BACKGROUND: There are many adhesion barrier materials, cross-linked or non-cross-linked hyaluronic acid (HA), used during surgeries. PURPOSE: This study investigates the efficacy of cross-linked and non-cross-linked HA in preventing Achilles tendon adhesions. We hypothesized that non-cross-linked HA may be more effective than cross-linked HA in preventing Achilles tendon adhesions following injury and repair. METHODS: Twenty male Sprague Dawley rats, totaling 40 legs, underwent Achilles tendon transection and repair. Following the surgery, they were treated simultaneously with cross-linked and non-cross-linked HA formulations. The rats were divided into four groups: a positive control group, a group treated with BMC non-cross-linked HA gel, a group treated with DEFEHERE cross-linked HA gel, and a group treated with ANIKA cross-linked HA gel. Four weeks after surgery, macroscopic evaluation of peritendinous adhesion and histological analysis were conducted to assess the effectiveness of the treatments. RESULTS: Non-cross-linked BMC HA demonstrated superior efficacy in preventing tendon adhesions compared to cross-linked HA and control groups. Histological analysis confirmed reduced adhesion severity in the non-cross-linked HA group (P < 0.05). The findings support the potential of non-cross-linked HA as a treatment to inhibit tendon adhesions. Further research, including clinical trials, is warranted to validate these results in human subjects. CONCLUSIONS: Non-cross-linked BMC HA had significantly lower tendon adhesions parameters and better healing scores in histological analysis than cross-linked HA and control group did. Non-cross-linked HA holds promise as a potential treatment to inhibit the formation of such adhesions.

Senolytics are drugs that specifically target senescent cells. Flavonoids such as quercetin and fisetin possess selective senolytic activities. This study aims to investigate if chalcones exhibit anti-senescence activities. Anti-senescence effect of 11 chalcone derivatives on the replicative senescence human aortic endothelial cells (HAEC) and human fetal lung fibroblasts (IMR90) was evaluated. Compound 2 (4-methoxychalcone) and compound 4 (4-bromo-4'-methoxychalcone) demonstrated increased cytotoxicity in senescent HAEC compared to young HAEC, with significant differences on IC50 values. Their anti-senescence effects on HAEC exceeded fisetin. Higher selectivity of compound 4 toward HAEC over IMR90 could be attributed to 4-methoxy (4-OMe) substitution at ring A (R1). Chalcone derivatives have potentials as senolytics in mitigating replicative senescence, warranting further research and development on chalcones as anti-senescent agent.

Background In a population, when a disease is causing a symptom, the overall symptom incidence can be determined by proportions diseased, baseline symptom incidence, and risk ratios of developing the symptom due to the disease. There are various measures of association, including risk ratios. How risk ratios are linked to other measures of association, such as correlation coefficients and chi-squared statistics, has not been explicitly discussed. This study aims to demonstrate their connection via equations and simulations, assuming one disease causes symptoms. Methods The equations for correlation coefficients and chi-square statistics were rewritten using epidemiological measures: proportions diseased, baseline symptom incidence, and risk ratios. Simulations were conducted to test the accuracy of the equations. The baseline symptom incidence and the proportions diseased were assumed to be 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, or 0.8. The risk ratios were assumed to be 0.5, 1, 2, 5, 10, and 25. Another disease that correlates with this disease was created (correlation = 0, 0.3, or 0.7). For each combination of symptom incidence, proportions diseased, risk ratios, and between-disease correlations, 10,000 subjects were simulated. The correlation coefficients and chi-squared statistics were approximated with epidemiologic measures and their interaction terms. R-squared was used to assess the importance of the epidemiologic measures. Results In the simulations, the overall symptom incidence, correlation coefficients, and chi-squared statistics between the disease and symptoms could be fully explained by the epidemiologic measures in the equations (R-squared = 1). When approximating correlation coefficients and chi-squared statistics with individual measures or their interaction terms, the importance of these measures depended on whether the at-risk incidence reached 1 or not. The numbers in the four cells in the contingency table predicted correlation coefficients, or chi-squared statistics, with different R-squared. Conclusion To our knowledge, this is the first study to translate the three epidemiologic measures (risk ratios, baseline symptom incidence, and proportions diseased) into correlation coefficients and chi-squared statistics. However, chi-squared statistics also depend on sample sizes. This study also provides a platform for developing teaching cases for students to investigate the causal relationship between diseases and symptoms or exposure and outcomes.

