RESUMEN

"Can one hear the shape of a drum?" Kac raised this famous question in 1966, referring to the possibility of the existence of nonisometric planar domains with identical Dirichlet eigenvalue spectra of the Laplacian. Pairs of nonisometric isospectral billiards were eventually found by employing the transplantation method which was deduced from Sunada's theorem. Our main focus is the question to what extent isospectrality of nonrelativistic quantum billiards is present in the corresponding relativistic case, i.e., for massless spin-1/2 particles governed by the Dirac equation and confined to a domain of corresponding shape by imposing boundary conditions on the wave function components. We consider those for neutrino billiards [Berry and Mondragon, Proc. R. Soc. London A 412, 53 (1987)2053-916910.1098/rspa.1987.0080] and demonstrate that the transplantation method fails and thus isospectrality is lost when changing from the nonrelativistic to the relativistic case. To confirm this we compute the eigenvalues of pairs of neutrino billiards with the shapes of various billiards which are known to be isospectral in the nonrelativistic limit. Furthermore, we investigate their spectral properties, in particular, to find out whether not only their eigenvalues but also the fluctuations in their spectra and their length spectra differ.

Quantum chaos is referred to as the study of quantum manifestations or fingerprints of classical chaos. A vast majority of the studies were for nonrelativistic quantum systems described by the Schrödinger equation. Recent years have witnessed a rapid development of Dirac materials such as graphene and topological insulators, which are described by the Dirac equation in relativistic quantum mechanics. A new field has thus emerged: relativistic quantum chaos. This Tutorial aims to introduce this field to the scientific community. Topics covered include scarring, chaotic scattering and transport, chaos regularized resonant tunneling, superpersistent currents, and energy level statistics-all in the relativistic quantum regime. As Dirac materials have the potential to revolutionize solid-state electronic and spintronic devices, a good understanding of the interplay between chaos and relativistic quantum mechanics may lead to novel design principles and methodologies to enhance device performance.

We uncover a remarkable quantum scattering phenomenon in two-dimensional Dirac material systems where the manifestations of both classically integrable and chaotic dynamics emerge simultaneously and are electrically controllable. The distinct relativistic quantum fingerprints associated with different electron spin states are due to a physical mechanism analogous to a chiroptical effect in the presence of degeneracy breaking. The phenomenon mimics a chimera state in classical complex dynamical systems but here in a relativistic quantum setting-henceforth the term "Dirac quantum chimera," associated with which are physical phenomena with potentially significant applications such as enhancement of spin polarization, unusual coexisting quasibound states for distinct spin configurations, and spin selective caustics. Experimental observations of these phenomena are possible through, e.g., optical realizations of ballistic Dirac fermion systems.

We present a novel class of nonlinear dynamical systems-a hybrid of relativistic quantum and classical systems and demonstrate that multistability is ubiquitous. A representative setting is coupled systems of a topological insulator and an insulating ferromagnet, where the former possesses an insulating bulk with topologically protected, dissipationless, and conducting surface electronic states governed by the relativistic quantum Dirac Hamiltonian and the latter is described by the nonlinear classical evolution of its magnetization vector. The interactions between the two are essentially the spin transfer torque from the topological insulator to the ferromagnet and the local proximity induced exchange coupling in the opposite direction. The hybrid system exhibits a rich variety of nonlinear dynamical phenomena besides multistability such as bifurcations, chaos, and phase synchronization. The degree of multistability can be controlled by an external voltage. In the case of two coexisting states, the system is effectively binary, opening a door to exploitation for developing spintronic memory devices. Because of the dissipationless and spin-momentum locking nature of the surface currents of the topological insulator, little power is needed for generating a significant current, making the system appealing for potential applications in next generation of low power memory devices.

