While spatial and time-resolved anti-counterfeiting technologies have gained increasing attention owing to their excellent tunable photoluminescence, achieving high-security-level anti-counterfeiting remains a challenge. Herein, we developed a spatial-time-dual-resolved anti-counterfeiting system using zero-dimensional (0D) organic-inorganic Mn(II) metal halides: (EMMZ)2MnBr4 (named M-1, EMMZ=1-Ethyl-3-Methylimidazolium Bromide) and (EDMMZ)2MnBr4 (named M-2, EDMMZ=1-Ethyl-2,3-Dimethylimidazolium Bromide). M-1 shows a bright green emission with a quantum yield of 78 %. It undergoes a phase transformation from the crystalline to molten state with phosphorescence quenching at 350 K. Reversible phase and luminescent conversion was observed after cooling down for 15 s. Notably, M-2 exhibits green light emission similar to M-1 but undergoes phase conversion and phosphorescence quenching at 390 K, with reversible conversion observed after cooling down for 5 s. The photoluminescence switching mode of on(green)-off-on(green) can be achieved by temperature control, demonstrating excellent performance with short response times and ultra-high cyclic reversibility. By leveraging the different quenching temperatures and reversible PL conversion times of M-1 and M-2, we propose a spatial-time-dual-resolved photoluminescence (PL) switching system that combines M-1 and M-2. This system enables multi-fold tuning of the PL switch for encryption and decryption through cationic engineering strategies by modulating temperature and cooling time. This work presents a novel and feasible design strategy for advanced-level anti-counterfeiting technology based on a spatial-time-dual-resolved system.

The urban environmental effects can have multifaceted impacts on the orchard soil microbial community structure and function. To specifically study these effects, we investigated the soil bacterial and fungal community in the laxly managed citrus orchards using amplicon sequencing. Ascomycota demonstrated significant dominance within the citrus orchard soils. The increased presence of beneficial Trichoderma spp. (0.3%) could help suppress plant pathogens, while the elevated abundance of potential pathogenic fungi, such as Fusarium spp. (0.4%), might raise the likelihood of disorders like root rot, thereby hindering plant growth and resulting in reduced yield. Moreover, we observed significant differences in the alpha and beta diversity of bacterial communities between urban and rural soils (p < 0.001). Environmental surveys and functional prediction of bacterial communities suggested that urban transportation factors and rural waste pollution were likely contributing to these disparities. When comparing bacterial species in urban and rural soils, Bacillus spp. exhibited notable increases in urban areas. Bacillus spp. possess heavy metal tolerance attributed to the presence of chromium reductase and nitroreductase enzymes involved in the chromium (VI) reduction pathway. Our findings have shed light on the intricate interplay of urban environmental effects and root systems, both of which exert influence on the soil microbiota. Apart from the removal of specific pollutants, the application of Bacillus spp. to alleviate traffic pollution, and the use of Trichoderma spp. for plant pathogen suppression were considered viable solutions. The knowledge acquired from this study can be employed to optimize agricultural practices, augment citrus productivity, and foster sustainable agriculture.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a significant cause of acute lower respiratory tract infections, particularly in vulnerable populations such as neonates, infants, young children, and the elderly. Among infants, RSV is the primary cause of bronchiolitis and pneumonia, contributing to a notable proportion of child mortality under the age of 5. In this study, we focused on investigating the pathogenicity of a lethal RSV strain, GZ08-18, as a model for understanding mechanisms of hypervirulent RSV. Our findings indicate that the heightened pathogenicity of GZ08-18 stems from compromised activation of intrinsic apoptosis, as evidenced by aberration of mitochondrial membrane depolarization in host cells. We thus hypothesized that enhancing intrinsic apoptosis could potentially attenuate the virulence of RSV strains and explored the effects of Rotenone, a natural compound known to stimulate the intrinsic apoptosis pathway, on inhibiting RSV infection. Our results demonstrate that Rotenone treatment significantly improved mouse survival rates and mitigated lung pathology following GZ08-18 infection. These findings suggest that modulating the suppressed apoptosis induced by RSV infection represents a promising avenue for antiviral intervention strategies.

