Aeromonas hydrophila, an aquatic pathogenic bacterium, has been found to infect many fish species and cause huge aquaculture losses. Antibiotics are the most common drugs used to treat these infections. However, antibiotic abuse can lead to the development of antibiotic resistance. Probiotics have the potential to replace antibiotics for preventing infections. Zebrafish (Danio rerio) is a model organism used to study the innate immune system and host-pathogen interactions. Currently, there is little information on how the fish immune system responds to A. hydrophila and probiotic treatment. To increase the understanding of the molecular mechanisms behind the zebrafish defense against A. hydrophila and provide evidence that antibiotics can be replaced by probiotics, a transcriptome analysis of the zebrafish spleen was conducted 48 hours after infection by A. hydrophila, as well as after treatment using Lactococcus lactis KUST48 4 hours after infection. A total of 36,499 genes were obtained. There were 3,337 genes found to have significant differential expression between treatment and control groups. According to further annotation and enrichment analysis, differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were involved in signal transduction, endocrine system cancer, and the immune system. Insulin resistance disappeared in the zebrafish after treatment. Quantitative real-time PCR was performed to confirm the significant regulation of immune defense DEGs, the results of which were consistent with the RNA-sequencing data. These results could serve as a basis for future studies on the immune response to A. hydrophila and provide suggestions for probiotic alternatives to antibiotics, which will be of great significance to aquaculture and environmental protection.IMPORTANCEIn recent years, the unreasonable use of antibiotics has led to the emergence of drug-resistant pathogenic bacteria, antibiotic residues, cross infection, toxic side effects, and so on, which has caused a serious threat to human food safety and life health. In recent years, many studies have demonstrated the potential of probiotics as a substitute for antibiotics, but there is still a lack of understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying probiotic therapy. We conduct a research on the impact of Lactococcus lactis KUST48 on the transcription profile of Aeromonas hydrophila-infected zebrafish spleen. Mortality of zebrafish infected with A. hydrophila was significantly reduced after treatment with L. lactis KUST48. Our results can help to strengthen our understanding of the pathogenic mechanisms of zebrafish and provide a valuable reference for the molecular mechanisms of probiotic therapy.

WNTs are essential factors for stem cell biology, embryonic development, and for maintaining homeostasis and tissue repair in adults. Difficulties in purifying WNTs and their lack of receptor selectivity have hampered research and regenerative medicine development. While breakthroughs in WNT mimetic development have overcome some of these difficulties, the tools developed so far are incomplete and mimetics alone are often not sufficient. Here, we developed a complete set of WNT mimetic molecules that cover all WNT/ß-catenin-activating Frizzleds (FZDs). We show that FZD1,2,7 stimulate salivary gland expansion in vivo and salivary gland organoid expansion. We further describe the discovery of a novel WNT-modulating platform that combines WNT and RSPO mimetics' effects into one molecule. This set of molecules supports better organoid expansion in various tissues. These WNT-activating platforms can be broadly applied to organoids, pluripotent stem cells, and in vivo research, and serve as bases for future therapeutic development.

Enrofloxacin (ENFX) has a broad-spectrum antibiotic activity, which is widely used in aquaculture. The effect of different ENFX exposure ways on the gut microbiota of tilapia is unclear. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of ENFX exposure on the gut microbiota of tilapia fish (Oreochromis niloticus). Three methods of ENFX exposure were selected: injection (IEG), oral administration (OEG) and soaking (SEG). After 48 h of exposure period, the intestine of tilapia was collected for high-throughput sequencing. PCoA analysis revealed a distinct clustering of control group, and which was located rather far away from ENFX exposure groups. The dominant phyla in the gut microbiota of tilapia fish were Proteobacteria, Actinobacteriota, Fusobacteria and Firmicutes. Compared to the control group, phylum Fusobacteriota was increased in SEG and IEG while decreased in OEG. ENFX treatment led to a decline in Corynebacterium, Clostridium sensu stricto_3 and Bacillus in treated fish compared with control fish, accompanied by an increase in Akkermansia, Ralstonia and Romboutsia. IEG had the least effect on gut microbiota of tilapia because it retained more microbes among treatment groups. Alpha- diversity decreased the most in SEG, but retained more probiotics such as Cetobacterium and Akkermansia. We assessed the effect of enrofloxacin on tilapia by changes in intestinal flora. The result indicated that either exposure method significantly reduced the diversity of tilapia gut microbiota. It may provide basic data for the scientific use of ENFX in aquaculture.

