Zeugodacus cucurbitae (Coquillett) is an important fruit and vegetable pest, especially in high-temperature seasons. In our previous research, we developed a temperature-sensitive sustained-release attractant for Z. cucurbitae, that not only can control the release rate of cuelure according to the temperature change, but also shows an excellent trapping effect on Z. cucurbitae. To further enhance the killing effect of the temperature-sensitive attractant on Z. cucurbitae, this study proposed using it in combination with an insecticide to prepare a temperature-sensitive insecticide for Z. cucurbitae. Based on the controlled release technology of pesticides, a temperature-sensitive Z. cucurbitae insecticide was developed by using PNIPAM gel as a temperature-sensitive switch to carry both cuelure and insecticide at the same time. In addition, the lethal effect of different pesticides on Z. cucurbitae were tested by indoor toxicity test, and the best pesticide combination was screened out. The temperature-sensitive insecticide prepared in this study not only had excellent thermal response and controlled release ability, but also enhanced its toxicological effects on Z. cucurbitae because it contained insecticides. Among them, combining thiamethoxam and clothianidin with the temperature-sensitive attractants was the most effective, and their lethality reached more than 97% against Z. cucurbitae. This study is not only of great practical significance for the monitoring and controlling Z. cucurbitae, but also provides theoretical basis and reference value for the combination of temperature-sensitive attractant and insecticide.

BACKGROUND: Unintended (unwanted) pregnancy is a sexual and reproductive health issue with psychosocial consequences for the individual, their family, and society. However, the relationship between social support and related mental health issues, like depression and the effects of childhood adversity, is poorly studied. This study aims to explore the connections between childhood adversity, perceived social support, and depressive symptoms in pre-abortion women (women who have decided to have an abortion) in a clinical setting, based on the common risk factor approach and social support theory. METHODS: A total of 299 pre-abortion Chinese women 18-45 years were recruited in a hospital in Shantou, China. Hierarchical linear regression analyses were employed to examine the relative effects of childhood adversity and sources of social support on depressive symptoms, controlling for sociodemographic influences. RESULTS: The results show that 37.2 percent of participants reported at least one adverse experience in childhood. More than half of the respondents were at risk for depression. Results of regression analysis showed that childhood adversities were negatively associated with depressive symptoms before sources of social support were entered into the model. However, when the sources of perceived social support were added, the effect of childhood adversity was not significant. Perceived social support explained the additional 15 percent variance in depressive symptoms. Additionally, being married (ß = -.12, p < .05) and number of siblings (ß = .13, p < .05) were significantly related to depressive symptoms. DISCUSSION: Pre-abortion women are at risk of mental health problems. Peer and familial social supports can alleviate the influence of childhood adversity on depression among pre-abortion Chinese women. Strengthening the role of various sources of social support can help to improve the mental health conditions of pre-abortion women.

INTRODUCTION: Smoking prevalence is high in China, and healthcare workers are important for tobacco control. This study aimed to determine the smoking status, cognition of tobacco hazards, and smoking cessation-related knowledge among respiratory healthcare workers, and to explore their ability to provide smoking cessation assistance. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2021 among 1028 respiratory healthcare workers from 89 hospitals in Fujian Province, China. A self-designed electronic questionnaire was used to collect data on smoking status, knowledge of smoking hazards, and smoking cessation knowledge. Descriptive statistics were calculated for all questions. Logistic regression analysis was used to explore the relationship between awareness of the tobacco control goals of Healthy China 2030 and demographic characteristics. RESULTS: Among the healthcare workers surveyed, 3.4% were smokers, all of whom were male. Most respondents (99.4%) were aware of smoking as a cause of lung cancer, but awareness of smoking as a cause of non-respiratory cancer was lower. The awareness rate of smoking cessation support was high (>90%), but only 40.0% of participants were aware of the Healthy China 2030 tobacco control targets. Male (HR=2.16; 95% CI: 1.69-2.80) and participation in the cessation clinic (HR=1.47; 95% CI: 1.10-1.96) were associated with higher awareness of the targets. CONCLUSIONS: Respiratory healthcare workers in Fujian Province demonstrated a high level of awareness regarding behavioral and pharmacotherapy support for smoking cessation. In order to enable healthcare workers to play a more active role in tobacco control, there is a need to increase public awareness of smoking cessation services in Fujian Province.