Objective: This study aimed to find out whether phenotypic age could mediate the protective effects of a healthy lifestyle on mortality. Methods: We included adult participants with available data for individual phenotypic age (PhenoAge) and Life's Essential 8 (LE8) scores from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2005-2010 (three cycles) and linked mortality records until 31 December 2019. Adjusted hazard ratios (HR) were estimated to evaluate the associations of PhenoAge and LE8 scores with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality risk. Mediation analyses were performed to estimate the proportional contribution of PhenoAge to the effect of LE8 on mortality risks. Results: A 1-year increment in PhenoAge was associated with a higher risk of all-cause (HR = 1.04 [95% confidence interval, 1.04-1.05]) and cardiovascular (HR = 1.04 [95% confidence interval, 1.04-1.05]) mortality, independent of chronological age, demographic characteristics, and disease history. High level of LE8 (score: 80-100) was associated with a 3.30-year younger PhenoAge. PhenoAge was estimated to mediate 36 and 22% of the effect of LE8 on all-cause and cardiovascular mortality, respectively (all P < 0.001). As for single-metric scores of LE8, PhenoAge mediated 30%, 11%, 9%, and 7% of the effects of the healthy diet, smoking status, blood pressure, and physical activity on all-cause mortality risk, respectively (all P < 0.05). Conclusion: Adherence to LE8 recommendations slows phenotypic aging. PhenoAge could mediate the effect of LE8 on mortality risk.

Hypothyroidism is a known adverse event associated with the use of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in cancer treatment. This study aimed to develop an interpretable machine learning (ML) model for individualized prediction of hypothyroidism in patients treated with ICIs. The retrospective cohort of patients treated with ICIs was from the First Affiliated Hospital of Ningbo University. ML methods applied include logistic regression (LR), random forest classifier (RFC), support vector machine (SVM), and extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost). The area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve (AUC) was the main evaluation metric used. Furthermore, the Shapley additive explanation (SHAP) was utilized to interpret the outcomes of the prediction model. A total of 458 patients were included in the study, with 59 patients (12.88%) observed to have developed hypothyroidism. Among the models utilized, XGBoost exhibited the highest predictive capability (AUC = 0.833). The Delong test and calibration curve indicated that XGBoost significantly outperformed the other models in prediction. The SHAP method revealed that thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) was the most influential predictor variable. The developed interpretable ML model holds potential for predicting the likelihood of hypothyroidism following ICI treatment in patients. ML technology offers new possibilities for predicting ICI-induced hypothyroidism, potentially providing more precise support for personalized treatment and risk management.

As lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) become more widespread, the number of spent LIBs gradually increases. Until now, recycling of spent LIBs has mainly concentrated on high-value cathodes, but the anode graphite has not yet attracted wide attention. In this work, spent graphite from LIBs was oxidized to graphene oxide and then thermally reduced to reduced graphene oxide (RGO), which serves as the cathode of aqueous Zn dual-ion batteries (ZDIBs). The thermal reduction process enables RGO with a large layer spacing and porous structure, which increase the anion insertion sites and transfer kinetics. As a result, the corresponding battery exhibits a high specific capacity of 96.82 mAh g-1 at 1 A g-1, superior rate capability, and a high capacity retention rate of 80% after 2000 cycles. Moreover, RGO gradually transforms into a long-range disordered structure during the cycling process, which provides more transport routes and active sites for anion insertion and thus leads to the increase of capacity. This work combines the recycling of spent graphite with aqueous ZDIBs, realizing the high-value use of spent graphite.

We describe for the first time, a high-quality genome for a rare human yeast pathogen Candida mucifera, from a patient with chronic suppurative otitis media. This pathogen exhibited reduced azole susceptibility, similar to its close relatives within the Trichomonascus ciferrii species complex.