Objectives: Avoiding touching the eyes, nose, and mouth (T-zone) is a strategy to reduce the spread of COVID-19. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a brief mindfulness-based intervention (MBI) named "STOP (Stop, Take a Breath, Observe, Proceed) touching your face" for reducing face-touching behavior. Methods: In this online-based, two-arm, wait-list, randomized controlled trial, eligible participants were randomly assigned to the intervention (n = 545) or control group (n = 545). The results of 60-min self-monitoring of face-touching behavior were reported before and after the intervention. Reduction of the percentage of T-zone touching was the primary outcome, and reduction of face-touching frequency was a key secondary outcome. Outcomes were analyzed on an intention-to-treat (ITT) basis with a complete case analysis (CCA). Results: ITT analysis revealed that the percentage of T-zone touching was significantly reduced by 8.1% in the intervention group (from 81.1 to 73.0%, RR = 0.901, OR = 0.631, RD = - 0.081, p = 0.002), and insignificantly reduced by 0.6% in the control group (from 80.0 to 79.4%, p = 0.821). Fewer participants performed T-zone touching in the intervention group than in the control group (73.0% vs. 79.4%, RR = 0.919, OR = 0.700, RD = - 0.064, p = 0.015) after the intervention, and there was a greater reduction of T-zone touching frequency in the intervention group than in the control group [mean ± SD: 1.7 ± 5.13 vs. 0.7 ± 3.98, mean difference (95% CI): 1.03 (0.48 to 1.58), p < 0.001, Cohen's d = - 0.218]. The above results were further confirmed by CCA. Conclusions: This brief mindfulness-based intervention was potentially effective at reducing the spread of COVID-19 and could be further investigated as an intervention for preventing other infectious diseases spread by hand-to-face touching. In this study, a type of biodegradable multi-hollow iron phosphate (FeP) with excellent Fenton reaction ability and doxorubicin (DOX) loading capacity is synthesized in one-pot. This hollow FeP with complex interior not only affords high drug loading efficiency, but also obviates DOX leakage in normal tissues. In order to inhibit the formation of inert Fe(OH)x and endow the nanoplatform with a highly hydrophilic surface, PEG was anchored to it with a dopamine linkage, which formed an Fe chelating complex. DOX-loaded FeP modified with PEG could be disintegrated when responding to the lysosomal acid environment, releasing both ferric and ferrous ions as well as DOX. Therefore, apart from chemotherapy with DOX, the continuously generated iron ions catalyze a fast Fenton reaction with the innate H2O2 in tumor cells and produce abundant highly toxic hydroxyl radicals for nanocatalytic tumor therapy. Taken together, we believe that this nanoplatform will significantly advance the fields of both Fe-based nanomaterials and nanocatalytic tumor therapy.

tRNA synthetase deficiency leads to unfolded protein responses in neuronal disorders; however, its function in embryonic neurogenesis remains unclear. This study identified an aars1cq71/cq71 mutant zebrafish allele that showed increased neuronal apoptosis and compromised neurogenesis. aars1 transcripts were highly expressed in primary neural progenitor cells, and their aberration resulted in protein overloading and activated Perk. nfe2l2b, a paralog of mammalian Nfe2l2, which encodes Nrf2, is a pivotal executor of Perk signaling that regulates neuronal phenotypes in aars1cq71/cq71 mutants. Interference of nfe2l2b in nfe2l2bΔ1/Δ1 mutants did not affect global larval development. However, aars1cq71/cq71;nfe2l2bΔ1/Δ1 mutant embryos exhibited increased neuronal cell survival and neurogenesis compared with their aars1cq71/cq71 siblings. nfe2l2b was harnessed by Perk at two levels. Its transcript was regulated by Chop, an implementer of Perk. It was also phosphorylated by Perk. Both pathways synergistically assured the nuclear functions of nfe2l2b to control cell survival by targeting p53. Our study extends the understanding of tRNA synthetase in neurogenesis and implies that Nrf2 is a cue to mitigate neurodegenerative pathogenesis.

