RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: The outbreak of contagious diseases and their associated non-pharmaceutical interventions can lead to negative mental health consequences. This study aimed to investigate online self-compassion exercises' effectiveness in alleviating people's negative affect (anxiety and negative emotions) during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. METHODS: Study 1 examined the associations between self-compassion and negative affect using an anonymous online survey. In study 2, two pilot experiments were conducted to examine online self-compassion exercises' (i.e., instructor-guided meditation and self-guided writing) effectiveness to mitigate individuals' negative affect. In study 3, a randomized controlled study was conducted to further examine online self-compassion writing's effectiveness in reducing people's negative affect. RESULTS: The results of study 1 indicated a significant negative association between self-compassion and participants' negative affect. Participants in study 2a reported significant decreases in negative affect after completing the self-compassion meditation. Study 2b showed that participants who completed the self-compassion writing reported significantly more self-compassion and less anxiety when compared to participants who did not. Study 3 showed substantial pre/post-test changes in participants who completed self-compassion writing. Importantly, there were significant increases in participants' self-compassion and decreases in negative affect when compared to participants in the control condition. CONCLUSIONS: Self-compassion exercises were effective to alleviate individuals' anxiety and reduce negative emotions (even within a brief session) during the pandemic lockdown. RESUMEN

The treatment of environmental pollutants such as synthetic dyes and lignin has received much attention, especially for biotechnological treatments using both native and artificial metalloenzymes. In this study, we designed and engineered an efficient peroxidase using the O2 carrier myoglobin (Mb) as a protein scaffold by four mutations (F43Y/T67R/P88W/F138W), which combines the key structural features of natural peroxidases such as the presence of a conserved His-Arg pair and Tyr/Trp residues close to the heme active center. Kinetic studies revealed that the quadruple mutant exhibits considerably enhanced peroxidase activity, with the catalytic efficiency (kcat/Km) comparable to that of the most efficient natural enzyme, horseradish peroxidase (HRP). Moreover, the designed enzyme can effectively decolorize a variety of synthetic organic dyes and catalyze the bioconversion of lignin, such as Kraft lignin and a model compound, guaiacylglycerol-ß-guaiacyl ether (GGE). As analyzed by HPLC and ESI-MS, we identified several bioconversion products of GGE, as produced via bond cleavage followed by dimerization or trimerization, which illustrates the mechanism for lignin bioconversion. This study indicates that the designed enzyme could be exploited for the decolorization of textile wastewater contaminated with various dyes, as well as for the bioconversion of lignin to produce more value-added products.

Organic-inorganic antibacterial materials chitosan@silver/sepiolite (CTs@Ag/Sep) was prepared by grafting organometallic chelate of chitosan and silver on sepiolite. The prepared samples were characterized, and their antibacterial properties were detected. The carrier sepiolite was beneficial for the thermal stability of the composite material. The utilization of silver was enhanced and its amount of usage could be obviously reduced by introduction of nontoxic chitosan which was benefical for the formation of highly dispersed silver nanoparticles on the CTs@Ag/Sep by the interaction between the silver ion and the plentiful amino and hydroxyl groups on the chitosan, thus improved the antibacterial activities and stability. The average width of the inhibition zone of CTs@Ag/Sep against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Aspergillus niger were 51.8, 31.8, and 44.7 mm, respectively. The cytotoxicity of CTs@Ag/Sep was further evaluated with A549 cells, and the results indicated that it exhibited low cytotoxicity to eukaryotic cells.

Understanding the structure-reactivity relationship at the atomic scale is of great theoretical importance for rational design of highly active catalysts, which has long been a central concern in catalysis communities and interface science. Herein, we developed a high-efficiency catalyst for catalytic oxidation of C6H12 by poststructural decoration on well-defined single-crystal facets of hematite. Especially for Cl-decorated {012} facets, the conversion and KA oil selectivity are improved about 3.4 times and 2 times, respectively. A better catalytic performance of the newly formed active site is derived from the charge difference between Cl and the neighboring outmost O atoms, which is affected by the geometric and electronic structures of the original catalyst surface. Based on the experimental results and the theoretical analysis, we concluded that the contribution of various O terminations to Cl-decoration follows the order O(I) > O(III) > O(II). Cl-decorated {001} facets show the highest intrinsic activity, whereas Cl-decorated {012} facets show the best catalytic performance because of their more active sites for Cl-decoration.

OBJECTIVE: In China, the rapid socioeconomic transition and the consequential traditional culture change had significant influences on Chinese older-adult depression. In the present study, the prevalence, the potential risk, and the protective factors of depression in the Chinese older population were investigated. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with a nationwide representative Chinese sample of 4945 older adults; the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) was used as the measurement tool for depressive symptoms. Demographic and other self-reported related factors were taken into consideration. RESULTS: The prevalence of self-reported depressive symptoms (CES-D ≥ 16) in the total study population was 39.86% (pre-old: 39.95%, young-old: 39.84%, old-old: 39.65%, oldest-old: 45.19%); CES-D score was significantly higher in the oldest-old group than in the three younger groups. Furthermore, multiple regression analysis indicated that age itself was not an effective predictor for depressive symptoms, whereas family support and health status explained most of the variation. CONCLUSIONS: The present study found a higher prevalence of depression in the Chinese older population compared with those reported two decades ago. Family support and health status were the most significant protective factors for depression in Chinese older adults. Traditional Chinese culture, which values family significantly and contributed to the previously reported lower prevalence rate, changed dramatically, which may explain the current higher prevalence. In addition to the deterioration of family support, the worsening of health status is another significant factor.