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia pneumoniae (Cpn) IgG and IgA has been strongly linked to lung cancer, but its impact on patients' quality of life remains unclear. Our objective was to investigate the relationship between pre-treatment Cpn IgG and IgA and time to deterioration (TTD) of the HRQoL in patients with primary lung cancer. METHODS: A prospective hospital-based study was conducted from June 2017 to December 2018, enrolling 82 patients with primary lung cancer admitted to the First Affiliated Hospital of Fujian Medical University for questionnaire surveys. Cpn IgG and IgA was detected by microimmunofluorescence method. HRQoL was assessed at baseline and during follow-up using the EORTC Quality of Life Questionnaire version 3.0 (EORTC QLQ-C30) and EORTC Quality of Life Questionnaire-Lung Cancer (EORTC QLQ-LC13). HRQoL scores were calculated using the QoLR package, and TTD events were determined (minimum clinically significant difference = 5 points). Cox regression analysis was used to evaluate the effect of Cpn IgG and IgA on HRQoL. RESULTS: We investigated the relationship between Cpn IgG and IgA and quality of life in patients with primary lung cancer. The study was found that 75.61% of cases were Cpn IgG + and 45.12% were Cpn IgA + . Cpn IgA + IgG + was 41.46%. For EORTC QLQ-C30, Physical function (PF) and Pain (PA) TTD events on the functional scale and Symptom scale were the most common during follow-up. After adjusting for gender and smoking status, Pre-treatment Cpn IgA + was found to signifcantly delay TTD of Physical functioning(HR = 0.539, 95% CI: 0.291-0.996, P = 0.048). In addition, Cpn IgG + before treatment significantly delayed TTD in Emotional functioning (HR = 0.310, 95% CI: 0.115-0.836, P = 0.021). For EORTC QLQ-LC13, deterioration of dyspnea (LC-DY) was the most common event. However, Cpn IgG and IgA before treatment had no effect on the TTD of EORTC QLQ-LC13 items. CONCLUSIONS: According to EORTC QLQ-C30 and EORTC QLQ-LC13, Cpn IgA delayed TTD in Physical functioning and Cpn IgG delayed TTD in Emotional functioning.

Duane retraction syndrome (DRS) is a rare congenital eye movement disorder causing by the dysplasia of abducens nerve, and has highly variable phenotype. MRI can reveal the endophenotype of DRS. Most DRS cases are sporadical and isolated, while some are familial or accompanied by other ocular disorders and systemic congenital abnormalities. CHN1 was the most common causative gene for familial DRS. Until now, 13 missense variants of CHN1 have been reported. In this study, we enrolled two unrelated pedigrees with DRS. Detailed clinical examinations, MRI, and the whole exome sequencing (WES) were performed to reveal their clinical and genetic characteristics. Patients from pedigree-1 presented with isolated DRS, and a novel heterozygous variant c.650 A > G, p. His217Arg was identified in CHN1 gene. Patients from pedigree-2 presented with classic DRS and abnormalities in auricle morphology, and the pedigree segregated another novel heterozygous CHN1 variant c.637 T > C, p. Phe213Leu. A variety of bioinformatics software predicted that the two variants had deleterious or disease-causing effects. After injecting of two mutant CHN1 mRNAs into zebrafish embryos, the dysplasia of ocular motor nerves (OMN) was observed. Our present findings expanded the phenotypic and genotypic spectrum of CHN1 related DRS, as well as provided new insights into the role of CHN1 in OMN development. Genetic testing is strongly recommended for patients with a DRS family history or accompanying systemic congenital abnormalities.