Background: Acupuncture is a well-known treatment option for ischemic stroke recovery, but evidence of its effectiveness remains limited. This is a randomized controlled trial to evaluate the effectiveness of acupuncture treatment for ischemic stroke rehabilitation. Methods: Rehabilitation training was provided to the control group. In acupuncture arm 1, these acupoints were derived from the ancient books, including GV20 (baihui), GV26 (shuigou), PC9 (zhongchong), ST6 (jiache), ST4 (dicang), LI15 (jianyu), LI11 (quchi), LI4 (hegu), GB30 (huantiao), GB31 (fengshi), GB34 (yanglingquan), and GB39 (xuanzhong). In acupuncture arm 2, the acupoints used were GV20 (baihui), PC6 (neiguan), LI11 (quchi), LI10 (shousanli), SJ5 (waiguan), LI4 (hegu), GB30 (huantiao), ST36 (zusanli), GB34 (yanglingquan), SP6 (sanyinjiao), ST41 (jiexi), and LR3 (taichong), which were extracted from Acupuncture and Moxibustion Science. After acupuncture, the needles were left in for 30 min and manually manipulated every 10 min. The three groups received treatment once a day, 5 times a week for 2 weeks. The primary outcome was the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS), and the secondary outcomes were the Barthel Index (BI) and the Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS). Outcomes were measured in patients both before and after treatment. Results: A total of 497 patients with ischemic stroke were randomized into either arm 1 (159 cases), arm 2 (173 cases), or the control group (165 cases). After 2 weeks of treatment, the NIHSS scores for arm 1 were lower than those of the control group (P = 0.017); the BI scores were higher in arm two than that in the control group at T2 (P = 0.016) and follow-up (P = 0.020). Additionally, there was no significant difference between arm one and the control group for either the BI scores or the MAS scores (P > 0.05) and no significant difference between arm two and the control group for the MAS scores or the NIHSS scores (P > 0.05). Conclusion: The clinical efficacy of arm 1 and arm 2 (acupuncture groups) was superior to that of the control group, but there was no difference between the effects of the two acupuncture groups. BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Current management of inflammatory bowel disease leaves a clear unmet need to treat the severe epithelial damage. Modulation of Wnt signaling might present an opportunity to achieve histological remission and mucosal healing when treating IBD. Exogenous R-spondin, which amplifies Wnt signals by maintaining cell surface expression of Frizzled (Fzd) and low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein receptors, not only helps repair intestine epithelial damage, but also induces hyperplasia of normal epithelium. Wnt signaling may also be modulated with the recently developed Wnt mimetics, recombinant antibody-based molecules mimicking endogenous Wnts. METHODS: We first compared the epithelial healing effects of RSPO2 and a Wnt mimetic with broad Fzd specificity in an acute dextran sulfate sodium mouse colitis model. Guided by Fzd expression patterns in the colon epithelium, we also examined the effects of Wnt mimetics with subfamily Fzd specificities. RESULTS: In the DSS model, Wnt mimetics repaired damaged colon epithelium and reduced disease activity and inflammation and had no apparent effect on uninjured tissue. We further identified that the FZD5/8 and LRP6 receptor-specific Wnt mimetic, SZN-1326-p, was associated with the robust repair effect. Through a range of approaches including single-cell transcriptome analyses, we demonstrated that SZN-1326-p directly impacted epithelial cells, driving transient expansion of stem and progenitor cells, promoting differentiation of epithelial cells, histologically restoring the damaged epithelium, and secondarily to epithelial repair, reducing inflammation. CONCLUSIONS: It is feasible to design Wnt mimetics such as SZN-1326-p that impact damaged intestine epithelium specifically and restore its physiological functions, an approach that holds promise for treating epithelial damage in inflammatory bowel disease.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine whether retinal gap junctions (GJs) via connexin 36 (Cx36, mediating coupling of many retinal cell types) and horizontal cell (HC-HC) coupling, are involved in emmetropization. Methods: Guinea pigs (3 weeks old) were monocularly form deprived (FD) or raised without FD (in normal visual [NV] environment) for 2 days or 4 weeks; alternatively, they wore a -4 D lens (hyperopic defocus [HD]) or 0 D lens for 2 days or 1 week. FD and NV eyes received daily subconjunctival injections of a nonspecific GJ-uncoupling agent, 18-ß-Glycyrrhetinic Acid (18-ß-GA). The amounts of total Cx36 and of phosphorylated Cx36 (P-Cx36; activated state that increases cell-cell coupling), in the inner and outer plexiform layers (IPLs and OPLs), were evaluated by quantitative immunofluorescence (IF), and HC-HC coupling was evaluated by cut-loading with neurobiotin. Results: FD per se (excluding effect of light-attenuation) increased HC-HC coupling in OPL, whereas HD did not affect it. HD for 2 days or 1 week had no significant effect on retinal content of Cx36 or P-Cx36. FD for 4 weeks decreased the total amounts of Cx36 and P-Cx36, and the P-Cx36/Cx36 ratio, in the IPL. Subconjunctival 18-ß-GA induced myopia in NV eyes and increased the myopic shifts in FD eyes, while reducing the amounts of Cx36 and P-Cx36 in both the IPL and OPL. Conclusions: These results suggest that cell-cell coupling via GJs containing Cx36 (particularly those in the IPL) plays a role in emmetropization and form deprivation myopia (FDM) in mammals. Although both FD and 18-ß-GA induced myopia, they had opposite effects on HC-HC coupling. These findings suggest that HC-HC coupling in the OPL might not play a significant role in emmetropization and myopia development.