AIM: The study objective was to evaluate the primary feasibility of endoscopic submucosal resection (ESD) and endoscopic full-thickness resection (EFTR) via balloon-assisted enteroscopy (BAE) to treat small bowel subepithelial lesions (SELs). METHOD: A retrospective case series study was performed. The first fifteen consecutive patients who underwent ESD (n = 10) and EFTR (n = 5) via BAE to remove small bowel SELs from November 2016 to December 2023 were included. The main outcome measures were the technique success rate, operative time and complication rate. RESULTS: This research focused on 15 cases of jejunoileal SELs, four cases of lipomyoma, three cases of ectopic pancreas, two cases of NETs, three cases of benign fibrous tumours and three cases of angioma. The overall technique success rate was 86.7%, with 100% (10/10) and 60% (3/5) for BAE-ESD and BAE-EFTR, respectively, in removing small bowel SELs. Two cases of EFTR failed, as the BAE operation was unsuitable for tumour resection and suture repair of a perforated wound. No serious bleeding or any postoperative complications occurred. The median time of endoscopic resection via BAE for SELs was 44 min (range 22-68 min). CONCLUSION: ESD and EFTR via BAE might be alternative choices for treating small SELs in the small bowel, with the advantages of clear and accurate positioning and minimal invasiveness. However, its superiority over surgery still needs to be further investigated.

BACKGROUND: Cardamine violifolia is a significant Brassicaceae plant known for its high selenium (Se) accumulation capacity, serving as an essential source of Se for both humans and animals. WRKY transcription factors play crucial roles in plant responses to various biotic and abiotic stresses, including cadmium stress, iron deficiency, and Se tolerance. However, the molecular mechanism of CvWRKY in Se accumulation is not completely clear. RESULTS: In this study, 120 WRKYs with conserved domains were identified from C. violifolia and classified into three groups based on phylogenetic relationships, with Group II further subdivided into five subgroups. Gene structure analysis revealed WRKY variations and mutations within the CvWRKYs. Segmental duplication events were identified as the primary driving force behind the expansion of the CvWRKY family, with numerous stress-responsive cis-acting elements found in the promoters of CvWRKYs. Transcriptome analysis of plants treated with exogenous Se and determination of Se levels revealed a strong positive correlation between the expression levels of CvWRKY034 and the Se content. Moreover, CvWRKY021 and CvWRKY099 exhibited high homology with AtWRKY47, a gene involved in regulating Se accumulation in Arabidopsis thaliana. The WRKY domains of CvWRKY021 and AtWRKY47 were highly conserved, and transcriptome data analysis revealed that CvWRKY021 responded to Na2SeO4 induction, showing a positive correlation with the concentration of Na2SeO4 treatment. Under the induction of Na2SeO3, CvWRKY021 and CvWRKY034 were significantly upregulated in the roots but downregulated in the shoots, and the Se content in the roots increased significantly and was mainly concentrated in the roots. CvWRKY021 and CvWRKY034 may be involved in the accumulation of Se in roots. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study elucidate the evolution of CvWRKYs in the C. violifolia genome and provide valuable resources for further understanding the functional characteristics of WRKYs related to Se hyperaccumulation in C. violifolia.

The key pathogenesis of atherosclerosis(AS) in traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) lies in the combination of phlegm and stasis due to spleen deficiency. In Western medicine, it is believed that pyroptosis can lead to atherosclerosis, and endoplasmic reticulum stress has been shown to promote pyroptosis. According to the theories of " spleen in correlation with endoplasmic reticulum",guided by spleen governing transportation and transformation, and endoplasmic reticulum processing proteins, it is believed that the syndrome of phlegm combined with stasis due to spleen deficiency has similarities with the mechanism of macrophage pyroptosis induced by endoplasmic reticulum stress in accelerating the progression of AS. This study explored the correlation between phlegm combined with stasis due to spleen deficiency and pyroptosis induced by endoplasmic reticulum stress, and then analyzed the modern medical mechanisms of phlegm combined with stasis due to spleen deficiency in mediating atherosclerosis. The discussion enriches the theory of spleen in correlation with endoplasmic reticulum, provides research ideas on the prevention and treatment of AS by invigorating spleen,eliminating phlegm, and resolving stasis, and lays a theoretical foundation for the clinical application of spleen-invigorating TCM in the treatment of AS.