Nkx2.3, a transcription factor, plays important roles in various developmental processes. However, the mechanisms underlying nkx2.3's regulation of pouch and pharyngeal arch development in zebrafish remain unclear. In this study, we demonstrated that knockdown or knockout of nkx2.3 resulted in the absence of posterior ceratobranchial cartilages in zebrafish. The absence of posterior pharyngeal cartilages is a consequence of the compromised proliferation and differentiation and survival of cranial neural crest cells (CNCCs). Notably, we found that nkx2.3 was not involved in endoderm pouch formation. Additionally, our findings suggested that nkx2.3 negatively regulated Fibroblast growth factor (Fgf) signaling, as overexpression of fgf8 could mimic the phenotype observed in nkx2.3 morphants, suppressing CNCC differentiation. Moreover, inhibiting Fgf signaling restored the abnormalities in posterior cartilages induced by nkx2.3 knockdown. These findings establish the essential role of nkx2.3 in the development of posterior ceratobranchial cartilages through the inhibition of fgf8.

Adducin 1 (Add1) is known as a membrane cytoskeletal protein, but its nuclear function remains unclear. In this study, we generated add1-deficient zebrafish to investigate its role in hematopoiesis. Lack of add1 impaired both primitive and definitive hematopoiesis, preventing healthy erythrocyte development. RNA sequencing revealed activation of the p53 pathway in add1-depleted erythroblast cells, leading to apoptosis at the 14-somites stage and 24 hpf. Interestingly, partial rescue of the anemic phenotype and apoptosis was observed with p53 insufficiency. Mechanistically, ADD1 was found to regulate promoter activity. These findings demonstrate that Add1 plays a crucial role in zebrafish erythropoiesis, involving the p53-mediated apoptotic pathway, expanding its regulatory role beyond cytoskeletal functions.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Pancreatic fibrosis is the hallmark of chronic pancreatitis (CP), which is associated with microcirculatory disturbance. Dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) can assess the perfusion and permeability of the pancreas by providing information about microcirculation. We hypothesize that DCE-MRI parameters can be utilized to assess pancreatic fibrosis and may furthermore provide an opportunity to evaluate response to antifibrotic treatment with curcumin. Our study was to evaluate the feasibility of quantitative DCE-MRI in assessing pancreatic fibrosis and the antifibrotic effect of curcumin in a rat model of CP. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Pancreatic fibrosis was induced by injecting dibutyltin dichloride (DBTC). Seventy rats were randomized to five groups: the control group (n = 10); DBTC for 2 weeks (n = 15); DBTC for 4 weeks (n = 15); DBTC + curcumin for 2 weeks (n = 15); DBTC + curcumin for 4 weeks (n = 15). DCE-MRI was performed at an 11.7 T MR scanner. DCE-MRI quantitative parameters (Ktrans, Ve, and Vp) were derived from an extended Tofts model. Fibrosis content and DCE-MRI parameters were compared among the above groups (one-way analysis of variance). The correlations between DCE-MRI parameters and pancreatic fibrosis content as well as the expression of α-SMA were computed by Spearman correlation coefficients. RESULTS: Fifty-three rats survived and underwent MR imaging. Ktrans in rats 4 weeks after DBTC injection was significantly lower than DBTC 2 weeks rats and control rats (0.30 ± 0.06 min vs 0.49 ± 0.09 vs 0.62 ± 0.09, respectively). Vp in DBTC 4 weeks rats was also significantly lower than control rats (0.048 ± 0.010 min-1 vs 0.065 ± 0.011 min-1, respectively). Ktrans and Vp significantly correlated with fibrosis content of pancreas (r = -0.619 and -0.450, all P < 0.001), and the expression of α-SMA (r = -0.688 and -0.402, all P < 0.01). Ktrans and Vp in rats with daily curcumin treatment for 4 weeks were significantly higher than DBTC 4 weeks rats (Ktrans, 0.51 ± 0.09 vs 0.30 ± 0.06; Vp, 0.064 ± 0.015 vs 0.048 ± 0.010). CONCLUSION: DCE-MRI parameters (Ktrans and Vp) have the potential to noninvasively assess pancreatic fibrosis and the antifibrotic treatment response of curcumin.