The Wnt signaling pathway is intricately connected with bone mass regulation in humans and rodent models. We designed an antibody-based platform that generates potent and selective Wnt mimetics. Using this platform, we engineer bi-specific Wnt mimetics that target Frizzled and low-density lipoprotein receptor-related proteins and evaluate their effects on bone accrual in murine models. These synthetic Wnt agonists induce rapid and robust bone building effects, and correct bone mass deficiency and bone defects in various disease models, including osteoporosis, aging, and long bone fracture. Furthermore, when these Wnt agonists are combined with antiresorptive bisphosphonates or anti-sclerostin antibody therapies, additional bone accrual/maintenance effects are observed compared to monotherapy, which could benefit individuals with severe and/or acute bone-building deficiencies. Our data support the continued development of Wnt mimetics for the treatment of diseases of low bone mineral density, including osteoporosis.

We report on two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) as saturable absorber (SA) material in a passively Q-switched erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) operating at 1.5 µm. The 2D hBN film as an SA is fabricated and transferred onto the optical fiber tip by natural deposition technology. In the Q-switched operation, we obtain stable Q-switched laser operation with a maximum average 10% output power of 2.25 mW, corresponding to a repetition frequency of 55.5 kHz, shortest pulse width of 6.77 µs, and single pulse energy of 40.49 nJ. The achieved PQS at 1.5 µm EDFL with 2D hBN as an SA may have potential applications in many novel 2D materials and all-fiber lasers.

INTRODUCTION: Face-touching behaviour often happens frequently and automatically, and poses potential risk for spreading infectious disease. Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) have shown its efficacy in the treatment of behaviour disorders. This study aims to evaluate an online mindfulness-based brief intervention skill named 'STOP (Stop, Take a Breath, Observe, Proceed) touching your face' in reducing face-touching behaviour. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This will be an online-based, randomised, controlled, trial. We will recruit 1000 participants, and will randomise and allocate participants 1:1 to the 'STOP touching your face' (both 750-word text and 5 min audio description by online) intervention group (n=500) and the wait-list control group (n=500). All participants will be asked to monitor and record their face-touching behaviour during a 60 min period before and after the intervention. Primary outcome will be the efficacy of short-term mindfulness-based 'STOP touching your face' intervention for reducing the frequency of face-touching. The secondary outcomes will be percentage of participants touching their faces; the correlation between the psychological traits of mindfulness and face-touching behaviour; and the differences of face-touching behaviour between left-handers and right-handers. Analysis of covariance, regression analysis, χ2 test, t-test, Pearson's correlations will be applied in data analysis. We will recruit 1000 participants from April to July 2020 or until the recruitment process is complete. The follow-up will be completed in July 2020. We expect all trial results to be available by the end of July 2020. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: The study protocol has been approved by the Ethics Committee of Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, an affiliate of Zhejiang University, Medical College (No. 20200401-32). Study results will be disseminated via social media and peer-reviewed publications. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: NCT04330352.