ABSTRACT: Chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS) is highly prevalent worldwide and poses a significant threat to men's health, particularly affecting young men. However, the exact causes and mechanisms behind CP/CPPS remain unclear, leading to challenges in its treatment. In this research, a CP/CPPS rat model was established with complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA), and berberine hydrochloride was administered through daily gavage to assess its therapeutic effects. The alterations in the gut microbiome induced by CP/CPPS and berberine hydrochloride were investigated through 16S ribosomal RNA sequencing of cecum content and colonic epithelial cells. To investigate the impact of the gut microbiome on CP/CPPS, a pseudo germ-free rat model was established, and fecal microbiome transplantation (FMT) was performed on these rats. In all, berberine hydrochloride demonstrated effective reduction of inflammation and oxidative stress in the prostate, offering significant therapeutic advantages for CP/CPPS. Through analysis of the gut microbiome using 16S ribosome RNA sequencing, distinct differences were observed between CP/CPPS rats and control rats, and Clostridium butyricum was identified as a key bacteria. Pseudo germ-free rats that underwent FMT from CP/CPPS rats or rats treated with berberine hydrochloride displayed varying levels of inflammatory cytokine production, oxidative stress, and activity of associated signaling pathways. In conclusion, the therapeutic potential of berberine hydrochloride in addressing CP/CPPS is highly significant. The gut microbiome has emerged as a critical factor in the development of CP/CPPS and plays a pivotal role in mediating the therapeutic effects of berberine hydrochloride.

The sensitivity and responsiveness of living cells to environmental changes are enabled by dynamic protein structures, inspiring efforts to construct artificial supramolecular protein assemblies. However, despite their sophisticated structures, designed protein assemblies have yet to be incorporated into macroscale devices for real-life applications. We report a 2D crystalline protein assembly of C98/E57/E66L-rhamnulose-1-phosphate aldolase (CEERhuA) that selectively blocks or passes molecular species when exposed to a chemical trigger. CEERhuA crystals are engineered via cobalt(II) coordination bonds to undergo a coherent conformational change from a closed state (pore dimensions <1 nm) to an ajar state (pore dimensions ~4 nm) when exposed to an HCN(g) trigger. When layered onto a mesoporous silicon (pSi) photonic crystal optical sensor configured to detect HCN(g), the 2D CEERhuA crystal layer effectively blocks interferents that would otherwise result in a false positive signal. The 2D CEERhuA crystal layer opens in selective response to low-ppm levels of HCN(g), allowing analyte penetration into the pSi sensor layer for detection. These findings illustrate that designed protein assemblies can function as dynamic components of solid-state devices in non-aqueous environments.

Streptococcus spp. are important opportunistic pathogen of bacteremia in both immunocompetent and immunosuppressed patients. A streptococcal strain, designated ST2T, was isolated from the blood specimen of a bacteremic patient. Comparative analyses of 16S rRNA, rpoB and groEL gene sequences demonstrated that the novel strain ST2T is a member of the genus Streptococcus. Based on of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities, the type strains of Streptococcus (S.) parasanguinis (99.2%), S. ilei (98.8%), S. oralis subsp. oralis (97.6%), S. australis (97.5%) and S. sanguinis (97.5%) were the closest neighbours to strain ST2T. The housekeeping gene sequences (rpoB and groEL) similarities of strain ST2T to these closely related type strains were 80.4-97.4%, respectively. The complete draft genome of strain ST2T consisted of 2,155,906 bp with a G + C content of 42.0%. Strain ST2T has an average nucleotide identity (ANI) value of 94.1 and 81.3% with S. parasanguinis ATCC 15912T and S. ilei I-G2T, respectively. The highest in silico DNA-DNA hybridization value with respect to the closest species S. parasanguinis was 55.6%, below the species cut-off of 70% hybridization. The primary cellular fatty acids of strain ST2T were C16:0, C18:1 ω9c, C18:0 and C14:0. Based on biochemical criteria and molecular genetic evidence, it is proposed that strain ST2T be assigned to a new species of the genus Streptococcus as Streptococcus taoyuanensis sp. nov. The type strain of Streptococcus taoyuanensis is ST2T (=NBRC 115928T = BCRC 81374T) as the type strain.