"Jiaobai" is a symbiont of Zizania latifolia and Ustilago esculenta, producing fleshy galls as a popular vegetable in South and East Asia. Current "Jiaobai" cultivars exhibit abundant variation in their gall formation date; however, the underlying mechanism is not clear. In this study, a strict short-day (SD) "Jiaobai" line "YD-3" was used. Plants were treated with two day-length regimes [14 h/10 h (day/night) (control) and 8 h/16 h (day/night) (SD)] from 100 to 130 days after planting. The gall swelling rate of the two treatments and another early SD treatment (from 60 to 90 days after planting), together with the contingent flowering plants in the experiment population, revealed that SD can improve both gall enlargement and flowering of "Jiaobai" plants. Comparison of RNA sequencing data among control, SD swelling, and SD flowering treatments of leaves and meristems indicated that SD promotion of "Jiaobai" swelling is conducted by the CONSTANS (CO)-FLOWERING LOCUS T (FT) pathway, similar but not identical to the SD-induced flowering pathway in Z latifolia and rice. "Virus-induced gene silencing", "Yeast one-hybrid assay" and "Dual-luciferase assay" showed that a FT gene, ZlGsd1, is critical in SD promotion of gall formation and is positively regulated by a CO gene, ZlCOL1. Our study elucidated how photoperiod affects the formation of a unique organ produced by plant-fungus symbiosis. The difference in SD response between "Jiaobai" and rice, as well as their potential applications in breeding of "Jiaobai" and rice, were also discussed.

A Pd-catalyzed asymmetric higher-order dipolar cycloaddition between allenyl carbonates and azadienes is achieved by exploiting novel alkylidene-π-allyl-Pd dipoles. This research provides a modular platform for the synthesis of challenging chiral endocyclic allenes bearing a medium-sized heterocyclic motif and a centrally chiral stereocenter in good yields with high enantio- and diastereoselectivities (29 examples, up to 97% yield, 97:3 er and >19:1 dr). Experimental and computational studies elucidate the possible reaction mechanism and the observed stereochemical results. Based on the mechanistic understanding, a new π-propargyl-Pd dipole was designed to further extend the success of the higher order dipolar cycloaddition strategy to the synthesis of 10-membered endocyclic alkynes from propargyl carbonates and azadienes (13 examples, up to 98% yield and 94.5:5.5 er).

Background: The virulence of Yersinia pestis strains in the Rattus flavipectus plague focus is relatively low. The purpose of this study was to investigate the undetected, sporadic plague cases in plague foci and provide the basis for plague prevention and control. Methods: A 3-year-old plague-confirmed case was investigated in the R. flavipectus plague focus of Yunnan Province in 2020 due to the intensive screening for fever symptoms during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Epidemiological investigation, laboratory testing, and clinical treatment were conducted for the case. The expanded survey was carried out around the case within a 7-km radius, including the resident population, domesticated dogs, and rats. PCR and indirect hemagglutination tests were performed on the collected samples. Results: The isolation rates of Y. pestis were 100.0% (7 out of 7) in dead rats and 4.00% (3 out of 75) in live rats in the survey area of the foci. A total of 5.00% (6 out of 120) of the domesticated dogs were F1 antibody positive. Nine local people were determined for plague infection recently (0.92%, 9 out of 978). The locations of human cases coincided with the Y. pestis epidemic area among the animals. Conclusion: This study discovered the existence of plague cases that had not been detected by routine surveillance in the R. flavipectus plague focus, and the actual epidemic of human infection may be underestimated.