INTRODUCTION: Vascular neointimal hyperplasia, a pathological process observed in cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis and pulmonary hypertension, involves the abundant presence of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). The proliferation, migration, and autophagy of VSMCs are associated with the development of neointimal lesions. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) play critical roles in regulating VSMC proliferation and migration, thereby participating in neointimal hyperplasia. However, the regulatory roles of circRNAs in VSMC autophagy remain unclear. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to identify circRNAs that are involved in VSMC autophagy-mediated neointimal hyperplasia, as well as elucidate the underlying mechanisms. METHODS: Dual-luciferase reporter gene assay was performed to validate two competing endogenous RNA axes, hsa_circ_0001402/miR-183-5p/FKBP prolyl isomerase like (FKBPL) and hsa_circ_0001402/miR-183-5p/beclin 1 (BECN1). Cell proliferation and migration analyses were employed to investigate the effects of hsa_circ_0001402, miR-183-5p, or FKBPL on VSMC proliferation and migration. Cell autophagy analysis was conducted to reveal the role of hsa_circ_0001402 or miR-183-5p on VSMC autophagy. The role of hsa_circ_0001402 or miR-183-5p on neointimal hyperplasia was evaluated using a mouse model of common carotid artery ligation. RESULTS: Hsa_circ_0001402 acted as a sponge for miR-183-5p, leading to the suppression of miR-183-5p expression. Through direct interaction with the coding sequence (CDS) of FKBPL, miR-183-5p promoted VSMC proliferation and migration by decreasing FKBPL levels. Besides, miR-183-5p reduced BECN1 levels by targeting the 3'-untranslated region (UTR) of BECN1, thus inhibiting VSMC autophagy. By acting as a miR-183-5p sponge, overexpression of hsa_circ_0001402 increased FKBPL levels to inhibit VSMC proliferation and migration, while simultaneously elevating BECN1 levels to activate VSMC autophagy, thereby alleviating neointimal hyperplasia. CONCLUSION: Hsa_circ_0001402, acting as a miR-183-5p sponge, increases FKBPL levels to inhibit VSMC proliferation and migration, while enhancing BECN1 levels to activate VSMC autophagy, thus alleviating neointimal hyperplasia. The hsa_circ_0001402/miR-183-5p/FKBPL axis and hsa_circ_0001402/miR-183-5p/BECN1 axis may offer potential therapeutic targets for neointimal hyperplasia.

Closure of the neural tube represents a highly complex and coordinated process, the failure of which constitutes common birth defects. The serine/threonine kinase p21-activated kinase 2 (PAK2) is a critical regulator of cytoskeleton dynamics; however, its role in the neurulation and pathogenesis of neural tube defects (NTDs) remains unclear. Here, the results show that Pak2-/- mouse embryos fail to develop dorsolateral hinge points (DLHPs) and exhibit craniorachischisis, a severe phenotype of NTDs. Pak2 knockout activates BMP signaling that involves in vertebrate bone formation. Single-cell transcriptomes reveal abnormal differentiation trajectories and transcriptional events in Pak2-/- mouse embryos during neural tube development. Two nonsynonymous and one recurrent splice-site mutations in the PAK2 gene are identified in five human NTD fetuses, which exhibit attenuated PAK2 expression and upregulated BMP signaling in the brain. Mechanistically, PAK2 regulates Smad9 phosphorylation to inhibit BMP signaling and ultimately induce DLHP formation. Depletion of pak2a in zebrafish induces defects in the neural tube, which are partially rescued by the overexpression of wild-type, but not mutant PAK2. The findings demonstrate the conserved role of PAK2 in neurulation in multiple vertebrate species, highlighting the molecular pathogenesis of PAK2 mutations in NTDs.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE : Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is a key aspect of care for cancer survivors that can be improved by physical activity. Our aim was to explore the relationship between physical activity and time to deterioration (TTD) of the HRQoL in patients with lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD). METHODS: We conducted a hospital-based prospective study. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire long-form (IPAQ-L) was used to investigate the pre-treatment physical activity levels, and the EORTC Quality of Life Questionnaire version 3.0 (EORTC QLQ-C30) and EORTC Quality of Life Questionnaire-Lung Cancer (EORTC QLQ-LC13) were used to assess HRQoL at baseline and during follow-up. The QoLR package was used to calculate the HRQoL scores and determine TTD events (minimal clinically important difference=5 points). The effect of physical activity on the HRQoL was assessed using Cox regression analysis. RESULTS: For EORTC QLQ-C30, TTD events of physical functioning (PF) and dyspnea (DY) in functional scales and symptom scales were the most common during follow-up. Pre-treatment physical activity was found to significantly delay TTD of insomnia (HR=0.635, 95%CI: 0.437-0.922, P=0.017) and diarrhea (HR=0.475, 95%CI: 0.291-0.774, P=0.003). For EORTC QLQ-LC13 scales, deterioration of dyspnea (LC-DY) was the most common event. Physical activity was found to delay the TTD of dyspnea (HR=0.654, 95%CI: 0.474-0.903, P=0.010), sore mouth (HR=0.457, 95%CI: 0.244-0.856, P=0.015), and dysphagia (HR=0.315, 95%CI: 0.172-0.580, P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Pre-treatment physical activity of LUAD patients may delay the TTD of multiple HRQoL indicators in EORTC QLQ-C30 and EORTC QLQ-LC13. IMPLICATION FOR CANCER SURVIVORS: Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is a key aspect of care for cancer survivors (someone who is living with or beyond cancer), that can be improved by physical activity. Our aim was to explore the relationship between physical activity and time to deterioration (TTD) of the HRQoL in patients with lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD).

