RESUMEN

Induction healing technology can effectively repair microcracks in asphalt mixtures and is a promising maintenance technology for asphalt pavements. However, it requires the addition of steel wool fibers to asphalt mixtures and cannot be directly used to repair existing pavements. In order to improve the practicality of the induction healing technology, this article designs a wearing course asphalt mixture with induction healing function that is going to be paved above the existing road surface. The AC-10 asphalt wearing course for induction heating was prepared by adding steel fiber (SF). Analysis of the overall temperature of the surface revealed the unevenness of the temperature distribution, and the healing properties were investigated through protective heating that controlled the maximum temperature of the upper surface. The results show that the addition of SF can improve the high-temperature stability, low-temperature and intermediate-temperature crack resistance, and moisture stability of asphalt wearing courses; however, it has adverse effects on volumetric performance and skid resistance. The heating temperature increases with the increase in SF content, but higher maximum temperature heating rate causes worse heating uniformity and lower healing effect. The maximum heating rate of the sample with 10% SF reaches 3.92 °C/s, while its heating rate at minimum temperature is similar to that of the sample with 6% SF, which is only 0.7 °C/s, indicating the worst heating uniformity. The best healing effect occurs when the maximum temperature of the upper surface reaches 160 °C. The recommended optimal SF content is 6% of the asphalt volume. The asphalt mixture with 6% SF has an appropriate volume performance, moisture stability, and skid resistance; additionally, it has the best high-temperature stability, as well as low-temperature and intermediate-temperature crack resistance. Meanwhile, it also has uniform temperature distribution and efficient healing efficiency.

BACKGROUND: The anion gap (AG) has been linked to the prognosis of many cardiovascular disorders. However, the correlation between albumin-corrected anion gap (ACAG) and 30 d all-cause mortality of intensive care patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is unclear. Furthermore, owing to the lack of studies, it is also unknown whether ACAG is more accurate than AG in predicting the mortality of AMI. METHODS: The Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care IV (MIMIC IV) dataset was used to provide patient data in this retrospective cohort study. ACAG is computed using the formulae: [4.4-{albumin (g/dl)}] × 2.5 + AG. The primary outcome was 30 d all-cause mortality intensive care patients with AMI. To explore the prognostic worthiness of ACAG, the receiver operating characteristic curve, smooth curve fitting, Cox regression model, and Kaplan survival analysis was performed. RESULTS: We enrolled 2,160 patients in this study. ACAG had a better predictive value for 30 d all-cause mortality than AG, with an area under the curve of 0.66. The association between ACAG levels and overall mortality was nonlinear. In our model, after correcting for confounding factors, the ACAG was the independent predictor for 30 d all-cause mortality (HR 1.75, 95%CI 1.24, 2.47). ACAG K-M estimator curve analyses revealed that the group with ACAG ≥ 21.75 mmol/l had poor survival rate than the other group. CONCLUSIONS: High serum ACAG levels were a significant risk factor for 30 d all-cause mortality in critically ill patients with AMI. ACAG concentration and 30 d all-cause mortality had a nonlinear relationship. ACAG had better predictive value in identifying 30 d all-cause mortality of patients with AMI in ICU than the AG.

During the service period, asphalt materials are affected by various natural factors, including heat, ultraviolet light, oxygen and moisture, etc., resulting in the reduction of pavement performance, the increase of pavement distress and shortening of service life. This study aims to investigate the aging performance of asphalt under multiple aging conditions of heat, UV and aqueous solution. Thermal-oxygen aging, UV aging and hydrostatic erosion tests were carried out sequentially on asphalt. The rheological properties, chemical structure and element composition of asphalt were characterized before and after aging, and the effect mechanism of multiple conditions was discussed. The results show that the multiple conditions of heat and UV can increase the rutting resistance and weaken the cracking resistance of asphalt. However, the effect degree of UV decreases gradually with the deepening of aging degree. Additionally, the effect of water on the physicochemical properties is less than that of UV; however, water can increase the sensitivity of physicochemical properties to UV. In summary, this study explored the short-term cycling effect of heat, light and water on asphalt and provided an idea for simulation test of asphalt under multiple aging condition.