BACKGROUND: We investigated whether double-bundle (DB) anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction (ACLR) combined with anterolateral ligament reconstruction (ALLR) improved clinical and radiological outcomes in patients at high risk of ACL failure. The primary outcome was graft failure, and secondary outcomes included knee stability and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Fifty-two patients who underwent DB ACLR combined with ALLR were included in this retrospective cohort study. Preoperative risk factors, including femorotibial angle (FTA), lateral tibial slope (LTS), medial tibial slope (MTS), and meniscal tears, were assessed using X-ray and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The grade of post-operative pivot shift, Lysholm score, and Tegner activity score were used to assess clinical outcomes. The minimum follow up duration was 2 years. RESULTS: The cohort (mean age, 26.1 ± 9.4 years; 51.9% male) had a mean follow-up duration of 28.9 ± 3.4 months. Preoperatively, 57.8% had lateral meniscus (LM) tears, and 61.0% had a grade 2-3 pivot shift. Postoperatively, no graft failures or revision cases occurred during follow-up. Approximately 90.4% of the patients exhibited a negative pivot shift (p < 0.001), with Lysholm and Tegner activity scores of 92.5 ± 6.1 and 5.1 ± 2.0. The medial meniscus (MM) tear group had a significantly smaller FTA than the intact group (p = 0.043). No significant differences in PROMs were found between the LM tear and intact LM groups or between the high and low MTS or LTS groups (p = n.s.). CONCLUSION: DB ACLR combined with ALLR had satisfactory clinical outcomes in patients at high risk of ACL failure, with no graft failures observed during a mean follow-up duration of 2.4 years. The technique effectively reduced the postoperative pivot shift, regardless of preoperative risk factors. STUDY DESIGN: Level IV, retrospective therapeutic case-series. Lipid emulsions are the primary source of calories and fatty acids that are used to provide essential energy and nutrients to patients suffering from severe intestinal failure and critical illness. However, their use has been linked to adverse effects on patient outcomes, notably affecting immune defenses and inflammatory responses. ClinOleic is a lipid emulsion containing a mixture of olive oil and soybean oil (80:20). The effect of ClinOleic on the differentiation of M1 macrophages remains unclear. In this study, we isolated human monocytes and added ClinOleic to differentiation culture media to investigate whether it affects monocyte polarization into M1 macrophages and macrophage functions, such as reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and phagocytosis. ROS production was stimulated by live S. aureus and detected with L-012, a chemiluminescence emission agent. Phagocytic capacity was assayed using pHrodo™ Green S. aureus Bioparticles® Conjugate. We found that M1 cell morphology, surface markers (CD80 and CD86), and M1-associated cytokines (TNF-α and IL-6) did not significantly change upon incubation with ClinOleic during M1 polarization. However, S. aureus-triggered ROS production was significantly lower in M1 macrophages differentiated with ClinOleic than in those not treated with ClinOleic. The inhibitory effect of ClinOleic on macrophage function also appeared in the phagocytosis assay. Taken together, these findings reveal that ClinOleic has a limited impact on the M1 differentiation phenotype but obviously reduces ROS production and phagocytosis.