Climate change affects the population distribution of pests and their natural enemies, and predicting these effects is necessary for pest monitoring and green control. Lipaphis erysimi is an important vegetable pest, and its natural enemy, the Eupeodes corollae Fabricius has a strong predatory effect on the L. erysimi. To assess the spread trends of L. erysimi and its natural enemy, the hoverfly, E. corollae under current (1970-2000) and future climates (2041-2060), based on the MaxEnt model, this paper uses data on the geographical distribution of the historical occurrence of L. erysimi and E. corollae to speculate on their potential distribution areas worldwide and analyze the key environmental factors affecting the survival and spread of both. The results showed that the Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 2.6 and RCP4.5 climatic conditions are favorable for the spread of L. erysimi, the RCP8.5 climatic conditions are unfavorable for the spread of L. erysimi, and all three future climatic conditions are unfavorable for the spread of E. corollae. The highest fitness of L. erysimi was found at the annual average temperature of 18 °C and the annual average precipitation of 900 mm, while the highest fitness of E. corollae was found at the annual average temperature of 10 °C and the lowest temperature in the coldest month of 0 °C. This study can provide a reference basis for monitoring and early warning and biological control of L. erysimi.

The harm of agricultural pests presents a remarkable effect on the quality and safety of edible farm products and the monitoring and identification of agricultural pests based on the Internet of Things (IoT) produce a large amount of data to be transmitted. To achieve efficient and real-time transmission of the sensors' data for pest monitoring, this paper selects 235 geographic coordinates of agricultural pest monitoring points and uses genetic algorithm (GA), particle swarm optimization (PSO), and simulated annealing (SA) to optimize the data transmission paths of sensors. The three intelligent algorithms are simulated by MATLAB software. The results show that the optimized path based on PSO can make the shortest time used for transmitting data, and its corresponding minimum time is 4.868012 s. This study can provide a reference for improving the transmission efficiency of agricultural pest monitoring data, provide a guarantee for developing real-time and effective pest control strategies, and further reduce the threat of pest damage to the safety of farm products.