The use of steel slag powder instead of filler to prepare asphalt mortar was beneficial to realize the effective utilization of steel slag and improve the performance of asphalt concrete. Nevertheless, the anti-aging properties of steel-slag powder-asphalt mortar need to be further enhanced. This study used antioxidants and UV absorbers in steel-slag powder-asphalt mortar to simultaneously improve its thermal-oxidation and UV-aging properties. The dosage of modifier was optimized by second-generation non-inferior sorting genetic algorithm. Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, a dynamic shear rheometer and the heavy-metal-ion-leaching test were used to evaluate the characteristic functional groups, rheological properties and heavy-metal-toxicity characteristics of the steel-slag-powder-modified asphalt mortar, respectively. The results showed that there was a significant correlation between the amount of modifier and G*, δ, and the softening point. When the first peak appeared for G*, δ, and the softening point, the corresponding dosages of x1 were 2.15%, 1.0%, and 1.1%, respectively, while the corresponding dosage of x2 were 0.25%, 0.76%, and 0.38%, respectively. The optimal value of the modifier dosage x1 was 1.2% and x2 was 0.5% after weighing by the NSGA-II algorithm. The asphalt had a certain physical solid-sealing effect on the release of heavy-metal ions in the steel-slag powder. In addition, the asphalt structure was changed under the synergistic effect of oxygen and ultraviolet rays. Therefore, the risk of leaching heavy-metal ions was increased with the inferior asphalt-coating performance on the steel-slag powder.

Steel slag is the by-product of the steelmaking industry, the negative influences of which prompt more investigation into the recycling methods of steel slag. The purpose of this study is to characterize steel slag filler and study its feasibility of replacing limestone filler in asphalt concrete by evaluating the resistance of asphalt mastic under various aging methods. Firstly, steel slag filler, limestone filler, virgin asphalt, steel slag filler asphalt mastic and limestone filler asphalt mastic were prepared. Subsequently, particle size distribution, surface characterization and pore characterization of the fillers were evaluated. Finally, rheological property, self-healing property and chemical functional groups of the asphalt mastics with various aging methods were tested via dynamic shear rheometer and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer. The results show that there are similar particle size distributions, however, different surface characterization and pore characterization in the fillers. The analysis to asphalt mastics demonstrates how the addition of steel slag filler contributes to the resistance of asphalt mastic under the environment of acid and alkaline but is harmful under UV radiation especially. In addition, the pore structure in steel slag filler should be a potential explanation for the changing resistance of the asphalt mastics. In conclusion, steel slag filler is suggested to replace limestone filler under the environment of acid and alkaline, and environmental factor should be taken into consideration when steel slag filler is applied to replace natural fillers in asphalt mastic.

Steel slag, a by-product of steelmaking, imposes lots of negative impacts on the environment. For alleviating negative impacts, more and more experiments have been carried out to explore the application possibility of steel slag. The purpose of this study is to explore the feasibility of steel slag being applied in induction healing asphalt concretes to replace coarse and fine aggregate. Surface texture and pore sizes of steel slag were firstly tested, and then steel slag and basalt asphalt mixtures modified with steel fibers were prepared. Moisture susceptibility, dynamic stability, mechanical property, thermal property, induction heating speed, natural cooling speed and healing property of the asphalt mixtures were evaluated. Results showed that steel slags had more obvious holes in the surface while the surface area is much larger than that of basalt. Furthermore, steel fibers and steel slag both have dynamic stability, and steel fibers contribute to increased moisture resistance while steel slag is not. Steel slag asphalt concrete showed better mechanical property and better capacity to store heating. Steel slag asphalt mixtures had a similar heating speed to basalt asphalt mixtures but a significantly slower cooling rate. Finally, the induction healing test and CT scanning test demonstrated that steel slag asphalt mixtures had a similar healing ability to basalt asphalt mixtures. It can be concluded that steel slags have the potential to replace the natural aggregates to be applied in induction heating self-healing asphalt concretes.