Strains from the Cryptococcus gattii species complex (CGSC) have caused the Pacific Northwest cryptococcosis outbreak, the largest cluster of life-threatening fungal infections in otherwise healthy human hosts known to date. In this study, we utilized a pan-phenome-based method to assess the fitness outcomes of CGSC strains under 31 stress conditions, providing a comprehensive overview of 2,821 phenotype-strain associations within this pathogenic clade. Phenotypic clustering analysis revealed a strong correlation between distinct types of stress phenotypes in a subset of CGSC strains, suggesting that shared determinants coordinate their adaptations to various stresses. Notably, a specific group of strains, including the outbreak isolates, exhibited a remarkable ability to adapt to all three of the most commonly used antifungal drugs for treating cryptococcosis (amphotericin B, 5-fluorocytosine, and fluconazole). By integrating pan-genomic and pan-transcriptomic analyses, we identified previously unrecognized genes that play crucial roles in conferring multidrug resistance in an outbreak strain with high multidrug adaptation. From these genes, we identified biomarkers that enable the accurate prediction of highly multidrug-adapted CGSC strains, achieving maximum accuracy and area under the curve (AUC) of 0.79 and 0.86, respectively, using machine learning algorithms. Overall, we developed a pan-omic approach to identify cryptococcal multidrug resistance determinants and predict highly multidrug-adapted CGSC strains that may pose significant clinical concern.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The RAS superfamily oncogenes play significant roles in various types of malignant tumors. However, little is known about the role of RAS-like oncoprotein B (RALB) in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). This study evaluated whether RALB can be a prognostic and therapeutic target for HNSCC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 504 HNSCC samples from The Cancer Genome Atlas database were segregated into two groups: RALB-high and RALB-low. The clinical significance of RALB expression in HNSCC patients was investigated. Cell proliferation, migration, and invasion assays were performed in HN-1 and HN-5 cells by silencing RALB using siRNA. Gene enrichment and immune infiltration analyses were also performed. RESULTS: RALB expression was elevated in HNSCC tissues compared with normal tissues and was an independent risk factor associated with poor prognosis. A nomogram including the RALB expression level was established to predict the prognosis of HNSCC patients and showed highest sensitivity and benefit in predicting the three-year survival. The inhibition of RALB expression effectively impeded the proliferation, invasion, and migration of HNSCC cells. Importantly, RALB levels were significantly correlated with T cell-mediated immune responses, especially in human papillomavirus-positive HNSCC samples. CONCLUSION: This study identified RALB as a potential prognostic and therapeutic target for HNSCC, and provided insight into the relationship between RALB and revealed an innovative strategy for HNSCC immunotherapy.

Objective: The present study aimed to explore the potential causal relationship between childhood asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in European and East Asian populations with Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. Methods: Based on summary data from genome-wide association studies, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with childhood asthma were used as instrumental variables. The MR analysis employed the inverse variance weighting, MR-Egger regression and weighted median method to estimate the causal effect between childhood asthma and COPD in European and East Asian populations. Cochran's Q test, MR-PRESSO method and MR-Egger intercept were used to detect heterogeneity, outliers and horizontal pleiotropy, respectively. Leave-one-out analysis applied to assess the effect of removing individual SNP on the estimate of causal association. Results: The MR analysis showed no genetic causal relationship between childhood asthma and COPD. The results of Cochran's Q test, MR-PRESSO and MR-Egger regression indicated the absence of heterogeneity, outliers and horizontal pleiotropy, respectively. Leave-one-out analysis showed no significant difference in the statistical results after exclusion of single SNPs. Conclusions: The MR analysis revealed that there is no causal relationship between childhood asthma and COPD at the genetic level in both European and East Asian populations. Additionally, due to the presence of shared confounding factors and pathogenic genes, further research is needed to comprehensively assess the relationship between childhood asthma and COPD.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to compare the accuracy of digital complete-arch implant impressions with prefabricated aids using three intraoral scanners (IOSs) and explore the correlation between virtual deviation measurement and physical framework misfit. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four edentulous maxillary master models with four and six parallel and angular implants were fabricated and scanned by a laboratory scanner as reference scans. Ten scans of each master model were acquired using three IOSs (IOS-T, IOS-M, and IOS-A) with and without prefabricated aids. Trueness and precision of root mean square (RMS) errors were measured. Ten aluminum alloy frameworks were fabricated, and the misfit was measured with a micro-computed tomography scan with one screw tightened. RESULTS: Trueness and precision showed significant improvement when prefabricated aids were used for all three IOSs (p < 0.010). Median (interquartile range) RMS errors of trueness reduced from 67.5 (30.4) to 61.8 (30.3) µm, from 100.6 (35.4) to 45.9 (15.1) µm, and from 52.7 (33.2) to 41.1 (22.5) µm for scanner IOS-T, IOS-M, and IOS-A, respectively (p < 0.010). The precision of IOS-A and IOS-M was significantly better than IOS-T when using prefabricated aid (p < 0.001). RMS errors and the maximum marginal misfit of the framework were significantly correlated (p < 0.001, R2 = 0.845). CONCLUSIONS: With the prefabricated aids, the accuracy of IOSs enhanced significantly in digital complete-arch implant impressions. Three IOSs showed different levels of improvement in accuracy. Virtual RMS errors <62.2 µm could be the clinically acceptable threshold (150 µm) for framework passive fit.