Climate change has increased the frequency of extreme heat events. Zeugodacus cucurbitae (Coquillett) is an important tropical pest that typically changes its reproductive strategies in response to extremely high temperatures. Newly emerged adults of three consecutive generations (F1, F2, and F3) of Z. cucurbitae (Coquillett) were exposed to 25°C, 33°C, 37°C, 41°C, and 45°C treatments for 1 h to clarify the effects of short-term high temperatures on its reproduction. The influence of these temperatures on reproduction was evaluated using indicators, such as egg number. Newly emerged adults were exposed to 25°C and 45°C treatments for 1 h, and the expression of Vitellogenin receptor (VgR) gene in females was interfered with siRNA, and silencing efficiency of RNAi was evaluated. Results showed that short-term high temperatures, except for F1 treated at 45°C for 1 h to stimulate oviposition, exert a general adverse effect on the reproduction of Z. cucurbitae (Coquillett). All F3 died after the 45°C treatment for 1 h. Silencing of the VgR gene resulted in the significant downregulation of VgR gene expression at both 24 and 72 h. The egg number, oviposition days, and hatchability of eggs were significantly lower than those of other treatment groups after interference, and the inhibition effect of egg number was the most evident, with a decrease of 88.4% and 95.2% at 25°C and 45°C, respectively, compared with that of the Control Check (CK). Ovarian development speed and diameter were also significantly lower than those of other treatment groups after the interference. The results of this study can provide a theoretical reference for the integrated control of Z. cucurbitae (Coquillett) during high-temperature seasons.

OBJECTIVES: The molecular mechanistic actions of tumor-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) in modulating macrophage polarization in the tumor microenvironment of epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) is largely unknown. The study was performed to clarify the effect and downstream mechanism of microRNA-181c-5p (miR-181c-5p)-containing EVs from EOC cells in the M2 polarization of tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs). METHODS: EVs were isolated from normoxic and hypoxic human EOC cells SKOV3. Human mononuclear cell THP-1 was induced by phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate to differentiate into TAMs. The targeting relationship between miR-181c-5p and KAT2B was verified by dual luciferase reporter gene assay. The interaction between KAT2B and HOXA10 was detected by immunofluorescence, Co-IP and ChIP assays. EdU staining, the scratch test and Transwell assay were used to assess the resultant cell proliferation, migration and invasion. The mouse xenograft model and the pulmonary metastasis model were developed through intraperitoneal injection of SKOV3 cells and tail vein injection of THP-1 cells, respectively. RESULTS: Hypoxic SKOV3 cell-derived EVs could be internalized by TAMs. SKOV3 cell-derived EVs induced by hypoxia (H-EVs) promoted M2 polarization of TAMs and facilitated the proliferation, migration and invasion of SKOV3 cells. miR-181c-5p was highly expressed in H-EVs and promoted the M2 polarization of TAMs. Further, miR-181c-5p targeted KAT2B, upregulated HOXA10 and activated the JAK1/STAT3 pathway, thereby promoting the M2 polarization of TAMs. In both mouse models, H-EV-derived miR-181c-5p promoted growth and metastasis of EOC cells. CONCLUSION: The miR-181c-5p-containing EVs from hypoxic EOC cells may upregulate HOXA10 by targeting KAT2B and activate the JAK1/STAT3 pathway to promote the M2 polarization of TAMs, ultimately promoting growth and metastasis of EOC cells in vitro and in vivo.

Background. Of all intestinal microbiome-derived metabolites, trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) has received increasing attention because of its potent role in colorectal cancer development. Accumulating evidence suggests that TMAO generated by the gut microbiota is a new and important player in the etiological process of colorectal cancer. Nevertheless, the carcinogenic mechanism of TMAO in colorectal cancer remains unclear. In this study, TMAO induced colorectal cancer cell proliferation and produced higher vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA) levels in vitro. In vivo, after long-term choline feeding in tumor-bearing mice, circulating TMAO levels, tumor volume, new blood vessel formation, and VEGFA and CD31 amounts were increased significantly. This study revealed that TMAO exerts oncogenic effects by promoting cell proliferation and angiogenesis in colorectal cancer.