The commonly used materials in fog seal are emulsified asphalt and modified emulsified asphalt. Nevertheless, there are some intractable problems including aging under ultraviolet, poor permeability, and moisture susceptibility. Therefore, silicone resin polymer was used as a kind of innovative fog seal material in this study. Physicochemical properties of solidified silicone resin were characterized. X-ray computed tomography and 3D reconstruction technology were used to evaluate permeability and distribution of silicone resin polymer in an asphalt mixture. Moisture sensitivity and high-temperature performance of the asphalt mixture maintained by silicone resin polymer were also detected. The results show that surface characteristic of silicone resin can effectively isolate moisture, thereby improving moisture resistance of the asphalt mixture. Silicone resin was found to be evenly distributed throughout the pores of a sample when the dosage was 400 or 600 mL/m2. The pore filling rate increased by 16.3% when the dosage was changed from 200 to 400 mL/m2, whereas it only increased by 3.7% when dosage increased from 400 to 600 mL/m2. Moisture damage resistance of asphalt mixtures generally increased as the dosage of silicone was increased. However, as the dosage increased from 400 to 600 mL/m2, the growth rate in residual Marshall stability (RMS) and tensile strength ratio (TSR) slowed significantly since the pore filling effect of silicone has reached the upper limit. Dosage of silicone resin has little effect on the results of the rutting test while it has significant influence on Hamburg wheel tracking test (HWT). Furthermore, it was found that 400 mL/m2 is the optimum silicone dosage for open-graded friction course (OGFC)-13 mixture in consideration of permeability, distribution, performance of mixture, and economic cost.

Induction heating is a valuable technology to repair asphalt concrete damage inside. However, in the process of induction heating, induced particles will release a large amount of heat to act on asphalt binder in a short time. The purpose of this paper was to study the effect of induction heating on asphalt binder aging in steel fibers modified asphalt concrete. The experiments were divided into two parts: induction heating of Dramix steel fibers coated with asphalt binder (DA) and steel wool fibers modified asphalt concrete. After induction heating, the asphalt binders in the samples were extracted for testing aging indices with Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR), and Four-Components Analysis (FCA) tests. The aging of asphalt binder was analyzed identifying the change of chemical structure, the diversification of rheological properties, and the difference of component. The experiments showed that the binder inside asphalt concrete began aging during induction heating due to thermal oxygen reaction and volatilization of light components. However, there was no peak value of the carbonyl index after induction heating of ten cycles, and the carbonyl index of DA was equivalent to that of binder in asphalt concrete after three induction heating cycles, which indicated the relatively closed environment inside asphalt concrete can inhibit the occurrence of the aging reaction.

Total body irradiation combined with cyclophosphamide (TBI/CY) and busulphan combined with cyclophosphamide (BU/CY) are standard conditioning regimens in hematological stem cell transplantation for patients with myelogenous leukemia. This study was aimed to compare the therapeutic efficacy of TBI/CY and BU/CY as conditioning regiment for acute or chronic myelogenous leukemia. The Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), MEDLINE, CNKI, CBM (Chinese Bio-medicine Database) had been searched for all relevant articles (1999-2007). Comparative studies were carried out on clinical therapeutic effects of TBI/CY and BU/CY including stem cell engraftment, relapse, complications, transplant-related mortality, and disease-free survival. A meta-analysis was performed using Review Manager 4.2 software and funnel plot regression was adopted to assess the publication bias. The results indicated that 2149 articles in English and 46 articles in Chinese were got, and finally 9 clinical trials with total 3039 patients have been assessed. No significantly difference was found in engraftment failure and transplant-related mortality resulting from TBI/CY and BU/CY conditioning regimens, but the incidence of veno-occlusion of liver and hemorrhagic cystitis obviously increased in BU/CY group after transplantation, the acute GVHD, interstitial pneumonia and cataract significantly increased in TBI/CY group. The relapse rate of AML in TBI/CY group was lower than that in BU/CY group, and the rate of long-term disease-free survival of AML patients in TBI/CY group also significantly lower than that in BU/CY group, but the relapse rate of CML in TBI/CY group after transplantation was obviously higher than that in BU/CY group, but there was no difference in longterm disease-free survival rate between the two conditioning regimens mentioned above. It is concluded that the meta-analysis confirms different effects of TBI/CY and BU/CY regimens on myelogenous leukemia transplantation. This result is useful for physicians to select treatment regimens.