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic broke out in March 2020, causing tremendous damage to public health and more than 6 million deaths. After authorization for the emergency use of COVID-19 vaccines, various adverse events have been reported, including optic neuritis. COVID-19 vaccination was implemented in Taiwan in March 2021. METHODS: We report patients who developed optic neuritis after COVID-19 vaccination at one university-affiliated tertiary hospital, between March 2021 and December 2022. We also provided a literature review of optic neuritis cases after COVID-19 vaccination. RESULTS: Five patients who developed optic neuritis after COVID-19 vaccination have been identified. Four brands of vaccine used were as follows: Moderna, Pfizer-BioNTech, Medigen, and Oxford AstraZeneca. Optic neuritis developed after the first dose of vaccination in 4 patients, whereas in 1 patient, it developed after the second shot. In the 3 patients with poor initial visual acuity, intravenous methylprednisolone pulse therapy achieved substantial improvement. CONCLUSIONS: Optic neuritis is a rare but potentially vision-threatening adverse effect of COVID-19 vaccination. We suggest early diagnosis and treatment to maximize visual outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: Endothelial cells play a critical role in maintaining vascular function and kinetic homeostasis, but excessive accumulation of palmitic acid (PA) may lead to endoplasmic reticulum stress and trigger endothelial cell dysfunction. Baicalin (BCL), a natural plant extract, has received widespread attention for its biological activities in anti-inflammation and anti-oxidative stress. However, the mechanism of BCL on PA-induced endothelial cell dysfunction is unclear. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate whether BCL could inhibit PA-induced endoplasmic reticulum stress and thus attenuate endothelial cell dysfunction. METHODS: Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were divided into Control, PA, PA + BCL-10 µM, PA + BCL-20 µM, and PA + BCL-50 µM groups. The PA group was treated with PA (200 µM), while the PA + BCL groups were co-treated with different concentrations of BCL (10 µM, 20 µM, 50 µM) for 24 hours. Cell viability was detected by MTT. Cell migration ability was determined by Transwell assay, apoptosis level by flow cytometry, and tube formation ability by tube formation assay. Finally, the levels of apoptosis-related proteins (Bax, Bcl-2, and cleaved caspase-3) and angiogenesis-related proteins (VEGFA and FGF2) were detected by western blot, MMP-9, as well as the protein levels of endoplasmic reticulum stress biomarkers (GRP78, CHOP, PERK, and ATF4). RESULTS: The results at the cellular level showed that cell viability, migration ability and tube formation ability of PA-induced HUVECs were significantly reduced, while apoptosis level was significantly increased. However, administration of different concentrations of BCL significantly enhanced PA-induced cell viability, migration ability and tube formation ability of HUVECs while inhibiting apoptosis. The results of protein levels showed that the protein levels of Bax and cleaved caspase-3 were observably up-regulated in the cells of the PA group, while the protein level of Bcl-2 was significantly down-regulated; compared with the PA group, the protein levels of Bax and cleaved caspase-3 were much lower and the Bcl-2 protein level was much higher in the PA + BCL group. Additionally, the protein levels of VEGFA, FGF2 and MMP-9 were raised and those of GRP78, CHOP, PERK and ATF4 were lowered in the PA + BCL group of cells in a concentration-dependent manner. CONCLUSION: BCL significantly attenuates PA-induced endothelial cell dysfunction by inhibiting endoplasmic reticulum stress.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effectiveness and safety of nab-paclitaxel, cisplatin, and capecitabine (nab-TPC) with gemcitabine and cisplatin as an alternative first line treatment option for recurrent or metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma. DESIGN: Phase 3, open label, multicentre, randomised trial. SETTING: Four hospitals located in China between September 2019 and August 2022. PARTICIPANTS: Adults (≥18 years) with recurrent or metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma. INTERVENTIONS: Patients were randomised in a 1:1 ratio to treatment with either nab-paclitaxel (200 g/m2 on day 1), cisplatin (60 mg/m2 on day 1), and capecitabine (1000 mg/m2 twice on days 1-14) or gemcitabine (1 g/m2 on days 1 and 8) and cisplatin (80 mg/m2 on day 1). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Progression-free survival was evaluated by the independent review committee as the primary endpoint in the intention-to-treat population. RESULTS: The median follow-up was 15.8 months in the prespecified interim analysis (31 October 2022). As assessed by the independent review committee, the median progression-free survival was 11.3 (95% confidence interval 9.7 to 12.9) months in the nab-TPC cohort compared with 7.7 (6.5 to 9.0) months in the gemcitabine and cisplatin cohort. The hazard ratio was 0.43 (95% confidence interval 0.25 to 0.73; P=0.002). The objective response rate in the nab-TPC cohort was 83% (34/41) versus 63% (25/40) in the gemcitabine and cisplatin cohort (P=0.05), and the duration of response was 10.8 months in the nab-TPC cohort compared with 6.9 months in the gemcitabine and cisplatin cohort (P=0.009). Treatment related grade 3 or 4 adverse events, including leukopenia (4/41 (10%) v 13/40 (33%); P=0.02), neutropenia (6/41 (15%) v 16/40 (40%); P=0.01), and anaemia (1/41 (2%) v 8/40 (20%); P=0.01), were higher in the gemcitabine and cisplatin cohort than in the nab-TPC cohort. No deaths related to treatment occurred in either treatment group. Survival and long term toxicity are still being evaluated with longer follow-up. CONCLUSION: The nab-TPC regimen showed a superior antitumoural efficacy and favourable safety profile compared with gemcitabine and cisplatin for recurrent or metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Nab-TPC should be considered the standard first line treatment for recurrent or metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Longer follow-up is needed to confirm the benefits for overall survival. The existence of liquid carbon as an intermediate phase preceding the formation of novel carbon materials has been a point of contention for several decades. Experimental observation of such a liquid state requires nonthermal melting of solid carbon materials at various laser fluences and pulse properties. Reflectivity experiments performed in the mid-1980s reached opposing conclusions regarding the metallic or insulating properties of the purported liquid state. Time-resolved X-ray absorption studies showed shortening of C-C bonds and increasing diffraction densities, thought to evidence a liquid or glassy carbon state, respectively. Nevertheless, none of these experiments provided information on the electronic structure of the proposed liquid state. Herein, we report the results of time-resolved resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) and time-resolved X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) studies on amorphous carbon (a-C) and ultrananocrystalline diamond (UNCD) as a function of delay time between the irradiating pulse and X-ray probe. For both a-C and UNCD, we attribute decreases in RIXS or XES signals to transition blocking, relaxation, and finally, ablation. Increased signal at 20 ps following the irradiation of the UNCD is attributed to the probable formation of nanoscale structures in the ablation plume. Differences in the amount of signal observed between a-C and UNCD are explained by the difference in sample thickness and, specifically, incomplete melting of the UNCD film. Comparisons to spectral simulations based on MD trajectories at extreme conditions indicate that the carbon state in our experiments is crystalline. Normal mode analysis confirmed that symmetrical bending or stretching of the C-C bonds in the diamond lattice results in XES spectra with small intensity differences. Overall, we observed no evidence of melting to a liquid state, as determined by the lack of changes in the spectral properties for up to 100 ps delays following the melting pulses.

BACKGROUND: The impact of anatomical factors, such as the lateral tibial slope (LTS), on outcomes following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction is an area of growing interest. This study was led by the observation that patients with a higher LTS may have different recovery trajectories. HYPOTHESIS/PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between a higher LTS and long term subjective outcomes following single-bundle ACL reconstruction. STUDY DESIGN: This study was designed as a retrospective cohort study. METHODS: The study comprised 138 patients who underwent single-bundle ACL reconstruction. The LTS was measured on preoperative radiographs. Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) were collected, which included the Lysholm Knee Score, UCLA Activity Score, IKDC Score, and Tegner Activity Score, over a mean follow-up duration of 137 months. RESULTS: A significant negative correlation was found between LTS and all measured PROMs (p < 0.001). The established cut-off value of LTS distinguishing between "Good" and "Fair" Lysholm scores was 8.35 degrees. Female patients have statistically significant higher LTS and lower PROMs scores than male. Patients with LTS greater than or equal to 8.35 had significantly lower PROMs, indicative of poorer functional and subjective outcomes. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that a higher LTS is associated with inferior subjective outcomes following single-bundle ACL reconstruction in long term. The LTS cut-off value of 8.35 degrees could potentially be used as a reference in preoperative planning and patient counseling. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Understanding the relationship between LTS and ACL reconstruction outcomes could inform surgical planning and postoperative management. These findings highlight the need to consider anatomical variances, such as LTS, when assessing patient-specific risks and recovery expectations, contributing to the advancement of personalized care in sports medicine.

