RESUMEN

Joint hypermobility (JH) conditions suggest dysfunction in the autonomic nervous system (ANS) (dysautonomia), associated with multifactor non-articular local musculoskeletal pain, and remains a complex treatment. This study aims to determine the effects of musculoskeletal interfiber counterirritant stimulation (MICS) as an innovative treatment of myofascial trigger points (MTrPs) on the upper trapezius muscle in JH patients. We evaluate the ANS activity by wavelet transform spectral analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) in sixty women, equally divided: MTrP, MTrP + general joint hypermobility (GJH), and MTrP + joint hypermobility syndrome (JHS). The protocol phases were rest, stimulation, and recovery, with clinical and home treatment for three-days. All groups show a significantly decreased in pain perception during and post-treatment, and an increased parasympathetic ANS activity under MICS in the GJH and JHS groups. The variables low-frequency (LF) vs. high-frequency (HF) showed significant differences during the protocol phases, and the LF/HF ratio maintained a predominance of sympathetic activity (SA) throughout the protocol. The new MICS technique reduces the pain perception and modulates the ANS activity by an increase in vagal tone, and a decrease in sympathetic tone. This modulation was followed by an increase in the HRV in JH patients after treatment with MICS. Clinical Trials: RBR-88z25c5.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: To determine the effects of a low dose, short-term Creatine monohydrate (Cr) supplementation (0.03 g.kg.d-1 during 14 d) on muscle power output in elite youth soccer players. METHODS: Using a two-group matched, double blind, placebo-controlled design, nineteen male soccer players (mean age = 17.0 ± 0.5 years) were randomly assigned to either Cr (N = 9) or placebo (N = 10) group. Before and after supplementation, participants performed a 30s Wingate Anaerobic Test (WAnT) to assess peak power output (PPO), mean power output (MPO), fatigue index (FI), and total work. RESULTS: There were significant increases in both PPO and MPO after the Cr supplementation period (P ≤ 0.05) but not the placebo period. There were also significant increases in total work, but not FI, after the Cr supplementation and placebo periods (P ≤ 0.05). Notably, there were differences in total work between the Cr and placebo groups after (P ≤ 0.05) but not before the 14 d supplementation period. CONCLUSION: There is substantial evidence to indicate that a low-dose, short-term oral Cr supplementation beneficially affected muscle power output in elite youth soccer players.

RESUMEN

Objectives: To compare parameters of physical activity (PA) among school age adolescents of both sexes and propose evaluation curves to estimate physical activity levels in students of an educational establishment of the Municipality of Talca, Chile. Subjects and methods: The type of study was descriptive-comparative. 1448 adolescent students (749 women and 699 men) from the municipal School of Excellence "Abate Molina" in Talca were studied. Age range was 12.0 to 18.9years. Physical activity was assessed by a questionnaire including 11 questions. The LMS method was used to estimate centiles valuation ranging from p3, p10, p25, p50, p75, p90 and p97. Results: The questionnaire showed a Cronbach's alpha of r = 0.82 in men and r = 0.79 in women. Males achieved a score of28.46 ± 6.88 and women 23.88 ± 5.69. The breakpoints adopted for levels of physical activity are:

Objectives: To determine physical growth parameters and to assess nutritional status of school adolescents. Design: Descriptive comparative study. Institution: Liceo Naval Admiral Lizardo Montero, Lima, Peru. Participants: Adolescents aged 12-15 years. Interventions: A non-probability selection of 501 school children of both sexes (251 men and 250 women) was done. Variables determined included weight and height. Mean, standard deviation, percentages, t-test for independent samples and paired (p <0.05) and chi-square (p<0.05) analysis were done. Main outcome measures: Variables of growth and nutritional status. Results: Compared to international references, there were no significant differences (p <0.05) in weight and height by sex in adolescents. The nutritional status showed higher proportion of well nourished subjects (74.5 per cent in men and 75.6 per cent in women) compared with low birth weight (2 per cent in men, 0.8 per cent in women), overweight (16.3 per cent in men and 20.4 in women) and obesity (7.2 per cent in men and 3.2 per cent in women). Conclusions: Physical growth pattern was similar to international reference values but the high prevalence of overweight in both sexes suggests a public health problem.