The heavy metal lead (Pb) pollution in marine environment has been widely concerned. The liver and intestine are important for the health of fish. In this study, the grouper were exposed to 1 µg/L Pb for 14 days, and the physiological homeostasis changes were explored via gut-liver axis. The results showed that Pb stress caused liver morphological changes, oxidative stress, and the accumulation and peroxidation of the lipids. The liver metabolism were disturbed, especially amino acid metabolism and the synthesis and degradation of ketone bodies. Pb stress also caused intestinal mucosal ablation, tight junction dysfunction and inflammatory response. Additionally, intestinal microbial diversity was decreased, and the community composition was altered especially several bacteria genera (Ruminococcus UCG-005, Ruminococcus UCG-014, Oscillibacter, and Streptococcus) were significantly correlated with the physiological indexes and metabolites of the liver. These results reveal that Pb stress negatively affect the physiological homeostasis of the grouper via gut-liver axis.

Histidine kinases (HKs) are important sensor proteins in fungi and play an essential role in environmental adaptation. However, the mechanisms by which fungi sense and respond to fungivores attack via HKs are not fully understood. In this study, we utilized Neurospora crassa to investigate the involvement of HKs in responding to fungivores attack. We found that the 11 HKs in N. crassa not only affected the growth and development, but also led to fluctuations in antioxidant production. Ten mutants in the genes encoding HKs (except ∆phy1) showed increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), especially upon Sinella curviseta attack. The ROS burst triggered changes in conidia and perithecial beaks formation, as well as accumulation of ß-glucan, ergothioneine, ergosterol, and carotenoids. ß-glucan was increased in ∆hk9, ∆os1, ∆hcp1, ∆nik2, ∆sln1, ∆phy1 and ∆phy2 mutants compared to the wild-type strain. In parallel, ergothioneine accumulation was improved in ∆phy1 and ∆hk16 mutants and further increased upon attack, except in ∆os1 and ∆hk16 mutants. Additionally, fungivores attack stimulated ergosterol and dehydroergosterol production in ∆hk9 and ∆os1 mutants. Furthermore, deletion of these genes altered carotenoid accumulation, with wild-type strain, ∆hk9, ∆os1, ∆hcp1, ∆sln1, ∆phy2, and ∆dcc1mutants showing an increase in carotenoids upon attack. Taken together, HKs are involved in regulating the production of conidia and antioxidants. Thus, HKs may act as sensors of fungivores attack and effectively improve the adaptive capacity of fungi to environmental stimuli.

With the acceleration of population aging, disability in older adults is a growing public health problem; however, little is known about the role of specific leisure-time activities in affecting disability. This study prospectively examined the association of leisure-time activities with disability among the Chinese oldest old. A total of 14 039 adults aged 80 years or older (median age of 89.8 years) were enrolled from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey from 1998 to 2014. Disability was defined as the presence of concurrent impairment in activities of daily living and physical performance. Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate the associations between leisure-time activities and disability. During a mean of 4.2 years (2.7 years) of follow-up, 4487 participants developed disability. Compared with participants who never engaged in leisure-time activities, participants who engaged in almost daily activities, including gardening, keeping domestic animals or pets, playing cards or mahjong, reading books or newspapers, and watching TV or listening to the radio had a lower risk of disability, with HRs of 0.78 (0.69-0.88), 0.64 (0.58-0.70), 0.74 (0.63-0.86), 0.74 (0.65-0.84), and 0.84 (0.77-0.90), respectively. Moreover, the risk of disability gradually decreased with participation in an increasing number of those leisure-time activities (P for trend <0.001). Frequent engagement in leisure-time activities was associated with a lower risk of disability among the Chinese oldest old. This study highlights the importance of incorporating a broad range of leisure-time activities into the daily lives of older adults.