A sensitivity enhanced temperature sensor with cascaded tapered two-mode fibers (TTMFs) based on the Vernier effect is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. It is confirmed that series connection exhibits higher extinction ratio than parallel one both by theory and experiments, which provides guidance for related experiments. In experiments, two TTMFs have the same single-mode fiber-TTMF-single-mode fiber configuration, while the free spectral ranges (FSRs) are chosen with slightly difference by modifying the parameters in the tapering process. Experimental results show that the proposed temperature sensor possesses sensitivity of -3.348 nm/°C in temperature measurement range from 25 °C to 60°C, 11.3 times sensitivity enhancement in comparison with single TTMF. Benefiting from advantages of high temperature sensitivity, simplicity of manufacture and long distance sensing, this novel sensitivity enhanced temperature sensor can be applied to various particular fields, such as oil wells, coal mines and so on.

Heterotopic ossification (HO), the formation of ectopic bone in soft tissues, has been extensively studied in its two primary forms: post-traumatic HO (tHO) typically found in patients who have experienced musculoskeletal or neurogenic injury and in fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP), where it is genetically driven. Given that in both diseases HO arises via endochondral ossification, the molecular mechanisms behind both diseases have been postulated to be manifestations of similar pathways including those activated by BMP/TGFß superfamily ligands. A significant step towards understanding the molecular mechanism by which HO arises in FOP was the discovery that FOP causing ACVR1 variants trigger HO in response to activin A, a ligand that does not activate signaling from wild type ACVR1, and that is not inherently osteogenic in wild type settings. The physiological significance of this finding was demonstrated by showing that activin A neutralizing antibodies stop HO in two different genetically accurate mouse models of FOP. In order to explore the role of activin A in tHO, we performed single cell RNA sequencing and compared the expression of activin A as well as other BMP pathway genes in tHO and FOP HO. We show that activin A is expressed in response to injury in both settings, but by different types of cells. Given that wild type ACVR1 does not transduce signal when engaged by activin A, we hypothesized that inhibition of activin A will not block tHO. Nonetheless, as activin A was expressed in tHO lesions, we tested its inhibition and compared it with inhibition of BMPs. We show here that anti-activin A does not block tHO, whereas agents such as antibodies that neutralize ACVR1 or ALK3-Fc (which blocks osteogenic BMPs) are beneficial, though not completely curative. These results demonstrate that inhibition of activin A should not be considered as a therapeutic strategy for ameliorating tHO.

Novel Janus nanoparticles (J-NPs) are developed by using single iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles as the core and hydrophobic/hydrophilic polymeric brushes as the cloak. Because of the superparamagnetism and asymmetric functionality of J-NPs, they are used as drug carriers and therapeutic agents for cancer chemotherapy and magnetic hyperthermia with a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) guide. The asymmetric functionality is constituted of hydrophobic polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) brushes and hydrophilic polyacrylic acid (PAA) brushes, which are 'grafting to' or 'grafting from' Fe3O4 nanoparticles via activators regenerated by electron transfer atom transfer radical polymerization. The terminal chains of PMMA and PAA brushes are coordinated with Fe3O4 nanoparticles, so PMMA/Fe3O4/PAA J-NPs possess structural stability in solvents. Because of the brush-structure, PMMA/Fe3O4/PAA J-NPs show high encapsulation efficiency (89.75 ± 2.35%) and loading capacity (8.95 ± 0.26%). Under the alternating magnetic field (AMF), drug-loaded J-NPs achieve the highest cell proliferation-inhibition ratio in the cell proliferation test in vitro and the tumor growth inhibition test in vivo compared to single chemotherapy or magnetic hyperthermia. Meanwhile, J-NPs show good T2 imaging.

Previous studies have proved that fibrin is an excellent scaffold material for tissue engineered blood vessel. However, the mechanical properties of fibrin are not enough. One way to solve the problem is to combine polymer materials with fibrin to enhance its biomechanical properties. In this study, a novel polycaprolactone (PCL)/fibrin composite scaffold was prepared by electrospinning technology. The morphological, physicochemical analysis, blood compatibility, biomechanical properties, biocompatibility and biodegradability of this vascular scaffold were evaluated. The results showed that electrospun PCL/fibrin scaffold possessed smaller aperture and larger fiber diameter than that of fibrin scaffold. The swelling ratio of the vascular PCL/fibrin scaffold at (0:100), (10:90), (20:80) and (30:70) was 112 ± 5.3, 103 ± 6.9, 94 ± 5.9 and 89 ± 3.4%, respectively. Mechanical properties of fibrin scaffolds were enhanced significantly by the addition of PCL. Furthermore, the time of plasma re-calcification, activated partial thromboplastin time and thromboplastin time in four different proportions of PCL/fibrin scaffolds were similar to that of the control group. Degradation experiments in vitro demonstrated that the degradation rate of PCL/fibrin scaffold was closely related to the content of PCL. MTT assays and immunofluorescence staining indicated that the stem cells cocultured with the PCL/fibrin scaffold had good proliferation behavior. Live/dead assay confirmed that the number of MSCs in the PCL/fibrin (10:90) group was significantly increased as compared to other groups. The tests in vivo results showed PCL/fibrin scaffold could promote cell infiltration and tissue regeneration and its degradation in vivo was faster than that of PCL scaffold. In summary, PCL/fibrin (20:80) scaffold exhibited balanced mechanical properties and degradability, as well as good cell compatibility properties; therefore, it was a promising tissue engineering material for vascular graft.