Cyromazine is an insect growth regulator insecticide with high selectivity and is widely used in the production and cultivation of fruits and vegetables. In recent years, incidents of excessive cyromazine residues in food have occurred frequently, and it is urgent to establish an accurate, fast, and convenient method for the detection of cyromazine residues to ensure the safety of edible agricultural products. To achieve rapid detection of cyromazine residues, we prepared a molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensor for the detection of cyromazine residues in agricultural products. Samples of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Miller), cowpea (Vigna unguiculata), and water were tested for the recovery rate of cyromazine. The results showed that the concentration of cyromazine showed a good linear relationship with the peak response current of the sensor developed in this study. The lower limit of detection for cyromazine was 0.5 µmol/L, and the sensor also had good reproducibility and interference resistance. This paper can be used as a basis for the study of methods for the detection of cyromazine residues in edible agricultural products.

Zeugodacus cucurbitae (Coquillett), Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel), and Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) are important pests of fruit and vegetable crops and are difficult to control because of their rapid reproduction rate and egg production. To investigate the key genes regulating reproduction in three fruit fly species, we selected genomic information of three fruit fly species, screened specific genes and single-copy homolog genes, and performed KEGG and GO enrichment analysis on specific genes and single-copy homolog genes of the strong positive select (SP); the results showed that Z. cucurbitae (Coquillett), B. dorsalis (Hendel), and C. capitata (Wiedemann) had seven, 11, and one Vitellogenin-related genes, respectively; Z. cucurbitae (Coquillett) had 84 specific genes enriched in immune system-related pathways; B. dorsalis (Hendel) had 1,121 specific genes enriched in signaling pathways related to cell growth and differentiation; C. capitata (Wiedemann) had 42 specific genes enriched in the degradation and metabolism pathways of exogenous organisms; Z. cucurbitae (Coquillett) may have a stronger immune system; B. dorsalis (Hendel) has a faster developmental and reproductive rate; and C. capitata (Wiedemann) has a higher detoxification capacity. Only one SP single-copy homolog gene (gene name: very long-chain specific acyl-CoA dehydrogenase, mitochondrial) is enriched in the fatty acid metabolic pathway in both Z. cucurbitae (Coquillett) and B. dorsalis (Hendel) as well as in Z. cucurbitae (Coquillett) and C. capitata (Wiedemann). This study provides a molecular basis for studying the reproductive mechanisms of three fruit fly species and provides a scientific basis for developing effective control strategies for fruit flies.

A delicate balance of BMP activity is critical for tissue formation and organogenesis. However, the mechanical molecular details in ensuring the proper duration and intensity of BMP signaling have yet to be fully elucidated. Here, we identified a zebrafish mutant with a disrupted gene encoding for the BTB/POZ and zinc finger protein myoneurin (Mynn). mynn -/- mutants exhibited severe loss of pharyngeal cartilage elements, owing to poor proliferation, blocked differentiation, and low viability of cranial neural crest cells. Depletion of mynn in both zebrafish embryos and mammalian cells led to a reduction of the BMP signal activity. Mechanistically, Mynn interacts with Smad proteins in the nucleus, thereby disrupting the association between Smad protein and the phosphatase Ppm1a. Ultimately, this interaction prevents Smad dephosphorylation. More broadly, our findings may provide a new strategy to balance BMP signal activity via competitive binding of Mynn and Ppm1a to Smad proteins during pharyngeal cartilage formation.

An ultra-low friction and high load capacity could be obtained on the surfaces grafted by a polymer brush even at relatively slow friction speeds in aqueous lubrication environments, which has attracted widespread attention to study the lubrication mechanism of polymer brushes; however, it has yet to be fully understood. The macroscopic tribological performance of two different polymer brushes, which were prepared by the method of "grafting to" and "grafting from" and named as PLL-g-PEG and PSPMA, respectively, were investigated. The friction results demonstrated that PLL-g-PEG obtained a lower friction coefficient than polymer brush PSPMA, which was ascribed to its unique "self-healing" behavior. The lubrication film was in situ observed and the film thickness induced by the polymer brush was measured using a laboratory set for film thickness measurement apparatus based on interference technology. It was found that PSPMA exhibited excellent lubrication performance not found in PLL-g-PEG, and two film-forming mechanisms highly dependent on velocity were revealed, which may be important to interpret the lubrication mechanism of polymer brushes in aqueous lubricants.