Background: This study aimed to explore the expression level and transcriptional regulation mechanism of Extra Spindle Pole Bodies Like 1 (ESPL1) in bladder cancer (BC). Methods: A multicentre database of samples (n = 1391) was assayed for ESPL1 mRNA expression in BC and validated at the protein level by immunohistochemical (IHC) staining of in-house samples (n = 202). Single-cell sequencing (scRNA-seq) analysis and enrichment analysis explored ESPL1 distribution and their accompanying molecular mechanisms. ATAC-seq, ChIP-seq and Hi-C data from multiple platforms were used to investigate ESPL1 upstream transcription factors (TFs) and potential epigenetic regulatory mechanisms. Immune-related analysis, drug sensitivity and molecular docking of ESPL1 were also calculated. Furthermore, upstream microRNAs and the binding sites of ESPL1 were predicted. The expression level and early screening efficacy of miR-299-5p in blood (n = 6625) and tissues (n = 537) were examined. Results: ESPL1 was significantly overexpressed at the mRNA level (p < 0.05, SMD = 0.75; 95 % CI = 0.09, 1.40), and IHC staining of in-house samples verified this finding (p < 0.0001). ESPL1 was predominantly distributed in BC epithelial cells. Coexpressed genes of ESPL1 were enriched in cell cycle-related signalling pathways, and ESPL1 might be involved in the communication between epithelial and residual cells in the Hippo, ErbB, PI3K-Akt and Ras signalling pathways. Three TFs (H2AZ, IRF5 and HIF1A) were detected upstream of ESPL1 and presence of promoter-super enhancer and promoter-typical enhancer loops. ESPL1 expression was correlated with various immune cell infiltration levels. ESPL1 expression might promote BC growth and affect the sensitivity and therapeutic efficacy of paclitaxel and gemcitabine in BC patients. As an upstream regulator of ESPL1, miR-299-5p expression was downregulated in both the blood and tissues, possessing great potential for early screening. Conclusions: ESPL1 expression was upregulated in BC and was mainly distributed in epithelial cells. Elevated ESPL1 expression was associated with TFs at the upstream transcription start site (TSS) and distant chromatin loops of regulatory elements. ESPL1 might be an immune-related predictive and diagnostic marker for BC, and the overexpression of ESPL1 played a cancer-promoting role and affected BC patients' sensitivity to drug therapy. miR-299-5p was downregulated in BC blood and tissues and was also expected to be a novel marker for early screening.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The REgistry of Selective Internal radiation therapy in AsiaNs (RESIN) was a multicenter, single-arm, prospective, observational study of 90Y resin microspheres in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) or metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) from Taiwan. RESIN is the first real-life clinical study of this therapy in an Asian cohort. Study objectives were to evaluate the safety and efficacy of 90Y resin microspheres. METHODS: Adults with HCC or mCRC scheduled to receive SIRT with 90Y resin microspheres were included. Primary endpoints were best overall response rate (ORR), adverse events, and changes from baseline in liver function. Secondary efficacy endpoints included overall survival (OS). RESULTS: Of 107 enrolled patients, 83 had HCC, and 24 had mCRC. ORR was 55.41% (HCC) and 33.33% (mCRC). Of 58 HCC patients with 6-month post-SIRT data, 13.79% (n = 8) had resection, transplantation, transarterial chemoembolization, or radiofrequency ablation as the result of down-staging or down-sizing of their lesions. One hundred and ten treatment emergent adverse events (TEAEs) were reported in 51 patients, and five serious adverse events (SAEs) were reported in five patients. The most frequent TEAEs were abdominal pain, nausea and decreased appetite (HCC), and abdominal pain, decreased appetite, fatigue, and vomiting (mCRC). Two deaths due to SAEs (probably related to SIRT) were reported, both in patients with extensive HCC, active hepatitis infection, and other comorbidities. Median OS was 24.07 (HCC) and 12.66 (mCRC) months. CONCLUSIONS: Safety and efficacy outcomes with the routine use of SIRT with 90Y resin microspheres in Taiwan are consistent with published data.