In this study, the polysaccharide from Polygonatum sibiricum (PSP) was evaluated for the immunomodulatory activity by the cyclophosphamide (Cy)-induced immunosuppressed-model in vivo. The PSP has been analyzed in order to identify a variety of chemical properties such as monosaccharide compositions and structural confirmation. The results show that the main components of PSP were galactose and rhamnose. The PSP could significantly stimulate neutral red phagocytosis of RAW264.7 macrophages. Compared with the cyclophosphamide group, PSP accelerated recovery of spleen and thymus indexes, and enhanced T cell and B cell proliferation responses as well as peritoneal macrophage phagocytosis. In addition, PSP treatment restored the levels of IL-2, TNF-α, IL-8 and IL-10 in the serum of the Cy-treated mice in a dose-dependent manner. Therefore, PSP played an important role in the protection against immunosuppression in the Cy-treated mice and could be used as a potential immunostimulant agent.

Diallyl trisulfide (DATS), a natural agent derived from garlic, has been tested for its antigastric cancer activities in various preliminary studies. However, more systematic pharmacodymatic (PD) and mechanistic evaluations are clearly needed. The aim of this study was to investigate the antitumor effects of DATS in the treatment of human gastric cancer cell SGC-7901 both in vitro and in vivo using widely recommended study procedures. DATS suppressed cancer cells proliferation and induced cell cycle arrest accompanied by an increase in the expressions of cyclin A2 and cyclin B1 in SGC-7901 cancer cells. DATS also caused an increase in apoptotic cell death, which involved in accumulations of bax, p53, and cytochrome C and reduction of Bcl-2 expressions. Besides, activation of JNK, ERK and p38 phosphorylation in DATS-treated cells suggested that mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPKs) pathways were involved in DATS-induced apoptosis. Meanwhile, DATS significantly inhibited tumor growth and promoted tumor apoptosis in a xenograft model of gastric cancer cell SGC-7901. DATS inhibited tumor migration and invasion by modulating MMP9 and E-cadherin protein expressions. In addition, DATS treatment evidently increased the cytokine secretions of IL-12, TNF-α and IFN-γ (p<0.05). Biochemical serum analysis and histopathological examination indicated no obvious side effects in major mouse organs. Therefore, our findings provide a framework for further exploration of DATS as a novel chemotherapeutic for human gastric cancer.

Diallyl trisulfide (DATS), a garlic organosulfide, has shown excellent chemopreventive potential. Cisplatin (DDP) is widely used to treat solid malignant tumors, but causing serious side effects. In the current study, we attempted to elucidate the chemopreventive mechanisms of DATS in human gastric cancer BGC-823 cells in vitro, and to investigate whether DATS could enhance the anti-tumor efficacy of DDP and improve quality of life in BGC-823 xenograft mice in vivo. Treatment with DATS (25-400 µmol/L) dose-dependently inhibited the viability of BGC-823 cells in vitro with an IC50 of 115.2±4.3 µmol/L after 24 h drug exposure. DATS (50-200 µmol/L) induced cell cycle arrest at G2/M phase in BGC-823 cells, which correlated with significant accumulation of cyclin A2 and B1. DATS also induced BGC-823 cell apoptosis, which was accompanied by the modulation of Bcl-2 family members and caspase cascade activation. In BGC-823 xenograft mice, administration of DATS (20-40 mg·kg-1·d-1, ip) dose-dependently inhibited tumor growth and markedly reduced the number of Ki-67 positive cells in tumors. Interestingly, combined administration of DATS (30 mg·kg-1·d-1, ip) with DDP (5 mg/kg, every 5 d, ip) exhibited enhanced anti-tumor activity with fewer side effects. We showed that treatment of BGC-823 cells with DATS in vitro and in vivo significantly activated kinases such as p38 and JNK/MAPK and attenuated the Nrf2/Akt pathway. This study provides evidence that DATS exerts anticancer effects and enhances the antitumor efficacy of DDP, making it a novel candidate for adjuvant therapy for gastric cancer.

