=258.98 ±41.4; COP 10=466.57 ±79.3; and COP 50=209.63 ±31.4. The Kruskal-Wallis test showed significant differences among the groups (P<.01). TB and RX had the lowest mean retention values; COP, COP 10, and COP 50 were equal to ZP, and COP 10 had the highest retention. CONCLUSIONS: The casting retention on implant-abutments provided by COP was similar to that of copings cemented with zinc phosphate and may be influenced by the addition of calcium carbonate.