This work discusses the effectiveness of the previously developed comprehensive calculation model to optimize linear MALDI-TOF mass spectrometers. The model couples space- and velocity-focusing to precisely analyze the flight-time distribution of ions and predict optimal experimental parameters for the highest mass resolving power. Experimental validation was conducted using a laboratory-made instrument to analyze CsI3 and angiotensin I ions in low to medium m/z range. The results indicate that the predicted optimal extraction voltage and delay were reasonably accurate and effective. In the low m/z range, the peak width obtained using optimal parameters reached the sub nanosecond range, corresponding to a mass resolving power of 10 000-17 000, or 20 000-34 000 if shot-to-shot random fluctuations were minimized by the dynamic data correction method. The observed optimal mass resolving power in the current experiment is 4.8-7.8 times that of commercial instruments. Practical limitations resulting in the gap between the observed and theoretical ultimate mass resolving power are discussed.

Image-based criteria have been adopted to diagnose femoroacetabular impingement (FAI). However, the overlapping property of the two-dimensional X-ray outlines and static and supine posture of taking computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging images potentially affect the accuracy of the criteria. This study developed a CT image-based dynamic criterion to effectively simulate FAI, thereby providing a basis for physicians to perform pre-operative planning for arthroscopic surgery. Post-operative CT images of 20 patients with satisfactory surgical results were collected, and 10 sets of models were used to define the flexion rotation centre (FRC) of the three-dimensional FAI model. First, let these 10 groups of models simulate the FAI detection action and find the best centre offset, and then FRC is the result of averaging these 10 groups of best displacements. The model was validated in 10 additional patients. Finally, through the adjustment basis of FRC, the remaining 10 sets of models can find out the potential position of FAI during the dynamic simulation process. Rotational collisions detected using FRC indicate that the patient's post-operative flexion angle may reach 120° or greater, which is close to the actual result. The recommended surgical range of the diagnostic system (average length of 6.4 mm, width of 4.1 mm and depth of 3.2 mm) is smaller than the actual surgical results, which prevents the doctor from performing excessive resection operations, which may preserve more bones. The FRC diagnostic system detects the distribution of FAI in a simple manner. It can be used as a pre-operative diagnosis reference for clinicians, hoping to improve the effect and accuracy of debridement surgery.

Superlattices constructed with the wide-band-gap semiconductor ZnO and magnetic oxide FeO, both in the wurtzite structure, have been investigated using spin-polarized first-principles calculations. The structural, electronic and magnetic properties of the (ZnO)n/(w-FeO)n superlattices were studied in great detail. Two different interfaces in the (ZnO)n/(w-FeO)n superlattices were identified and they showed very different magnetic and electronic properties. Local symmetry-driven interfacial magnetization and electronic states can arise from different Fe/Zn distributions at different interfaces or spin ordering of Fe in the superlattice. The local symmetry-driven interfacial magnetization and electronic states, originating either from different Fe/Zn distribution across interfaces I and II, or by spin ordering of Fe in the superlattice, can be identified. It was also found that, in the case of the ferromagnetic phase, the electrons are more delocalized for the majority spin but strongly localized for the minority spin, which resulted in interesting spin-dependent transport properties. Our results will pave the way for designing novel spin-dependent electronic devices through the construction of superlattices from semiconductors and multiferroics.