Diallyl trisulfide (DATS), an organosulfuric component of garlic oil, exhibits potential anticancer and chemopreventive effects. Cisplatin (DDP), a common chemotherapeutic agent, has provided great therapeutic contributions to treating solid tumors, but with serious side effects. Here, we verified the anti-tumor properties of DATS on lung cancer in vitro and in vivo, and evaluated synergistic effects of DATS combined with DDP on the NCI-H460 xenograft model. Significantly decreased cell viabilities, cell cycle G1 arrest, and apoptosis induction were observed in DATS treated NCI-H460 cells (p<0.05). And injection of DATS (30 or 40 mg/kg) to female Balb/c mice significantly inhibited the growth of human NCI-H460 cell tumor xenograft (p<0.001). Moreover, DATS in combination with DDP exhibited enhanced anti-tumor activity via induction of apoptosis. Apoptosis pathways were confirmed by modulation of p53, Bcl-2 family members; induction of active caspase-3/8/9 and activation of JNK- and p38-MAPK pathways. Interestedly, DATS+DDP administration exerted fewer side effects, such as suppressing the weight loss and ameliorating DDP-induced oxidative injury, especially in renal parenchyma. In addition, increased E-cadherin and decreased MMP-9 expression levels were observed in DATS-treated tumor tissues. These studies provide supports that DATS might be a potential candidate for combination with DDP in cancer treatment.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Traditional Chinese medicine Yifei Tongluo Granules has been employed clinically with the combination of chemotherapy agents to treat patients with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis. However, the mechanisms underlying the therapeutic potential have not been well elucidated. The present study was employed to verify immunomodulatory effect and to investigate the underlying mechanisms which have not been explored. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study samples of total extracts (FB-E) and polysaccharides (FB-P) were prepared by the extraction of the Yifei Tongluo Granules using appropriate techniques. A simple immunodeficient mice model was established by challenging Balb/c mice with cyclophosphamide in order to avoid the handling of tuberculosis viruses. The in vivo study was thus designed to systematically elucidate the immuno-enhancement effects of Yifei Tongluo Granules extracts in immunosuppressed mice induced by cyclophosphamide. Balb/c mice were orally ingested once daily with the low and high doses of two different extracts for ten consecutive days, respectively, accompanied by intraperitoneal injection of cyclophosphamide (60mg/kg) on days 1-3 and 10. RESULTS: Compared with the model group, the treatment of immunodeficient mice with the low and high doses of the extracts FB-E or FB-P enhanced spleen and thymus indices, T- and B-cell proliferation as well as increased the activities of splenic natural killer, lymphokine activated killer, cytotoxic T lymphocyte cells and peritoneal macrophage phagocytosis. In addition, the FB-E or FB-P treatment balanced the ratio of Th1/Th2 and up-regulated the CD4+/CD8+ ratio in the serum. CONCLUSIONS: These results demonstrate, for the first time, that the treatment of the cyclophosphamide-challenged mice with the Yifei Tongluo Granules extracts resulted in accelerated recovery of immunosuppression, sugguesting that the immunomodulation might be the mechanism for the observed clinical benefits of Yifei Tongluo Granules. Our findings provide preliminary mechanistic study evidences for clinical application of Yifei Tongluo Granules in patients with immunodeficient diseases such as tuberculosis.

We uncover an alternative mechanism for anomalous Hall effect. In particular, we investigate the magnetisation dynamics of an insulating ferromagnet (FM) deposited on the surface of a three-dimensional topological insulator (TI), subject to an external voltage. The spin-polarised current on the TI surface induces a spin-transfer torque on the magnetisation of the top FM while its dynamics can change the transmission probability of the surface electrons through the exchange coupling and hence the current. We find a host of nonlinear dynamical behaviors including multistability, chaos, and phase synchronisation. Strikingly, a dynamics mediated Hall-like current can arise, which exhibits a nontrivial dependence on the channel conductance. We develop a physical understanding of the mechanism that leads to the anomalous Hall effect. The nonlinear dynamical origin of the effect stipulates that a rich variety of final states exist, implying that the associated Hall current can be controlled to yield desirable behaviors. The phenomenon can find applications in Dirac-material based spintronics.