This paper analyzes the development strategy of population health informatization in China, and summarizes the measurement direction and evaluation elements of population health informatization. Methods: Literature and field investigation, expert consultation and PEST analysis were used to determine the development level measurement and evaluation framework. Results: Based on the PEST analysis framework, the development level measurement and evaluation factors were defined, and the evaluation framework was established, which included system construction, IT application, information financing, information personnel, information policy and management, and information application effect. The information from hospitals and grass- roots medical and health institutions was also provided. From the perspective of the level of development, the framework of informatization evaluation is further refined.

BACKGROUND: Sleep problems are common in the general population. Cigarette smoking is common in the general population of China. Examinations of the prevalence of poor sleep quality among Chinese smokers and nonsmokers are still lacking. This study was designed to examine sleep quality and sleep disturbances among cigarette smokers and nonsmokers in the general population in central China. METHODS: In this population-based sampling project, we used a multi-stage sampling method to recruit survey participants from September 2012 to October 2012 in rural and urban areas of Hunan province, China. A total of 27,300 subjects were sampled from the general population and 26,282 completed the self-report of cigarette smoking characteristics. Cigarette smoker was defined as having smoked ≥100 cigarette in a lifetime and smoked during the last 28 days. Cigarette smoking characteristics were obtained from smokers, including cigarettes per day, years of smoking, quit attempts, and smoking cravings. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was applied to assess quality of sleep and sleep disturbances (PSQI score > 5). RESULTS: Significantly more smokers than nonsmokers demonstrated poor sleep quality and sleep disturbances. Among smokers, linear regression analyses showed that poor sleep was inversely associated with cigarettes per day, and positively associated with years of smoking, quit attempts, and smoking craving. Logistic regression analysis showed that quit attempts and smoking cravings were associated with higher odds of sleep disturbances. CONCLUSIONS: Sleep disturbances were more prevalent among cigarette smokers than nonsmokers. Smokers also varied in sleep problems on the basis of the characteristics of their smoking. Smokers should be informed about the link between cigarette smoking and poor sleep quality, and should be advised that one of several important health benefits from smoking cessation could be the improvement of sleep quality. Sleep therapy should be recommended as an adjunctive treatment for smoking cessation.

AIM: To evaluate the prevalence of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) within the empty-nest older adults population in poor rural areas of the Hunan province of China, and to explore the effects of resilience and affective balance on cognitive functioning within this specific population. METHODS: A cross-sectional, multistage, random cluster survey was administered to participants from March 2013 to December 2014 in the Hunan province. There were a total of 1164 participants. These participants were empty-nest older adults who were residing in poor rural areas of the Hunan province. The data was collected in two stages. In stage 1, the participants were administered the Montreal Cognitive Assessment for screening cognitive impairment. In stage 2, the participants were screened for any potential cognitive impairment, were administered a series of neuropsychological tests and received a definitive diagnosis for MCI, if the criteria were met. Resilience and affect balance were assessed by the Chinese modified version of the Stress Resilience Quotient and the Affect Balance Scale. RESULTS: The prevalence of MCI was 38.40% within this empty-nest older adult population. Significant differences were found between MCI and non-MCI empty-nest older adults specific to resilience and affect balance. Path analysis showed that resilience mediated the relationship between MCI and affect balance. CONCLUSIONS: Resilience and affect balance were less prominent within the MCI empty-nest older adults than those in the non-MCI group. The results suggest that resilience is a mediating variable between MCI and affect balance. Geriatr Gerontol Int 2019; 19: 222-227.