A crucial result in quantum chaos, which has been established for a long time, is that the spectral properties of classically integrable systems generically are described by Poisson statistics, whereas those of time-reversal symmetric, classically chaotic systems coincide with those of random matrices from the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble (GOE). Does this result hold for two-dimensional Dirac material systems? To address this fundamental question, we investigate the spectral properties in a representative class of graphene billiards with shapes of classically integrable circular-sector billiards. Naively one may expect to observe Poisson statistics, which is indeed true for energies close to the band edges where the quasiparticle obeys the Schrödinger equation. However, for energies near the Dirac point, where the quasiparticles behave like massless Dirac fermions, Poisson statistics is extremely rare in the sense that it emerges only under quite strict symmetry constraints on the straight boundary parts of the sector. An arbitrarily small amount of imperfection of the boundary results in GOE statistics. This implies that, for circular-sector confinements with arbitrary angle, the spectral properties will generically be GOE. These results are corroborated by extensive numerical computation. Furthermore, we provide a physical understanding for our results.

Persistent currents (PCs), one of the most intriguing manifestations of the Aharonov-Bohm (AB) effect, are known to vanish for Schrödinger particles in the presence of random scatterings, e.g., due to classical chaos. But would this still be the case for Dirac fermions? Addressing this question is of significant value due to the tremendous recent interest in two-dimensional Dirac materials. We investigate relativistic quantum AB rings threaded by a magnetic flux and find that PCs are extremely robust. Even for highly asymmetric rings that host fully developed classical chaos, the amplitudes of PCs are of the same order of magnitude as those for integrable rings, henceforth the term superpersistent currents (SPCs). A striking finding is that the SPCs can be attributed to a robust type of relativistic quantum states, i.e., Dirac whispering gallery modes (WGMs) that carry large angular momenta and travel along the boundaries. We propose an experimental scheme using topological insulators to observe and characterize Dirac WGMs and SPCs, and speculate that these features can potentially be the base for a new class of relativistic qubit systems. Our discovery of WGMs in relativistic quantum systems is remarkable because, although WGMs are common in photonic systems, they are relatively rare in electronic systems.

The 70-kilodalton (kDa) heat-shock proteins (Hsp70s) are ubiquitous molecular chaperones essential for cellular protein folding and proteostasis. Each Hsp70 has two functional domains: a nucleotide-binding domain (NBD), which binds and hydrolyzes ATP, and a substrate-binding domain (SBD), which binds extended polypeptides. NBD and SBD interact little when in the presence of ADP; however, ATP binding allosterically couples the polypeptide- and ATP-binding sites. ATP binding promotes polypeptide release; polypeptide rebinding stimulates ATP hydrolysis. This allosteric coupling is poorly understood. Here we present the crystal structure of an intact ATP-bound Hsp70 from Escherichia coli at 1.96-Å resolution. The ATP-bound NBD adopts a unique conformation, forming extensive interfaces with an SBD that has changed radically, having its α-helical lid displaced and the polypeptide-binding channel of its ß-subdomain restructured. These conformational changes, together with our biochemical assays, provide a structural explanation for allosteric coupling in Hsp70 activity.

Do relativistic quantum scars in classically chaotic systems possess unique features that are not shared by nonrelativistic quantum scars? We report a class of relativistic quantum scars in massless Dirac fermion systems whose phases return to the original values or acquire a 2π change only after circulating twice about some classical unstable periodic orbits. We name such scars chiral scars, the successful identification of which has been facilitated tremendously by our development of an analytic, conformal-mapping-based method to calculate an unprecedentedly large number of eigenstates with high accuracy. Our semiclassical theory indicates that the physical origin of chiral scars can be attributed to a combined effect of chirality intrinsic to massless Dirac fermions and the geometry of the underlying classical orbit.
